Catch the Christmas spirit

Y

es, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas – and if you’re wondering where to start getting ready for the holidays, we can help. Reporter Jennifer Moreau has compiled this list to help you get ready for Christmas in the city – with places to shop, causes to help, events to attend and more.

Places to shop

While you’re picking up presents in the Heights, take in some of the festive

feel on the two Saturdays leading up to Christmas – Dec. 11 and 18. There will be strolling carollers in the neighbourhood and a “surprise visit from a Christmas guest” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, www.burnaby heights.com/lightuptheheights. Metropolis at Metrotown has a few things happening for Christmas. People can get photos taken with Santa, by donation with proceeds going to the Christmas Bureau. Look for “Santa’s Castle” in the

mall’s Grand Court. There is also a giant rocking horse in the atrium that people can ride. And if you don’t want the hassle of wrapping presents, the mall has a gift wrap service on till Dec. 24 where proceeds go to charity. The Burnaby Christmas Bureau toy room is in the mall this year, so pick up a new toy while you’re shopping and drop it off at the bureau’s toy room by Toys “R” Us.

She’s the one he’s been waiting for. Now that radio host Christy Clark has officially announced she’s in the B.C. Liberal leadership race, local MLA Harry Bloy has thrown his support behind the latest contender. “I think Christy has the experience to do it. She’s from outside the present caucus, but she’s visionary,” said Bloy, MLA for BurnabyLougheed. “She’s going to look at things differently.” Clark made the announcement about her leadership ambitions on Wednesday, although there was widespread Harry Bloy speculation about Burnaby MLA her running beforehand. She was also polling ahead of the other Liberal contenders before she even announced she was in the race. “It’s because Christy has a relationship to people. People like her,” Bloy said. Clark was born and raised in Burnaby. She graduated from a local high school and went on to study at Simon Fraser University. No stranger
