Cops for Cancer riders begin their journey in Delta PHOTOS BY

Cyclists in the annual Cops Cancer Tour de Valley kicked off their nineday, 800-kilometre ride Thursday in Delta. They made several stops in South Delta, including one at Ladner’s Port Guichon Elementary where this year’s junior rider, 12year-old Lucas Sampson (left), signed his trading card for classmates. The riders will finish their journey Oct. 1 in White Rock.

The Delta Chamber of Commerce has announced the finalists for its annual Hats Off to Excellence Awards. Bev Day from the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society, farmer Peter Guichon and Al and Phyllis Wawryk are up for Citizen of the Year. Business of the Year candidates include the Delta Optimist, Great Pacific Bioproducts and M and J Woodcrafts. The three finalists for the Special Events and Tourism Award are David Bradbeer and Margaret Paterson for Day at the Farm, Megan Anderson for Art in the Village and Chrissie Bowker and Kathie Madden for Project Bloom.
