Chevron says most oil was collected Latest figures reveal 10,000 litres has leached into the ground Jennifer Moreau staff reporter

More than 10,000 litres of oily material has leached into the ground in and around Chevron’s north Burnaby refinery since spring, according to the company’s estimates – that’s roughly the equivalent of 68 barrels. The vast majority of that has been recovered, according to company spokesperson Sean Comey. Chevron first discovered a mix of gas, diesel and crude migrating offsite on April 21 during a routine inspection. The oil is showing up in a ditch beside the railroad tracks and on the beach below. The company has not been able to pinpoint a source, but it appears the seep is the result of years of contaminants building up on the property, now being carried offsite through the groundwater. In all, about 10,816 litres have seeped into the ground, but most of that – 10,000 litres – was recovered through a series of extraction wells on the refinery property. The wells are set up to catch the material before it migrates offsite. There are still 816 litres which have migrated offsite, but 800 litres of that have been recovered from the ditch, and Oil Page 8

Services reduced for new moms Jennifer Moreau

A Burnaby-based group that helps moms struggling with postpartum depression has clawed back services following cuts to the organization’s core funding. “We are concerned for our existence at this point,” said Manasi Vadhera from the Pacific Post Partum Support Society. “We have the resources, we have the motivation, we have an increasing demand for services, but unfortunately we’re not able to have the funding.” The society has headquarters in Burnaby, but helps women all over the Lower

Mainland. The organization offers support groups for new moms in Burnaby, Vancouver, Richmond, North Vancouver and Port Coquitlam and counselling over the phone throughout the year, as well as help for husbands or partners of women with postpartum depression. Vadhera said the society lost its 20-year long-term core funding in 2010, which represents about 25 per cent of overall funding. As a result, the society had to cut the Burnaby support group last November. They also have to cut back on telephone support hours substantially and limit their public education talks with new moms,

thanks to the cuts. In 2010, the society took about 100 calls from women in Burnaby alone. “At this point, the services should be expanding. Unfortunately, instead of us being able to reach out to new moms or have our staff do more community support work, we are struggling to survive,” Vadhera said. “We don’t know of any other organization that provides this constant support and holds these women’s hands in such a personal way. And we also have 40 years of experience at it.” The support groups, which help a maximum of eight women at any given time, are Support Page 8
