Burnaby MLA targeted on HST ‘hit list’ Richard T. Lee one of 24 B.C. Liberals named in antitax recall campaign Jennifer Moreau staff reporter
Local MLA Richard Lee has made the “HST hit list” – an inventory of 24 MLAs targeted for recall by the Fight HST campaign. The push for recall is the second phase
in the anti-HST campaign under the Recall and Initiative Act, which allows voters to challenge laws and remove MLAs from office. The first part was the anti-HST initiative petition, where canvassers had to collect 10 per cent of signatures in each of B.C.’s 85 electoral districts. Former B.C. premier Bill Vander Zalm is leading the Fight HST campaign. He said the 24 Liberals were targeted for recall because of the large number of petition signatures collected in their ridings. All those who made the “hit list”
were from ridings where 25 per cent of the electorate signed the anti-HST petition. “We haven’t decided which ones will be recalled first or how many,” Vander Zalm said in a press release. “Our sense is that we will recall one or two at a time, so as not to bring down the government but to pressure them to repeal the HST.” Lee was the only Burnaby MLA who made the list. He won his Burnaby North seat on a thin margin in the last provincial election, and his Brentwood office has been the target of regular anti-HST rallies,
organized by the Burnaby North NDP riding association. Lee said he was not surprised that he was singled out. “Ever since the campaign was going on, I’ve been a target,” he said. “It’s political. Of course the opposition can organize this kind of fight.” Lee has stated he would back the HST, even if the majority of his constituents opposed it, because he believes it’s the right thing to do for the province.
