Voters head to the polls this Saturday to elect a new municipal councillor. Eight candidates — Sylvia Bishop, Maria DeVries, Amy Ghuman Sara, Peter Harms, Kathleen Higgins, Sandeep Pandher, Ian Paton and Ray Robinson — are contesting the by-election to fill the Delta council seat left vacant by the sudden death of George Hawksworth this

spring. In advanced polls held last week, 2,270 people came out to cast ballots — 629 in Ladner, 753 in Tsawwassen and 888 in North Delta. The last Delta general election in 2008 saw a 31 per cent voter turnout, but by-elections usually have lower turnouts. You have to go back to 1987 for the last civic by-election when just under 20 per cent of the eligible voters cast ballots and Doug

Husband beat Bruce McDonald. Whoever is victorious, it will be their first time serving on council, although Bishop,

Higgins, DeVries, Ghuman Sara and Robinson have previously run for a civic seat. All the candidates are calling themselves independents, although Paton is supported by Mayor Lois Jackson’s Delta

Independent Voters’ Association. In order to vote, residents must be 18 years of age or older on voting day, be a Canadian citizen, have been a resident of B.C. for at least six months and have been a resident of Delta for at least 30 days. Voting places are open Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information about the voting process or locations, call the municipal clerk’s office at 604-946-3220 or visit www.corp. delta.bc.ca/deltavotes.
