Blaze levels mushroom barn No one was hurt in a fouralarm blaze on 256th Street. by Matthew Claxton mclaxton@langleyadvance.com

A sizeable mushroom barn was destroyed by fire early Thursday morning in rural Langley Township. At about 3:45 a.m. firefighters were alerted that the barn, located close to 256th Street and 64th Avenue, was ablaze. The first firefighters on the scene immediately called for backup to keep the fire from spreading to two houses on the property, said District Chief Russ Jenkins. In all, four firehalls and 25 firefighters spent the early morning hours extinguishing the fire. “It was a defensive attack right from the start,” Jenkins said. There was no chance to save the main barn, which was reduced to a smoking pile of rubble by dawn. Firefighters spent hours putting out spot fires, and were hoping to begin an investigation into the cause by mid-day Thursday. There were several people living in the homes on the land, but everyone was accounted for. No people or animals were thought to be in the barn. As of press time, it was too early to suggest a possible cause for the fire, Jenkins said.

Langley Township and Quadra Homes have come up with a land deal that saves taxpayers money and provides amenities sooner than normal around the 1,600 unit strata complex being built in Willoughby. Quadra has started building on land between 208th and about 206th Streets from about 82nd Avenue to 84th Avenue. Quadra started acquiring land in 2007 and started working with the Township on planning. They’ve submitted the paperwork to the province that would see Quadra provide 10 acres (five for parks and five for a school) to the Township for about one quarter of market value. “We fronted the money for the purchase of the school and park site, and we will be reimbursed over time by the Township as we build our project,” explained Quadra vice president Shawn Bouchard. He said the deal also means the community will get a rebuilt 208th Street beside the project and sidewalks sooner rather than
