City MLA upset by resignation Jennifer Moreau staff reporter

Burnaby MLA Kathy Corrigan is saddened by news that NDP leader Carole James is stepping down. “I think it’s tragic. I think she was a wonderful leader, a wonderful colleague for whom I have a great deal of respect,” Corrigan said. “But Carole, as always, thought first of her party. And for that reason she stepped down.” The news came Monday, following an acrimonious week with the NDP after longtime MLA Jenny Kwan publicly aired criticism of James as leader. “Under Carole James’ leadership, there has been a steady erosion of our democratic principles. Debate has Kathy Corrigan been stifled, decisionNDP MLA making centralized, and individual MLAs marginalized,” Kwan wrote. “As well, for too long there has been a clear lack of direction under the leadership of Carole James. Whenever a challenging policy decision arises, often the default position is to avoid taking a stand.” Kwan wasn’t the only one with issues - in all, 13 New Democrat MLAs were questioning James’s leadership. James responded by calling for a caucus meeting this past weekend to hold MLAs responsible, but that meeting never happened. Instead, there were private discussion resulting in James announcing Monday that she would step down as leader. “She decided with the lack of support
