etro Vancouver will go ahead with plans to investigate burning the region’s garbage—but not necessarily in Metro Vancouver. Members of Metro’s sewage and drainage district voted 63-49 in favour Friday of investigating

dumped at the Cache Creek landfill. The decision followed hours of debate, including an earlier rejection of the same motion. The directors also threw out a recom-

reduce greenhouse gas emissions and allow the region to sell heat and energy from the facility. Chopper pilot averts disaster

he Chilliwack-based owner of a fire-fighting helicopter that crash landed near Lillooet Thursday is crediting the pilot with averting disaster. “He did an absolutely marvelous job to put the machine down where he did,” said Ernst Maas, who owns Chilliwack’s Transwest Helicopters. Both the 61-year-old pilot and the 27-year-old co-pilot escaped the crash without serious injuries. Speaking to the Times on Friday, Maas said, “I just talked to the co-pilot today, and he wants to fly today.” The pilot, meanwhile, was airlifted to hospital with relatively minor injuries. He was released soon after and, on Friday, was recovering at home. “He got banged up a little bit,” said Maas. “He’s got a mild concussion, so he’s going to have to rest a bit.
