he Chilliwack Fire Department had a quiet Halloween. The Chilliwack RCMP? Not so much. Senseless vandals kept police busy over the weekend, causing mischief and property damage for no apparent reason. RCMP spokesperson Cpl. LeaAnne Dunlop said police responded to several calls of car and business windows being smashed. “They didn’t take anything. They were just out there to break windows,” said Dunlop. “It’s totally senseless. Obviously we never like to see it when it’s related to a theft, but this seems to have been for kicks and that’s really unfortunate.” For some reason, such perpeEB IRST trators often like First reported on t o b r a g a b o u t chilliwacktimes.com their crimes and the RCMP is hoping to hear from anyone who knows who may be responsible for the weekend property damage. dam Phillips and Justin Lennard pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges Monday in connection with the 2008 stabbing death of Cody Gottschalk at Cultus Lake. In addition to the manslaughter charges, both men pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and Phillips pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm. The men had faced second degree murder charges. Phillips admitted that he stabbed Gottschalk, a park warden and another victim during an altercation started by Lennard at Sunnyside campground on May 17, 2008. Gottschalk, 19, died from his injuries. A doctor said his friend, Michael Paget, was “lucky to survive.” The Crown sought a total sentence of eight years in jail for Phillips, who was 18 when the stabbing took place, and seven total years for Lennard, who was 19 at the time of the killing. Justice Terence Schultes was still hearing victim impact statements at press time and it was unclear whether the men would be sentenced Monday or Tuesday. After the pleas, Crown counsel Lothar Kiner read a statement of agreed facts into the record. Kiner told the justice that the fight was started after Gottschalk told a park ranger that he hoped to become an RCMP officer. As darkness descended on the hot long See STABBING, Page 15
