It’s a good first step but the provincial government needs to step up, says a member of the Ladner Sediment Group following Delta council’s decision to seek funding for much needed dredging.

Mike Owen was on hand with several members of the lobby group, which includes water lot owners, local businesses and channel users, at council Monday as the civic politicians agreed to apply for grant funding through the B.C. Flood Protection Program. The lack of funding for river

dredging in the secondary channels has long been a concern in Delta, where the Ladner Sediment Group says the waters have become increasingly difficult to navigate. needed. “It’s an important first step to try to get the province to recognize our issue. It’s been a longtime issue for both Delta staff and politicians to get the province to quit saying it’s a navigation issue with the federal government,” said Owen. “We’re sitting on provincial

Crown land here in Delta and without the landlord at the table it’s very hard to deal with it. The province has put out this request for proposals for municipalities to deal with flood proofing and I’m very glad Delta sees we have to at least try and do something like See DREDGING page 3
