ormer Vancouver mayor Phillip Owen said it best when he was interviewed by the media on the Pickton case: “What a big mess.” Last week, gruesome details emerged after materials under a publication ban were released to the media. There’s no point in repeating them all here, but what does bear repeating is the one that could have made all the difference. Back in 1997, one of Pickton’s chosen victims escaped his PoCo farm after defending herself with a knife. Both Pickton and she ended up in the same hospital. Their bloody clothes were taken as evidence and then someone decided that the victim would not have been a credible witness and the case did not proceed to court. That evidence stayed in a locker for seven years before someone, apparently, went looking for it. Last week before all of this information was released to the public, a spokesperson for the Vancouver Police Department apologized on behalf of the force for not catching Pickton sooner. We can now appreciate that he was probably aware of all the information that was about to surface — and that it would not put the police or prosecutors in a good light. But it is also clear that the VPD can only share some of the blame for letting a monster continue to kill innocent women. Where are the apologies from prosecutors or other police jurisdictions? And where is the accounting for what turned out to be a pivotal error in the case? There are understandable cries for a public inquiry into the whole mess. But would it reveal anything new? Perhaps an inquiry would reveal individuals in the policing and judicial system, who, through neglect or indifference, botched up the case. But we believe the problem lies deeper than missed evidence — it resides in a society that still views some people as more valuable than others.

Pharmacy plan will hurt quality control N ext time you walk into a drugstore, you may want to ensure your prescription has been properly filled and checked by a real apothecary — a pharmacist, that is. And if you or your loved ones are on a complicated medication regime and technicians are doing the final check on your medicine, then perhaps you ought to be signing a consent form. This is because the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia has decided to pursue the licensing of technicians by Dec. 31, triggering a debate among community pharmacists who fret over liability, the profession’s integrity and public safety. Cristina For years now, the pharmacy profession has been easing the technical aspect of the job, first via specialized technology, then via technical support, but never before by leaving order entry, preparation and final check of prescriptions to unsupervised, largely under-qualified personnel. While the college claims that pharmacists will still be ensuring the appropriateness of the drugs prescribed to begin with, quality control will certainly give way to monetary gain. If one pharmacist must oversee the appropriateness of hundreds of scrips churned out daily by an army of techs, major mishaps will undoubtedly occur. This idea may well work in a hospital setting, where errors are quickly caught and contained. Not so out in the community where once the wrong drug goes out that door it’s gone — and so, perhaps, is the patient.

But let’s face it: most people have no clue just how much care goes into filling prescriptions. From searching for drug incompatibilities to making phone calls to refusals to fill when directions are inadequate or the wrong drugs are prescribed for a given condition — you name it, good pharmacists catch it. There are myriad prescribing errors made and caught daily. This is far from mindless work. Yet from their ivory towers academics believe the technical and cognitive aspects of this work can be separated — imagine a chef who cannot cook, a plumber who cannot use a pump — while drug store chain owners greedily wait to cash in on Alarcon the techs’ much-lower wages. The regulation of pharmacy technicians will ultimately result in the creation of a new health-care professional and new registrant of the College of Pharmacists of BC. Regulated pharmacy technicians will essentially take over the technical functions of the pharmacists’ job, and pharmacists will be sitting back sipping margaritas by their pools, waiting for a call from their lawyers over the next casualty. No really, the idea is to free up the pharmacist for consultation on disease management and drug care, but for a hefty, never-before-seen fee. Thus the most readily accessible health-care professional will be available no more, and your drug reviews and queries will be charged speedily to your Master Card or Visa. Largely taken over by bureaucrats, academics and drug store chain owners, the College of Pharmacists of BC is giving in to their vested conflicts of interest.

Meanwhile, the college board is conveniently silencing those who oppose their agenda by claiming that all must speak with “one voice.” Most recently, input was seemingly sought from the public on proposed bylaw changes that would create this new technical profession. Yet board member Bev Harris (a Coquitlam pharmacist) was reprimanded for speaking in a public forum to point out the problematic draft changes. And so it appears the consultation process was merely a sham. Fruitful discussion was never really the aim. Over 500 community pharmacists have petitioned the college to hold off on bylaw changes that would give technicians the authority to take over their dispensing functions after a mere eight months of training. Technician certification, rather than licensing, is what pharmacists would like to see. And it’s not that pharmacists want to go back to all that counting and licking and sticking. Trained technicians are already helping greatly with that and much more. While providing appropriate and timely services, pharmacists want to be sure that no errors are made along any step of the way, and that what your label says you’re getting is really what’s in the bottle. A wrong drug or dosage may not be life threatening when you are young and healthy, but it may be lethal if dispensed to your 80-year-old mother or to your two-year-old son. Mr Smalley further comments that the Tri-Cities councils should be consolidating services like the private sector has had to do for the past several years if they want to compare themselves to the responsibilities of private sector managers and be remunerated accordingly. When Mr. Moore was questioned recently on this subject, he mentioned the less-than-satisfactory mergers that took place in Ottawa and some communities in Quebec. Does that mean that just because To The they weren’t overly successful elsewhere, that no effort should be made to try and reduce the out-of-line operating costs being incurred by each of the three TriCities? Do we just throw up our hands and say it can’t work? That’s likely the reason why we currently have these people in politics and not in the private sector. He also mentioned that a merger of the Tri-Cities communities would require that they accept the highest pay levels for each of the consolidated positions. Firstly, I would challenge him that there likely isn’t much difference in the hourly rates at any union position between the three cities — these politicians and their bureaucrats have already been whipsawed by their union counterparts. Furthermore, I would suggest

To reiterate some of his comments, most private sector managers, after only two years on the job (comparing this to Greg Moore’s two-year tenure as PoCo’s mayor) would not be jumping to the top of the pay scale, although I recognize that there doesn’t appear to be a pay scale when it comes to our politicians deciding what they should be getting paid. Mr. Moore, rather than trying to rationalize his increase and future remuneration based on equivalent pay for similar size communities by population, would have been better to have told his constituents what he has done to improve services and/or reduce the city’s operating costs to improve the quality of life for his residents in line with his significant pay increase. I would suspect he would be short on achievements normally required of private sector executives. I’m sure this “game” of comparing remuneration will now play out with other city councils — maybe Port Moody will feel they are falling behind, and then it will be Coquitlam’s turn and then back

It only has six competition lanes whereas most clubs have eight. The indoor pool can’t even host competitions because there aren’t any lanes. A wave pool would also be fun. We need a hospital, too. Let’s get a movie theatre, and while you are at it, how about an arts and theatre club and put a manmade lake around it with a new track and field surface? Oh, and we’ll have a lawn bowling surface, please. It would also be nice to have a curling rink as well. Then, while you are at it, how about throwing in a cycling track just for fun? City wants public input on plan for Mundy Park playground Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com The City of Coquitlam is seeking feedback on the possibility of building a forest adventure playground in the tree canopy at Mundy Park. The system would include walkways, ladders, swings and zip lines to create a tree-to-tree course for all ages and skill levels. According to the city’s website, the structures would not harm the trees or obstruct natural areas below them. City staff considered locations in Eagle Ridge, Blue Mountain, Glen and Town Centre parks. However, they chose Mundy Park because of its access to parking, walkways and utilities.

As well, the existing tree canopy is considered suitable for this type of activity. The recommended location is a five-acre (two-hectare) forested area northeast of Spani Pool and east of Mundy 4 sports field. A public consultation process is underway, and feedback will be accepted until Wednesday, Aug. 25. An online poll and discussion forum is posted at www.coquitlam.ca/cqforum. Residents can also provide feedback through a questionnaire on the city’s website at www. coquitlam.ca. Questionnaires can be faxed to 604-927-3535, e-mailed to adventureplayground@coquitlam.ca or mailed to City Hall. Results from the public consultation process will be included in the next staff report to council, which will also identify compliance requirements and requests for proposal.

Port Moody Summerfest this Sunday Sure it’s the same season, but this year’s festival has a slightly different name and feel. Sunday marks Summer Fest 2010 in Port Moody’s Newport Village, a sort of spinoff of the city’s yearly Italian Festival, which had also gone by the moniker Festa Italia. “Festa Italia is not gone — we’re taking a break from that format, and this year we’re focusing on summerrelated activities,” said festival spokesperson Maria Woods. “We just hope everyone comes out and has a great time.” Slated to run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the day will feature a myriad of family-related activities: a 30-foot obstacle course for kids, arts and crafts, mini-golf, roaming balloon artists, face painters and other kids games. Entry ballots will also be made available for three different gift baskets from local merchants. Woods said the day’s events will kick off at 11 a.m. with a cake cutting by Port Moody Mayor Joe Trasolini. From there, 15 students will give a martial arts demonstration courtesy of Coquitlam’s Personal Best Martial Arts Academy. “It will entail demonstrations of Hapkido, kickboxing and Brazilian jiu jitsu, which is one of the fastest growing martial arts in North America,” said academy owner Kevin Doerksen. At 1 p.m., Vancouver-based jazz and R&B performer Jayne Anastacio will take to the stage, followed by an acoustic set from Rocky Jr. and his band Cause for Drama. Tribute act Nearly Neil will close out the day with a 45minute set dedicated to all things Neil Diamond at 3 p.m. Newport Drive will be open for business and without parking restrictions Sunday, but the pavilion will be closed.

Film society set for this weekend’s inside and outside double bill

Langley winery still surprises

was surprised at some comments made recently at a Fraser Valley wine tour that I was conducting. While we were at Domaine de Chaberton Estate Winery in Langley, several tour participants were amazed that they did not know that this amazing winery is located so close to the Vancouver area. We were at the fifth-largest estate winery in B.C. among 50 acres (20 hectares) of vineyards that were first planted in 1983. Founders Claude and Inge Violet have passed on the reins to new owners, but many of their principals, such as the winemaker and the vineyard manager, have been with Domaine since the beginning. The winery produces outstanding whites from its Langley vineyards that qualify for 100-mile status wines. Add to that a large and interesting tasting room, and one of the best winery restaurants in B.C., and you have a true Okanagan experience an hour’s drive from Vancouver. The Bistro Wine Sense Restaurant overlooks the vineyards, and the cuisine is as genuine French John Gerum bistro as I have ever experienced. At many winery tasting rooms around B.C., I have noticed that the tasting staff do not have the knowledge to discuss the wines in depth. This is not the case at Domaine, where the staff are extremely well versed with not only wines from B.C. but those from around the world. The only new wines released since the new owner took over are the Canoe Cove line of wines, which continue to sell well. These wines reflect a new-world style that sets them back from the traditional Germanic wines that Domaine produces. The Bacchus vine produces outstanding wine from the local vineyards. Domaine has produced two versions, one an off-dry style and the other a dry style, both equally impressive. The Bacchus shows green apple, pear and peach flavours that marry well with the slightly floral nose.

The big hybrid gladioli corms aren’t reliably hardy in this climate. They’re usually planted April to mid-June to flower later in the summer. The only way to even hope to get them through at this time is to plant them at least five inches (13 cm) deep in a very welldrained, sheltered place where they can get full sun. Then, if the winter is unusually warm, a few may survive. Even so, they’re not likely to be in good shape and even less likely to flower. If they’re fresh corms recently lifted from your friend’s garden after flowering, you might dry them off for a few days, then store them over the winter in a paper bag or in a cardboard box packed in shredded paper. Check them every month for rot or mildew. They should be planted in April.

es, Avalon is still around and the top-cat Toyota has been given a stylish makeover inside and out, plus a tech update for the 2011 model year. It’s also a recently announced Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) “Top Safety Pick” award winner. Why buy a Toyota when you could get a Lexus for almost the same money, or not too much more? It’s a very good question and no doubt it’s the reason there were only 280 Avalon buyers in Canada last year. Avalon appeals to buyers who care less about brand names and more about good value. There are also buyers out there who want those finer luxury traits and toys that it provides, but prefer not to flaunt wealth or success by owning a high-end luxury class car. Like every Toyota, this flagship Toyota is extremely well put together, super reliable and historically it has excellent value retention. Avalon also gives Toyota a foothold in the full-sized near-luxury segment where it competes with cars like the new Buick LaCrosse, Ford Taurus, Hyundai Genesis and Chrysler 300. The 2011 body styling changes include a new grille, bumper fascias, front and rear lighting, chrome rocker panels and folding side mirrors. A radical transformation it is not, as you’d have to be an Avalon aficionado to spot them from a distance. On the inside, however, there are some significant changes. There’s a redesigned dash and centre console, active front seat head restraints, standard USB input, XM satellite radio, Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio input capability. It now has an auto up/down feature on all windows and it comes with an upgraded navigation system. Avalon comes with a 3.5-litre V6 engine that can produce 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque, and it’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift mode. While power output falls a tad short of the entry-level Lexus ES 350, which gets 272 hp and 254 lb-ft of torque out of its 3.5-litre V6, the Avalon provides slightly better fuel economy. There is only one Avalon trim (called XLS) and only one factory option, a special pearl paint finish that costs an additional $220. Extra-nice standard features also include eight-way power heated leather seats, reclining rear seats, a navigation system with backup camera, power sunroof, automatic headlights and fog lights. Toyota only sells the Avalon in North America. It was designed and engineered in North America and it’s built in Kentucky, at a facility where the Camry, Camry Hybrid and Venza are also assembled.

Adanacs arrive at Minto Cup as B.C. champs

With a banner tucked under their arms, the Coquitlam junior A Adanacs now can turn their gaze to their main goal. The Minto Cup is all that remains on their to-do list. In the coming week, the Adanacs will map out the strategies and opposition for everything to end successfully in the 2010 National Junior A championship, which starts Aug. 21 at Coquitlam’s Poirier Sports Centre. “It’s going to come down to discipline, goaltending and defence,” said Adanacs head coach Curt Malawsky. “You work all season long to reach this pinnacle, the Minto Cup, and now we’ve got to play our best against the best.” Coquitlam collected the B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League playoff title on Wednesday, downing the New Westminster Salmonbellies 13-7. Finishing the series 4-1 and avoiding any major injuries are counted as positives, too. Coquitlam never trailed, leading 6-1 after 20 minutes and 9-5 after 40. Matt Dinsdale and Riley Loewen each tallied three goals, while Robert Church, Simon Giourmetakis and Mark Matthews netted two apiece. With Okotoks and Orangeville having already clinched their provincial berths last weekend, getting past the final and into a break was an important motivator. Malawsky said that the club wasn’t interested in settling for just the ‘host’ tag in the tournament. “We have a bunch of competitors on this team that wanted to win the provincial title,” he noted. “We didn’t want to back-door it, we wanted to go in (to the Minto Cup) with some momentum.” The tournament begins Aug. 21 with Orangeville playing New West at 5 p.m., and Coquitlam taking on Okotoks at 8 p.m. The final is slated for Aug. 22, 8 p.m. All games are at the Poirier Sports Centre.

sports@thenownews.com If the blockbuster movie Inception was set in the sports world, the dreams would have revolved more about winning and big plays than exploding boxes of fruit and slinky-based architecture. And unlike the characters in Leo DiCaprio’s latest film, the women on B.C.’s under-19 rugby team are living, breathing and dreaming about a successful result. A crew of 25 players from across B.C. are taking to the turf in Calgary this weekend to ruck and roll at the u-19 women’s national rugby festival. Anchoring that team are nine players and a coaching staff from Coquitlam, PoCo and Port Moody, with a firm focus on the task at hand. B.C. is a force at the national women’s level, but has fallen short of first place more times than not. Their attitude, however, remains second to none.

“Making the u-19 B.C. team was very important to me,” said Coquitlam’s Shannon Craig, 17. “Being on the younger side of the group, I was determined to push myself and prove that I could keep up with the older girls… I work hard not only to improve myself, but to improve my team and work towards the gold medal.” That’s the kind of spirit that Port Moody’s Steph Murphy was looking for when she set out to select a cohesive, talented squad to threaten perennial power Ontario for the national crown. Players from around the province put their best feet forward at an ID camp in June, followed by a regional tournament. They whittled down the 75 athletes to a manageable 30 for the final tryout camp, and then came out with the top 25. That process was a major step. Having coached at the high school and club levels, Murphy said developing a cohesive team in the span of six weeks is one of the biggest hurdles. “The main challenge is building

chemistry,” Murphy said. “These athletes are the best at what they do here in B.C. Our challenge as coaches is to get them working together, making decisions and executing skills to the best of their abilities as 15 players on the field.” Murphy and assistant coach April Jones are also coaches with the Coquitlam-based United Rugby Club, where many of the players call home. Ivory Johnson, Jozie Kola, Kylee Larssen, Cassy Powell, Paniz Pahlavanlu, Tina Sabarre, Tiffany Wideen and Craig are all United players, while Jen Cousineau is at the University of Alberta. Those nine players bring a lot of familiarity to the lineup, with a handful also providing B.C. team experience. “(Women’s) Rugby in B.C. has come a long way in the last couple of years, and for all us from the Tri-Cities, we’ve been playing against each other for years now and now we’re on the same team,” Wideen said. Having battled against each other as players for Port Moody, Gleneagle and

Terry Fox secondaries, the women have been in close contact ever since strapping on the rugby pads. “In terms of getting along as people, we get along great,” said Sabarre. “There’s got to be a lot of team chemistry, playing on the field won’t be successful if you don’t play together.” Some of the players — Craig, Johnson, Pahlavanlu and Wideen — have u-17 experience, while Cousineau was part of last year’s second-place u-19 club, which suffered a heartbreaking 12-10 loss to Ontario in the final. With six weeks of serious training behind them, the players are eager to get on the pitch. Although they face some tough opponents, Pahlavanlu believes B.C. has all the pieces to get over the top. “I think it’s going to come down to intensity,” she noted. “I wouldn’t say we’re the biggest team, we’re a pretty fast team and very skilled, but when it comes down to the games if we’re not intense enough… if we can get that intensity, we’ll win, no doubt about it.”

Kim ready for Ames Cup trip

Coquitlam’s Soobin Kim has one more incredible hotspot to enjoy before heading back to high school. The Gleneagle secondary student was named to Team Canada for next week’s Stephen Ames Cup at St. Andrews Golf Club in Moka, Trinidad. “I’m kind of excited... I wasn’t really expecting them to invite me, but when I heard that I was on the team I was pretty thrilled,” Kim 17, said. She joins Surrey’s Jamie Oleksiew in the girls 18-and-under division, and is one of 10 Canadians to be named. Their positions were decided through results during the NIKE Golf Junior Series, part of the

Canadian Junior Golf Association tour. It’s been a whirlwind summer for Kim, having competed last month at the Junior Worlds where she recorded a round of seven-under par. Earlier this month, she placed 11th at the Canadian Jr. championships. She also recently committed to the University of Washington for 2011 on a full-ride scholarship. “This summer has been pretty decent and I just want to go and play well with my teammates and have a good time.” The tournament, which is an annual challenge series between teams of both countries, begins Aug. 18.

Senior Adanacs nudged by Shamrocks

The Coquitlam Adanacs’ future — at least on NOW deadline — sounds a lot like a couple of Beatles songs: Tomorrow Never Knows and Yesterday. That’s because there is no tomorrow if the Coquitlam Adanacs didn’t beat the Victoria Shamrocks yesterday. The two teams met in Victoria (past NOW deadline),

with the Island crew leading 3-1 in the best-of-seven Western Lacrosse Association series. On Tuesday, Coquitlam put up a valiant fight but came up short 13-10 before a hopeful home crowd. A quick 3-0 lead became a tight battle after the Shamrocks pulled ahead in the first period. Early in the second, a series of markers gave the Adanacs an 8-

The Tri-City Bandits are gearing up for a successful Presidents Cup run. The West Coast Senior B Lacrosse team locked up the league playoff title on Sunday by edging Nanaimo 7-6 for a 3-1 series victory. Motorists are advised that temporary traffic pattern changes will be implemented on Lougheed Highway, near United Boulevard. REAMER, Peter June 3, 1918 - August 6, 2010

With great sadness we announce Dad passed away peacefully in his sleep at George Derby Centre. Peter was born in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan. He joined the Duke of Connaught’s Own Regiment July 22, 1941, serving in Britain and NW Europe, taking part in the liberation of Holland. He was discharged November 15, 1945 moving to Vancouver. Finding work and his life mate Madge Greenfield (married 51 years). Mom passed away August 6, 1998. As a plumber he lived & worked in many parts of BC. Pete & Madge were always very active & well liked wherever they lived; through the church, The Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Legion, & driving for the Seniors Outreach in Pt Coq. Dad loved to travel (continuing well into his late 80’s. Dad had a great sense of humour; he always had a story to tell and was a great resource for information. He loved his family and was always there for us. The family was a very important integral part of his life. He had a long battle with Asbestosis. He is survived by his children Lois Reimer, Doris Westrand (Gordon), Alan Reamer (Carolynn), Robert Reamer; his grandchildren Erin ReimerMayzes (Shawn), Ryan Westrand, Brandon Westrand, Alicia Westrand, Angela Zablow (BJ), Christopher Reamer (Jane) and his great grandchildren Zander Zablow & McKayla Reimer. He is survived by siblings Anne Johnson & Jake Reimer. Peter leaves behind close special friends Ken & Agnes Hoggarth and Christina Buckinx. Ken & Agnes have been close to us all our lives. Christina was a loving companion of 7 yrs. Dad lived a long and happy life; he will be missed and thought of in many ways, Funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 14th, 2010 at 10:00am at the Burquitlam Funeral Home, 625 North Road, Coquitlam, BC, with internment at the Port Coquitlam Cemetery at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Lung Association would be appreciated.
