Dear Member,

Over the past few months, I’ve spent time with business owners across our region — in conference rooms, on shop floors and over coffee — asking a simple question: What do you need most right now to keep moving forward? The answers vary, but the theme is consistent. Conditions are changing, and support needs to be more targeted to be truly helpful.

That’s why we’re inviting you to complete a brief, confidential Business Assessment

This assessment will give us a clearer picture of where your business stands today — from growth plans and workforce needs to capital, operations and technology. Your input will help our team connect you to the most relevant resources, programs and opportunities offered through the Chamber and our regional partners.

To be clear, this is not a sales survey. Your responses will not be shared publicly and will be used only to help the Chamber better serve your business.

By taking a few minutes to complete the assessment, you will help us:

• Match you with programs, tools and expertise aligned to your needs

• Connect you to potential grants, financing and incentive opportunities

• Shape Chamber events, education and advocacy around what matters most to businesses like yours

• Strengthen the overall business environment in Stark County

• The better we understand your reality, the more focused and valuable our work can be — for your business and for our region.

If you have questions about the assessment, please contact Melinda Kapalko, Vice President of Development & Partnership Relations. Following the survey, you can expect personalized out reach from Melinda to review your results and match you to the programs that are a fit for your business.

I encourage you to take the assessment today and help shape how the Chamber serves you in 2026 and beyond.

Thank you for your continued commitment to our business community. We look forward to moving ahead together.

Sincerely,

Join fellow Leadership Stark County alumni for a unique evening at the historic Canton Palace Theatre on Thursday, February 26th. Enjoy a 20-minute silent film followed by an exclusive 45-minute behind-the-scenes tour. A fun, one-of-a-kind experience you won’t want to miss!

new hub for its backend services. The Operations Center serves all 10 library locations. Construction of the new center and new Main Library will cost about $66 million altogether, paid for with the library’s capital fund and borrowing from the state’s Public Library Fund. Staff was fully moved in at the beginning of January. Demolition of Main Library beginning within the next few weeks. The building is being torn down to make room for a brand new Main Library, which is expected to be complete in 2028.

My name is Joshua Phillips. I have over 12 years of hands on experience across multiple hotel brands and operational roles. My career

began immediately after graduating from the University of Akron, when I joined the Sheraton Suites in Cuyahoga Falls as a Night Auditor. Over nine years in that role, I developed a deep understanding of hotel operations, guest relations, and the importance of consistency in delivering exceptional service.

Building on that foundation, I transitioned to the Comfort Inn & Suites as Front Desk Manager. Under the leadership of General Manager Lisa Keim, I expanded my operational knowledge, strengthened my leadership capabilities, and gained valuable insight into effective hotel management and team development.

After three successful years in that role, I earned the opportunity to become the General Manager of the Comfort Suites in Hartville. Since stepping into the position in January, I have been responsible for overseeing all aspects of hotel operations, driving guest satisfaction, supporting staff growth, and ensuring the property meets brand and financial expectations.

OSHA Injury Tracking Application (ITA)

Online Submission

Now that 2025 is behind us, hopefully you have finalized your OSHA Injury and Illness Log for 2025 and printed, signed and posted the 300A Summary form in a conspicuous location. This was due on February 1st and the Summary form must remain posted until April 30th. Excellent work if you have this completed, however, some employers may still have one more step – submitting their injury and illness information online to OSHA.

If you are unsure whether or not you are required to complete this online submission, the best way to check this is by going to OSHA’s Injury Tracking Application (ITA) Coverage Application at https://www.osha.gov/itareportapp. Input the required information on company size, location and industry type, then hit the “Submit” button and it will tell you what reports, if any, will need to be submitted. You may be required to submit information from your OSHA 300A Summary Form and possibly, information from your OSHA 300 Log and OSHA 301 “Injury and Illness Incident Report”. If your establishment is required to submit online, you must go to OSHA’s Injury Tracking Application at https://www.osha.gov/injuryreporting/ita/. If you are a New User to the website, you will first need to create an ITA account.

Once that has been completed, the second step is “Sign in with Login.Gov“ account. You must use the same email address when setting up your ITA Account and your Login.Gov Account. Be sure to follow the steps under “Get help submitting your injury and illness date”. The page allows you to access:

• OSHA’s Injury Reporting Page

• ITA Frequently Asked Questions

• OSHA’s Recordkeeping Page

• Help Desk Ticket

• OSHA’s ITA Data Page

Once you have successfully set up an account, then you can submit the required information. This may just be the OSHA 300A Summary information or it may also include information from your OSHA 300 Log and OSHA Form 301 (remember, you can determine what data is required for submission from the ITA Coverage Application we discussed above). The online submission is a fairly straight forward process, but you will need a little patience. Some of the documents or information you need will include your NAICS number, average number of employees, total work hours, OSHA 300A Summary report and, if required, your OSHA Log and OSHA 301 Form(s).

Why Small Businesses Must Embrace Technology

In an increasingly digital world, technology is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity. For small businesses hoping to compete, grow, and stay resilient, embracing technology is one of the most effective ways to ensure long-term success.

Many entrepreneurs assume that leveraging technology is something reserved for large corporations with deep pockets. However, technology actually levels the playing field. From automation to online platforms, small businesses are discovering that tech tools can provide a real competitive edge.

Technology as a Competitive Advantage

Small businesses that embrace digital tools can often compete with much larger firms. Technology reduces the barriers that once existed for reaching regional, national, or even international audiences. Through cost-effective platforms like e-commerce websites, digital marketing, and cloud-based services, small businesses can now access markets that were once beyond their reach.

This increased access doesn’t just help businesses grow—it helps them survive. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce found that 8 in 10 small business owners credit technology for helping them cope with challenges like inflation and supply chain disruptions, without needing to pass rising costs on to their customers.

Operational Efficiency and Business Growth

Running a small business means wearing many hats. Fortunately, today’s technology can take a few of those hats off your head. Cloud-based accounting software, automated inventory systems, and AI-powered marketing tools can streamline time-consuming tasks and allow owners to focus on strategy and customer engagement.

What’s more, high-tech adopters tend to report stronger performance. Businesses that integrate digital tools into their operations often see higher sales, better employee productivity, and more consistent profitability. These owners are also more optimistic about their future—likely because technology supports resilience in the face of adversity.

Technology Improves the Customer Experience

Technology isn’t just about making your operations run smoothly, it also directly improves how you serve your customers. Through customer relationship management (CRM) tools and data analytics, small businesses can better understand their customers’ preferences and behaviors. This allows for more personalized

services, quicker response times, and better communication—all factors that build long-term loyalty.

Challenges to Address

While the benefits of technology are substantial, small business owners must also navigate a few challenges.

Cybersecurity is a major concern. Small businesses are often targeted by cybercriminals because they typically lack the advanced protections of larger enterprises. Ransomware, phishing, and malware can result in data loss and costly recovery efforts. Taking proactive steps— like using firewalls, securing systems with regular updates, and training staff to recognize threats— can help mitigate these risks.

Cost and staffing present another challenge. Many small businesses cannot afford in-house IT departments, but this doesn’t have to be a barrier. Affordable cloud-based solutions and third-party Managed Service Providers (MSPs) can offer professional support without the need for a full-time team.

Staying current with rapidly evolving technology can also be overwhelming. It’s not uncommon for business owners to feel they lack the time or technical know-how to evaluate and

adopt new tools. However, starting with one or two key systems—like accounting software or CRM—can help build confidence and capacity for more digital transformation.

Finally, compliance and regulations should not be overlooked. Depending on the industry, small businesses may need to follow data privacy laws such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Failing to comply can result in penalties. Understanding the legal requirements early on can help businesses avoid surprises down the road.

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Technology may present hurdles, but it also offers remarkable opportunities. Small businesses that invest wisely, seek support, and embrace change can transform potential setbacks into steppingstones.

Whether you’re just getting started with a few digital tools or are looking to overhaul your operations with smarter systems, taking the first step is key. Technology isn’t just for surviving—it’s for thriving.
