OPINION
Nick Lomas says:
All organisations must play their part in protecting our precious planet. We are privileged to have sites in some of the most stunning locations across the UK and it’s important that we respect them.
Sustainability is a complex issue and it means many different things to different people. It’s a huge task to make sure we focus on the right things – for example, using renewable energy; reducing consumption of electricity, gas and water; reducing and recycling waste; encouraging nature or supporting local communities. To ensure we have a robust framework for measuring what we do and the progress we are making, we work with Green Tourism using the pillars ‘People’, ‘Places’ and ‘Planet’ to help our approach, engage our staff and to get support from members.
“ We work with Green
Tourism using the pillars
‘People’, ‘Places’ and ‘Planet’ ”
You will have seen a number of changes (many trialled and tested) over the last few years. We are great believers in not jumping in, but instead trying something out, seeing how it is received by members and staff, and evaluating whether it makes a difference. Electric metering trials are ongoing and we aim to enhance the user experience at Wyatts Covert by the end of the year. You may have noticed the Non-Electric Saver trial, which is now available in five locations with the potential for more later in the year, subject to your feedback. These both aim to help members save money by reducing consumption. We have reduced waste by making many Club services easier to use digitally, and at the same time we have chosen a data centre supplier that operates our computer systems solely on renewable electricity. By asking members to consider the need for a physical membership card every year, we’ve reduced
the amount (and associated paperwork) by over 90%. Additionally around 6,000 members read the digital version of the magazine each month.
It’s hard to talk about scarcity of water when we have had one of the wettest winters on record. But this will hopefully soon turn into a long, dry summer, and we must do our utmost to reduce our use of this resource. We are trialling some water-saving devices at Tewkesbury and Black Knowl with sensors on taps, waterless urinals, and revised flow in the WCs and some of the showers. We are often asked whether we can do more rainwater harvesting. However, the amount that we can sensibly collect in underground tanks and the amount we need to keep facility blocks running do not match, and the tanks soon run dry. You may have seen our site teams installing water butts for rain water, though, and also new butts into which you can empty unused water from your aquarolls – this is used to help water the site.
We have previously supported No Mow May on sites. Based on staff and member feedback, we have a new, all-year approach, with No Mow Zones in appropriate places. This ensures we are not impacting your enjoyment of your pitch while creating a better environment for nature to flourish. We are also trialling a wildflower meadow approach at Moreton-in-Marsh and it will be exciting to see how that develops over the next few years. Look for nature on our sites and submit your photos to camc.com/ wildlifephotos, or use #CAMCwildlife on social media.

CLUB COUNCIL REPORT
The first Club Council meeting of the year took place in London on Saturday 27 April, chaired by the Club Chairman, David Turner. This year the meeting adopted a new format, facilitating strategic discussions between the Council, the Executive Committee and Club staff on the changing leisure market and the future touring behaviours and requirements of Club members.
The day began with a presentation from the Club’s Research and Insights Manager, Viv Harrison, covering various topics, including ‘hot off the press’ results from recent surveys. These showed that members on average rated the Club 9/10 for ‘overall experience on a UK Club campsite’. Notably, surveys revealed that members’ outfit ownership was now evenly split between caravans and motorhomes/campervans, sparking discussions on how the Club should ensure that it met the needs of the membership and its changing touring behaviour.
Subsequently, the Council engaged in collaborative group work for a couple of hours, providing feedback and ideas on several topics facilitated by Harvey Alexander, Director of Marketing and Membership Services, accompanied by Ellen Shotts, Head of Strategic Product Development. After lunch, presentations were
We present highlights from April’s meeting
delivered by Director General Nick Lomas and Mark Pearson, Director of Finance, Insurance and Management Services. The topics covered included:
CYBER SECURITY INCIDENT
Nick provided the Council with an update on the sophisticated criminal cyber security attack that occurred in January. All systems were swiftly shut down within several hours, effectively minimising the extent of the attack. The Club promptly notified the Information Commissioner’s Office, Sussex Police and the National Crime Agency, and our cyber security experts investigated the incident. Subsequently, the Club has invested in additional security upgrades and remains vigilant, acknowledging the increase in these types of attacks.
STRATEGIC GOALS, WAYS OF WORKING AND 2024 OBJECTIVES
Ensuring the wellbeing of Club staff remains a top priority for the success of the organisation. All staff members are wellversed in the Club’s Strategic Goals, which underpin their day-to-day responsibilities. In alignment with this, the Club has formulated eight ‘Ways of Working’ to continue the positive actions undertaken by the HR department, ensuring the Club remains a great place to work. Additionally, each year, a
set of objectives is established, with key areas of focus in 2024 encompassing cost controls and addressing concerns related to the cost-of-living crisis. Furthermore, efforts are being directed towards simplifying systems and processes, aimed at enhancing and streamlining existing practices.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITION
Nick highlighted the awards that the Club had received since the last council meeting, including a Gold Award from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and UKCCF National Contact Centre Awards silver. Our Green Tourism accreditation had been rapidly improving, with three campsites and the Head Office achieving Gold awards in 2023 – the goal in 2024 is for more campsites to take top honours.
SITE INVESTMENT
Nick explained that facilities would be the focus, with customer-friendly layouts that were operationally more efficient. Plans for 2024/25 include the development of the extension field at Lady Margaret’s Park and redevelopments of other campsites, including Godrevy Park, Haycraft, Edinburgh, Old

Hartley, Steamer Quay, Blackpool South and Tredegar House. The Sandringham Estate and Bridport Bingham Grange are other sites in the pipeline for improvements.
The success of the pitching trials in 2023 will be rolled out to the rest of the network, where sites permit, allowing outfits to pitch anywhere between the pegs. Additionally, the smart metering trial has already demonstrated a drop in electricity consumption and associated cost reduction for the Club and its members. This is particularly noteworthy considering electricity expenses amount to £12 million annually, constituting the second largest expenditure. These results confirmed the trial was worth continuing, and Steamer Quay will have the new metering technology installed as part of its redevelopment. ‘Fast check-in’ had been another successful trial, with 67% of members opting to use it and rating it 10/10. Plans are underway to roll it out to a further 13 locations later in 2024/25.

FINANCES
Finally, the Director General sought the Council’s views on the Club’s annual membership subscription to inform the budget approved by the Executive Committee.
Mark presented on the Club’s finances and explained that they would be reported in more detail at the Club’s 2024 AGM at Chester Racecourse in October. He touched on some significant points, including that 2023 had been a difficult year for the Club, dealing with a cost-of-living crisis, higher than expected inflation, and lower than expected UK campsite occupancy. He acknowledged that all of these factors, including wetter than average weather, had contributed to the year-end results.
The day concluded with a question and answer session involving Nick, Mark, Harvey
and Anthony Davies, Director of Sites and Accommodation. Topics covered Club governance, lobbying the Government and relevant bodies to improve motorway service provision for touring members, and UK campsites. All in all, it was a busy and successful day for everyone involved.
For more information on how the Club works, please see the ‘About Us’ section at camc.com. If you are keen to be a part of shaping the Club’s future, please see the latest advertisement on the Club website or page 13 of the June 2024 issue of the Club magazine.

Headlines Go Weston!
Thousands of members enjoy memorable ClubFest weekend in Shropshire
“This is our first time and we’ve enjoyed it so much we’re going to book next year!” said Lorraine Bailey, who was just about to enter her 14-year-old rescue dog, Molly, in the Fun Dog Show at ClubFest 2024.
If you don’t already know, ClubFest is the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s flagship annual get-together. Held in the grounds of a stately home, it is a unique occasion offering thousands of members the opportunity to meet up, enjoy top-quality entertainment and try out a host of activities.
The dog show was just one of the events taking place in the main arena on the Sunday at beautiful Weston Park in Shropshire. Hundreds of pooches had been entered in categories varying from Best Puppy to ‘My Dog Does Tricks’. One of those celebrating was Mariella Hunter, who had just picked up a rosette for fifth place in the ‘Junior Handler’ class alongside her dog, Doodles. “You should definitely
come – it’s a great family experience,” agreed the entire Hunter family, who live near Ashbourne in the Peak District.
OLD FAVOURITES
Elsewhere in the arena, sea shanty band The Old Time Sailors were warming up for their midday concert. As storm clouds gathered ominously overhead, this fantastically charismatic 20-piece group soon
had hundreds of spectators (perhaps aided by a pint from the on-site bar!) jigging and stomping to an array of centuries-old seafaring and folk classics.
Sure enough the heavens opened but Club members are a hardy bunch – and nothing was going to stop them from enjoying competitive sports including football, netball and lawn darts or mini-golf and Segway driving in the Have a Go/Sports zone.
Coincidentally, around the same time, guests were being invited to learn ‘shelter building’ skills in the Nature Club zone – a popular attraction that also offered classes in the likes of wooden toy carving, fire starting and rope weaving.
Youngsters were able to take shelter from the rain in the Mayday Kids Club – a dedicated marquee where, over the course of the long weekend, they could try arts and crafts, enjoy magic shows, and meet a host of creatures during a special Animal Madness experience. Meanwhile, more adventurous visitors

TOP OF THE POP-UPS
One of the other big attractions at every ClubFest is the traders’ area. Pop-up shops at this year’s event sold everything from caravanning and motorhoming essentials to crafts, dog treats, fold-up bikes and handcrafted spirits.
One trader who was enjoying her second ClubFest in a ‘working capacity’ was Caroline JohnsonFairbank of Natural Wear UK.
She and her partner, Steve – joint Club members since 2000 – were displaying a range of environmentally friendly gifts and clothing, from bamboo socks to belts and ponchos created using recycled plastics.
“There’s a fantastic atmosphere [at ClubFest] and the entertainment is second to none,” said Caroline. “You talk to people and they tell you they’ve ‘entered the dog show’, or they’ve ‘come for the running [race]’, or they’re ‘off to the yoga’. It just seems that there’s something for everybody to enjoy. We love meeting people – that’s a big thing for us even though we’re working.”
Alongside the trade stalls, this year’s ClubFesters were treated to a fantastic choice of food and drink
from the likes of Crazi Jalfrezi (curry and pizzas), Nally’s Jamaican Jerk & Grill and Churros Hut.
For many, of course, the principal attraction of ClubFest is the incredible evening musical entertainment. The headliners on the Elddis Main Stage for 2024 were ELO Experience, Scouting for Girls, Jason Donovan and Toploader – and many agreed this was the best line-up yet. “We had a great dance up the front to Scouting for Girls – it was really good!” said the Hunters. More top acts are planned for next year’s event…
■ … Speaking of which, it has just been announced that ClubFest 2025 will be held at the magnificent Bolesworth Estate near Tattenhall in Cheshire. This wonderful venue, known for its striking castle, gardens, lakes and woodlands, promises to be the ideal setting for the four-day event, which will be held over the late May bank holiday weekend. Prices for a standard EHU pitch for two adults start at £395, but book before 1 October 2024 and you can take advantage of our Early Bird Offer of just £360. That price includes a pitch for four nights and access to all the on-site entertainment and activities – see you there! See camc.com/ clubfest for full details and terms and conditions.

Visitor Levy Bill
MSPs in Scotland have supported legislation giving councils a new power to introduce a visitor levy that can raise funding for local visitor facilities and services. Councils that want to introduce a visitor levy will be able to do so after they have consulted with local communities, businesses and tourism organisations. No levies will come into effect before 2026.
The Club has been actively involved in representing the interests of Club members at every stage of the legislation passing through Holyrood, and will continue to do so as each local Council decides whether it would like to introduce a scheme. The Club’s position has been that campsites should not be included since accommodation is brought with the user and not provided, and it has further proposed that temporary campsites and events, rallies and small businesses such as CLs should be exempt. Whilst it is called a visitor levy, it is a tourism tax that potentially will be payable by all users of overnight accommodation, which includes campsite pitches. We will continue to seek exemptions and reliefs for camping and caravanning as a matter of policy.

The new gallery transports visitors to a bygone era from the 1950s to the 1970s. Shop displays feature items from the museum’s collections, many being exhibited for the first time. Sara Riccabone
The Club was pleased to be able to show Sam Rowlands MS around our newly-refurbished Lady Margaret’s Park Club Campsite in May. Sam, who is also a member of the Club, currently chairs the Welsh Parliament’s Cross Party Group on Tourism and he has been a Member of the Senedd since 2021.
Sam received a warm welcome from Emma McQuillan, Head of Governance at the Club, and was given a tour around the site by Site Managers Simon and Rebecca Allen. Lady Margaret’s Park (near Chirk) reopened in December 2022 following extensive redevelopment and now showcases numerous sustainable initiatives.
Sam said: “I was delighted to visit Lady Margaret’s Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite today in North Wales. Seeing first-hand the innovative developments towards a more sustainable, diverse and inclusive camping experience felt like a positive step forward. I am sure that campsite visitors throughout the year will not only bring a welcome boost to the local visitor economy in Wales (Cymru) but also foster a deeper appreciation for this amazing region.”
It is essential for the Club to showcase our campsites to key political figures, and it is important that we effectively represent the interests of our members to policymakers across the UK’s devolved nations. We are committed to articulating how specific legislative matters impact our members’ interests and concerns.

CLUB SPONSORS EPIC SURFING COMPETITION
The Club was delighted to once again sponsor the Caravan and Motorhome Club English National Surfing Championships in 2024 –marking a decade of support for this prestigious event.
This year’s championships took place across two separate weekends in Cornwall – the first in April at Fistral Beach and the second in May at Watergate Bay, with a rearranged date resulting in better conditions for surfing. Entrants competed in a variety of disciplines across different age groups, using stand-up paddelboards, longboards, shortboards and bodyboards. The surfers displayed incredible strength, skill and agility at both venues and demonstrated that the future is bright in English surfing. Full reports on both of the weekends and more information about the championships can be found at surfingengland.org.
Brian Morgan, Head of Communications and Events for the Caravan and Motorhome Club, said: “It has been an amazing decade partnering with Surfing England and supporting the surfing community. To see the advances that surfing has made over the past 10 years has been incredible. Surfing England is an organisation with vision and drive and it’s a testament to them that surfing is now a recognised Olympic sport.”

Letters
At one with nature
[While staying at Whitwell Farm CL in Devon] I’m writing, whilst sat in a field abundant with buttercups and overlooking the small coastal town of Seaton. In the distance I can see the English Channel with its shades of teal changing hourly.
Our pitch is a desirable distance from the nearest ‘A’ road and the service lane is relatively quiet so, in the main, we only hear the sounds of nature. Predominantly it’s the pleasant and constant chirping of birds. My best guess is that they are mostly blackbirds but we’ve also heard and (in some instances seen) pheasants, great tits, robins, pigeons and cuckoos. There is one bird that, to my constant amusement, sings out for all its worth (what I hear as) “herty gerty”. I’m not sure if it’s being cheeky, but it makes me smile.
for our jumpers when clouds form. Sometimes we seek refuge back in the caravan with all of its modern gadgets. Now into our fourth year we seem (finally) to be in command of all its technicalities and it really is ‘home from home’ for us both.

Earlier and occasionally through the nights, a couple of resident deer have been heard grunting as they shuffle by. We usually see them in the early evening, but they’ve also made appearances at other times when seeking out delicacies offered by the hedgerows.
At times we’ve been spoilt with lashings of sunshine, but the air is still cold, making us reach
It’s been really nice just to relax, aided for the first time by not having brought any work along with me. In fact, I think it’s the first time in many years since I’ve felt I could and have allowed myself to be quite like this. My transition into retirement is slowly gaining traction.
Mark Evans, Devon
Editor’s note: Thanks for your message, Mark – it sounds as though you are having a great time in retirement! We’ve had a chat with our nature expert, David Chapman, who thinks the “herty gerty” singer could be a great tit (pictured above).
We would love to hear about your previous adventures and plans for the future! Please email us at magazine@camc.com.
I’ve written this poem and shared it on the Caravan and Motorhome Club group on Facebook. So I thought you’d like to read and share it in your magazine.

ASTRONAUTS ON TOUR
About 25 years ago, my sister, Viv, bought me a lifesize cut-out of the three actors from my favourite film, Apollo 13. To this day, I’m not sure why she did that, and the feeling of utter confusion when I opened my present will stay with me forever. They stayed in the shed for years, but about 12 years ago, we started keeping ‘the boys’ in the motorhome.
They look out the rear nearside window whilst travelling, then when landing is complete, they decamp to the cockpit! The strange looks and comments we receive when we turn up at various sites are a brilliant conversation starter! The boys are going further afield this year, and looking forward to seeing some of you around the country, with trips planned to Devon, Scotland and Ypres, blasting off in June!

Give the Singers a try
Do you enjoy singing with others? Are you friendly? If you can answer ‘yes’ to these two questions you may like to join The Caravan and Motorhome Club Singers.
I have joined this year and have thoroughly enjoyed learning some new songs in four-part harmony. The repertoire includes show tunes, sea
shanties, lullabies, classical, folk and pop songs – something for everyone. I have been made to feel very welcome as a new member and already feel part of the group. I would recommend giving the Singers a try. Check out camc-singers.co.uk for more information.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
A quick look at your conversations on our Club Together online forum (camc.com/clubtogether) …
We pick up where we left off last month, with answers to RowenaBCAMC’s question: Was it the call of the open road, the freedom to explore new places on your own terms or perhaps a cherished memory from childhood?… What was your initial inspiration for starting this [caravanning and motorhoming] journey?
Decades ago I was involved in car rallies with stages deep in forests at night, and kept adding more facilities and comforts to my Land Rover until it became easier to have a separate unit that I could tow along when needed. Hence the caravan was born! Navigateur
Well, my brother and I were introduced to caravanning aged four and six by mum and dad. We joined the Wiltshire Centre in its inaugural year. What a way to grow up – rallies every weekend from March to November and sometimes Christmas. Freedom, exploration, friends and a lot of fun.
Later on, in my teens, I met my future wife on a rally. Then a short break for marriage, house and then we were inspired to give our kids a similar experience. Many holidays later, they were off to uni and forging their own way. Our daughter now has a caravan and son a tent – they continue to explore with their families. We’re entering the autumn of our touring; now retired, we can enjoy many nights away, still exploring and revisiting some old favourites. viatorem
We started in 1983 with a tent and trailer. This was because, having two boys, holidays were too expensive. We had used my parents’ caravan in the 60s – very basic water in a container outside. Gas lights inside and a cold box kept under the van outside. But had loved it. We didn’t have our own car in those days so they would take us and leave us – mostly to the Forest of Dean.
We bought our first caravan (a Target) when the boys were three and five years old. It was the start of my love affair with caravan holidays. Then we bought a new Swift budget caravan around 1989. This lasted for 13 years. We travelled to France and many UK places with our two boys. We have changed our caravans a few times over the years. I have booked three trips away this year and am still planning as many as I can. The Netherlands rally in Delft has been one of my favourite trips of all time. norab

A RIGHT OLD KNEES-UP
The South Essex Centre ran a Cockney themed rally just after Valentines this year. Entitled ‘Love the Lambeth Walk’, members were provided with pie and mash on the Saturday night, followed by a traditional steamed pudding. The entertainment included many traditional songs to sing and dance to. There was also live entertainment,
provided by a couple of talented centre members. Over the weekend the marshals arranged and supplied fresh sea food, which also went down very well. As you can see from the photo, many also chose to dress up for the occasion, with several very appropriate designs.
This is just an example of what you can do if you join a local centre.
Let’s get talking
As a family of four we love the freedom of motorhome holidays, and have visited many sites across the UK, with our favourite being the Club campsite at Bunree.
We unfortunately had to tell our children last year that I’d tested positive for prostate cancer at only 44 years old. I’m thankfully writing this in remission but have made it my goal to raise awareness and hopefully save more people’s lives so no family has to be without their father. If you have any concerns contact your doctor or Prostate Cancer UK which is an amazing charity offering support and guidance to all those affected by prostate cancer.
Sadly one in eight men in the UK will get prostate cancer and we all can play our part by spreading awareness and talking about it more openly which, unfortunately, we men are not good at.
There is a ‘risk checker’ that takes just 30 seconds to complete at prostatecanceruk.org.
I love the family feel when going on various Club sites and how helpful everyone is – let’s all be helpful and raise awareness to save men’s lives, it’s this simple!
Thank you so much Caravan and Motorhome Club for helping me and more importantly other men!
Dave, Angela, Ryan and Emily, via email
All centres up and down the country run rallies/events for members that are usually very cost effective. You can go all out or enjoy the peace and tranquility of a lovely piece of land locally that you may not have even known existed. Look up your local centre, or see what else South Essex are doing over the remainder of the year at secc-online.org.uk.
Editor’s note: Thanks very much Beverley and David – sounds like a superb event. You can find out what many other centres are up to over the next couple of months – and information on joining your local group – by turning to pages 52-53.
ABOVE AND BEYOND
We set off last week to Garlieston Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite in Dumfries and Galloway. We were towing our caravan and our car got a puncture – the tyre was shredded [and we were] in a remote location. We phoned recovery but had to wait quite some time for assistance. Meanwhile I had phoned the site to let them know what was happening. They got back to see how things were going and Edgar the Site Manager offered to drive his car to our location and tow our caravan to the site – a godsend as it was pouring with rain and the [breakdown] location on the road was quite dangerous.
Edgar and his wife, Judith, were spectacular. He drove 30+ miles to locate us and towed the caravan and myself back to the site. He set the caravan up for me, got the electric running, the water barrel filled and set up the waste. He was soaked to the skin. My husband waited in his car for seven hours! The car was then put on a recovery vehicle and both delivered to the site.
Edgar and Judith were superb hosts to all the visitors on the site –they went above and beyond. Our first visit to the site and it won’t be our last – what a little gem.

Staithes on the Yorkshire coast – a good day trip option from White Water Park Club campsite
Saltburn Cliff Lift and pier

Although I’ve whizzed through on my way to the Lake District or Scotland on several occasions, I’ve never really stopped to explore this part of England ’s north and north-east before. My base for my first three nights is Richmond Hargill House Club Campsite. For me it’s an easy tow – straight up the A1 to Scotch Corner, turn on to the A66 and then it’s just a couple of miles down the road. The site lies near to the lovely stone village of Gilling West and about four miles from Richmond itself.
I’m greeted warmly by site manager Rebecca and her canine friend, Blue. “This is the quietest

area,” advises Rebecca. “We call that the ‘Honeymooners’ Quarter’. Up here is ‘Millionaires’ Row’. It won’t cost you any more, but the views are the best.” Who wants to be a millionaire? I do. So, you can guess which part of the site I opt for.
RICH PICKINGS
Set up, and fortified by a cup of tea and a couple of biscuits, I head off to spend the afternoon in Richmond. Parking in the centre of town ‘up on the cobbles’ is easy (the historic cobbled streets are a much loved feature of Richmond), but do remember to ask site reception for a parking disc to display in your windscreen once you get there. Richmond is a pretty and bustling market town with plenty of shops, cafés and pubs. My first port

of call is the English Heritage-managed castle, just a short stroll from the town centre. Buying my ticket, I enjoy a cheery chat with the receptionist. “It was built in 1079 by William the Conqueror,” she tells me. “Ah,” I reply, “that’d be just after William and my Norman ancestors ‘harried’ you northerners.” “Yes,” she says. Her smile drops. Some wounds still run deep even 950 years on!
I’ll admit I like castles. I’m always interested in the layout, the evolution of the structure and the information offered by the interpretation boards. But whatever your depth of interest, climbing Richmond Castle’s tall stone keep rewards you with magnificent views over the town and surrounding countryside – it’s well worth the visit.
My next trip is to the regimental museum of the Green Howards, conveniently located just off the cobbles. The Howards were formed in the 1680s and this magnificent museum tells the story of the regiment and the individuals who served in it. There are uniforms, weapons, letters, diaries, photos and portraits and a huge medal collection.
While in Richmond, the Little Drummer Boy café, renowned for its fabulous scones, is highly recommended. A plaque tells the
ghostly story of the young boy, whose drumbeats can still be heard if you walk a certain way on a certain night.

Barnard Castle itself is a charming and prosperous town with a high proportion of independent shops and cafés. Perhaps it owes its prosperity in part to cheap parking: only £1 for four hours.
My first visit is to the eponymous Castle. Like Richmond it is managed by English Heritage; also like Richmond, you get fantastic views over the town and surrounds; and, like Richmond again, the interpretation boards are excellent, providing an insight into the range of buildings and economic activities that would once have taken place within the castle walls.
I move on to the must-see Bowes Museum, which lies on the edge of the town. The museum is home to a fantastic collection of ceramics, paintings, fashion items and more besides – its a wondrous repository of wondrous things. Its pièce de résistance is the Silver Swan, a full-scale fish-catching automaton dating from the 1770s. A love story lies behind the creation of the museum and why it was built in the style of a French château. Check it out if you visit.
In the afternoon, I drive into the countryside, heading north-west to Grassholme Reservoir.
It’s usually possible to do a circular walk around the reservoir, but at the time of my visit the route was closed due to works taking place. I chat instead to some anglers who, being much hardier than me, are happy to brave the elements. (Day fishing tickets are available from the Visitor Centre.)
This is also the site of the Grassholme Observatory which, benefiting from dark skies, offers visitors the opportunity to stargaze and

The next morning my destination is Leyburn, about nine miles south of Richmond. Occupying a disused quarry, the Lower Wensleydale Club Campsite is situated just outside Leyburn in the village of Harmby. It’s a great location. Pitches are well spaced out –often in little pods of twos and threes – and separated by trees. Wildlife abounds and it’s a superb place for nature photography. One of the assistant managers has taken stunning pictures of owls, squirrels and other aspects of the site’s fauna and flora.
Close by is a business park which houses two visit-worthy attractions: Ceramic Inspirations pottery and the Inspired Chocolate factory. Both offer the opportunity to watch and learn about their respective manufacturing processes.
ALL ABOARD!
Leyburn is the terminus of the Wensleydale Railway. As I love preserved railways (please have a read of my special themed feature on pages 54-56 of this issue), I make this the focus of my afternoon’s activities.

period stations at Scruton and Leeming Bar. Scruton is preserved as it would have been in 1910 and Leeming Bar as if it were 1925. Both are manned by volunteers in period dress who delight in telling you about the stations’ operations and what life was like in those days. Leeming Bar is particularly interesting as the station incorporates the station master’s house, giving insight into domestic life in the period. I watch with wry amusement as two children appear ‘gob-smacked’ when hearing about outside toilets, darning socks and handpowered washing ‘machines!
After my railway trip, I pop in to see Janet, who runs Brookfields Farm CL, also in Harmby.
With views over open fields to the hills beyond, it’s as beautiful as the nearby Club site. Janet’s horses and donkeys graze in the adjoining paddock. “It’s a lovely place for people to come, enjoy and relax,” says Janet – a view shared by two Club members who add, “It’s a secret gem. Rail enthusiast Philip Moon hits the West Midlands for a weekend exploration of two popular lines
The sight, sound and smell of a steam locomotive is evocative for so many of us. For oldies, like me, there’s nostalgia for our youth when steam was still the dominant form of traction on our railways. For those in their middling years, it may be a fascination with the technology of a bygone age or just an appreciation of the romantic and picturesque. And for kids there’s the connection with the Hogwarts Express or Thomas the Tank Engine and his pals.
We’re fortunate that there are many heritage railways across the country which offer us the opportunity to experience the thrill of steam. They provide a great theme for a caravan/ motorhome break, or can add an extra dimension to a multi-activity holiday.
During previous trips I’ve enjoyed the North Yorkshire Moors Railway while staying at one of the Certificated Locations (CLs) near its Pickering terminal; fitted in a trip on the North Norfolk line while staying at The Sandringham Estate Club Campsite (Seacroft or Incleboro Fields would be alternatives), and taken the Nene Valley Railway from its stop adjacent to Ferry Meadows Club Campsite.
An excellent starting point if you’re planning a break is the UK & Ireland Heritage Railway website (heritage-railways.com). Here you’ll find a map showing the location of all our preserved railways. Click through to access each railway’s website and assess whether it’s one for you.
TWO CHOO-CHOOS
I decided on a weekend break in the West Midlands to take in two of the best: the Severn Valley Railway (SVR) and the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR). The trip also enabled me to visit the wonderful Black Country Living Museum in Dudley. My base was to be Chapel Lane Club Campsite, located in the pretty village of Wythall, south of Birmingham and just off the M42.
The SVR runs from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth, so there are, in fact, several other convenient sites you could consider. There’s an Affiliated Site – Stanmore Hall, near Bridgnorth
– and several CLs along the line, including the picturesque Nash End. This is close to Arley, one of the prettiest stations on the SVR, and offers wonderful views over the surrounding countryside.
If you want to focus on the GWSR, which runs from Broadway in the north of the Cotswolds to Cheltenham, you could base yourself at either Broadway or Cheltenham Racecourse Club campsites. The former is particularly convenient as it is adjacent to the station. It was a steam gala weekend on the SVR at the time of my visit, meaning that there would be lots of locos ‘in steam’ – I was keen to make the most of it. A rover ticket allowed me to travel up and down the line, breaking my journey as I wished. I caught the 11.23 northbound from Kidderminster hauled by Taw Valley, a Southern Railway West Country Pacific locomotive. After passing through Bewdley and crossing Victoria Bridge over the River Severn, I got off at Highley. The footbridge presented a great photo opportunity as a southbound train hauled by Great Western Railway (GWR) tank engine 1369 passed through. Highley is where you’ll find the Engine House: a wonderful display of some of the SVRs out-of-service locos and other rolling stock such as George VI’s railway carriage and a Royal Mail coach. There’s even a reconstruction of the Coopers Arms, the pub where enthusiasts gathered in 1965 and decided to preserve the line. Among the exhibits is Gordon , named after Gordon of Khartoum and built by the War Department in 1943.
Time to move on. I pick up the next train heading for Bridgnorth, pulled by GWR’s 4930 Hagley Hall. Along the way we stop frequently as we encounter many of the SVR’s other locos in steam, including Fenchurch. Built in 1872 for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, it’s one of the oldest locos on the line.
IN THE BLACK
My fascination with steam railways is related to a wider interest in Britain’s social and industrial history, so I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit the renowned Black Country Living Museum during this trip. It provides a
WHERE TO STAY
For either the Severn Valley Railway (SVR) or the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR), consider a pitch at:
CHAPEL LANE CLUB CAMPSITE, WORCESTERSHIRE
Conveniently located near the M6 and M42, this site sits next door to the Transport Museum Wythall (wythall.org.uk) which is open most weekends. Cadbury World is about five miles away, while a 10-minute walk brings you to Becketts Farm Shop.
For the SVR you could stay at:
STANMORE HALL TOURING PARK AFFILIATED SITE, SHROPSHIRE
Set in beautiful grounds, and boasting a two-acre lake, this is the perfect spot to unwind. Open all year, this well-appointed site offers a toilet block, laundry facilities, a playground and play area.

WHERE TO STAY
For the GWSR you could stay at either of the following:
BROADWAY
CLUB CAMPSITE, WORCESTERSHIRE
Set on the edge of the beautiful Cotswold village of the same name, Broadway is perfectly placed near the terminus of the GWSR. There’s loads to discover nearby, including Broadway Tower, Cotswold Falconry Centre and Cotswold Farm Park.
CHELTENHAM RACECOURSE
CLUB CAMPSITE, GLOUCESTERSHIRE
At the southern end of the GSWR line you will find the Cheltenham Racecourse Club Campsite. As its name suggests, this is the ideal spot for those who love a flutter on the horses. It’s also conveniently close to the town of Cheltenham and the city of Gloucester with its magnificent cathedral.
glimpse into the lives of working people through the 19th century, right up to the 1960s, offering plenty of nostalgia.
I started back in the 1850s with an underground tour of a drift mine, learning about mining techniques and the hardships faced by the workers – a hard hat was essential as I kept banging my head on the roof stays in the dark.
Next, I caught a vintage double-decker bus to the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Here there’s a row of shops, including a post office, a newsagent, a butcher and a building society (where I learn that I need a 25% deposit if I want a mortgage and that post-war income tax is levied at 9/- in the pound (45p)). There’s also a fantastic music shop; Elvis and The Everly Brothers are doing well in the charts this week. I chat with Emily, the actor who plays Josie Doyle, who worked here back in the 1960s.
Nearby is the 1960s Lea Road Infant Welfare Centre. I’m offered a mother and baby class, but instead opt for the 1960s pub. Here, again, I find everything very authentic, including the nicotine-stained walls and ceiling. Unfortunately, the prices have been updated. I remember when a pint cost 1/8d (just over 8p). I’m afraid you’ll have to pay a little more nowadays.
Round the corner, I’m into the 1930s, and then down the hill I enter the 1910s and the Edwardian and Victorian eras. Here I meet Harry Gregory of Gregory’s General Store (played by George), who proudly shows off his wares and discusses the vicissitudes of his trade.
There’s so much more – the chapel, the school, the canal barges and the funfair – but I can’t miss the sweet shop where I buy my wife some sherbert lemons.
From left: fair at the Black Country Living Museum; Hagley Hall in full steam on the Severn Valley Railway; Dinmore Manor pulls in at Broadway station

BIG HITTER
The GWSR is surely in the ‘Premier League’ of heritage railways. It’s an ideal length at just over 14 miles and weaves its way through some truly lovely countryside – the Cotswolds to one side and the Malverns to the other. Its stations are beautiful and, where necessary, have been brilliantly reconstructed to give an authentic glimpse into the past.
I start my exploration at Toddington where there are excellent facilities, ample car-parking, a children’s playground, a signal box where you can operate the levers, and the line’s loco shed. (There’s also a miniature railway to provide extra interest for the kids – of all ages.) After a good look around, I board the 11.00 for Broadway. Today it’s pulled by GWR 7820 Dinmore Manor
The line has several other locos that regularly operate, including 7903 Foremarke Hall and Southern Railway’s 35006 Peninsular & Oriental
There’s time at Broadway to look around and examine the loco before the trip back down the line to Cheltenham. Carriages are already being laid out for the afternoon’s cream tea special but, sadly, I’m on a diet. After a short stop, it’s back to Toddington. I’m too late, alas, for one of the guided tours of the loco shed, but I’ve had a great day out. I’ll be back!
We’re lucky in this country to have so many heritage railways. Hats off to those excellent individuals who, back in the 1960s and 70s, got together to save the lines and locos. Hats off too to the hundreds of volunteers who run the railways today and fundraise. As for me, I’ll be taking my van out to visit more heritage railways and living museums very soon. Choo! Choo!

AUSTRALIA’S NORTHERN TERRITORY Discover
Duration/type:
26 days/ independent motorhome tour
Departs: AprilNovember 2025
Price: from £6,849pp (based on two people travelling together; price includes member discount of £100 (see opposite page)*. A single supplement applies for solo travellers.
Price includes: flights, all transfers, two nights hotel stay in Darwin, including breakfast, one night hotel stay in Alice Springs, including breakfast, 19 nights prebooked campsites including electric power, Sounds of Silence dinner at Uluru, Yellow Water Cruise, Katherine Gorge Cruise
Travel from the lush greenery and wetlands of Litchfield and Kakadu national parks to Australia’s mesmerising ‘Red Centre’ on this trip of a lifetime. Once you have picked up your motorhome you are free to travel independently, safe in the knowledge that all your campsites are booked in advance. What’s more, your tour includes a number of extra special experiences, including a ‘Sounds of Silence’ dinner at the sacred site of Uluru (Ayers Rock).
Following your flight to Darwin, the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory, you will enjoy a two-night stay in a centrally-located hotel and have the chance to explore this modern city. But your adventure begins in earnest when you pick up your motorhome and head for Litchfield National Park – a region of idyllic waterfalls, pristine swimming spots and beautiful walking trails.
It’s then on to Kakadu National Park, famed for its vast wetlands and diverse bird populations. Here you could visit the Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) rock art site or Warradjan Aboriginal Culture Centre to gain an insight into the Aboriginal history of the area.
On day 10 you’ll embark on a Yellow Water billabong cruise, which gives you the chance to see a multitude of birds or even spot a crocodile! Your next destination is Katherine, which became an important tourist destination when the Katherine Gorge National Park was created in 1963. Here, you will be treated to a ‘Nit Nit Dreaming’ cruise, during which you can learn about the history and traditions of the indigenous Jawoyn people.
Farther south lies Mataranka Homestead (look out for the resident orphan wallabies) and Daly Waters, where you might have once witnessed bar brawls and shoot-outs in the main street. Happily the only scuffles seen
here today are between the gangs of Happy Jacks (local birds).
INTO THE OUTBACK
You’re in true Outback territory now as you approach Tennant Creek. Make sure you visit Karlu Karlu (the Devil’s Marbles), a scattering of hundreds of granite boulders, some up to 6m tall. You could also learn about Australia’s 1930s gold rush on an underground tour at Battery Hill Mining Centre.
On day 17 you reach Alice Springs, before heading for Kings Canyon, the deepest gorge in Australia’s Red Centre. Here, a path to the rim of the gorge leads to the ‘Lost City’ where the rock has worn away to resemble mysterious ruins.
Perhaps the highlight of this holiday, however, is a trip to Uluru, a huge rock steeped in local folklore. Your ‘Sounds of Silence’ dinner nearby gives you the chance to sample the likes of barramundi, crocodile and kangaroo, before the lanterns are extinguished to reveal a sky packed with stars.
Sadly it is time to return to Alice Springs for a one-night hotel stay before your flight home. Fortunately, your memories of this extraordinary adventure Down Under will live on for a long time.

WESTERN WANDERER
This fantastic holiday begins with a three-night hotel stay in magical Perth, the capital of Western Australia. Here you will have the chance to enjoy uncrowded beaches, the boutique shops and art galleries of King Street or a walk in Kings Park. Included is a Perth City Highlights tour, as well as a visit to nearby Rottnest Island, where you can see quokkas – the friendly resident marsupials.
Having picked up your motorhome you’ll make your way along Australia’s south-west coast, via the towns of Mandurah, Bunbury and Busselton, to Margaret River. You can choose from a range of experiences in this picturesque region – such as visits to the wine estates of Leeuwin and Cape Mentelle, a drive through Bonarup Karri Forest and a trip to the popular surfing spot of Prevelly Park.
Your journey now takes you eastwards to Albany, once a major whaling centre. The industry came to a conclusion in the late 1970s but you can learn about its history at Albany’s Historic Whaling Station – or perhaps indulge in a spot of whale watching yourself. Meanwhile, a drive along the rugged coastline to Torndirrup National Park is recommended, where The Gap
and Natural Bridge provide spectacular photo opportunities.
OCEAN DRIVE
Following the South Coast Highway you then arrive at the town of Esperance, from which you can embark on the 38km tourist loop known as the Great Ocean Drive – get your camera out again to snap views of the beautiful surfing and

You will now head northwards into the Outback towards the famed goldmining town of Kalgoorlie (you could visit an open pit mine or even try your hand at gold panning). You’ll also have the opportunity to visit the remarkable Wave Rock – as the name suggests this natural granite formation has the appearance of a breaking wave frozen in time.
Heading back to the coast, take in Fremantle where you can sample delicious seafood while enjoying a waterfront view, visit a museum or head off on a heritage trail. From here it’s a short drive back to Perth for your flight back to the UK.

Wining and dining
explores the Rhône-Alpes region of eastern France, perfect for culture vultures, wine buffs and foodies
After a chilly winter, we were ready to go exploring again. And what better way to transition into ‘spring’ than with a visit to some invigorating hot springs?
Arriving in the Rhône-Alpes region of south-east France, we started our holiday proper with a night at Le Vaugrais (Club ref: M12) in Artemare. This peaceful campsite, surrounded by sweet-scented forest, sits high in the mountains within driving distance of the flower-lined town of Aix-les-Bains, famed for its hot mineral springs.
Sitting beside Lac du Bourget and known as ‘The Riviera of the Alps’, Aix was a hugely popular destination for travellers in the late 19th century; notables who flocked to ‘take the waters’ here included Queen Victoria, Empress Sisi of Austria and Prince Albert I of Monaco. After a lazy morning wallowing in the springs at Chevalley Thermal Baths we felt royally refreshed ourselves.
Stopping off to pick up a couple of creamy tartes aux pralines at Aux Délices Du
Valromey bakery in Artemare, we set off for our next campsite. Turning off just before Ambérieu-en-Bugey near the picturesque medieval ruins of St Germain’s castle (Vestiges du Château de Saint-Germain), we followed a narrow road hemmed in by waist-high grass to the Blue Lake (Le Lac Bleu). The lake is so-called because of its mesmerising colour, which is caused by copper deposits in the water. Firm believers that the journey matters more than the destination, we were then lured off the road for a second time to explore Ambérieu-enBugey itself, a pretty hamlet which is home to the Musée du Cheminot, a fascinating little museum packed with antique train carriages, old posters and other railway-themed artefacts.
VINE TIMES
Later that afternoon, we reached La Grappe Fleurie campsite. Lying within easy reach of the town of Mâcon, we planned to spend several days here exploring the region. The area is known as Little Tuscany because of its charming honey-stone houses surrounded by

acres of vines. Learning all about the local wines was a priority, so the following day we joined a half-day tour with local company Tasty Lyon. Starting at the Château de Pizay winery, we had great fun exploring the cellars and vineyards of this estate, where they’ve been making wine for more than 1,000 years. After touring several other wineries, we ended the day with a tasting session and snacks.
The following morning we headed to the winery of the Aucoeur family for a traditional ‘mâchon’. Derived from the word ‘mâcher’ (‘to chew’), this hearty local breakfast – comprising various meat dishes ranging from thick pâté rillettes to beef sausage andouillettes, served with copious glasses of Beaujolais (for non-drivers) – originated with the canuts, the silk weavers of 19th century Lyon.
The next day, wanting to work off some calories, we hopped on bikes and had a ride round the pretty local village, Fleurie, before heading for Hameau Duboeuf, only a couple of miles away in Romanèche-Thorins. Europe’s first wine-themed park, this vast magical space, with its 3D cinema, vineyards and fun rides, is well worth a visit.
Back on the bikes we headed to La Roche de Solutré, a striking 500m-high limestone escarpment that towers above the surrounding fields and offers spectacular views over the Mâconnais vineyards and as far away as Mont Blanc when the weather’s good.
Hot and tired after all that cycling, back at La Grappe Fleurie we relaxed all afternoon in the site’s spa pool before splashing out on dinner at George Blanc’s L’Ancienne Auberge 1900, which is housed in an old lemonade factory in Vonnas. From aromatic trout swimming in a rich Chardonnay sauce to wild mushroom-stuffed cabbage, this retro-styled,
Aix-les-Bains on Lac du Bourget
Michelin-starred bistro provides the most wonderful dining experience.
With a brisk wind blowing clouds across a beautiful blue sky, the following morning we made our way south to our final site. En route we made a detour to visit Villefranche-surSaône, capital of the Beaujolais region and one of France’s Villes d’Art et d’Histoire – towns that are noted for their historical and cultural sites. At the tourist office we picked up an excellent audio guide and strolled around admiring the architecture before visiting the Musée des Conscrits, an enthralling museum packed with artefacts tracing the history of military conscription in France.
LYON’S MAIN
SIGHTS
Late that afternoon we parked up on a shaded pitch at Camping de Lyon, ordered our morning croissants from reception – where we discovered we could also buy tickets for popular attractions in the city – and sat outside with a glass of Beaujolais enjoying the balmy evening air.
Over the following days we explored the wonderful city of Lyon from top to toe. Packed with Roman ruins and medieval and

Renaissance architecture, it was a feast for the eyes – as well as the stomach. Taking a bus from the campsite each morning, we browsed chic boutiques in the Cordeliers area; enjoyed a café crème in the vast Place Bellecour; got lost in the maze of passageways and courtyards known as ‘traboules’; boarded the funicular to the original Gallo-Roman city, and wandered through Lyon’s two open-air Roman arenas.
On our last day, we returned to the Presqu’île, the heart of Old Lyon, which lies on a spit of land stretched between the Rhône and Saône rivers. Strolling past the neoclassical buildings lining the Place des Terreaux, we made a beeline for the Café du Jura, one of the city’s famous ‘bouchons’

Jonathan Manning discovers rich wildlife and fascinating history on an off-road adventure in Northumberland National Park
or an electrifying few seconds, it feels as if we have a grandstand seat in a nature documentary.
A herd of red deer is running uphill, almost within touching distance of our go-anywhere vehicle, a doorless Can-Am Traxter. At first it seems as though the skittish animals have decided to make a break for it, until we come to a stop and the herd gathers around. It turns out the animals have been chasing us, aware that the off-roader has a sack of feed on its back.
Survival is tough in these wild hills of Northumberland, so any easy calories are gladly gobbled. Interestingly, during a three-hour safari
of this rugged landscape, the deer are one of the few creatures to be fenced in. The rest have chosen to call this remote terrain home, including humans, who have eked an existence on these rough slopes since the Bronze Age.
The Wilson family is a more recent arrival, farming 1,700 acres in the Ingram Valley since 1949. Geographically, we’re just four miles from the Club’s River Breamish site (Brandon Ford Certificated Location is even closer). Historically, we could dig into five millennia of human settlements in these hills. Ingram Valley Farm is Historic England’s largest scheduled ancient monument, receiving protected status for its remains of prehistoric to post-medieval settlements, which have been largely

undisturbed. If the buzzards wheeling in the sky above had an interest in archaeology, they could soar over the remnants of 40 ancient settlements, ranging from unenclosed hut circles to six palisaded hillforts, and more than 200 prehistoric cairns – stacks of stones made by humans).
At one of these piles of stone, our guide and driver, Patrick Norris, points out a capstone that covered the grave of an infant, whose cremated ashes were carefully consigned to a pottery urn 4,000 years ago. Archaeologists unearthed four perfectly preserved urns here, and the jars are now on display at the visitor centre café in the tiny village of Ingram. The grave is a moving reminder that parental grief must have been as acute then as it is today, given the enormous effort required to
build the funeral cairn. “We might assume these were uncivilised savages, but they could not have survived in this landscape without peace, cooperation and hard work,” says Patrick. Lines of terracing across the steep hillside offer further evidence of this cooperative approach to life, proof of sophisticated farming techniques used to grow crops, most likely barley. The north-facing slope is also an indication that the Northumberland climate was warmer in the Bronze Age than the present day. The back of our buggy is loaded with waterproof robes in case the mercury drops, and Patrick isn’t joking when he says sometimes the wind blows so hard that rain passes horizontally through the vehicle, in one side and straight out the other.

Far-reaching views
We could dig into five millennia of human settlements in these hills
What the Can-Am lacks in doors it more than makes up for in traction, bounding up hills, through bog and over rocks with ease. Its straightforward seating arrangement and exceptional off-road ability make the tour hugely accessible, and Patrick takes pride in the fact that the age range of safari-goers stretches from seven months to 97 years. Wheelchair users and neurodiverse tourists have all been whisked across these hills in exhilarating fashion.
But it’s the stops rather than the high-octane surges that provide the real thrills, with Patrick proving to be a hugely engaging guide. Whether he’s talking about rare lichens, iridescent beetles or the perfect U-shape of a glacial meltwater valley from the end of the Ice Age, no question is too obscure or daft to receive a cheery answer.
ONWARDS AND UPWARDS
Our expedition starts in a grazing pasture where cows eye us cautiously as their calves frolic. Fortunately the mighty Aberdeen Angus bulls, with gladiatorial names like El Nino and Explosion, are penned in the farmyard.
As we reach higher ground, pasture grazed by sheep and their spotlessly white lambs, gives way to tussocky moorland. Patrick cites a potential ‘Big 5’ list of species to spot, and we
soon see hares scatter through the landscape, hear skylarks and curlew singing their hearts out, and watch a lapwing perform an acrobatic display. All are eclipsed by a short-eared owl, whose mottled feathers and pale underwing blend flawlessly with the smudges of moorland colour. A hen harrier, one of Britain’s rarest birds of prey, was hunting these skies just 48 hours earlier, says Patrick.
Rewind a few thousand years and bears and wolves lived here, too, although it was more likely marauding tribes that led to the construction of the hillfort at Brough Law. The settlement has a diameter of about 60m and stone rubble suggests its walls were 3.5m−5m wide, likely topped with wooden barricades. It must have been an impressive statement of power, organisation and control, with the added bonus of spellbinding views across the River Breamish to the brooding Cheviot Hills in the north.
The highest point of the farm and safari is Cochrane Pike, 1,100ft above sea level, from where we glimpse the Simonside Hills to the south, the sea to the east and The Cheviot, the highest point in Northumberland National Park, to the north. It’s a fabulous vantage point from which to admire the moorland, pine plantations and summer grasses, lifted by pockets of delicate wood anemone, indicators of the forest that once stood tall before Bronze Age axes started to clear the land.
The red deer are the final stop, a handsome connection between the farm and the wild, with the names of the stags, like the safari itself, reflecting the past and the present: Cuthbert and Garry.

SONIS
Protect your caravan, motorhome, campervan or home with the NoEntry system by Sonis Alarm
– which the manufacturer claims is the world’s first alarm that does not require motion, window or door sensors.
Using acoustic technology for detection, in the event of an attempted break-in, the NoEntry unit sends a notification to the property owner through a smartphone app, which Sonis states will activate before an intruder gains entry. And because internal motion sensors are not used, the alarm system will not be triggered by pets moving around indoors. The system will typically (depending on conditions) run for three months when connected to a 5V USB port on a 100Ah 12V caravan leisure battery system. The alarm unit also has a backup battery, which will run for around 20 hours.
The system can be self-installed in minutes and operated easily using the app or a keyfob. What’s more, a single unit protects all doors, windows and even conservatories and integral garages.
Members of the Club save 15% on NoEntry by Sonis Alarm. Visit camc.com/sonis for more information.

e don’t need to go out of our way to see many butterflies in the UK: species such as the red admiral, small tortoiseshell and peacock commonly visit our gardens to drink nectar from our flowers. However, to see some rarer examples we must venture to specific locations. Here I have picked out five campsites on the Club’s network from which it is possible to walk to some of the UK’s best butterfly-spotting locations.
GODREVY PARK CLUB
CAMPSITE, CORNWALL
Spotting location: Upton Towans (Cornwall Wildlife Trust nature reserve)
Butterfly: silver-studded blue
Directions: Take the footpath from the back of the site, cross the road and then turn left into the dunes. Head for the very tall chimney and follow the path towards the sea. Only 100 yards from the chimney is one of the best areas of the dunes for silver-studded blues. The total walking distance is about two miles. What to look for: The silver-studded blue is uncommon in Britain, found mostly in the south at scattered locations on heathland and duneland,

MYSTERY PHOTO
Every month I will show you a photo of something from the natural world. It might be a close-up, or a subject that is difficult to identify. All you have to do is figure out what it is! Here is this month’s photo; no clues or prizes – it’s just for fun. I will give you the answer next month – but if you can’t wait, log in to the Digital Magazine app.
The subject of June’s mystery photo was: a puffin
but in late June and early July this pretty little butterfly is frequently seen on the dunes at Upton Towans. Visit on a sunny day and see them flitting between privet bushes, where they drink nectar and shelter from the wind. Also look for common blue, brown argus and dark green fritillary butterflies here, as well as the six-spot burnet moth, which is active during the day.
WINCHESTER MORN HILL CLUB CAMPSITE, HAMPSHIRE
Spotting location: Magdalen Hill Down (Butterfly Conservation nature reserve).
Butterfly: 34 butterfly species have been recorded at Magdalen Hill Down, so it’s difficult to pick just one – but July is the peak season for chalkhill blues, and this is a great place to see them.
Directions: It is less than a mile from the site to the reserve: follow the B3404 towards Winchester and take the track to the left immediately after the cemetery.
What to look for: This is a chalk escarpment which is home to a wonderful mix of wildflowers, including knapweed, marjoram, agrimony, horseshoe vetch, sainfoin, field scabious, bird’sfoot trefoil, rock-rose, clustered bellflower and burnt orchid. Later in the summer, autumn lady’s tresses and autumn gentian are found here.
Regular visitors in July include brimstone, brown argus, chalkhill blue, common blue, small blue, marbled white, small heath, small skipper and Essex skipper. Other special butterflies seen here through the year include Adonis blue, Duke of Burgundy, grizzled skipper and dingy skipper, and green hairstreak, to name but a few.
CIRENCESTER PARK CLUB CAMPSITE, GLOUCESTERSHIRE
Spotting location: Daneway Banks, Sapperton (Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust nature reserve)
Butterfly: large blue
Directions: It is a ten-mile round walk from the Club site to Daneway Banks, via the Bathurst Estate. Alternatively, drive and park in Sapperton.
What to look for: This is limestone grassland with a rich flora offering, including rock-rose, wild thyme, cowslips and orchids. It is a very welcoming environment for butterflies, with dingy skipper, small blue, dark green fritillary and marbled white just some of the less common species seen here. But the most exciting inhabitant is the large blue, seen on the wing in June and July. This is a very special butterfly because it became extinct in Britain in the 1970s and was reintroduced from Sweden.
NORFOLK BROADS CLUB CAMPSITE, NORFOLK
Spotting location: The Broads including How Hill National Nature Reserve (How Hill Trust) and Hickling Broad (Norfolk Wildlife Trust).
Butterfly: swallowtail
Directions: From the Club site there is a lovely walk of about one mile to How Hill. If you fail to see swallowtails there, try Hickling Broad, which is about six miles from the site (probably easiest by car or on a bicycle – it’s quite flat round the Broads!).
What to look for: The swallowtail is Britain’s biggest and arguably most impressive butterfly. It is only found around the Norfolk Broads and is on the wing from late May through to early July. So unless you can act quickly, I would suggest making a date in your diary for next year, early June being the best time to look for them. Swallowtails can be found on nectar-rich flowers, so check out garden borders as well as keeping an eye out for a large, powerful butterfly flying over the reedbeds.
LUCKSALL AFFILIATED SITE, HEREFORDSHIRE
Spotting location: Haugh Wood
Butterfly: wood white
Directions: It’s about two miles along footpaths from the site to Haugh Wood. The wood white is best sought in June and again in August, but many other species can be seen here in July.
What to look for: The 350 hectares of mixed woodland here are regarded as nationally important for moths and butterflies. From the main car park there are two self-guided butterfly trails (1.5 and 2 miles long). The most impressive butterflies in June and July include wood white, silver-washed fritillary, white-letter hairstreak and white admiral. Earlier in the summer pearl-bordered fritillaries can be seen.

TOWING TITAN
James Batchelor finds much to admire in the latest iteration of Volkswagen’s trusty SUV
It’s hard to believe, but Volkswagen has been building its Touareg SUV for over 20 years. Over those two decades, it has gone from being the German brand’s only high-riding off-roader to sitting atop a whole range of them. In 2024 the Touareg is still the largest, the most expensive and the plushest SUV Volkswagen builds, and it has proven to be a favourite among caravan owners. In fact, this generation of Touareg has won a couple of class awards in recent Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year competitions, so when we learned that Volkswagen had given the car a styling and tech overhaul, we were keen to get behind the wheel.
COMFORT
It’s no secret the Volkswagen Touareg has some very distinguished sisters. When it first launched its only other family relation was the Porsche
Cayenne, but over the past two decades it has acquired siblings from Audi, Bentley and Lamborghini and it uses the same platform and some of the same tech as those cars.
For 2024, Volkswagen has turned up the style a notch with a glitzy makeover. This generation of Touareg, launched in 2018, saw the arrival of brasher styling compared to earlier models; for this update there are some more modern touches, without losing the visual impact. There’s a wider grille, new front and rear bumpers, and a very on-trend light bar that stretches across the grille; another, across the tailgate, joins together new rear light clusters. Even the VW badge on the tailgate is backlit.
All Touaregs, regardless of trim, now get Volkswagen’s ‘Innovation Cockpit’, which consists of a 12in digital instrument panel and a positively massive 15in touchscreen for the infotainment. It runs the manufacturer’s latest system and is much faster and easier to use than before, but

The interior design is smart and the quality is good
due to the screen’s large size it does take some getting used to. Once you’re familiar, it’s a doddle.
It’s a shame that the same can’t be said about the heating and ventilation controls, which also have to be operated through the screen – tweaking the climate control while driving can be tricky, although using the much-improved voice command system can help.
The interior design is smart and the quality is good – Volkswagen has even added some extra bits of padding around the centre console. The Touareg also gets a newer steering wheel with touch sensitive buttons; it looks neat but is tricky to operate – indeed Volkswagen has resorted to traditional buttons for the forthcoming Golf Mk8.5 and latest Tiguan SUV.
Unlike its Audi Q7 sister, the Touareg has always been a strict five-seater. As a result of the car’s generous size, there is plenty of room for backseat passengers to stretch out. Kneeroom is very good, even with a couple of six-footers up front, and even though our car had a panoramic glass roof, there was loads of headroom. The back seats can also slide forwards and backwards to free up more space in the boot or promote rear legroom, and the seat backs can recline. Boot room is huge at 810 litres and when you fold down the 40/20/40-split folding rear seats that grows to an enormous 1,800 litres.
This being a Volkswagen there’s a huge options list from which to choose. From roof boxes to night vision, the Touareg can be specified just how you want it to be. There’s only one tow hook available – an electronically folding one which also comes with Trailer Assist, the latter allowing the driver to reverse the car once hooked up by
using the electric mirror switch instead of shuffling the steering wheel.
A number of on-screen graphics and camera angles also assist the driver. It works surprisingly well and is a rather neat facility.
Other clever optional features include ‘Park Assist Plus’, which allows you to park the car in a space by controlling it from your smartphone while standing outside.
DRIVING
Volkswagen has kept a range of large capacity units for its Touareg. There’s a wide choice available, from the bread-and-butter 3.0-litre V6 diesels with 228bhp or 282bhp, right up to a pair of plug-in hybrids which include a high performance ‘R’ variant with 455bhp and an electric driving range of 30 miles.
We’re testing the other engine in the range – the 3.0-litre V6 petrol. Surprisingly it doesn’t have electrical assistance to make it cleaner and more frugal – it’s just an old-fashioned, large petrol engine with six cylinders.
While diesel would be the natural choice for towing, the petrol is noticeably smoother and more refined than the DERV units. It has a delicious creamy power delivery throughout the rev range, and a lovely sporty character. It isn’t as inefficient as you might think – while Volkswagen claims a combined fuel consumption of 25.6mpg, I routinely saw 30mpg on long-distance drives.
The Touareg handles and steers neatly for such a large car. All cars bar the entry-level plug-in hybrid get air suspension, which does a lovely job
Top to bottom: the Touareg handles neatly for a large car; boot space is impressive; stylish cockpit; classy new rear light clusters; a plethora of driving options

The Touareg is a titan among towcars
at gliding over potholes, while our car’s optional four-wheel steering gives a sense of agility on twisty roads, and aids turning in tight parking spaces.
The eight-speed gearbox can be a little hesitant at times but it’s mostly fine and, while it looks a very road-biased SUV, the Touareg is seriously impressive off-road with a high ground clearance (with the suspension in its highest setting), as well as strong traction.
TOWING
Bearing in mind the collection of awards the Touareg has received in the past, it will come as little surprise to learn it’s a titan among towcars.
The best thing about the Touareg is that it has gutsy performance while at the same time providing a very stable towing experience – it’s not one or the other. We tested the Touareg during a particularly squally storm, and despite there being some pretty strong crosswinds, it just got on with the job. Aside from the odd tug on more undulating roads, you really wouldn’t know you were towing. The option to tweak the air suspension to give a more
cushioned or stiffened ride was welcome during our tow test, too, and the four-wheel steering really helped during low speed manoeuvring. With just under 340bhp, unsurprisingly the V6 pulls very strongly and gave a super-refined and quiet driving experience. Just be prepared for ow fuel consumption. During our test we returned 18mpg and the car was not fully loaded with passengers or belongings.
VERDICT
The Touareg is one of the finest large SUVs for towing on the market. It has gutsy performance, provides a smooth ride and it takes charge of a large caravan with ease. We’d recommend taking test drives with different engines as they all have their own individual strengths.

2015 Sterling Continental 480 £15,995
The Continental was as high up the Sterling hierarchy as you could go, lavished with every luxury going: Alde, ATC, illuminated cocktail cabinet, panoramic sunroof, solar panel, dimmable lighting, Omnivent... It was a heck of a list – and everything is present and correct on this impressive example.
The interior is certainly distinctive, with glossy, dark-oak-effect inlays in the white overhead lockers complementing the predominantly
brown soft furnishings, and all the materials look and feel wonderfully substantial. The velour-like sofas in this two-berth 480 are unmarked, and provide plenty of support. The shorter of the two is 5ft 10in long and
the other is 6ft 2in, which will suit most couples. The appliances are reassuringly clean, and it’s hard to tell if the shower has ever actually been used.
Most of us will have been in a pub or restaurant where the music gets piped into the restrooms, and you get that here – the built-in stereo has four speakers, two of which are in the washroom. Oh, the luxury of being able to shave and listen to The Archers at the same time!

And although that asking price looks a bit chunky at first glance, it’s actually pretty much the going rate for second-hand Pastiches of this vintage, which hold their value really well in the current market. This one would have cost £21,745 when new in 2016 – a difference of just £3,750.
The Pastiche was Coachman’s mid-range offering, although there is certainly nothing ‘mid-range’ about the spec sheet, which includes the highly sought-after Alde central heating and Al-Ko ATC as standard. Other goodies include a

In among the serried ranks of the familiar mainstream British products, this fine specimen immediately stands out – it’s not every day you chance upon a secondhand Hymer Nova on a forecourt.
And, honestly, what a beauty.
What really distinguishes Hymers is their super-tough construction. Everything looks and feels hefty, which is borne out by the weight –this one is not far short of a tonne and a half before you’ve even started loading it up.
very good Pioneer stereo, exterior mains and barbecue sockets and a dual-fuel hob.
Everything on board this example is pristine, from the spotless kitchen appliances and shower cubicle, to the plump upholstery and mattress on the sumptuous island bed, which can be slid back into day mode to provide easier access to the lovely end washroom.
It’s not just the condition of the fixtures and fittings that give this Coachman its as-new look – the restrained décor looks very current too.
Such is the near-ubiquity of motorised movers on used caravans these days that it was a mild surprise not to find one here. Regardless, this is a caravan you’d feel very proud to own.
VERDICT
Looks and feels like a new caravan. The buyer should be set for years of luxury touring.
Inside, it’s pure quality. The dark wood of the furniture conveys an ambience you might expect to find in the cabin of an upmarket sailing boat; the corner shower/loo compartment is especially beautiful. Everywhere you look, your gaze is met by beefy, almost over-engineered fixtures and fittings that ooze longevity; and there’s that reassuring slight stiffness on opening all the hatches and lockers that you usually get when everything is still new.
The wraparound seating remains comfortably supportive, and it’s
served by a table whose leg (predictably enough) looks like it could reinforce a small building if it had to.
There’s lots of nice equipment here, including an extractor fan built into the underside of the overhead lockers in the attractively sculpted kitchen, a stereo, an internal fresh water tank, a gas barbecue point and a swivelling wall bracket that gives you the wherewithal to watch telly either from the lounge or from the permanent double bed at the back.
The flooring is of excellent quality, and there are loose-lay carpet
sections (stowed under the bed), which are also in perfect nick.
The previous owner has fitted a motorised mover, which is reassuring given this model’s heft.
The cooking facilities are relatively pared-back: a three-burner gas hob is supported by a small combined oven and grill, all of which are good and clean, if showing some signs of use.
VERDICT
What a joy to behold. Tremendous in every respect.

NARROW WINNER
Nick Harding tries Bailey’s new slimline Alora 69-4S for size
Motorhome width is particularly important to some owners, given how it affects ease of driving. Consequently, a number of manufacturers now offer narrower, nimbler models, including Bailey with its new Alora series. These low-profile coachbuilts come in at 6.99m long and with a maximum body width of 2.12m – up to 20cm narrower than similar vehicles. Like their Bailey stablemates, the three Aloras are all based on Ford’s very capable Transit. All have a driving licencefriendly maximum weight of 3,500kg and, in the case of the 69-4S here, there’s a decent 550kg of payload.
BUILD QUALITY
Constructed using Bailey’s Alu-Tech system, the outer and inner walls of the coachbuilt bodywork are GRP, held together by an interlocking framework with fixing brackets, with polystyrene insulation.
The garage at the back is accessible from either side. As well as space for anything up to a couple of bikes, there are also floor-mounted lashing points, some open shelving and a drawer, plus a hatch to access the water pump and dump valve, and a dedicated locker for a single 6kg gas cylinder.
Note that the lounge table and support boards for the second double bed stow here – not necessarily the ideal location if you’ve a lot of other gear. Along with a gas cylinder, they account for a somewhat limiting 80kg payload capacity in the garage.
DRIVING
There’s just the one engine offering – it’s the 128bhp unit from Ford. Automatic transmission for an extra £2,000 might be tempting, although it does steal some 50kg of payload.
This lower-powered unit isn’t quite the free spirit of the torque-ier 155bhp variant: there was a fair amount of gear-changing involved in our driving through the (often narrow) roads of Somerset and Devon. Luckily, that gear lever is close to hand and slick in operation.
The Ford cab impresses with its features and style. The 12in central infotainment system screen is key – along with DAB radio, there’s Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity as well as Ford’s own reversing camera.
The Ford cab seats offer a great range of adjustment and support. By comparison, the Aguti seats that fold out from each settee base are somewhat basic, lacking armrests and needing additional cushioning. Unfortunately, the Alora’s small, high-set windows don’t allow any views out the sides for all but the very tallest passengers – or indeed the driver at angled junctions.
DAYTIME
Credit to Bailey’s designers because, once you’re parked up on site, you feel like you’re sitting in a ‘normal’-width motorhome. There’s a typicalenough front lounge with inward-facing settees of different lengths. The cab seats are easy enough to swivel around, making them ideal for watching

TV– however, somewhat annoyingly, these don’t sit at the same height as the settees.
As in the cab, the lounge’s side windows are very small, which is an issue if you like to have a view with your morning coffee, and also no help for rear passengers wanting to see where they’re going.
It’s worth noting, too, that there are quite a few steps to negotiate in this vehicle: down from the cab to the living quarters; up to the kitchen/washroom zone; and then on up to the rear bed.
Heating and hot water is from the diesel and electric Truma Combi system, with iNet connectivity.
A special note on the washroom arrangement – the fitting of the tambour door helps free up extra corridor space when needed, which is a nice touch.
NIGHT-TIME
Permanent beds across the back haven’t always been popular here in the UK, but the Alora might change a few minds. Here, access is particularly easy, thanks to a rather clever fold-down double step, and, with the only upper-level lockers along the back wall, there is enough height to sit up in bed.
The whole 1.89m (6ft 2in) x 1.49m (4ft 11in) base hinges up to reveal a decent-size storage area (ideal for clothing), but the floor-level wardrobe here is very shallow. The only other issue was that there was a bit of noise from the fridge – right where our heads were. Light sleepers, take note.
There’s a bit of setting up to do with the double bed in the lounge which, at its maximum, measures 1.96m (6ft 5in) x 1.34m (4ft 5in).
KITCHEN
The kitchen is compact and effective. The Thetford Triplex cooker – featuring a dual-fuel hob with three gas rings and one electric hotplate, plus combined oven and grill – is a real space-saver. To its left is a stainless steel circular sink with a loose cover that doubles as a chopping board. The worktop extension across the habitation doorway is small, but will undoubtedly prove useful. Storage includes a large overhead locker that is divided and part-shelved. A microwave can be stationed here, should you want that particular option. The single drawer under the sink contains a loose cutlery tray.
WASHROOM
The washroom contains the usual complement of shower and swivel-bowl toilet plus a handbasin on a sliding section that moves out of the way so you can optimise washing space.
The drop-down hanging rail is ideal for wet clothing, etc. There’s just a clip for the shower (rather than a riser bar), while the shower itself is the

extended tap with trigger operation, while a curtain protects the main fittings. A retainer clip for the aforementioned tambour door to prevent it moving in transit would be a welcome addition. It’s always good to see a second plughole in the shower tray, while the four hooks are very handy.
DETAILS
There is much to impress in terms of detail, including 16in alloy wheels, an 80W solar panel, opening overcab sunroof, automatic day-running headlights, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, remote central locking that extends to all doors and switched reading lights (in the bedroom and over the cab seats) with USB portals.
Being more critical, such an over-reliance on open shelving is not great in a touring vehicle, and some of the lower locking shelving, in particular, lacks any kind of lipped edging – meaning objects might tumble out when you open a door after a drive.
Despite those small lounge windows, the interior is light, and night-time lighting is bright (the white ceiling helps).
VERDICT
The vehicle for this test was the prototype, so some anomalies will hopefully be resolved in production models. These days, a starting price in the mid-£70,000s counts as ‘budget’ for a motorhome and, in that respect, the Alora offers decent value for money.
You can insure this motorhome with the Club for £411.42 per year*. Please see camc.com/insurance or call 0345 504 0334 for further details.

SERVICED WITH A SMILE
Sammy Faircloth offers her expert guidance on preparing for a stay
on a serviced pitch
The term ‘serviced pitch’ refers to a campsite pitch that offers facilities above the norm – ie it is often on an all-weather surface and usually has its own electric hook-up point, fresh water tap and grey waste (water that has been used for washing up/showering etc) disposal point. Some serviced pitches may offer additional amenities such as TV aerial points and facilities for emptying toilet cassette waste (black waste). These services vary between campsites, so it’s advisable to check before you travel, and contact site staff for clarification. Serviced pitches tend to be more expensive than standard ones, but this is balanced out by the convenience they offer. In order to get the most out of a serviced pitch, though, it is important to carry the correct equipment. All that is usually required is a trip to a hardware store – I now have a kit bag specifically for serviced pitches; here, I talk you through what you might want to keep in yours.
FRESH WATER
Fresh water will often be supplied to a serviced pitch via a standard brass tap with a threaded end. To ensure a secure seal and leak-free
water flow from the pitch tap, you can purchase a brass/plastic connector and some plumber’s tape (also known as PTFE tape). Note: please ensure that tape is removed completely from the tap on departure, otherwise water hygiene could be compromised.
If your caravan has an onboard water tank you could consider investing in the Whale Watermaster mains water hook-up kit, which consists of a 7.5m hose with a tap connector on one end and a Whale plug on the other, which will fit seamlessly into the Whale or Truma sockets found on the side of your vehicle.
The Universal Mains Water Adaptor Kit will keep your water container topped up
A serviced pitch is usually more expensive – but a lot more convenient
If you have an external water container another option is a Universal Mains Water Adaptor Kit. This includes a ball valve that fits into the side of your water container. Connected to this valve is a food-grade reinforced hose, which in turn connects to the tap. As water flows, the ball valve regulates the filling process, ensuring the container fills to about halfway and doesn’t overflow, much like the mechanism found in a toilet cistern. The water pump is connected to the fresh water container in the usual way. The majority of motorhomes feature on-board fresh water tanks, which can be easily filled using a hose connected to an external filling point. On a Bailey model, for example, there are three ways of filling the tank. Firstly, you can simply connect a hose from the tap and insert the other end into the on-board tank, although this method can be a bit messy. Secondly, the Whale Watermaster mains water hook-up kit –similar to that used in caravans – allows tank filling from up to 7.5m away from the tap. Once the tank reaches capacity, the control panel alarm will sound and the hose can be disconnected. Finally, you can use a submersible pump, which sits inside your Aquaroll, and connects to the Watermaster

socket on the motorhome. The pump will automatically fill the on-board fresh water tank with water and switch off once the tank is full. If you don’t have a submersible pump, you can use the Whale Portable Pump kit (this requires a 12V connection) in conjunction with an Aquaroll to transport water to the vehicle.
WASTE WATER
Flexible pipes are a convenient and spacesaving solution when it comes to managing waste water (members can save 10% on the usual Prima Leisure price of Colapz pipes via shop.camc.com ). Alternatively, assembling varying lengths of rigid pipes and connectors can be a fun challenge – something our son particularly enjoys. It’s crucial to ensure proper drainage by maintaining a reasonable slope from the vehicle to the waste disposal point. You can buy straps that hold the pipes
Universal Mains Water Adaptor

occurs on continental campsites and can pose a safety hazard. The mains tester will identify this, and until the issue is resolved it’s advisable to refrain from using the mains supply.
in place from a company such as Caravan Bright Ideas (caravanbrightideas.co.uk ).
EUROPEAN REQUIREMENTS
While much of the equipment I have outlined above is suitable for use abroad, it’s wise to take some additional items as a precaution. For instance, the electricity bollards on some campsites in France and Germany may require a two-pin connector rather than the three-pin connector found on our electrical hook-up cables, so it’s advisable to purchase an adaptor before you travel.
Additionally, pack a mains tester to check for ‘reverse polarity’ (ie the reversal of neutral and live cables), which sometimes
During a Spanish holiday, we encountered a serviced pitch bollard that supplied water but didn’t feature an actual tap – we had to rent a water connector from the site shop.
FINAL THOUGHTS …
In summary, serviced pitches offer extra convenience, particularly during extended stays. A little preparation before you travel ensures that you can fully maximise the benefits of your serviced pitch.

HOW TO PLAY
This puzzle has no clues in the conventional sense. Instead, every number printed in the main grid represents a different letter (with the same number always representing the same letter, of course). For example, if 8 turns out to be a V, you can write in V wherever a square contains 8.

CATTLE BATTLE
Mai Moulton found a clear route blocked while walking along the Wales Coast Path on Anglesey. They do seem intrigued by the two-legged visitors to their field. “These guys need to moooooooove over‚” jokes Mai.
Winging it
Alyson Veryard shared several interesting pictures of insects with us, but this cheeky dragonfly caught our eye – a poolside pilferer hunting for refreshment on the island of Grenada in the Caribbean.
A LITTLE SHEEPISH
Club member Frederick Johnson was stumped – initially, at least – during a leisurely walk from Lady Margaret’s Park Club Campsite to the nearby Chirk Castle grounds. “As we were walking up the driveway to the castle,” Frederick says, “we heard a sheep bleating but at first couldn’t see the sheep. Then my wife said, ‘It’s coming from the tree’. On closer inspection, we found the source of the bleating taking sanctuary inside the base of an old oak tree. It gave us quite a chuckle to see her all snug in her hiding place.”

Hit the heights
Jonathan Manning explores the fringes of Northumberland National Park on this testing ride through a stunning landscape
The Northumberland hills combine a magical sense of remoteness without ever leaving civilisation far behind. This rolling route through fields and moorland from River
Breamish Club Campsite passes blink-andyou’ll-miss-them hamlets of rugged stone houses, comforting reminders that this is not a lost world, even if there’s no one about.
As the altitude rises, grazing pastures give way to heather and gorse, while streams and burns sparkle or surge depending on recent rainfall. Skirting the perimeter of Northumberland National Park, the route highlights how boundaries are manmade rather than natural. The landscape is every bit as beautiful as inside the park.
These spectacular views are hard won, though, through a series of thigh-burning climbs. At the highest points there are panoramas across to the Cheviots in the north and the Simonside Hills to the south. No wonder the area is peppered with ancient hillforts.
With precious little traffic, these are some of the quietest roads to ride in the country, the peace broken only by the bleat of lambs and call of curlews. Acrobatic lapwings wheel and dive over wetter ground, while the occasional buzzard drifts by. If luck is on your side, you may even spot red squirrels, native to the area.
In spring, crops of retina-challenging rape perform a dazzling impression of the Tour de France’s fields of sunflowers, and in late summer a purple tide will sweep across the heather on higher ground. Rest assured, at any time of year this is a sublime ride.

Mark Sutcliffe visits a 13th century castle and an iconic aqueduct on this picturesque walk from Lady Margaret’s Park Club Campsite
Heaven on Earth
Mark Sutcliffe is a former editor of Country Walking magazine and a regular contributor to the Club Magazine. Mark has walked thousands of miles across Britain and Europe and is currently working on his second walking guidebook.
This beautiful walk climbs through parkland to the magnificent hilltop edifice of Chirk Castle before following a section of the historic Offa’s Dyke Path to meet the Llangollen Canal
Stretching 46 miles – from Horseshoe Falls at Llantysilio to Hurleston Junction on the Shropshire Union Canal – the Llangollen Canal is one of Britain’s prettiest waterways. It’s rare to find rich industrial and natural history in such close proximity, yet the deep valleys of the English-Welsh borderlands are enhanced by the man-made structures like the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which straddle them.
Designed by Thomas Telford, Pontcysyllte literally means ‘the bridge that connects’ – and it’s just one of a cluster of complex engineering triumphs which enabled the free passage of goods and people across the border. This marvellous structure spans the River Dee, linking the towns of Trefor and Froncysyllte via a cast iron trough suspended 126m above the valley floor on a series of 18 masonry pillars.
Less than a mile upstream lies the Chirk Aqueduct – another ingenious example of Victorian engineering.
Former Prime Minister David Lloyd George
described the scenery around Chirk as “a little bit of heaven on Earth”. Discover the rolling scenery of the Welsh Marches for yourself while navigating more than a millennium of rich history on this rewarding six-mile walk.
DIRECTIONS
1
Turn right from the main gate of Lady Margaret’s Park Club Campsite, continue along the driveway to a junction in front of the gates and go straight on for 100m to take a footpath on the left signposted to the castle. Follow a grassy path between giant oak trees across the parkland.
2
1.1km – Continue through the gate at the corner of the copse, following a fenced grassy track uphill through another gate,

then following the field boundary and – as the castle comes into view – veering slightly right to a gate.
3
1.8km – Continue through the gate and go straight along an asphalt drive, then turn right at the visitor centre and follow a footpath between woodland and the car park, through two gates and back into the parkland on another grassy track.
4
2.2km – Climb steadily towards the cottage and go through a gate then right onto a lane, following a section of the Offa’s Dyke Path. Where the road heads right, take a footpath on the left and continue over fields to rejoin a road, heading left past a farm.
5
3.9km – Keep right at a fork, descending through woodland, and go straight on at a junction. Follow the track opposite, heading downhill past some houses, then turn left followed by right to pass under a bridge. Head right again and up the steps beside some stables onto the canal towpath.
6
5.4km – Head left along the towpath and skip to point 8 to follow the canal back to St Margaret’s Park. Alternatively, turn right

and continue along the canal towards the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.
7
5.5km – Follow the towpath as the canal curves to the right onto the aqueduct. You can walk single file over the aqueduct but do so with care as the towpath is extremely narrow and high. Retrace your steps to point 6, staying on the same side of the canal (the far bank to the town of Froncysyllte).
8
5.6km – After half a mile, where the canal curves right, follow the towpath under the bridge and continue south through the Whitehouse Tunnel. The towpath has railings here, but it’s narrow and headroom is restricted. It’s also a good idea to bring a torch.
9
7.1km – Continue south on the towpath, now running parallel to the railway and passing Chirk Marina. Pass a factory and go through the woods to a bridge on the edge of Chirk. Veer left on a path up to the bridge, then right to cross to the far side and continue along a lane back to the Club campsite.
