Cantabrians are centre stage following the naming of the finalists for the 2024 Ford Ranger New Zealand Rural Sports Awards.

Ford Motor Company of New Zealand Limited Managing Director Simon Rutherford said the Ford New Zealand Rural Sports Awards provide a platform to recognise the
extraordinary talent and dedication of athletes who embody the true essence of rural New Zealand. “These finalists represent the pinnacle of excellence in their respective sports, embodying the values of dedication, perseverance, and sportsmanship that define rural New Zealand and this is why we are so pleased to support and recognise them,” Rutherford said. Seasoned veterans from Canterbury fill
two of the three spots in the Rural Sportsman of the Year Award, while the country’s most successful female harness racing driver is in line for the Rural Sportswoman of the Year Award. Sixty-nine-year-old Bob Mehrtens from Timaru is a bit of a legend in ploughing circles around New Zealand, winning accolades both in this country and in overseas competitions.
