ASwe look ahead to the next decade, there is a palpable sense of excitement at Canford. This is a moment for vision-setting: a chance to be ambitious, to think boldly about the future of our school, and to ensure that we continue to offer an education that is both aspirational and deeply rooted in our values. Our task is not simply to maintain excellence, but to build upon it with purpose, clarity and confidence.
What continues to distinguish Canford is the balance our pupils strike between high aspiration and grounded humility. They are ambitious without being entitled, confident without arrogance, and driven by a genuine desire to contribute positively to the world around them. It is this culture – carefully nurtured and authentically lived – that underpins the many accolades we are proud to celebrate. Our recent inspection highlighted pupil leadership as a significant strength, recognising the maturity, responsibility and initiative our young people demonstrate every day. Alongside this, our academic
outcomes remain consistently strong, reflecting the dedication of both pupils and staff and the intellectual curiosity that defines our community. Awards and recognition are welcome affirmations, but it is the character of our pupils that matters most.
Central to our vision is partnership. This year has seen us found the Canford Schools Group with Dumpton School, one of our closest local partners. The vision for the group is broad and wide ranging, building a collaboration of schools that offer high quality education in high autonomy partnership. Our collaboration with The Bourne Academy is a powerful example of what can be achieved when schools work together with shared purpose. This partnership enriches both communities, broadening opportunities, deepening understanding and reinforcing our commitment to education as a force for social good. We are proud of what we have achieved together and excited by what lies ahead.
Equally important is our commitment to widening access to a Canford education. The Martin Marriott Foundation
for bursaries stands as a lasting testament to Martin’s extraordinary contribution to the school and his deep belief in opportunity for all. At his memorial service on 1st February, we celebrated his life, his legacy and the profound impact he had on Canford. In his memory, we hope to grow this fund significantly, enabling more young people to access Canford regardless of their means. This is not simply about financial support; it is about opening doors, changing trajectories and ensuring that talent and potential are never limited by circumstance.
As we embark on this next chapter, we do so with gratitude for the past, confidence in the present and great optimism for the future. Together, as a community, we will continue to shape Canford with ambition, integrity and heart.

News from the DEVELOPMENT OFFICE
As I write, the calendar has just flipped over to 2024 offering a natural moment for reflection on the past year. What an extraordinary year 2023 was for the Canford community! A year ago at this exact time, I felt a profound responsibility to deliver a memorable series of events and celebrations to commemorate the School’s Centenary.
centenary doesn’t mean that the normal in the Development Office can grind to continued to organise the usual OC reunions, Friends events and still managed to find time to the Martin Marriott Foundation (MMF) and projects. You will read later in this report about that our fundraising can make.
DEVELOPMENT OFFICE FROM THE
Celebrating a centenary doesn’t mean that the normal day-to-day work in the Development Office can grind to a halt. We continued to organise the usual OC reunions, numerous Friends events and still managed to find time to raise funds for the Martin Marriott Foundation (MMF) and a few other projects. You will read later in this report about the difference that our fundraising can make.
ASand political climate is rarely stable but constant is that young people need our ways. At Canford it is our duty and pleasure access to bright, talented young people who so much to our community in numerous lack the financial backing to afford fees. my ninth year at Canford, the list of that the MMF has supported continues commitment from School funds and your help. Young OCs are going out into the difference and are forever grateful for the that you have helped to provide. More details explore the possibility of establishing fund, aiming to offer ongoing, sustainable pupils to access a Canford education.
Crafting a programme that appeals to all members of our community entails designing something that will interest people whose ages range from nought to one hundred plus. That’s quite a wide range and we realise that not everything is attractive to everyone. However, for our two major centenary events, I can confidently say that all members of the community were represented in some way. The musical elements of the Foundation Service in Salisbury Cathedral and Proms in the Park on Mountjoy at Canford meant that pupils, staff and OCs were involved. The open invitation to both events saw our most senior OCs, international OCs, parents, staff and young OC families attend with little ones, making both events as inclusive as possible.
I reflect on the past year, I am struck by the enduring strength of the Canford community and the pleasure it is to bring people together across generations. The work of the Development Office sits at the heart of that connectioncreating opportunities for Old Canfordians, parents, pupils and friends of the School to return, reconnect and renew their relationship with Canford. Whether through reunions, sporting fixtures or shared experiences at School, there is always a genuine sense of warmth and belonging that makes these occasions such a joy to organise. The Development Office is a team of two – small but mighty – so it is important that I mention and thank Rachael Daniel for her dedicated support and enthusiasm over the past year.
to 2024, the calendar is once again events, both familiar and new. I encourage and actively participate. I don’t hear regrets return for reunions or attend Canford understand that many are unable to make it. year you engage. As we bid farewell to my gratitude to everyone in the Canford your support and enthusiasm. I look forward 2024.
For those with a sporting interest, an OC hockey fixture with Stowe was re-visited and former OC Boat Club captains took part in a row past at Henley Royal Regatta. From a visual arts perspective, we were delighted to commission the Canford Sphere and mural so generously sponsored by donors. Staff enjoyed a morning break with a difference indulging in homemade cakes for the 100th birthday bake-off and small gatherings took place in different parts of the globe.
Designing an events programme that appeals to a community spanning more than eight decades in age is no small task, but it is one we approach with enthusiasm and care. This year we have continued to develop a varied programme, with a few new events, alongside much-loved fixtures for parents and supporters of the School. It has been encouraging to see both new initiatives and established events so well supported, and I am grateful to everyone who has joined us and contributed to their success.
We are a team of two! I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rachael Daniel, Development Officer, who played a major part in all aspects of the Centenary year along with the fabulous support that we received from Canford staff and alumni. From the positive and congratulatory feedback we’ve received I feel content that for the most part, we got it right!
Alongside this activity, our commitment to raising funds for bursaries remains unwavering. In a changing and challenging landscape for independent schools, Canford’s determination to widen access for bright and talented pupils is both a moral
imperative and a defining strength. The generosity of our donors, (a few of which are highlighted later in this report) enables us to offer life-changing opportunities to pupils who enrich the School in countless ways, and I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all who support this vital work. Excerpts from informal chats with bursary recipients highlight just what a difference your support makes to so many – not just the individual recipient. There is still much more we hope to achieve, and we are deeply appreciative of every contribution that helps us move closer to that goal.
The economic and political climate is rarely stable but what remains constant is that young people need our help in many ways. At Canford it is our duty and pleasure to increase access to bright, talented young people who can contribute so much to our community in numerous ways but simply lack the financial backing to afford fees. As I embark on my ninth year at Canford, the list of young people that the MMF has supported continues to grow with commitment from School funds and your most generous help. Young OCs are going out into the world making a difference and are forever grateful for the opportunities that you have helped to provide. More details will follow as we explore the possibility of establishing an endowment fund, aiming to offer ongoing, sustainable support for pupils to access a Canford education.
With new initiatives alongside familiar favourites, and the continued development of Canford Global Connect making it easy to stay in touch, there are many ways to remain involved and engaged. We are always pleased to welcome you back to Canford so don’t be a stranger! If you can’t make an event, are not a regular visitor, but happen to be passing or in the area, do get in touch, we would be delighted to see you.
Looking ahead to 2024, the calendar is once again brimming with events, both familiar and new. I encourage you to join us and actively participate. I don’t hear regrets from those who return for reunions or attend Canford events, but I understand that many are unable to make it. Let 2024 be the year you engage. As we bid farewell to 2023, I extend my gratitude to everyone in the Canford community for your support and enthusiasm. I look forward to seeing you in 2024.
I very much hope that you will join us in the year ahead and continue to support the work of the Development Office and the wider School.

THE MARTIN MARRIOTT FOUNDATION IN
The Martin Marriott FOUNDATION
December 2026, the Martin Marriott Foundation will celebrate its tenth anniversary. I vividly remember the conversation we shared with former Headmaster Martin Marriott and his wife Judith when we asked whether we might name Canford’s bursary programme in his honour. They were both immediately touched and delighted that Martin’s legacy at the School would live on - not only recognising his years of leadership, but, more importantly, his deep belief that a Canford education should be accessible to talented pupils regardless of a family’s financial circumstances.
On 6 December 2016, over 100 Old Canfordians gathered at the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple to mark the birth of the Foundation. In February 2026, members of the Marriott generation will come together once again - this time to celebrate the lives of Martin and Judith, following Martin’s passing in August last year, and to reflect on the extraordinary impact of their shared commitment to education.
At the end of Canford’s 100th birthday, it is with real pleasure and pride that we can celebrate a bursary programme that is growing and supporting children who are thriving, grasping every opportunity offered to them and thoroughly enjoying their Canford education. This is only made possible by our generous donors. Not only are you changing the lives of individual pupils but their presence within both the Canford community and their home communities enriches the lives of many others. The beauty of the Martin Marriott Foundation is that in helping individuals, they each go out into the wider world with the inbuilt responsibility to not only flourish themselves but to help others. YOU are making that happen.
for financial support, underlining just how vital the Foundation’s work remains. Pupils who attend Canford on a fully funded bursary experience a truly transformative education - one that enables them to fulfil their potential, achieve their aspirations, and go on not only to succeed themselves, but also to give back to their own communities and inspire others to aim high. This impact is only possible because of you, our donors. We thank you most sincerely for your generosity and for your continued support of this vital work.
THE FUTURE
We have ambitious plans for our bursary programme and make no apology for this.
Our aim is to have 10% of our pupils on 100% bursaries by 2033.
We need your help to achieve this.
In 2023 we raised over £379,000 for the MMF to support a number of pupils. This encapsulates collective giving from our generous and loyal regular donors and one-off donations.
At Canford 89 pupils (13.7%) are in receipt of bursary support
44 pupils (6.7%) receive 70%+ support (this includes the 19 below)
19 pupils (3%) receive 100% support
We currently have five pupils in receipt of a bursary who are being funded individually by Old Canfordians and Canford parents. Donors receive an anonymised annual report about the pupil(s) they are supporting. This is a very special commitment and one which our donors take seriously but in turn, gain a lot of joy from.
Over the past nine years, the Martin Marriott Foundation has gone from strength to strength in supporting pupils to experience a Canford education.
13.1% of pupils at Canford are in receipt of bursary support
Currently, five pupils are receiving bursaries solely funded by specific Old Canfordians and Canford parents. These donors receive anonymised annual reports about the pupils they support. This is a special commitment, one that donors approach with dedication and, in return, find deeply rewarding.
6.6% receive 75% in bursary support
The need that Martin identified during his time as Headmaster remains very much present today. We continue to see a growing number of applications
Currently the bursary fund operates on a ‘pay as you go’ model. Donations made are generally utilised and drawn down within one year to fund pupils. This approach provides instant impact and satisfaction for our donors, who see their gift realised during their lifetime. To provide a more stable and enduring source of support, we are in the throes of researching an endowment model as another donation option which could provide a continuous long term source of financial assistance. This stability would allow for ongoing support to deserving pupils, creating a lasting impact on their educational journeys and in turn, the security of the School.
We hope that an endowment fund will inspire potential donors in knowing that their contributions will have a lasting impact and serve as a legacy and impact on the education of future Canfordians. More details about our endowment plans will be available in the coming year.
If you would like to find out more about supporting a Canford pupil, please contact Rowena Gaston rjg@canford.com
3.3% receive 100% in bursary support
Whilst an endowment fund is a long term plan, there are still many pupils who need help today and we will continue to support as many children as possible but to do that we need your help. If you would like to discuss how you might support our bursary programme, please email Rowena Gaston rjg@canford.com.
JANE VACHER
Former Housemistress, Marriotts House 1997-2003
“Martin Marriott cared deeply about nurturing the talent, energy and potential of every Canford pupil, and it was his wish to make it possible for those not so privileged to be able to enjoy and benefit from what Canford had to offer.
The Martin Marriott Foundation Bursary Fund has enabled this wish to be realised. He was an inspiring man who loved Canford, its pupils and all the staff who made up the Canford community. I feel honoured to have known him and to have entertained him in Marriotts House as Housemistress. He was excited, as I was, by the transition of the school to co-ed in the late 1990s!
It is really nice to know that my monthly contributions to the Bursary Fund can help make a difference to individuals who would not otherwise have been able to experience such a unique education.”
WHY I GIVE?
“ “
JAMES KELLY S24
“Canford provides a variety of excellent departments that really encourage curiosity. Design was a department that encouraged this for me. I was able to expand my knowledge in the subject as well as teach it as a volunteer and former student at The Bourne Academy.
The Martin Marriot Foundation is an access route that provides individuals to further their curiosity in ways which they may have been limited.
What I learnt at Canford has enabled me to progress onto The University of Nottingham to read Mechanical Engineering. This is something I believe wouldn’t have been possible for me without the support of the Foundation. I therefore was pleased to start making a regular donation to support other young people to have this opportunity.”
“I have been giving to the Martin Marriott Foundation because my son, Jansci Motsi, has benefited greatly from it. As a single mother who always wanted her son to attend private boarding school, the Foundation played a pivotal role in making that dream a reality. He began private education from primary school and is now an intelligent young man currently studying Law.
The opportunities and support provided by the Foundation helped him reach his full potential in ways that would not have been possible without attending Canford. He has grown into a witty, intelligent, confident, resilient, and focused individual - truly an all-rounder - and I am a proud mother.
I will continue to donate for as long as I am able, so that other children can benefit as my son has. This is my way of giving back and expressing my gratitude to the Foundation for giving my son the opportunity to make his mark on society.”

FUNDRAISING
PERSONAL STORIES
The following quotes provide a taste of the difference our bursary programme makes with the support of your generous donations.
LEON
Leon first encountered Canford through sporting visits and swimming galas, admiring the School but believing it was completely out of reach. That changed when his family discovered the bursary programme. Starting in 2020, during the height of the pandemic, was dauntingbut music and sport soon became his bridge into Canford life. Together with a bursary he received fully funded saxophone lessons, Leon joined the Jazz Band, became lead saxophonist, achieved Grade 8, and performed a solo on Speech Day. He also made the 1st tennis team.
“My confidence has grown massively. Canford has opened up my world in ways I never imagined.”
ISAAC
Quiet and reserved at primary school, Isaac arrived at Canford unsure of himself and not knowing anyone. Five years on, Court House feels like a home from home. He threw himself into sport, discovering a passion for athletics and broke the school record for the 100m sprint. He also challenged himself beyond sport, performing in the school musical and taking part in the Wellbeing Festival. One of his proudest moments was climbing Snowdonia on a school expedition.
“I’ve put myself in challenging situations and grown because of them. The education I’ve received at Canford has been truly transformational.”
MARISSA
Marissa moved to the UK from Brazil at 14, navigating a new culture while learning English a second language.
Joining Canford Sixth Form on a full bursary felt surreal but she settled quickly, inspired by the teaching and breadth of opportunity. She immersed herself in academic life and co-curricular activities including Model United Nations, House Film and Heretics. Through Crossfire and Chapel, she also found the confidence to speak publicly about her faith - something she once thought impossible.
“Canford has challenged me to aim far higher than I ever thought possible.”
ELLIOT
Elliot’s journey to Canford began unexpectedly at an Old Canfordian reunion and quickly became life-changing. Offered a bursary place, he embraced boarding life and thrived on the academic challenge. “I was pushed in lessons in a way I’d never experienced before.” He found structure and camaraderie through the CCF, explored debating and Model United Nations, and discovered a passion for the Army. With mentoring from staff, Elliot was awarded one of just 35 Army Scholarships nationally, funding his degree at King’s College London and leading to Sandhurst.
“Without the bursary, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
SYLVIO
Initially unsure about independent education, Sylvio’s visit to Canford changed his outlook entirely. After a full bursary became available with the help of an OC sponsor, he joined the School and gradually found his feet, discovering the power of smaller classes and personalised teaching.
“After my first Chemistry lesson, I knew it was going to be OK.” Sylvio embraced every aspect of school life - from football and basketball to drama, Model United Nations and leadership as Head of ACMC (African, Caribbean and Mixed Community Group). Surrounded by ambitious peers, his aspirations grew.
“Canford opened my eyes to what’s possible.”
MELISA
Coming from a state school with large classes, Melisa found Canford’s academic environment transformative.
Awarded both an academic scholarship and a bursary, she quickly immersed herself in boarding life and embraced the diversity of the community. What struck her most was the classroom experience: “At Canford, asking questions is encouraged - it completely changed how I learn.” Beyond lessons, she represented the School in multiple sports, joined the CCF Marines, performed in musicals, debated, and took part in the fashion show.
“I never really enjoyed school until I came to Canford. Now I’m excited to come in every single day.”
ZARA
Zara arrived at Canford Sixth Form determined but overwhelmed, struggling to balance academic pressure with a demanding home life as a young carer. Following an ADHD diagnosis, targeted support - and later the opportunity to board - proved transformational.
“For the first time, I could fully concentrate and truly thrive.” With renewed confidence, Zara flourished academically and became deeply involved in the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and Youth Parliament. She will be the first in her family to attend university, going on to study Neuroscience with Honours.
“The support I’ve received has completely changed my life.”
GIANLUCA
Gianluca joined Canford Sixth Form after discovering he couldn’t pursue his chosen A levels elsewhere. Offered a bursary, he threw himself into school life - and on his second day auditioned for the school musical. Having never performed before, he landed the lead role and later received a drama scholarship. Drama helped him build friendships across year groups and grow in confidence, while flexible support from staff allowed him to continue football refereeing.
“Canford taught me to say yes to opportunities. I took a leap - and everything changed.”

Each year we take the opportunity to thank and honour those who have signalled an intention to leave a gift in their Will to Canford by inviting them to the Nineveh Legacy Society Lunch. It is a lovely occasion to see our donors gather together, meet with other Old Canfordians over lunch and listen to an OC who has benefited from a bursary place. Anna van Wingerden jumped at the chance to join us and share with us just what her place at Canford meant to her, how it helped to shape who she is today and how she regularly uses valuable skills that she learnt at Canford.

In many ways, providing for Canford in your Will is the greatest gift you can make to the School. It signifies your belief in all that Canford stands for and creates an enduring testimony beyond your death. In the past year, three Old Canfordians who made such a commitment sadly passed away and I would like to take this opportunity to share their commitment and passion for Canford.

Alegacy gift is a powerful expression of belief in Canford’s values. It is a commitment that reaches far beyond a lifetime, helping to ensure that future generations of pupils can benefit from the same opportunities, education and sense of belonging that define the Canford experience.

Rodney Jelfs S46 might be known to some OCs for helping to organise the OC Northern Lunch in past years. I unfortunately never met Rodney in person but spoke to him on the telephone and his character and enthusiasm for life was infectious, he was such a positive and outgoing man. Living in the north of England made it difficult for him to attend events but he kept in touch regularly via email. It was during Lockdown in 2020 that Rodney called to let me know that he would like to make a gift in his Will to Canford. “I like reading about what you are achieving with the bursary programme and I want to be able to help…”. Rodney’s legacy has allowed a bright talented pupil to attend Canford on a 100% bursary place.

Could you pledge a gift in your Will that would last a lifetime?
in their Will by welcoming them to the Nineveh Legacy Society Lunch. This special occasion brings together members of the Society to enjoy lunch, connect with one another, and meet some of our current Canfordians. This year, we were privileged to hear from Alex Walter S90, who spoke movingly about the transformative impact that an assisted place had on his education and the bursary place subsequently awarded to his son Elliot.
Leaving a gift in your Will is one of the greatest legacies you can offer to Canford - a lasting contribution that reflects your generosity, your values, and your belief in the power of education. This year, we remember with gratitude Ian Yates F50 who made this commitment. His dedication to the School lives on through the opportunities created for others.
you to OC Anna vanWingerden L18 for joining us.
CANFORD ONLINE AUCTION
Once again, the Canford community rose magnificently to the occasion. Our annual online auction at the end of 2025 showcased an outstanding array of prizes and attracted enthusiastic support from across our community. Thanks to this collective generosity, we raised an impressive £32,406, to be shared between the Martin Marriott Foundation, Friends of Canford School, and The Richard Porter Family Foundation.
We are enormously grateful to everyone who donated prizes, placed bids, and helped spread the word. Your commitment and generosity not only made the auction a success, but continues to have a meaningful impact on the causes it supports.
A NEW TROPHY CABINET FOR THE BOAT CLUB
We were delighted to accept a generous donation from OC Susie Jones M25 (2025 Boat Club Captain) to purchase a new trophy cabinet for the Boat Club. Pictured is Susie with her grandmother, April Ashton.
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Our 2024/25 Artist in Residence, Jeroen Cavents is a versatile visual artist and educator, trained at LUCA School of Arts Brussels, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, and has a master’s in Curatorial Studies from HGB Leipzig. Working across photography, installation, and sculpture, he explores the aesthetics of the overlooked, revealing beauty in places often dismissed as unsightly.
Jeroen’s tenure was funded thanks to the generosity of a parent donor. He established a studio in the Art School and created work inspired by our local environment and cities including Brighton, Bristol, and London. His exhibitions offered fresh perspectives on British culture and the everyday. Pupils, staff, and parents engaged with his ideas and experimented with cyanotype, salt printing, screen printing, papermaking, and curatorial practice, while Old Canfordians and parents enjoyed a bespoke cyanotype workshop.
Jeroen’s intellect, creativity, and warmth enriched our creative community and his constant whistling, a sign of his happiness in his work, will be fondly remembered.

I’ve always had an inquisitive nature, but at my old school I felt like that curiosity was discouraged. I was embarrassed to explore what interested me At Canford, I’ve found real inner confidence through the range of activities I’ve been involved in I’ve grown into a well-rounded person - and I certainly wouldn’t be as clever as I am now without this experience My peers have challenged me in the best possible way

FRIENDS OF CANFORD ROWING
Chat GPT describes our part of the Stour as: “serene, elegant and gently pastoral, enhancing both the beauty and atmosphere of the School Grounds.”
We agree, but it is so much more. Behind that serenity we see, a hive of activity, hard work, success, fun, friendships and sad goodbyes. Throughout 2025 river banks up and down the country have echoed with cries of “Go Canford”, from Avon to Nottingham, Eton, Hammersmith and Chiswick to Putney. The Easter Tea and Cake at The Boathouse raised funds to support rowing activities and enabled the purchase of new blades.
Despite heavy rain at the House Regatta in June, thanks to the resilience of our rowers, the brass band and hardy cheering parents, racing continued regardless. The Pimm’s tent & Friends of Canford Rowing (FCR) hats raised valued funds. True to his word, Ben Vessey joined a crew for the highly anticipated Parents Race which ran for the second year providing entertainment for all.
As ever, the Annual Boat Club Dinner sold out. Guest speaker Matt Aldridge (Bronze Medallist 2024 Olympics.) gave an inspirational talk detailing the highs and real lows of international rowing demonstrating the need for resilience and determination. The evening also saw a hugely successful auction, brilliantly presided over by Shell parent Cath Daniels which raised £2,335 resulting in the naming of the new boat ‘The Ben Vessey’.
Support for Canford rowing continued with many Canford blazers evident as the first eight qualified for Henley Royal Regatta (HRR) and successfully navigated a round of the Princess Elizabeth Cup. The Annual lunch reception at HRR was well attended by past and present Canford rowing connections. It was the perfect setting for Mr Dryden to announce his departure after 20 years as Director of Rowing.
What a year! As FCR we support all levels, from cheering on Freya and Archie competing on the international stage, to Christmas treats for festive eights. All are celebrated.
A huge thank you to all FCR members who have done a sterling job of supporting our rowers attending events, providing snacks at regattas, cheering from the riverbank, sharing knowledge and generous donations.
Looking forwards, if any parents are interested in joining the FCR we welcome experienced (if rusty) rowers and are planning a Learn To Row course in Spring, please email community@canford.com if you are interested. We are looking for kit sponsors in 2026 and would love to hear from anyone who would like to get involved.
This year will be an exciting new chapter and we look forward to welcoming the new Head of Rowing and supporting him as he leads the charge in 2026.

FRIENDS OF CANFORD
MUSIC
has been a year of renewed vigour around music at Canford under the leadership of Will Ings, Director of Music. During this first year in post he has maintained the familiar calendar while broadening opportunity for all pupils and the wider community.
The year began with the eagerly awaited annual Jazz Concert. Themed ‘The Big Band and the Big Screen’ with a range of lively hits from Mission: Impossible Theme to a Miles Davies classic, the Music School, set out club style and complemented by canapés and the Friends bar, was in full swing!
A new entry into the calendar was a smaller scale Chamber Concert in Canford Magna Church, freely available to the public within our outreach programme. Those attending were visibly moved by the quality of our outstanding soloists.
The other two major termly concerts of the year, those of Summer and Autumn, ensured the pupils forming multiple Canford Choirs, various Orchestras and groups all worked towards presenting an astonishingly broad repertoire, at a standard one gladly purchases tickets for elsewhere. While these Concerts are important showcases, a key function of the department is to provide opportunity and encourage development to all pupils. This begins with the Shell year group who all participate in some form of music making and all pupils have fun building up to performing in House Music. Meanwhile, all musicians gain practice playing on stage at informal ‘House’ concerts in front of a mini audience.
Thus pupils are encouraged to build up their skill, working towards the headline concerts among more experienced peers, until they themselves take the lead, a process so rewarding to witness. This year a new prize was introduced to acknowledge promise and contribution by a junior pupil, taking the form of tickets to any musical event of their choice. Meanwhile new music tech computers are now installed and being used by a wider number of pupils.
In 2026 we are looking for an official sponsor for Canford Music. Details are available from Rowena Gaston, Director of Development. We have exciting plans for the Department and need support!
FRIENDS OF CANFORD SCHOOL
This year we have again run our fund-raising events which are a great chance for parents to experience some of the facilities their children enjoy at school: a taster of the complex game of Real tennis, trying rifle shooting on the range, our fascinating History Tour of the manor house and learning about the 400+ tree species in the grounds on the Arboretum Tour.
Quiz Night is our biggest fundraiser and was enjoyed by many as they grappled with questions ranging from crisp flavours to pop music and enjoyed a tasty lasagna in the wonderful setting of the Great Hall. Spring Lunch is always a popular and delicious affair and this year saw Lottie Longman, Mrs Vessey’s sister, speak about her sustainable floristry business, her well connected customers, her Royal Warrant and practical tips on modern arrangements and planting your own flower garden. Yet again we had the weather on our side and the sun shone for our Golf Day when teams of parents, students, OCs and, of course, keen golfer Mr Vessey battled it out on the school’s golf course before enjoying a sociable BBQ under the trees. During the year FCS have provided support grants to partnership projects at City Reach in Southampton, Bourne Academy and food drives for Wimborne Food Bank.
For the first time this year we helped fund ‘The Poverty Trap’ immersive workshop for the Shell year group where they got to experience a simulation of the extremely tough living conditions of a city slum.
The past school year has brought change to The Friends of Canford. Our previous Chair, Tiffany Fleming, stepped down in January. We are grateful for all her hard work over the years and extensive local knowledge and contacts. In August, Canford’s Headmaster, Mr Ben Vessey left the school. He has always been a strong supporter of FCS, and we thank him for his very generous support in the organisational, administrative and logistical help the school provide to the Friends of Canford.
FRIENDS OF CANFORD SCHOOL
Old Canfordians and parents joined Lower Sixth pupils for the annual Canford Careers Convention, an established event now in its 22nd year, designed to help pupils build professional connections across the Canford network and beyond. This year, we were delighted to welcome Moore Barlow Lawyers as the Convention’s first sponsor and are very grateful for their support.
The Convention aims to develop pupils’ interpersonal and communication skills, broaden their understanding of career pathways beyond school, and encourage
meaningful connections that may lead to mentoring or work experience. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their strengths, interests and passions as they begin to consider future career choices.
More than 70 parent and Old Canfordian volunteers represented a wide range of industries, including engineering, business, finance, creative industries, entrepreneurship, science and environmental sectors. Volunteers were welcomed with coffee in the newly opened Sixth Form College Hub before the day’s programme began.
Keynote sessions were held in the Music School, featuring three Old Canfordians: Pippa Howarth
B12, Technical Advisor (Marine Pollution) and Canford Governor; Olivia Bracken B12, Post-Doctoral Researcher in Immunology at University College London; and Mary Davenport B12, A&R Manager at Ninja Tunes. Their panel discussion offered valuable insight into varied career journeys, touching on topics such as the impact of AI in the workplace and the importance of embracing unexpected opportunities.
A networking buffet lunch in the Assembly Hall provided an informal opportunity for pupils and volunteers to connect, followed by two afternoon industry panel sessions allowing for more in-depth discussion. The day concluded with a popular ‘speed networking’ session, enabling one-to-one conversations in specific areas of interest. Pupils also attended a session on creating an effective LinkedIn profile.
The event generated extremely positive feedback, with many pupils securing contacts, work experience opportunities and valuable networking skills. Volunteers and speakers later enjoyed drinks together in the Rathbone Room, bringing a successful and engaging Careers Convention to a close.

The Martin Marriott FOUNDATION
THE FUTURE
We currently have five pupils in receipt of a bursary who are being funded individually by Old Canfordians and Canford parents. Donors receive an anonymised annual report about the pupil(s) they are supporting. This is a very special commitment and one which our donors take seriously but in turn, gain a lot of joy from.
13.1% of pupils at Canford are in receipt of bursary support
6.6% receive 75% in bursary support
We have ambitious plans for our bursary programme and make no apology for this.
Our aim is to have 10% of our pupils on 100% bursaries by 2033.
We need your help to achieve this.
In 2023 we raised over £379,000 for the MMF to support a number of pupils. This encapsulates collective giving from our generous and loyal regular donors and one-off donations.
Whilst an endowment fund is a long term plan, there are still many pupils who need help today and we will continue to support as many children as possible but to do that we need your help. If you would like to discuss how you might support our bursary programme, please email Rowena Gaston rjg@canford.com.
