The Main Library comes down

Stark Library’s main campus was closed to the public in August 2025. Demolition of the building has begun. “The day we closed the building, we held an event there one last time because there are a lot of people who have a strong connection to that building. It has been the main library in that location since 1978,” said Mary Ellen Icaza, CEO and executive director. The area where the former main library will be a paved parking lot for the new building being erected nearby.

Dear Member,

Over the past few months, I’ve spent time with business owners across our region — in conference rooms, on shop floors and over coffee — asking a simple question: What do you need most right now to keep moving forward? The answers vary, but the theme is consistent. Conditions are changing, and support needs to be more targeted to be truly helpful.

That’s why we’re inviting you to complete a brief, confidential Business Assessment

This assessment will give us a clearer picture of where your business stands today — from growth plans and workforce needs to capital, operations and technology. Your input will help our team connect you to the most relevant resources, programs and opportunities offered through the Chamber and our regional partners.

To be clear, this is not a sales survey. Your responses will not be shared publicly and will be used only to help the Chamber better serve your business.

By taking a few minutes to complete the assessment, you will help us:

• Match you with programs, tools and expertise aligned to your needs

• Connect you to potential grants, financing and incentive opportunities

• Shape Chamber events, education and advocacy around what matters most to businesses like yours

• Strengthen the overall business environment in Stark County

• The better we understand your reality, the more focused and valuable our work can be — for your business and for our region.

If you have questions about the assessment, please contact Melinda Kapalko, Vice President of Development & Partnership Relations. Following the survey, you can expect personalized out reach from Melinda to review your results and match you to the programs that are a fit for your business.

I encourage you to take the assessment today and help shape how the Chamber serves you in 2026 and beyond.

Thank you for your continued commitment to our business community. We look forward to moving ahead together.

Sincerely,

Marketing Matters

Two Business Owners. One Mixer. Very Different Results.

How Intention Turns One Hour into Ongoing Momentum

Two business owners attend the same Chamber mixer.

Both arrive at 5:00. Both shake hands, exchange introductions, and leave around 6:00.

One goes back to the office with three business cards.

The other walks away with a month of marketing content, new online connections, and follow-up conversations already in motion.

The difference is not in personality or in who is more extroverted. It is the intention.

Intentional Attendance

The first business owner arrives, hoping for a positive outcome.

The second shows up knowing what they want the hour to represent. Maybe it is community involvement. Maybe it is a collaboration. Maybe it is simply being visible and engaged in the local business community.

When you attend with that clarity, you start noticing moments instead of just faces. You look for conversations worth remembering. You think about what story you are telling by being in the room.

Documenting the Right Moments

Neither person hired a photographer. Neither brought a media team.

But the second business owner took a quick photo with a fellow member. They recorded a short reflection in the car before heading home. They thanked the host business publicly. They made a mental note of one conversation that stood out.

Nothing forced. Nothing staged. Just thoughtful documentation of real participation.

Extending the Conversation

The first business owner posts the next day: “Great event last night.”

The second spreads their content across the month.

One week, they spotlight the host business. The next week, they share a takeaway from a conversation about hiring challenges. Later, they highlight a new connection and why that business matters to the community.

One hour becomes several thoughtful posts shared over time. What started as a single event becomes weeks of steady visibility.

Connecting Online and Offline

Here is where the return multiplies.

After the event, the second business owner connects on LinkedIn with a short personal message. They send a follow-up email referencing a specific discussion. They introduce two members who would benefit from getting to know each other.

Their social media reflects real conversations. Their follow-up reinforces real relationships.

Marketing and networking begin to support each other rather than operate separately.

The Difference Is Intention

The impact of a Chamber event is not confined to the hour you spend there. The real opportunity begins after the conversations end.

When you attend with intention, capture meaningful moments, and follow through thoughtfully, that single evening can support ongoing visibility and stronger business relationships. It is not about doing more. It is about making the time you already invest more meaningful.

If you would like support building a practical approach that connects event participation with steady, strategic marketing, our team at UB Advertising is always happy to connect.

Clear Vision Marketing & Media Overview

James Warnken, CPACC

Digital Marketing & Digital Accessibility Consultant

330-936-2556

james@jameswarnken.com

https://www.jameswarnken.com/

Formed in 2019, Clear Vision Marketing & Media LLC has provided services to organizations all around the world with one goal in mind: creating a better experience for the end user. Owned and operated by James Warnken, Clear Vision focuses on creating and maintaining an accessible and usable experience for everyone, especially individuals with disabilities who use and rely on assistive technology. James is a part of the disability community as he has been progressively losing his vision since the age of 9. Clear Vision is recognized in the state of Ohio as an EDGE Certified, disabled-owned small business. Every member of the team holds the globally recognized IAAP CPACC accessibility certification, along with identifying as a person with a disability. This means that every member of the team uses assistive technology and alternative input methods throughout their daily lives, not just while at work. This ensures that our services accurately reflect true user experiences, rather than learned behaviors.

About James Warnken, CPACC

James Warnken is the Owner and CEO of Clear Vision Marketing & Media LLC and the Founder and Executive Director of Stark A11y (pronounced ally). He is a legally blind/visually impaired digital accessibility expert and consultant, passionate about helping organizations make their digital spaces truly work for everyone. With a background in digital

marketing, technology, and business, combined with more than 19 years of lived experience with vision loss, he focuses on making accessibility goals both actionable and affordable for organizations of all sizes.

In 2006, when he was 9, he was diagnosed with Stargardt’s disease and has been slowly losing his vision ever since, learning early on to adapt by using braille, a cane, and self-advocacy when something was not accessible or equitable. That experience shaped how he approaches his work today: accessibility is not just a box to check, but a way to ensure that employees and customers have the same opportunities and experiences, no matter their abilities. During college, he launched a clothing brand that became a sandbox for learning website development and design, social media, paid advertising, and how to build and scale a business, which later evolved into supporting other local businesses with their digital marketing and accessibility needs.

Today, he has trained hundreds of professionals on the importance of digital accessibility and best practices, and has led more than 50 accessibilityfocused projects across government, nonprofit, and private organizations. Whether working on websites, digital documents, or broader digital strategies, my goal is to help teams move from uncertainty to clarity so they can confidently serve their entire audience inclusively.

Canton Regional Chamber 401(k) Retirement Program

NEWBENEFITALERT! ALLMEMBERSELIGIBLE

A strong retirement benefit program can help businesses of all sizes gain a competitive edge to attract and retain talent — but it can also mean added costs and responsibility. A multiple employer plan (MEP) may be an attractive option for businesses seeking to ease the administrative burden, fiduciary risk, and expense of offering a quality retirement plan. The Canton Regional Chamber has partnered with the Greater Akron Chamber to offer this benefit to all members.

What is a MEP?

It’s a retirement plan sponsored by one entity for unrelated organizations that share a common business interest.

How it works

• MEP sponsor is the “lead” plan and generally the plan administrator and fiduciary

• “Adopting employers” can elect to join the MEP

• These plans can be defined contribution (DC) or defined benefit (DB) plans

• At any time, adopting employers are easily integrated into the plan hosted by the sponsor and tracked on the Transamerica platform

Coping with Tariffs—How Small Businesses Can Stay Profitable

For small businesses generating between $1 million and $7 million annually, tariffs aren’t just a policy debate—they’re an immediate cost that can sharply reduce profitability1. These companies often import materials or finished products and typically lack the pricing power, supply chain diversity, or financial buffer of larger corporations. As a result, small businesses in this revenue range are especially vulnerable in today’s tariff-heavy environment.

Immediate Financial Strain

Tariffs between 10 percent and 100 percent depending on the product and origin2 have placed a disproportionate burden on smaller firms. Most businesses in this range simply cannot pass along the full cost to customers without risking sales. Instead, they are forced to operate on thinner margins or even at a loss.

There’s also a so-called “triple-whammy” effect at play: costs rise not just from the tariffs themselves but also from higher freight prices, increased inventory holding costs, and the administrative burden of finding new suppliers3

For importers and manufacturers, the stakes are even higher. A single container of high-value goods may cost over $100,000 more than before4 Without access to traditional bank financing, many small firms are turning to high-interest, non-bank lending to cover the gap—adding further pressure to cash flow.

Revenue Pressures and Customer Relationships

According to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, small firms anticipate sales to be nearly 9 percent lower than expected due to the difficulty of passing along tariff-related costs5. This forces many to raise prices anyway, risking customer loyalty.

That’s a delicate balance. If competitors have better supplier arrangements or avoided tariffs altogether, they can undercut prices— leading to lost market share for smaller companies. Price-sensitive customers may delay purchases or seek alternatives, driving down total revenue6

Supply Chain Reconfiguration and Planning Challenges

The unpredictability of tariffs—being lifted, imposed, or reconfigured depending on shifting trade policy—makes long-term planning difficult. Small business owners face operational disruption when trying to forecast costs, manage inventory, or make hiring decisions with uncertain inputs7

In response, many are shifting sourcing from Asia to domestic suppliers or partners in Canada or Mexico. While this might reduce tariff exposure, it’s not always feasible—especially for businesses requiring specialized or proprietary parts8.

Strategies to Stay Resilient

Despite these challenges, there are ways for small businesses to adapt:

• Renegotiating supplier terms: Some importers ask their overseas suppliers to absorb part of the tariff cost9.

• Dynamic pricing: Businesses are increasingly adopting flexible pricing models tied to input costs.

• Supplier diversification: Reducing reliance on any one country— particularly China—is now a top priority.

• Cost reduction: Many companies are cutting discretionary expenses like marketing or in-house staff to preserve margin10.

Although none of these strategies offers a perfect solution, each helps lessen the financial blow and extends runway during a turbulent trade cycle.

Final Thought

For small businesses in the $1–$7 million range, the 2026 tariff environment isn’t just a temporary policy shift. It can be the difference between steady growth and breaking even—or worse. With the right blend of strategic planning and financial discipline, businesses can stay resilient and move forward despite the headwinds.

Identifying and reporting suspected claim fraud

The word “fraud” carries a heavy connotation with it and making a fraud referral to the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation can feel a bit overwhelming. What should you do if you suspect that a fraudulent claim has been filed against you? The Bureau of Workers’ Compensation has an entire division devoted to analyzing and investigating fraud concerns. The Special Investigations Department was created in 1994 with the sole purpose of reviewing potential fraud in the workers’ compensation system.

According to the Bureau’s Special Investigations Department Annual Report from 2025, they received 2,164 fraud allegations and ultimately closed 1,395 cases with 56 resulting in convictions for an identified savings of $91 million dollars.

It is important to understand the activities that are most associated with potential workers’ compensation claim fraud:

• Collecting disability benefits while receiving compensation

• Receiving cash payment for work performed “under the table”

• Claiming to be injured while at work when the injury happened elsewhere

• Exaggeration of disability complaints to extend disability

• Falsifying documents related to a claim application

Employers are often notified of potential fraud either from co-workers who witnessed or heard about the suspected incident or through personal observation, such as seeing a post on social media. Should you suspect one or more of the above activities you should contact the BWC Fraud unit to report a concern. You can do this either through the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation’s website or by contacting the BWC Fraud department directly at 1.800.644.6292.
