WELCOME

John Thynne says:

From the moment I arrived at the gates of Kelmarsh Hall in late May and was guided onto the event field by the wonderfully friendly volunteers, I knew I was in for a treat. ClubFest 2023 turned out to be everything I was expecting and more. There was fantastic live entertainment to enjoy throughout the four days – fellow ‘ClubFesters’ were raving over the likes of The Illegal Eagles and Killer Queen tribute bands – and guests were able to choose from a plethora of hot food stands.

President: Thomas Coke, 8th Earl of Leicester

Chairman: Grenville Chamberlain OBE

Director General: Nick Lomas

Friendly sports were enjoyed by many – I witnessed a highly competitive mixed doubles darts match in the main bar – while younger guests certainly made the most of the giant slide, climbing wall, bouncy castle, face painting and more.

Pervading the whole event though, was the spirit of camaraderie you just don’t get on a ‘normal’ holiday. People just seemed genuinely pleased to be in each other’s company, enjoying the sunshine, a barbecue or a cold beer.

Here’s to next year at Weston Park in Shropshire! Bookings are already open at camc.com/clubfest and you can find out more on page 15. Elsewhere in the issue we have a watersports theme – Jonathan Manning takes the plunge on an open water swimming course at Rutland Water (pages 66-68), and our Member Offers (pages 52-53) are dedicated to saving you cash on surfing, canoeing and paddle boarding kit as well as related activities. There’s even a gear round-up on pages 70-71 – and you’ll find lots more new watersports related content online at camc.com/blog.

Continuing the watery theme, Jane McGowan leads us on a seven site tour of Norfolk, taking in the coast and Broads on pages 30-44. Hope you enjoy the issue!

Editions of your Club magazine – with lots of extra content – are also available via an app on iPhone/iPad and Android tablets and phones.

OPINION

Nick Lomas says:

Hampshire is blessed with not one but two National Parks – most of the New Forest and part of the South Downs – which together account for 45% of the county’s area. It also features strongly in the history of touring.

The first documented leisure caravan tour, taken there by Dr William Gordon Stables in 1885, helped to establish the county as a popular destination for owners of caravans and motorhomes; Richard St Barbe Baker, of West End, was the builder of the very first caravan towed by a motor car; and Stockbridge Road in Winchester was once home to one of the UK’s most celebrated manufacturers of holiday caravans – Bertram Hutchings Caravans Ltd, later known more simply as Winchester Caravans.

Winchester Caravans will be shared publicly. Donated to the Caravan and Motorhome Club Collection (at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu) in 2015, the items have since been catalogued, digitised and researched in detail by a team of volunteers.

Producing what was referred to as ‘The Rolls Royce of Caravans’, the business spanned five decades, and is the subject of an exhibition entitled ‘Homes on Wheels’ – The Story of Winchester Caravans, taking place at the Hampshire Record Office in Winchester from 4 July to 31 August (see hants.gov.uk/librariesandarchives/ archives/events for opening times). The exhibition will shine a spotlight on the family and business which provided freedom and adventure to a growing number of caravan enthusiasts in the first half of the 20th Century.

A significant collection of photographs, journals and ephemera relating to

This exhibition has been developed in partnership with the Club and the National Motor Museum, thanks to a generous grant from Hampshire Archives Trust. Angela Willis, Senior Curator of the Caravan and Motorhome Club Collection, will share the fascinating origins of the caravan holiday in Hampshire in a talk at the Record Office on 7 August 2023 from 6.30-8.30pm. You can find out more and buy tickets at shop. hants.gov.uk, and there will be an article by Angela in next month’s magazine. Visit Hampshire at any time and you’ll find plenty to do. The Club has four campsites in the county (Black Knowl, New Forest Centenary, Rookesbury Park and Winchester), along with around 60 Certificated Locations. Winchester Club Campsite received a major upgrade just a year ago, which has proved extremely popular with members. We are also running our popular pop-up campsite during July at the Beaulieu Estate, close to the National Motor Museum and the permanent display of the Club’s archive.

BOOK A YEAR IN ADVANCE WITH A FULLY REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT*

Booking made simple

Our new system makes it even easier to book the perfect holiday

Better availability, improved pitch choice, easier ways to search online... These are just a few of the things you asked us to look at as we made plans to improve the Club’s booking system. In fact we sought the views of more than 100,000 new and longer-standing members, carried out five focus groups, held 22 user experience sessions and consulted members of the Executive Committee and site staff prior to the official launch last year!

We appreciate that there have been hitches along the way but we’ve already carried out a number of fixes and improvements to provide you with a better booking experience. Here we take a look at members’ requests and how we implemented them into the new booking journey. Have a look for yourself at camc.com...

AVAILABILITY

You said: “I can’t find availability for the campsites and dates I want so please consider taking deposits to discourage people from making bookings and then not turning up.”

So we: Introduced deposits to reduce speculative bookings, create more availability and give you more choice.

In fact, since the new system went live cancellations have reduced by 70%, creating more available pitches across the UK campsite network. Previous Club studies have suggested member dissatisfaction over a lack of availability – but complaints in this regard largely disappeared in our latest Spring 2023 member survey (keep an eye out for a fuller update in a future magazine).

At press time you could still book stays this summer at popular campsites including Chatsworth Park**, York Rowntree Park and Hillhead. Remember you can book UK Club campsites up to a year in advance (with a fully refundable deposit and free cancellation and amendments up to 21 days before arrival).

PITCH CHOICE

You said: “I want to book a specific pitch type as we have a young child so prefer a grass rather than hard pitch. But you cannot guarantee this so still don’t know what we’ll get.”

You can now choose between grass, hardstanding and other options

So we: Improved the system to enable you to select whatever pitch type you prefer (hardstanding, grass, with or without awning etc) at the time of booking.

Depending on the site you want to stay at, you will be presented with a screen like the above during your booking journey. The option to choose your pitch type gives you greater versatility and peace of mind in the run-up to your holiday.

Hot showers are free on appropriate campsites with shower facilities. Free Wi-Fi service available at 146 UK Club campsites.

EASIER SEARCHING

You said: “I’d like an easier way to browse and search for campsites, using a map so I can see the locations, and be able to refine my choices.”

So we: Launched a new, interactive map facility.

You can now look for, find and compare multiple campsites in your preferred areas across both the UK and Europe.

It’s now easy to make several consecutive campsite bookings

MULTIPLE BOOKINGS

You said: “I’d love to be able to book more than one campsite at a time so I can combine multiple consecutive stays into one booking.”

So we: Introduced a multiple campsite booking facility into the system.

Build and then book a complete holiday itinerary in one session. All your bookings will appear in your ‘ basket’ when you check out.

Right from top: trying out an electric bike; beautiful Kelmarsh Hall; a festival atmosphere!; colourful pitches; Keith and Gaynor; Tony and Christina

Club class!

Indoor and outdoor activities, friendly competition, fantastic food stalls – and fabulous live entertainment – combined to create a ClubFest to remember over the late May bank holiday.

More than 2,300 outfits were greeted with warm sunshine as they arrived at Kelmarsh Hall in Northamptonshire.

Mini-golf, Segway rides and laser shooting were enjoyed by all ages, while younger guests were treated to a ‘mega drop’ inflatable slide, climbing wall, assault course, face painting, balloon modelling and more.

However, most of the highlights were provided by the musical acts who kept ‘ClubFesters’ dancing and singing for four days. The Illegal Eagles proved a huge hit on Friday night, while Killer Queen had literally thousands of campers on their feet and clapping along to

Freddie Mercury and co’s greatest hits the following day.

Many visitors turned off the cooker for the weekend and instead enjoyed a variety of food, from burgers and fish and chips to Indian cuisine.

Tony, Christina (below right) and their dogs Teddy and Belle were attending their second ClubFest following a visit to Belvoir Castle in 2022. “This one’s just as good – and the weather is great of course,” said Tony. “We enjoyed the Eagles tribute band last night – they were excellent!”

Meanwhile, Keith and Gaynor (above right), from Redditch in Worcestershire, were also having a great time. “There are things going on all weekend and we really want to try to make the most of it. We like to try the activities – we’ve had a go at the electronic archery and the mini-golf and we’re going back for the Segways,” said Keith. “We’d definitely

go to ClubFest again – we really like it and we’re looking forward to the Chairman’s announcement later on…”

Club Chairman Grenville Chamberlain OBE did not disappoint as he revealed that ClubFest 2024 would be held within the grounds of Weston Park in Shropshire. Live acts confirmed for next year include star of stage and screen Jason Donovan, Scouting for Girls (whose hits include the chart-topping This Ain’t a Love Song) and Toploader (Dancing in the Moonlight). Grenville also paid tribute to around 150 volunteers who make ClubFest possible.

You can book your tickets for next year’s event today at camc.com/ clubfest. Book by 1 October 2023 and you can save £30 on your total package price (see online for details)!

CLUB SUPPORTS WALES TOURISM WEEK

As reported on page 17 of the June issue, the Club supported Wales Tourism Week in May, sponsoring the annual Welsh Reception at the Senedd in Cardiff alongside the Wales Tourism Alliance (WTA). Club Chairman Grenville Chamberlain OBE spoke on behalf of the Club, and was joined by Suzy Davies (Chair of the WTA), Dawn Bowden MS (Tourism Minister for Wales) and Sam Rowlands MS (Chair of the Cross-Party Working Group on Tourism).

During the same week, Samuel Kurtz MS, Ken Skates MS and Paul Davies MS visited Freshwater East, Lady Margaret’s Park and St David’s Lleithyr Meadow Club campsites respectively. Swell time

The 2023 Caravan and Motorhome Club English National Surfing Championships saw a thrilling weekend of action at Watergate Bay near Newquay, Cornwall, in May. Around 140 shortboard and bodyboard

competitors battled it out over two days across several junior and senior age groups, with a total of 14 titles up for grabs.

The event was enhanced by beach volleyball, chalk art and beach cleaning activities, while

all of the title winners also received a year of Club membership. We are delighted to have been able to continue our support of Surfing England’s exciting event and look forward to next year’s championships.

News from the Club’s Collection

As you may have read on page 9, this summer, the story of one of the UK’s most celebrated holiday caravan manufacturers, Bertram Hutchings Caravans Ltd (later known as Winchester Caravans), will be told in the city of Winchester, Hampshire. A range of activities, including an exhibition, talk and digital tour will showcase the story of this pioneering business, labelled ‘The Rolls Royce of Caravans’. Spanning five decades and

both World Wars, Winchester Caravans were specialists in building horse-drawn, trailer and motor caravans.

On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4 July to 31 August a display will feature in Hampshire Record Office, Winchester, while a talk from Curator Angela Willis on Monday 7 August will examine the caravan holiday in Hampshire.

The Club’s Collection is also

working in partnership with Winchester University to create a digital trail and graphic recreations of Hutchings’ historic caravans, which will help to bring the story back to life.

Details about the voting arrangements will be sent out by email to members in September and will also be in the October magazine. The Club’s Articles and Bye-laws can be found on the Club’s website.

Bird seed

We understand that some guests enjoy feeding the wildlife when staying on Club campsites. If you are using a bird feeder please take everything home with you at the end of your stay – when unwanted seeds or other scraps are thrown away it can encourage vermin. Thank you for leaving pitches tidy for the next occupants.

Many ways to get in touch

We would like to remind you that there are several convenient ways for you to get help from the Club.

Live Chat and Automated Chat

The website’s Live Chat service (also known as ‘web chat’) lets you talk online with one of our experienced Contact Centre agents from 9am to 8pm, Monday-Friday.

To get started, simply click on the box on the website that says ‘Live Chat & FAQs’ or visit camc.com/contact-us and select a category to find the top frequently asked questions, which may give you an answer to your query. If you still need help you’ll be given the option to call us, live chat with an agent or send a contact form.

Our Automated Chat facility is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When prompted, simply type in your question and our ‘AI chat bot’ will suggest an answer or the next course of action. Hundreds of thousands of queries

have been answered in this way since we introduced the service, and it has increased in popularity each year.

Other web pages

The answers to many queries can be found elsewhere on the Club website. For example, the Members Area features links to UK and overseas campsite bookings, an advice and training area and updated membership management pages, insurance/cover information and exclusive offers – see camc.com/guidetotheclub.

A My Profile page (camc.com/login) allows you to view, amend and cancel bookings, renew membership, update your outfit details (please note you must be logged in).

Remember that you can also search, book, amend and cancel site bookings using the new Club App. Using these facilities helps us to manage queries during busier times. Thank you for your help.

A GREAT WEEKEND AT THE SCOTTISH NATIONAL

The Scottish Division hosted another successful Scottish National – the 71st iteration of the annual event – from 28 April-2 May at Lanark Racecourse, with field and other local arrangements organised by the Forth and Clyde Centre. A total of 68 units attended the weekend, travelling from various parts of the UK and Ireland, and the event began informally with a Friday night meet-and-greet in the marquee.

Saturday’s opening ceremony was led by Jean Gilmour, SCC Vice Chair. Jean introduced Councillor Catherine McClymont of Lanarkshire Council, who addressed the attendees before officially opening the event.

A special presentation was made to Norman Micklethwaite (pictured above right with Club Chairman Grenville Chamberlain OBE) to mark an incredible 50 years of caravanning and dedication to the North Lancashire Centre, the North of

Scotland Centre, the North Centre, and the Scottish Division.

Highlights of the event included a reception in the marquee, a dinner dance at the Lanark Agriculture Rooms (a great night enjoyed by all), a non-denominational service taken by SCC Vice-President Val Brownlee and a charity raffle, with proceeds donated to Cancer Research.

Inclement weather could not dampen enthusiasm during the hotly-contested inter-centre sports afternoon, with Forth and Clyde Centre (left) crowned overall winners and Highland Centre picking up the trophy for cheerleading. A concert by Graeme McKenzie capped a memorable weekend before ralliers enjoyed a free day on the Monday.

We are sad to report the passing of Charles (Charlie) Tory, who worked for the Club between 1990 and 2002 as a Regional Sites Manager and, later, as Sites Operations Manager. In that second role, Charlie had responsibility for some 200 Club campsites across the UK, working closely with Regional Managers (RMs) and overseeing the network of site staff.

Charlie’s time at the Club coincided with a period of momentous change, particularly with regard to the way that sites were operated and managed. As well as enhancing lines of communication between site staff, RMs and head office, Charlie also played a pivotal role in the introduction of pensions and defined working hours for site teams.

Charlie’s professionalism throughout was greatly appreciated by his colleagues. He was an excellent administrator and communicator with a practical, common-sense approach to problem solving and management, as well as being a good friend and companion to many. He will be sadly missed. The Club sends its condolences to Charlie’s family and friends.

Mr and Mrs Blake were gearing up to tow their caravan home when a fuel-related issue caused a breakdown. They had taken out Red Pennant Overseas Holiday Insurance, so the Club stepped in to arrange for the car and caravan to be towed to a garage for repairs, and to liaise with authorities in Madrid, as the couple’s 90-day visas were due to expire.

The Club also booked an apartment so that the Blakes could stay close to their car and caravan while it was being examined. Sadly, while they were checking in, one of their two dogs, Dai, ran away.

During the following days, the couple were joined by local police officers, vets and villagers in their

Once their vehicle was repaired, the members made the difficult decision to return home without their beloved pet. The Club found new sites for them to stay at along the way, and rearranged their ferry crossing.

Four weeks later, it was to everyone’s relief when a Spanish vet contacted Mr Blake to inform him that his dog had been brought in by a member of the public.

The manager of the garage that Mr Blake had attended was contacted and she picked up the dog, very kindly getting him wormed and washed; Mr Blake’s sister-in-law was in Spain, and she was able to collect him. Dai had lost some weight and picked up an injury, but we are happy to report that he is now home, safe and sound, and ready for future trips away in the caravan.

“We made use of the motorhome service point and then settled back to enjoy the view. Our pitch was a good size and level, the shower/toilet block was warm and every time we visited was clean. The site was well cared for too.” (March 2023)

“A very scenic and peaceful site with direct access to the coast path. There is a good bus service from the campsite turn-off road, allowing visits to Bude, Crackington Haven, Tintagel and Boscastle, etc.” (March 2023)

“We love the area around Pentire Point, which is a relatively easy 30-minute drive. We did lots of walking, visited some amazing beaches for our lad to play and surf and some lovely cafes/ farm shops. If you are in a camper, grass pitches may be a bit sloped, so bring some levelling ramps.”

Please note that the noseweight figure for the Volkswagen Multivan Style Long 2.0 TSI 204PS 7SPD DSG tested in the May issue should have read 80kg (not 100kg as stated). If you are in doubt about your towcar’s noseweight limit, check the figures in the vehicle handbook and on the towbar plate. Should the two figures differ, usually the lower one applies, but if in doubt contact the manufacturer for further advice.

CL of the Year 2022 overall winner Broadmarsh Farm CL

Inset: The Garden House CL, Best Newcomer in 2022

Digital magazine

CL of the Year 2023: time to nominate!

A large number of members use the Club’s network of Certificated Locations (CLs) – small, privatelyowned five-pitch sites that are situated across the UK. There are CLs on working farms, in fields that command spectacular views, next to beaches and rivers, at fisheries and more. Many of you also take part in our annual CL of the Year awards, which seek to recognise and reward the efforts put in by hard-working CL owners.

CHANGES FOR 2023

This year, in order to recognise and promote a greater variety of CLs, we have decided to make some changes to the categories. The ‘Best Newcomer’ award will remain (for CLs that opened on or after 1 April 2021),

CL of the Year 2023 Entry Form

Please complete this form and send it to:

CL of the Year Awards, Caravan and Motorhome Club, CL Department, East Grinstead House, East Grinstead RH19 1UA

Closing date is:

31 July 2023

One nomination per category per membership number.

NO PHOTOCOPIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Please indicate if you would like to be included in the prize draw for a five-night stay on your favourite CL site: Yes / No

but we are introducing new regional awards for England, Wales, and Scotland and Northern Ireland. We are also launching a ‘Unique’ category and a ‘Sustainability’ category. An ‘Overall Winner’ will be chosen by a panel. Members can nominate CLs in all categories except for Sustainability (we are asking CL owners to nominate their own sites, detailing how they run them sustainably and encourage guests to follow their lead).

NOMINATIONS

This year, instead of allowing nominations over several months, we are holding a CL of the Year month in July. All nominations will need to be submitted between 1 July and midnight on 31 July 2023

Category 1: Best Newcomer (since April 2021)

to be eligible. We encourage you to nominate your favourite CLs online (the form will be available from 1 July at camc.com/clnominate), but you can also fill in the form on this page and post it to us at CL of the Year Awards, Caravan and Motorhome Club, CL Department, East Grinstead House, East Grinstead RH19 1UA. One entrant will be picked at random and will win a free five-night stay on their favourite CL (details and terms and conditions will be available online in July). Owners of the winning CLs will be invited to a celebration meal on the eve of Club Day at the NEC show in October, with the awards being presented the next day. Nominating CLs is a great way of supporting the network, so please do get involved!

The July issue of the Digital Magazine is available to download. Readers can enjoy video reviews, extra pages – including puzzles and a cycle ride from Garlieston Club site – and find the answer to the mystery wildlife picture question in this month’s ‘Country Matters’ article. You can download the app for free from the App Store or Google Play by searching for ‘CAMC Magazine’.

Mel Coleman

We were saddened to hear that Mel Coleman, husband of Annabel Croft, passed away in May. Mel attended many Club events and he is pictured here at the Manchester exhibition this year talking about their campervan, ‘Vannabel’. Mel was a popular figure, always quick to smile and share stories of their travels and adventures. He was a former international professional yachtsman and completed much of the campervan conversion himself. He will be greatly missed and we send our deepest condolences to Annabel, their children and family.

Isle of Wight Sail & Stay is back!

We are delighted to once again offer members a combined deal on holidays to the Isle of Wight – an ever-popular destination due to its slower pace of life, sandy beaches and fantastic attractions to suit all ages.

Working in partnership with ferry operator Red Funnel, our great value Sail & Stay offer this summer starts from just £206† for two people staying for four nights on a grass pitch at Southland Club Campsite, including the return ferry crossing. Four- and seven-night combined deals are available. What’s more, under 5s go free and children between the ages of five and 17 can be added to your booking from just £2.60 per night.

WHY VISIT?

Southland Club Campsite is situated on the east of the island, around 10-15 minutes’ drive from the popular beaches at Sandown and Shanklin (though both are also walkable if you

want to stretch your legs). The site has a playground and play areas, with mostly grass pitches (only 30 of the 140 touring pitches are hardstanding).

Nearby you’ll find pubs, a cafe, supermarkets and attractions including Amazon World Zoo, Adgestone Vineyard (tours and wine tasting lessons are available), Brading Roman Villa and Appuldurcombe House (a Baroquestyle mansion with gardens designed by ‘Capability’ Brown).

Southland Club Campsite is also a great base from which to explore further afield and take advantage of the beautiful coastlines, sandy beaches and attractions that make England’s largest island such a popular holiday spot for all ages.

The island’s bus service is excellent, so it’s easy to leave your vehicle on your pitch and explore. Perhaps a visit to the theme park Blackgang Chine is on the agenda, or

a trip to see the distinctive chalk stacks known as The Needles? Perhaps you’ll fill your time indulging in watersports, cycling, fishing, horse riding or playing golf. You’ll find plenty of ideas in the information room at the campsite.

BOOKING INFO

Ihave lived in Norfolk all my life. It inspires me, the sea, the limitless skies, the mud and the burning sunsets and the freedom of a place where more than 50% of the neighbours are fish.” These are the words of bestselling author Raffaella Barker on the county that has inspired many of her novels.

For the latest details and opening information for all our sites, please see camc.com

And she is right; wherever you venture in Norfolk you are never far from open water. From the rocky coastline around Cromer to the meandering beauty of the Broads, if you are happiest on the waterfront, then this seven-stop tour is not to be missed.

Having said all that, my first port of call was White House Beach in Kessingland, which is, of course, in Suffolk... but only just. A relatively small Club campsite, it is divided into two, with one part offering direct views of the North Sea and the other surrounded by mature willow trees and an array of wildflowers. The shale and shingle beach is just moments away and makes a wonderful backdrop for a bracing walk. Dogs are permitted on the beach all year round.

Nearby, there are seaside walks a-plentyyou could visit Lowestoft to the north or the

very popular Southwold, 10 miles to the south via the coastal path. The sojourn follows waymarked routes and country lanes, taking you through a section of the Benacre National Nature Reserve, where you could make the most of the wildlife spotting opportunities or simply enjoy the surroundings of reed beds, marshland and open water lagoons.

If you fancy a refreshing diversion, then the Five Bells at Wrentham comes highly recommended, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner alongside a fine selection of ales from local brewers Adnams. (Incidentally, once you arrive in Southwold, you may want to explore the company further by means of its

jolly brewery tours or gin-making events.) Back on the route, don’t forget to look out for the Grade I-listed, partly ruined church of St Andrew’s at Covehithe.

’WOLD FAITHFUL

Your final destination will not disappoint. An unspoiled English seaside spot, Southwold is top and tailed by its famed collection of brightly coloured beach huts, traditional pier – with its mix of old and new attractions – and a lively bucket-and-spade-friendly beach at one end and the beautiful downs and spectacular lighthouse at the other.

The town centre is crammed with homeware and gift shops, artisanal food sellers and magnificent cafes and ice cream outlets. There are often pop-up events taking place too, including craft fairs and jumble sales. Southwold can become very busy in the summer, but it’s a place that will appeal to all generations and is not to be missed.

If you don’t fancy the walk back, then simply hop on the number 99 bus, which runs between Lowestoft and Southwold at least hourly, depending on the season. The service

stops just around the corner from the Club site in Kessingland along the way.

You can also drive to Southwold (25-30 minutes) and Lowestoft (20-25 minutes) from Lowlands Certificated Location, which makes a lovely stop-off on this East Anglian sojourn. Situated just outside Beccles, this popular adults-only venue is managed by Judith and Andre, who keep visitors up-todate on the area’s many attractions via their

well-stocked information booth. Directly accessible from the site are several walks, including one leading directly to Beccles (around 30 minutes).

This lovely market town features an array of shops, cafes and pubs on twisty streets close to the River Waveney. While there, make sure you visit St Michael’s Church and its detached 16th-century bell tower. Standing at some 97ft, the structure can be seen from miles around – the 10 bells within ring out once a week.

As already mentioned, water is very much in evidence no matter where you venture on this route. A variety of vessels can be hired from venues across Beccles, such as electric

day boats, canoes, kayaks and rowing boats. Should you fancy swapping your paddle for a pool, then the town even has its own lido.

LIFE AQUATIC

The Waveney is one of the seven rivers that feed the Broads National Park (the other six being the Yare, Chet, Ant, Bure, Thurne and Wensum). During the medieval period, channels of peat (a great fuel source) were dug throughout the region – subsequent flooding led these ‘paths’ to be submerged by water, creating a criss-cross pattern.

By the Victorian era the area had grown into a holiday destination and a growing number of pleasure cruisers joined the

working boats and barges. Today, around eight million visitors a year are attracted to this lovely corner of England to enjoy the unique surroundings.

Covering just over 300km 2 , the Broads National Park is accessible from each ‘port’ on this tour, including the second Club campsite on this visit – Great Yarmouth Racecourse, which is just a short hop from Beccles over the border into Norfolk. Here, aside from the obvious race day excitement, you could make use of the adjacent golf course – Great Yarmouth and Caister Golf Club. I am reliably informed that the mainly traditional links course also offers some lovely parkland holes, although the sea breeze can sometimes play havoc with your swing...

A seaside resort since 1760 Great Yarmouth has plenty to offer modern-day holidaymakers, and families will want to make the most of the Pleasure Beach, adventure golf courses and fine selection of fish and chip and rock shops. The Club site is just 300m from the sandy shoreline – so it’s buckets and spades at the ready once again.

You’ll also find a number of pretty villages and quieter seaside spots, including Hemsby and Caister-on-Sea, close to the campsite. A little further to the north is Horsey Beach, where you can observe the resident seal colony all year round (take note of local guidelines, especially during the breeding season).

En route to site stop number four, sSeacroft, is the beautiful coastal village of Happisburgh – which, just to give you a heads up, is pronounced ‘Haysbro’. A handy, free walking trail can be downloaded from happisburgh.org.uk/explore, enabling you to discover the village’s eye-catching, 18thcentury white and red striped lighthouse (the oldest working example on the Norfolk coast), as well as another church tower, this time belonging to the 15th-century St Mary’s, and the beach on which the remnants of the

village’s ‘low lighthouse’ can still be spotted at low tide.

In 2010 the area found fame when a significant number of flint tools were unearthed, revealing human habitation in the area 800,000 years ago.

NEAR NEIGHBOURS

And so to next venues Seacroft and Incleborough Fields, which are just seven minutes’ drive apart, both lying in-between the coastal resorts of Cromer and Sheringham on the north Norfolk coast.

and The Wanderer Restaurant – so you can enjoy some satisfying, freshly cooked fayre if you fancy a night off cooking.

It’s a 20-minute walk to Cromer’s town centre, where, aside from the famous Cromer Crab & Lobster Festival (which takes place in May), you’ll find an interesting selection of events throughout the year. During my visit in early May, ‘Folk on the Pier’ was in full swing and the town was alive with music as buskers played on every street corner. Once again, Cromer offers you the chance to embrace the classic English escape to the seaside, thanks to the likes of amusements, ice cream and beachside crazy golf.

Like Great Yarmouth Racecourse, Incleboro Fields Club Campsite is bordered by a golf course – The Links Golf Club. If you fancy exploring further afield on foot, you can also enjoy walks to West and East Runton from the site. The former is perhaps best known for the 1990 discovery of a fossilised skeleton of a steppe mammoth – one of the oldest fossil elephants to be found in the UK.

Seaside Sheringham is well worth a visit –there’s a promenade, beach and plenty of choice along the high street if you’re looking for food, drink or that special souvenir.

If you can tear yourself away from the coast, Norfolk has its fair share of stately homes and gardens. The most famous is, of course, Sandringham – the country retreat bought by the royal family in 1862. My visit to the county coincided with the Coronation of King Charles III – probably not the ideal time to pop by. But, should you fancy finding out more about this fabulous estate, tours are available throughout the year (and if you’re looking for a fitness challenge, Parkrun takes place every Saturday morning across the parkland).

For Club members there is, of course, the option of staying at The Sandringham Estate Club Campsite, but sadly a stop here wasn’t on the agenda this time around. My next site was farther inland: The Station CL in Attlebridge. Coronation festivities were in full swing and it was lovely to see how owner Janet and partner Keith were facilitating an event members will remember for years.

CAPTIVATING LANDSCAPE

As the name suggests, this pretty CL is set just behind a converted former station (now doubling as the owner’s home). The old railway line - Marriotts Way – has been

adapted for horseriders, walkers and cyclists and covers 26 miles from Norwich to Aylsham (see norfolk.gov.uk for details).

There is a captivating, shifting landscape to enjoy along the route – including the Wensum river valley and Whitwell Common.

If you head south-east from Attlebridge, the city of Norwich appears after about eight miles. offering the chance to visit the beautiful cathedral (it’s dog-friendly) and enjoy another riverside walk. The latter takes in some of the old city and landmarks such as Pull’s Ferry and Cow Tower – a 14th-century artillery blockhouse constructed as part of the area’s defences. It is free to enter and, again, dogs (on leads) are welcome.

The last Club campsite on my route was Thetford Forest, which revealed another aspect of the county: its magnificent woodland. Situated on a Forestry Commission plot, it’s a quiet and secluded site, offering access to some truly lovely trails beneath the canopies of ancient trees.

Towns in the area worth exploring include Swaffham and King’s Lynn, but I headed a little farther afield to Ely in Cambridgeshire, where you will find loads to keep you

occupied. You could fill a day with a visit to the breathtaking cathedral, The Stained Glass Museum (housed in the cathedral) and Oliver Cromwell’s House. Once again, Ely offers you the chance to spend time on the water, with boat trips of various types available for daytrippers to enjoy.

As the rain set in once again (my tour had been frequently interrupted by the British weather!), it was time to say goodbye to this watery wonder of a region. But even the dark clouds overhead couldn’t put a damper on my desire for a prompt return.

DARK MATTERS

Arriving at Coniston Park Coppice Club Campsite this April was a joy! First order of business – find the loos and… hello? What’s this on the door (right)? Oh, I very much approve! I’m an astrophotographer. I love the night sky. The Caravan and Motorhome Club has sites in some of the darkest areas of the UK. Park Coppice and Coniston rank right up there with the best. I pondered what this would mean over my first cuppa on my new pitch and waited for it to get dark. I wasn’t disappointed.

Run of York

Last year we were lucky enough to buy our first motorhome, named Riley, and couldn’t wait to embark on our new adventures.

Being very keen Parkrun participants, we decided to set ourselves the goal of completing the ‘Pakrun alphabet’, whilst camping around the countryside.

For those of you who haven’t heard of Parkrun, it is a 5K run that takes place every Saturday morning all over the world. It’s free and friendly and a great way to socialise and learn more about the place you’re staying, as you’ll always meet lots of locals. You don’t have to be a runner – you can run, jog or walk it. You can even bring your dog or baby buggy!

THE PULL MONTY!

Having a fabulous time at this wonderful site [Fairlight Wood]. The woods for the dog walk are in full bloom with a sea of bluebells! Monty adores running through them. Hope you like the picture as much as we do.

This April we completed the much-sought-after UK Parkrun alphabet when we visited York (there is no ‘Z’ in the UK). It couldn’t have been a better end to our challenge, as York was an incredible place to stay. We were given such a warm welcome at the York Rowntree Park site by Eddie and his team. Eddie took a real interest in what we were doing and was there when we got back from York Parkrun to ask how we’d got on, as did lots of other campers at the site.

So next time you’re away camping, why not check out where the nearest Parkrun is and join in. I can guarantee that camping breakfast afterwards will taste even better!

Even with most of the lights dimmed, a stray light was coming from one podium and the nearby toilet block, with light reaching up and above the highest trees. As a photographer I can enhance the stars and minimise the effect of the stray light.

A short walk off the site to the shores of Coniston Water improved the visuals and photography no end. I took an image of the Milky Way rising over Coniston which was easily visible and a sight to behold.

Three good nights at Park Coppice and then onto North Ledaig campsite where, again, I was treated to some of the best skies in the UK – and the appearance of the Northern Lights in spectacular fashion (pictured).

In summary, light pollution is a real problem. It impacts on local wildlife in ways we’re not always aware of. It robs us of a good night’s sleep as well as the beauty of the night sky, which is a real shame. On the whole, campers at

Club sites are very respectful in their use of lights at night.

Site owners could do more but this is a great start. Dimmer podium/ safety lights would help. Downlighters on external lights and facilities blocks with motion sensor light activation would easily reduce light pollution and save site owners money. I fully support the drive to protect dark skies and applaud this initiative, not just on self interest for my hobby but also on the benefits for the local environment and ecology, CO2 emissions and cost savings. Well done to the sites that participated.

A note from the Club’s Head of Strategic Product Development and Sustainability: We have had such fantastic feedback from members who supported us during Dark Sky week. It truly supports the biodiversity on our sites and we love that you were able to take such incredible photos. As part of the Club’s drive to be more sustainable, based on feedback we are keeping the pitch bollard lights off for the rest of the season and recommend members bring a torch.

PARTY TIME

Following a very happy party celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee at Ferry Meadows last year, my family and friends decided to celebrate the King’s Coronation in the same style. Fourteen of us managed to get pitches in the same area and decided to set up a ‘Street party’. We tied up many yards of bunting and balloons plus lots of flags for Saturday morning. The party got together in an awning to watch the Coronation on TV and then in the afternoon had a buffet tea which went on into the evening. All this despite the pouring rain. In the true British style, it didn’t keep us in. The delightful staff then presented the party with a couple of bottles of bubbly for the best turn out. Thanks to all the staff at Ferry Meadows who as usual were most helpful.

Stephen Burwell, via email

Editor’s note: Glad you had such a good time Stephen! You can see a selection of celebrations from other sites in Your Photos on pages 10 and 11.

PRESTON POET

My wife, Eileen, suffered a stroke in May 2022, and while she was in the excellent Sue Ryder neuro re-hab centre in Preston she was encouraged to write poems, something she never used to do. Here’s one of them:

Motorhome, or caravan

It’s a room with a view

It doesn’t really matter if it’s old or brand new Wherever you park up, on a site or a rally

You can just sit and watch, or go out and be pally

Whatever the size, sleeping 2, 4, 6 or 7

Close your eyes, it can feel just like heaven

You may be in Cornwall, Scotland or Rome

But wherever you get to it can be better than home

Whatever the weather, rain, sun or fog, you can always include your cat, parrot, or dog

Just enjoy your travels.

Allen Winterbottom, via email

Editor’s note: Eileen has really captured the essence of touring – complete freedom! I hope her rehab is going well – best wishes from the magazine team.

FIVE DECADES OF FUN

Our [50 years of] membership dates back to the time of our return from a two-year spell in South Africa. We had three children, the youngest being under 12 months old. What to do regarding holidays? We had already become aware of caravanning while abroad and started looking in that direction soon after our return. We started off with a Sprite Musketeer which gave us all the room we needed. We remember well the gas mantles and the foot-pump for water plus the bucket-and-chuck-it for the loo.

In our years of caravanning we have travelled the length and breadth of the UK, plus a memorable holiday in Ireland – lovely country and

friendly people. We have lost count of the number of Club sites we have stayed on, but one thing they all have in common is the excellent condition of the sites, the facilities, and, above all, the friendliness and help given by the staff.

Unfortunately, now we have reached our late 80s, we have decided towing a caravan has become too much, so, reluctantly, we have sold our Swift Accord, but we have continued using Club sites by way of the facilities offered by Experience Freedom.

Thank you again, and may the Club enjoy many more decades of success in the future.

COMPASSIONATE RESPONSE

I write following my most recent contact with the Contact Centre. Unfortunately, I had to call to cancel a booking for the Melrose site following the unexpected death of my mother-in-law. I realised during the early part of the call s s did not have my membership s s card or number, nor that of my husband who was in Surrey with his family, while I was at home in Northumberland. The call handler was calm and reassuring while I t sried, all the time barely suppressing tears, to give her the information she needed.

We have been issued with a voucher, for which we are extremely

A 20/20 VISION

grateful, but the most important part of this letter is to thank the member of staff who was compassionate, well trained and an excellent example of the wonderful caring nature of the organisation. Sadly, in my confusion I did not get her name.

A very difficult time has been made slightly easier. Thank you. Lesley and John Craig, via email

Editor’s note: Please accept our deepest condolences; thank you for taking the time to write – we have passed on your message to the Contact Centre.

April 2023 has marked a wonderful 20 years for us – 20 years of caravanning and, equally as important, 20 years as members of the Club. Where on earth have those years gone? We started out with a 1990 Elddis Whirlwind XL, buying it for £1,650 and selling it after three-and-a-half years for an impressive £2,150, as we looked after it, maintained it and loved it. We then moved onto a Bailey Ranger, brand new in 2007, the ‘Bubbly Ranger’ as we still call it due to the bubble pattern on the side. This was our first fixed-bed – we thought we were royalty. We kept the Bailey for eight years before moving on to a Lunar Quasar. [We then had the] opportunity to purchase a Swift Challenger 580 SE. We kept that van for six years [then] traded it in for our new 2023, Swift Challenger 580 SE. We love the layout, it works for us and our little dog Bert. What a journey we have been on, and still loyal members of the Club and the lovely sites we visit. Some of our favourites are Broadway, Freshwater East and Cirencester Park, where we just enjoyed our Easter break and celebrated our 20 years of caravanning with our friends. While we are still happy to tow and see wonderful parts of the UK, we have no intention of giving up any time soon. Thank you for giving us our freedom life in the caravan!

HOOKED ON ELECTRIC?

It was inspiring to read [Club Head of Strategic Product Development and Sustainability] Natasha Shane’s article on the leading environmental initiatives the Club is developing [Sustainability Matters, June issue]. One further way to promote the reduction of energy on site could be staring us in the face. When campervans, motorhomes and caravans arrive on site the excess electrical energy produced by our vehicles has charged our accommodation batteries. Furthermore, many of us now have our own solar panels, topping up our batteries on site. Unfortunately, the current way of pricing almost always includes electrical hook-ups and does not provide an incentive for members to leave their hook-up cables in their lockers. Would a

discount for not using the Club’s energy resources be better for the environment, members and the Club?

Phil Pilkington, via email

Editor’s note: Thanks for the email. The Club has started a smart metering trial at Wyatts Covert (below) – you can find out more at camc.com/smartmetering. Others may be interested to know that 17 Club campsites offer non-electric pitches – see camc.com/ economypitches.

“Before Covid, I took the plunge and towed the caravan, on my own, from the UK to Alannia. I was alone, but thanks partly to the large tables in the hall, I instantly met five or six new friends. For me, as a solo traveller, it’s been great. I met Marian two years ago, and we’ve stayed in touch ever since, returning here for another winter sun break.

It’s the camaraderie of camping. I’ve been on several hotel-based holidays, and you don’t get that same feeling of togetherness.”

Long Stay Winter Sun holidays offer you the chance to join fellow Club members in warmer

out more...

Looking to escape the cold UK during the winter months? Want to treat yourself to a getaway following the traditional festive period? Fancy getting together with old friends or meeting new ones and taking part in a plethora of exciting activities? Like the idea of a hosted break where much of the stress is taken off your shoulders? Then one of the Club’s Long Stay Winter Sun holidays could be exactly what you need.

With sunshine often in short supply during winter in the UK, the Caravan and Motorhome Club offers members the opportunity to enjoy extended, hosted winter holidays (‘Long Stay Winter Sun’ breaks) on sites in Spain (Portugal was an option in 2023 but is not on offer during 2024).

The length of your stay can be anything from two to eleven weeks, from early January to the end of March. The Club’s travel team can arrange tunnel or ferry crossings (with a price guarantee on the crossing – see camc.com/lowestprice for information) as well as the campsite bookings. The pitch fees represent fantastic value for money, with prices starting from just £12 in 2023 per night for two people, including electric hook-up with a 6kW daily allowance.

Dedicated holiday hosts welcome you onto site and look after you during your stay. They will often organise events too - but the success of these holidays depends not only on members participating in the events, but also helping to run them. The group usually shares a multitude of common interests and it’s great when these can be enjoyed with others.

I have two children in full-time education, so I wasn’t able to fully immerse myself in a long-term stay. However, over the winter I did manage a seven-day break in Spain and visited two destinations - Alannia Costa Blanca and La Manga - for a taste of the Long Stay Winter Sun experience.

ALANNIA COSTA BLANCA

Set near Crevillente in the province of Alicante, this is one of the largest campsites I’ve visited in Europe. Even during winter the impressive list of facilities includes a bar/restaurant, on-site mini-mart, padel tennis courts, outdoor pool tables and swimming pools (one outdoor and one indoor with a spa). The £14 per night pitch fee (2023 price) didn’t include use of the spa

the
climes at attractive prices. Lee Davey travelled to Spain to find

Restaurante La Bambula, Jávea Jávea, Costa Blanca

MEMBER VIEWS La Manga

“Not only is this our first Winter Sun experience, but it’s also our first trip abroad with the camper. We had an email from the Caravan and Motorhome Club just as we were thinking about a trip abroad, and we thought we’d give it a go thanks to it being under the Club’s umbrella of protection. Mick is enjoying walking football, walking netball (having never played netball in his life!), cycling and hill walking. Another factor is Mick’s knees; rather than suffering during a UK winter, he can walk and cycle here thanks to the climate.”

or courts, but it did cover one free session in the indoor pool per week and unlimited use of the outdoor pool. It’s worth noting that outdoor pool opening times are weather-dependent.

Long Stay Winter Sun participants are grouped together at the end of the site, spread across an array of sizeable hardstanding pitches divided by small hedgerows. A large, dedicated building is used for group events and meetings, and this is where you’ll find details of future activities posted. Away from the group pursuits, the site is also a handy base for exploring Santa Pola, Benidorm or Jávea.

LA MANGA

La Manga gets its name from La Manga del Mar Menor, a seaside spit in the Murcia region of Spain.

The spit is approximately 13 miles long and 100m wide, and separates the Mediterranean Sea from the Mar Menor lagoon. The campsite sits inland of the lagoon, and views from the beach and restaurant stretch towards the spit.

Upon entry, you pass an eclectic mix of permanent static residences (very common in Spain) in varying states of repair, before looping back to enter the site’s dedicated Winter Sun section, which is divided by hedges that give it a self-contained feel.

As with Alannia Costa Blanca, La Manga Winter Sun participants enjoy sole use of a dedicated room for running events. Additionally,

a tent set up opposite the hosts’ pitch serves as an information hub, displaying upcoming events and other useful details.

FIELD REPORT

A surprising number of the attendees at both the sites I visited were first-timers.

As you might expect from the touring community, camaraderie was very much in evidence. One couple at La Manga were on their first Winter Sun break and had no idea what to expect or what equipment to bring – but any gaps in their kit were filled by other Club members who were more than happy to help. This was just one example of the community spirit felt at La Manga and Alannia Costa Blanca.

If friendship is the backbone of the Winter Sun holiday, activities are the glue that binds everything together. Members can enjoy numerous activities, from golfing days and cycle excursions to movie nights and quizzes.

Valentine’s Day fell during our visit, so my wife, Helen, and I enjoyed a fantastic Cake & Cava afternoon with the lovely folks at La Manga and a Valentine’s evening with the fabulous Alannia team. During these events, I asked other attendees to sum up Long Stay Winter Sun breaks in just three words. “Truly fantastic hosts”, “best fun ever” and “back next year” were just three of the very positive responses I received.

I must say a huge thank you to hosts Bob and Lyn, Chris and Mary, and Jack and Rosina from Alannia Costa Blanca, and Sam and Judith from La Manga. They are all volunteers who work their socks off to ensure everyone has a great time.

For more information about the Club’s Long Stay Winter Sun hosted breaks, please visit camc.com/longstaywintersun. Details about 2024 breaks will be added to the website soon.

RED PENNANT (European breakdown and travel insurance)

If I had to sum up Red Pennant cover in three words, it would be ‘supercharged travel insurance’. There’s not enough room on this page to do the policy justice, so I’ll leave you with a quote from a Long Stay Winter Sun participant:

“My husband was suddenly taken ill and we had to cut short our holiday.

The Red Pennant team arranged for a car to take us from the hospital to the airport, where we boarded a flight they had also booked and paid for. Unknown to us, they had also booked a car at the other end to take us home.

“Our car and caravan were still on the pitch in Spain, and the awning was up, but within 10 days, our car, caravan

and freshly-packed awning were delivered safely home. My husband and I are back again this year, and, yes, we have Red Pennant cover again.”

TERRIFIC PACIFIC

Take in staggering rock formations,

beaches,

and iconic cities on one of our independent coastal tours Down Under

THE PACIFIC COAST DRIVE

Rugged national parks, awe-inspiring wildlife and the chance to ‘sandboard’ on giant dunes – our Pacific Coast Drive tour in eastern Australia has something for all kinds of adventurers!

Following your flight you will have plenty of time to unwind and explore Brisbane, the capital of the state of Queensland. Once you have picked up your motorhome, your journey proper kicks off with a drive to Byron Bay –mainland Australia’s most easterly point and the home of the iconic Cape Byron Lighthouse. As well as its spectacular beaches, the area is known for its shopping and dining experiences and vibrant community spirit.

Next on your itinerary is the city of Coffs Harbour, where you will find a marine sanctuary and have the chance to go on a whale watching tour. It’s also the home of the Big Banana Fun Park! Farther south is Port Macquarie – why not take the coastal walk to the lighthouse, where you might spot

whales and dolphins, or take a trip to Billabong Zoo Koala and Wildlife Park?

Continuing to trace the coast southwards you arrive at Lake Macquarie, where laid-back neighbourhoods surround Australia’s largest coastal saltwater lake – it’s more than twice the size of Sydney Harbour.

Katoomba in the Blue Mountains National Park is your next destination. Your base is close to the famous Three Sisters rock formation, as well as Katoomba Falls and Scenic World, where you can enjoy a cable car ride above the rainforest canopy. You could take one of the bush walks that lead to spectacular viewpoints and hidden waterfalls, before relaxing in the friendly cafes, restaurants and pubs of the town centre.

Your last day of driving takes you to magnificent Sydney, where you can take in fabled sights such as the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. A final treat before you head home is a fabulous Sunset Dinner Cruise around the harbour.

Having had a chance to unwind, you pick up your motorhome on the sixth day and start your journey south towards Mission Beach – a 14km stretch of palm-fringed sands. Then drive on through the heart of Queensland’s sugar cane industry towards Townsville, perhaps stopping to admire the landscapes around Ingham and the TYTO Wetlands, home to more than 240 species of bird.

ROLE REVERSAL

David Chapman introduces a small bird that makes long journeys and defies gender stereotypes

The ‘red-necked phalarope’ – now there’s a name! The word ‘phalarope’ has a wonderfully mysterious feel to it and, true to form, this is an enigmatic bird which breaks conventions.

Globally, there are three types of phalarope: the red-necked, Wilson’s and the grey. Of these, only the red-necked breeds in the UK. The other two occur as migrants, usually in the autumn. All three share a few features which tie them together as a family.

Phalaropes are small wading birds that spend some time on land in the summer. However, unusually, they live predominantly on water, where they are noted for spinning in tight circles. This motion creates a vortex that brings their prey – such as aquatic insects and plankton – to the surface, where it can be picked off.

Because they spend time both in and out of the water, phalaropes have evolved lobed feet, and it is this trait that gives them their name. Phalaropus (the scientific name) is derived from the Ancient Greek words ‘phalaris’ for coot and ‘pous’ for foot: the phalarope is literally ‘coot-footed’.

Like many other bird species, red-necked phalaropes show sexual dimorphism. In other words, their significant differences in size and/or plumage make it possible for us to distinguish between the two sexes. Generally where birds are concerned, the male is often the more colourful of the two sexes, but female red-necked phalaropes reverse this trend. The reason for this is logical but quite surprising.

In phalaropes there is a role reversal between the sexes. The females display and compete with each other to attract a mate – in fact, a female will do her best to pair up with more than one male, laying eggs in a number of nests to increase her chances of passing on her genes to the next generation.

The term for this is polyandry (the term means ‘many men’ in Ancient Greek). Conversely, the males are thought to be monogamous, remaining faithful to just one female.

Both sexes are involved in selecting a suitable nest site – a simple depression

Above from top: the female red-necked phalarope is more colourful than the male; spending some time preening Left: a female will call to proclaim her territory

in marshy vegetation – but it is the male who adds the grass to it before the female lays her eggs. The male then incubates and raises the chicks. Once the eggs are laid the female will spend time protecting her mate from other females.

LONG-HAULERS

Red-necked phalaropes breed in the far north – Iceland, Greenland, Russia and Scandinavia, for example – but they can also be found in the northernmost parts of Britain (the British Trust for Ornithology estimates a population of 64 breeding males). May to July is the best time to observe them, with two of the best places for spotting being RSPB nature reserves: the hide at Mires of Funzie (Fetlar, Shetland); and Loch na Muilne (Lewis, Outer Hebrides).

When it comes to winter migration, the females leave a little earlier than the males, who stay to rear the youngsters. Most European red-necked phalaropes head south to the Arabian Sea, but recent research has shown that our phalaropes undertake a far more astonishing journey. They head west across the Atlantic, joining birds from Iceland and Greenland in a migration which takes them first along the east coast of North America, across the Gulf of Mexico and then

to the Pacific Ocean, off the west coast of Central America. The total distance of over 10,000km (about 6,000 miles) is achieved with an average of four stopovers.

This distance seems all the more incredible given the red-necked phalarope is a very small bird with a wingspan of about 32cm (the same as a skylark). Perfectly formed, the red-necked phalarope is a dainty delight with a slender bill and beautiful plumage. The females have a striking red-ochre pattern on the breast and neck, forming a colourful collar around a white throat patch. The rest of their plumage is dominated by a stylish steel grey that is decorated with golden stripes on the wings. The hard-working males don’t need to be as colourful as the females, but their patterning is similar.

As the breeding season ends and they begin their migration, both male and female phalaropes moult into a less colourful plumage. Neither the eastern European nor the British-bred red-necked phalaropes typically migrate along the coasts of Britain; nonetheless they are occasionally found on coasts and lakes around the UK, especially after stormy weather in autumn.

So, there you have it. A small bird with a big story. Isn’t wildlife amazing?

MYSTERY PHOTO

Every month I will show you a photo of something from the natural world. It might be a close-up, or of a subject that is difficult to identify. All you have to do is figure out what it is! Here is this month’s photo; no clues or prizes – it’s just for fun. (I will give you the answer next month, but if you can’t wait, see the Digital Magazine.)

STAY SAFE

According to the Royal Life Saving Society UK, around 85% of accidental drownings occur at open water sites (these include lakes, rivers, canals, reservoirs and quarries). So it is vital that you consider your safety and that of others before having a go. Simple advice on the RLSS UK website includes:

Think about the water temperature and the weather

Plan your exit before you get into the water

Consider currents, tidal flow and wind direction

Use a recognised venue, preferably lifeguarded

Wear a brightly coloured swim hat

Have warm clothes ready for afterwards

Swim with a friend or open water swimming group

You can find lots more information by visiting rlss.org.uk and clicking on the ‘Water Safety’ tab at the top of the page. Here you will also find information on ‘cold water shock’ and how you can acclimatise at home prior to taking the plunge. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution website (rnli.org) also contains plenty of safety advice.

the Taking

plunge

It turns out that the first challenge of swimming in Rutland Water – the picturesque reservoir that services the East Midlands – has nothing to do with fears of cold water, unknown depths and tendrils of weed brushing my feet, but the difficulty of pulling on a wetsuit. I slowly wiggle my legs into the clammy suit, shuffling the rubber up inch by inch until it’s over my waist, before finally squeezing its cling film-like grip over my shoulders. Open-water swimming may provide mindful moments out in a river, lake or sea, but its preparations are far from glamorous.

And just in case I’m not feeling self-conscious enough already, I’m wearing a bright orange swim hat and I’ve clipped a fluorescent pink swim float around my midriff.

Mary Hardwick, coach and director of Inspire2tri, gently ribs 15 of us (13 women, two men) about our collective appearance as we prepare for our first experiences of open-water swimming. The aim of this introductory class is to build our confidence to swim in a less controllable, more natural environment than our local pools. Two or three of the group have their eyes on a first triathlon, but the majority of us simply want to tap into the zen calmness

July 2023 www.camc.com 66 ACTIVITY BREAKS SWIMMING
The UK has seen a boom in the popularity of open-water swimming. Jonathan Manning dips his toe in the water with an introductory lesson

of swimming without the smell of chlorine filling our nostrils.

The only pre-condition is that we consider ourselves to be confident pool swimmers, capable of swimming 200m non-stop – although we won’t be counting lengths on this occasion, and the only butterfly we’ll see is a red admiral. As we tiptoe across gravel to the water’s edge, one of Rutland’s ospreys flies overhead – you don’t see that at your local leisure centre.

At the end of a hot July day, the water temperature has nudged up to about 18˚C – perhaps warmer in the shallows – and, insulated by the wetsuit, it’s easy to stride into

the reservoir. At this point Mary reminds us to bounce up and down 10 times and pull open the neckline of our suits, letting water sneak its chilly way down our spines. Involuntary squeals from the group signal compliance with the instructions – in a couple of minutes our bodies will have warmed this thin layer of water, but it’s a very long 120 seconds. Two women have bravely decided to wear only swimsuits.

If you fancy getting to grips with swimming in the waves, a one-hour, 1:1 course (£70) with an instructor on a paddleboard will help build your seaswimming confidence.

Perched on a kayak, Mary issues simple directions to swim either breaststroke or front crawl out to a white buoy. There’s no rush or race, and we string out between Mary and a rescue boat bringing up the rear, hi-vis ducklings shepherded by attentive parents.

In theory, swimming should be swimming wherever the location, and just a question of staying afloat and propelling our bodies, but in practice this feels very different. The knowledge that the bottom is 30m below my feet preys on my mind. And when I tread water at the buoy, I’m spooked by the sight of white flashes below me until I realise that they’re my own feet – I’ve seen Jaws too many times! Sharing an environment with insects, fish and weed has the potential to kick-start a bout of the heebie-jeebies no matter how relaxing this is supposed to be. Do trout and pike ever attack humans?

But the positives soon become apparent. For a start, the wetsuit adds so much buoyancy that swimming front crawl has never been easier. Plus, I realise that I’m comfortably warm – even my bare hands and feet. Better still, when I hug the float to my chest and bob in the water, the amazing peace of being out in the reservoir, with birds above and only the gentlest ripple on the surface, starts to create a magical experience. Being alone with my thoughts in the vast expanse of Rutland Water creates the same humbling feeling I have when gazing up at a star-filled night sky – a reminder that I’m just a tiny speck in a vast universe. This is so far removed from the lanes and shrieks of an indoor pool that it’s a different activity altogether.

BOOM TIME

Figures from Sport England indicate that in 2017/18 more than 4.1 million people swam in lakes, lochs, rivers and sea, and this number was driven higher during lockdown, when public pools

closed. Two-thirds of outdoor swimmers say the activity is essential or very important to their mental health. Open-water swimming events are starting to pop up with the frequency of 10Ks for road-runners, although many swimmers never intend to race.

Once all of us have reached our destination, Mary points to a second buoy farther out in the reservoir as our next target, and off we set. For the crawl swimmers she recommends sighting –checking we are on the correct path – every few strokes, and using a landmark on the far shore as a navigational guide. If waves were to pick up, the buoy might disappear from our meniscus-level line of sight. There’s no tide or current, but without the black painted lines of a swimming pool floor to guide us, it’s surprising how easy it is to veer off course. Meanwhile, the breaststroke contingent swim serenely as the crow flies towards the marker. Upon arrival at the second buoy, the shed where we entered the reservoir looks tiny on the shoreline. We’re about 300m from dry land, which for me would be an intimidating distance without the comfort blanket of other swimmers and the rescue boat (Swimming England states that you should never swim alone in open water). But towing a float means we can stop for a breather whenever required, and in less than a quarter of an hour we’re back at our start point. In total, we’ve spent about 45 minutes in the water – it’s longer than I’ve ever swum without putting my feet down, but the time has flashed by. I’m delighted to have taken the plunge into open-water swimming.

Lee Davey continues his money-saving quest by taking advantage of the Club’s latest short-term car hire deal

In the January 2022 issue (pages 60-62), I talked about the various ways that Club membership could save you money, using our typical caravanning year as an example. One of the latest Club partnerships has the potential to save you money and make travel more convenient.

Car ‘clubs’ have been in the UK for a number of years, offering access to locally sited cars on a short-term hire basis. They could benefit many motorhome owners, especially those who prefer to pitch just once and then use other forms of travel from site (such as a nearby bus or train service). Or they could represent a handy way to enter clean air zones without penalty (potentially helping you do your bit for the environment too).

The Caravan and Motorhome Club has partnered with Enterprise Car Club, which has multiple pick-up locations nationwide. The typical annual membership is £60, although if you join with the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s discount code, you will receive a £40 discount on your first year, plus £20 free driving credit.

To examine this offer in greater detail and combine it with other money-saving offers, I

booked a pitch at Crossways Club Campsite near Dorchester, aiming to explore local attractions using an Enterprise Car Club car. It’s worth noting that you’ll need to join comfortably in advance of your trip – once the online application form has been submitted, along with the required driving licence photos, it can take 48 hours to receive a verification phone call from Enterprise Car Club. With my membership activated, I downloaded the app, entered my details, and then scrolled to

Once the booking has been made, and confirmed via e-mail, you need to arrive at the car at the designated time, unlock it via the app, enter your unique pin into the keypad inside the glove box, retrieve the key and begin your journey.

Enterprise Car Club cars can’t be delivered, so you may need to drop someone at the Enterprise bay on your way to the site – or catch a bus or train to collect your vehicle. Talking of trains, collection points can include train stations as well as supermarket car parks, something I wasn’t aware of until the lovely staff at Enterprise Dorchester mentioned it.

The hire fee is per hour or per day. It includes fuel – but you pay for mileage covered. Should you need to fill up, a fuel card can be found in the glove box. Enterprise Car Club provides electric vehicles at some of its locations (not Dorchester) in which case you will be provided with a charge card. Be sure to check for damage before setting off (make

Non-electric pitches

Don’t forget that some of our sites – including Crossways – offer non-electric pitches, which are perfect for those who are happy to rely on their leisure battery/solar panels etc. For comparison, the price for three nights on a hardstanding pitch at Crossways for two adults and a child from 21 April 2023 was £99 – the equivalent economy pitch was £82.80 ( a potential saving of £16.20). sure you don’t overlook things such as wheels and windscreen) – you can report anything you spot via the app. I didn’t want the possible burden of a £1,000 damage excess charge, so as this was a trial run, I decided to pay an extra £2 per hour to reduce this to just £100. If I find this service particularly useful during future trips, I can pay an annual fee to reduce the excess to £100 on all bookings, without paying the additional £2 per hour. Once you have finished with the car you are expected to return it to the original pick-up location.

After collecting the car, we visited nearby attractions in Dorchester and Weymouth.

Continuing the money-saving theme, I’d already visited camc.com/greatsavingsguide and discovered a list of attractions near Crossways offering member discounts. These included two-for-one entry at the Tutankhamun Exhibition, The Dinosaur Museum, The Teddy Bear Museum and The Terracotta Warriors Museum in Dorchester, as well as a 20% discount at Abbotsbury Swannery and Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens.

Although it’s not included in the Great Savings Guide, The Tank Museum at Bovington is worthy of mention and is a favourite of ours when staying at Crossways, as your ticket grants free entry on subsequent visits within the next 12 months. The beach at Weymouth is another favourite, thanks to its fine sands and an array of food and drink outlets within a few yards of the seafront. If cooking in the caravan seems too much of a chore, we often opt for fish and chips here. There’s plenty of parking nearby, so it’s the perfect spot to visit by car.

Looking at savings made over the weekend, if I include the £40 saved on my Car Club membership and the £12 saved at The Dinosaur Museum, this adds £52 to my annual savings tally. Not bad!

James Batchelor hits the road in an updated caravanning favourite

JLR, the new o cial name for Jaguar Land Rover, has launched a new ‘house of brands’ approach to its various models, with Jaguar, Range Rover, Defender and Discovery now being seen as separate ‘collections’. Here we take a closer look at the Land Rover Discovery, the traditional, family-orientated SUV so beloved by caravan owners, which was given a significant overhaul in 2021.

COMFORT

The Discovery has long been a jack-of-all-trades, excelling at everything from coping with rugged terrain to ferrying children on the school-run. The latest model, first introduced in 2017, focused on luxury more than any of its predecessors and pushed this family-friendly SUV further towards Range Rover territory.

Its smoother exterior design, plusher interior and unusually-placed rear number plate irked some critics, not least owners of the boxier previous version, but the model has proven popular –especially with caravanners.

In some ways the current fifth-generation Discovery’s place in the line-up is at odds with the Defender, which has taken many of the old Discovery 4’s strengths and wrapped them up in original Defender design cues to enormous success. JLR says it’ll reinvent the Discovery for its sixth generation and put greater distance between it and the Defender, but

until then there’s this overhauled model boasting new features to keep it feeling fresh.

T he Discovery now wears updated headlights, a tweaked grille, new rear lights and di erent front and rear bumpers, while new R-Dynamic and Metropolitan Edition cars have a slightly sportier look. The bulk of the changes are on the inside, as the already-plush Discovery has been bumped even more upmarket with baby Range Rover vibes aplenty. Our top-spec Metropolitan Edition had an attractive pale white and black colour theme with sumptuous ‘Windsor’ leather seats (20-way electrically adjustable, heated and cooling leather versions in the front), but even the entry-level ‘S’ model has a high-class feel.

A long with a newly-designed dashboard and centre console, the biggest change is the addition of JLR’s latest ‘Pivi Pro’ infotainment system. In the Discovery this is accessed via an 11.4in screen and the system itself is a considerable improvement over its predecessors, with crisp graphics, logical menus and fast processing speeds. There are too many features to mention here but the highlights include dedicated o -roading information, fabulous 360˚ cameras, the ability to fold down seats and headrests with a couple of prods of the screen, and the towing menus which allow you to deploy and stow the electric towbar, measure the noseweight and check electrics.

The electric towbar comes as part of a Towing Pack which also includes Land Rover’s signature Terrain Response 2 system, automatic headlight levelling and

Tow Assist. The latter is amazingly clever and allows you to control the direction of your caravan while reversing using the rotary dial on the centre console. It's great for fine-tuning tighter manoeuvres.

Space inside remains the same, of course, with plenty of head- and legroom front and back. The Discovery is also a full seven-seater with two seats that rise out of the boot floor (heated in our car); adults can fit in these but they’re more suitable for children and teenagers. Seats fold electrically via buttons located in the boot area or via the car’s touchscreen; fold all of them down and the boot is a cavernous 2,391 litres, although space is predictably confined to a handful of shopping bags with all seven seats in place.

DRIVING

T he previous Discovery’s range of four-cylinder and V6 engines has been replaced by brand new mild-hybrid straight-six units. There’s a P360 petrol with 355bhp and two diesels – the D250 with 248bhp and the D300 with 297bhp. The petrol is predictably smooth, but so are the diesels, and the petrol is thirsty – JLR claims just 27mpg.

T he D250 diesel would be my pick as it o ers decent enough performance with 0-62mph taking 7.7sec, and it has plenty of pulling power. Our car was the D300 and this is the one to go for if you need the torque of a diesel and the performance of the petrol, as it whips to 62mph in just 6.5sec. It’s pretty frugal too – during our two-week test I was getting 32mpg and 26mpg when towing. The 3.0-litre straight-six diesel is also amazingly refined, with very little noise or drama. It’s much smoother than the previous Discovery’s V6 diesel engines, and the mild-hybrid assistance gives vibration-free start-ups when the stop/start disengages and helps fill in some dead spots in the diesel’s torque delivery.

All cars get air suspension as standard and on smooth, undulating roads and motorways it just glides along. The Discovery struggles to smooth out

From left: foldable seats help create a a huge boot space; smooth exterior design; attractive black-andwhite colour scheme

pot-holed roads though, especially with this particular car’s 22in wheels, and it does feel very large, which isn’t helped by steering that’s rather slow, making low-speed manoeuvres feel quite cumbersome. It’s easy to place on the road thanks to the lofty elevated driving position. Of course, there is a host of o -road driving aids with suspension that can rise up, and the car can calibrate the four-wheel drive system for di erent surfaces. From grass to crawling over rocks, the Discovery can manage it all. Our car was fitted with the optional Active Locking Di erential (£1,080) and twin-speed transfer box (£310) for greater o -road ability.

TOWING

Perhaps the greatest compliment one could level at a towcar is the feeling that you aren’t pulling anything at all. While that sounds a bit pompous, the Discovery really does tow a caravan in its stride. The 3.0-litre diesel barely breaks into a sweat, even on steep hills, and the eight-speed automatic gearbox (the only ’box available) remained smooth and unflustered. The car’s air suspension keeps things nice and level too, and there was no pitching or movement from the caravan even when passing slower moving lorries on motorways. Aside from constricted over-theshoulder visibility, the Discovery is a fine towcar

VERDICT

It’s easy to see why the Discovery is loved by caravan owners – it’s just superb at everything it does. The current model is pricey, however, and its sister Defender and Range Rover models offer similar features. But, if you have the money and want a jackof-all-trades SUV, the Discovery is an excellent choice.

TECHNICAL

Rob McCabe takes a peek inside the well-designed, towcar friendly and reasonably priced Sprite Alpine 4

The days when you could describe any new entry-level caravan as ‘cheap’ have long gone, but the refreshed 2023 Sprites look like canny buys Our test of the Alpine 4 fixed-bed four-berther will see if that promise holds good.

BUILD QUALITY

The custodian of the Sprite brand since the early 1990s has been the Swift Group, which builds all its caravans using its ‘Smart’ construction technique. The impactresistant GRP shell is hung on a timber-free frame that promises complete imperviousness to moisture, backed by a 10 -year bodyshell warranty.

Our test vehicle put up a very good showing, displaying conscientious attention to detail; I found much evidence of tidy finishing-off and pin-neat joinery work. Lockers, blinds, flyscreens and bed slats were all seamless in their operation. Smart by name and by nature.

TOWING

This is where the Alpine will win a lot of friends – it’s a caravan with the sought-after fixed bed layout that can be matched to a lengthy list of potential towcars thanks to its relatively modest sub-1,300kg MTPLM. And in an era during which 8ft-wide caravans are seemingly on a quest for world domination, many caravanners will find

the Sprite’s slimline 7ft 5in width a much more userfriendly proposition for easier manoeuvring and towing.

Al-Ko’s ATC electronic trailer control system is absent from the spec sheet, but you can request it as a £475 factory-fit option when placing your order – worth the outlay if you can stretch to it.

DAYTIME

The new, subtle grey and pale blue interior colour scheme provides a bright, modern feel in the compact lounge area and, because it’s so unfussy, it’s highly unlikely to look dated a few years down the line.

If the flip-up shelf in place of a front chest might seem like a cost-cutting measure , the addition of a high-spec, Bluetooth-equipped fitted JVC stereo is anything but. There are also eight (yes, eight!) USB charging sockets throughout, while your on-board TV location is the shelf twixt bedroom and kitchen, allowing you to view from either the comfort of bed or the lounge. (There’s a mains socket in the lounge, so you could place the set upfront and run a coaxial cable to it if required .)

Considering many will use this caravan as a two-berth, storage provision is excellent. The mini-garage under the double bed is the highlight, especially as you can also get to it from outside; the spare wheel is stored here. The wardrobe is a generous size, and both under-seat lockers in the lounge have full-width opening hatches.

Front lounge converts into a large double Small but effective kitchen

It’s worth mentioning that a roof-mounted solar panel is a dealer-fit option for £275, which sounds like a no-brainer to me

NIGHT-TIME

The layout – double bed taking up most of the rear, a compact loo/shower in the corner and a wash basin/ vanity unit in the bedroom itself – may seem a bit of a throwback these days. But the toilet room can be shut off when needed and there is a palpable feeling of space around the vanity unit that boosts the credentials of the bedroom as a dressing room.

The 6ft 2in-long bed has a good-quality Duvalay mattress that gives lots of comfort and support. Little over-the-shoulder shelves will accommodate your overnight glass of water or morning cuppa. Just one negative back here: the curtain that shuts off the bedroom from the rest of the caravan was ill-fitting in this example, and not very inspiring in terms of colour

The front sofas’ upholstery pieces make up a pleasantly flat mattress to create a huge double. If this were the only bed on board, I’d be very happy with it.

KITCHEN

Okay, the hob doesn’t boast an electric hotplate and there are only three gas rings, but even when catering for a family of four in the days of yore, I don’t think I ever felt the need to press four gas rings into simultaneous service. You do get a separate oven and grill, which is certainly more of a benefit than a four-ring hob. There’s a very neatly fitted flatbed microwave and the work surface – boasting an attractive, slate-look finish – is boosted by a fold-up extension, highly beneficial at serving-up time.

WASHROOM

If you’re considering owning a Sprite Alpine 4, you’ve already decided that a washroom with a big, walk-in, separate shower cubicle is a waste of precious

caravanning real estate. Sure, you’ll have an on-board shower every now and then – and you’ll appreciate the bespoke mixer tap and the jet of water from the fat head – but the site facilities will take most of the strain.

And, actually – as already mentioned – you quite like having a vanity unit that doesn’t feel in any way hemmed in. You could indeed argue that this set-up is a very good use of space.

LIGHTING

Fair play to Swift for endowing the Alpine’s lounge with a reading light in each of the four corners – by no means a given in entry-level caravans. If you need reinforcements, the sunroof binnacle contains two more small but powerful flush-fitting lamps. You also get a touch of bling, courtesy of the above-locker ambient lighting that wends its way back over the kitchen and, on the other side, the wardrobe.

The bedroom has the warm glow of all-round ambient lighting too, plus two reading lamps serving the bed and two more lights over by the vanity unit – including one right above the big mirror. The kitchen and the loo/shower are both very well illuminated Good job all round.

VERDICT

Thoughtfully equipped and a lovelylooking vehicle inside and out (curtain aside), the Alpine 4 is a pleasure to be in. In today’s market, it’s very fine value.

BROADWAY REVIEW

Auto-Sleepers’ Broadway EL has been taking centre stage for some 17 years. Nick Harding puts its latest iteration under the spotlight

The ‘EL’ made its debut in 2006, and its winning formula means it still warrants a place in Auto-Sleepers’

Broadway line-up today.

It has a starting price of £81,200 but budget for a little more as the Premium Pack and Winter Pack are effectively default options (£2,500 and £295 respectively) – there’s yet to be a Broadway produced without them.

The Premium Pack covers alloy wheels, cab air-conditioning, cruise control, Thule awning, colour reversing camera, 80W solar panel and, the most recent upgrade, Zenec’s Z-N965 media system. The Winter Pack gives you a Truma combi heater upgrade, cab blinds, fresh and waste water tank heater blanket and wheel arch insulation.

It’s built on a Peugeot, but if you want automatic transmission, Fiat’s Ducato base and 140bhp engine are available for a £2,500 premium.

Meanwhile, free options include a full overcab set-up rather than the low-profile pod pictured, and

five soft furnishing alternatives. ‘EL’ stands for ‘end lounge’ and you certainly get a lot of that here.

BUILD QUALITY

The Broadway has always been Peugeot Boxerbased, but these days it’s on the long-wheelbase chassis-cab, which gives extra stability on the road. That 289kg payload may not seem a lot but do bear in mind this is only a two-berth and it comes pretty much fully loaded as far as kit is concerned. The coachbuilt bodywork is GRP with aluminium skirting. Other premium features include flush-fitting windows, a one-piece habitation door with window (the cab central locking extends to here, too), exterior access lockers and fixings for a bike rack on the rear panel – the latter set low for ease of use.

Fresh and waste water capacities are 102 and 71 litres respectively. As you’d expect, the water inlet and outlets, gas and electric points, etc, are on the offside. There are three-year warranties for overall manufacture as well as water ingress specifically; Peugeot offers the same timeframe for the base vehicle.

July 2023 www.camc.com 89

DRIVING

Peugeot’s latest 165bhp motor gives a noticeable pep you don’t always get with a coachbuilt motorhome. It will happily sit at UK speed limits having wasted little time getting there and – depending on individual driving styles – 30mpg-plus should be on your radar. Another bonus: the chassis is a driving licencefriendly 3,500kg.

The cab highlight is the touchscreen ‘infotainment’ unit, providing DAB radio, sat-nav, reversing camera monitor and Bluetooth.

DAYTIME

The floorplan is a long-term favourite on these shores. That end lounge really does give you so much more daytime living space than a similar-size vehicle with permanent beds.

With just two on board, you’ll want to make the most of the sprawling opportunities in a lounge like this, with its two corner head pads and four scatter cushions. The windows to three sides are large enough for generous views out and come with cassette blinds and flyscreens, plus there’s a large rooflight overhead. All the fittings are in place to plug in the free-standing TV – an Avtex smart model with 19.5in screen, complete with soundbar – at a suitable level on the nearside.

The foam-filled seating is nice and firm, and there’s a particularly luxurious feel to the ‘Vogue Pebble’ upholstery you can see here. You also get a choice of tables – a free-stander for meals and a singlepedestal leg unit for more occasional use.

NIGHT-TIME

A huge double (7ft 3in x 6ft 2in) or twin single beds (6ft 2in x 2ft 4in) – it’s your decision. It’s certainly a nice choice to have, and either option is relatively easy to make up. Personally, I do find the mattress a bit firm – you might feel a topper is in order.

Night-time illumination includes paddle lights on rails – again on three sides so you can direct light wherever you want it – as well as plenty of ceiling downlighters. All are individually switched. Lined curtains complement the blinds, ensuring a good level of night-time blackout.

Heating is courtesy of Truma’s Combi 6 system, using mains and/or gas, with iNet as standard, meaning you can operate it all remotely.

KITCHEN

The Broadway kitchen contains a cooker (dual-fuel hob, separate oven and grill) and a microwave oven that is housed directly over the sink and its add-on drainer. Worktop space is generous and includes a

flap that folds down across the corridor just before the cab as well as a more conventional flip-up extension on the left of the kitchen unit.

Storage includes a trio of drawers (one for cutlery) and lockers of various sizes, with a waste bin close to hand in the habitation door.

Other fittings range from an extractor unit and a pull-up gang of three mains sockets, to a cutlery drainer that fixes to the sink’s lid when it’s in its open position. Why, there’s even a kitchen roll holder – and a safe.

A ny criticisms? The single locker over the hob is home to two bottle-holders and four small wine glasses, but the latter store at the very back and could be somewhat inaccessible.

Across the corridor is a Thetford slimline fridge with freezer (total capacity is 142 litres) and a useful slide-out section for keeping bottles upright in its base. The locker over the fridge houses the on-board Wi-Fi hub and solar panel controller.

WASHROOM

Like the kitchen, you won’t find the washroom wanting. First impressions may suggest a lack of space, but then you realise that the wall housing the handbasin and a high-level locker with mirrored doors actually swings round to create a shower cubicle.

The shower is on a riser bar and there’s an extending section of clothes line, as well as a double locker and

You can insure this motorhome with the Club for £458.29 per year. Please see camc.com/ insurance or call 0345 504 0334 for further details.

some open shelving over the Thetford swivel-bowl toilet. Toilet roll and towel holders, plus toothbrush mug, haven’t been forgotten. All that’s missing is a window (there’s no space for one) – a small rooflight suffices for ventilation.

Step out of the washroom and immediately to your side is the wardrobe – it’s not the biggest, and the free-standing table and pedestal leg stowed here further diminish the available space.

DETAILS

Autosleepers has thought of everything, from the opening sunroof over the cab to the blinds for the cab windows, to the phone charger pad with two USB ports. A Sargent Cat 6/S7 tracker is pre-fitted –annual subscriptions start at £100.

There’s a fire extinguisher attached to the base of the driver’s seat. Carbon monoxide and smoke alarms are also on board. An electric step and big grab handle are helpful aids at the habitation door.

A full complement of cutlery and a 12-piece crockery set complete the many, many details.

VERDICT

You’ll buy this motorhome for its two-person set-up, its large lounge, its generous specification and its Auto-Sleeper pedigree. Just to prove its enduring qualities, the Broadway EL scooped top prize in its class –Two-Berth Coachbuilt Motorhomes Over 6m – in the Club’s 2023 Motorhome and Campervan Design Awards.

SMALL TALK

Motorhomers will be familiar with the situation. You’ve settled in on site but want to head off to an attraction for the day, or perhaps pop to the supermarket. Bikes or public transport are sometimes options but often you’ll need your main vehicle to get out and about. Having to unhook the electrics and constantly check everything is stowed safely can be tiresome – not to mention the possibility of height restrictions and compact parking spaces during your day out. As a result, some owners of larger motorhomes like to tow a small ‘support’ car with them to site.

TOWBARS

Whether you decide to tow a car using a trailer or an A-Frame (a frame – shaped like an ‘A’ – which is attached to the front of the car), your motorhome will need:

a towbar, and

a socket that is wired-up to power the road lights on the trailer

Fitting a towbar to a motorhome can be quite complicated. The make, model and year of the motorhome will determine the type and method of fitting. For motorhomes registered in 2012 and thereafter, it is mandatory to have a ‘Type Approved’

towbar fitted. Motorhomes registered before this date may not have a Type Approved towbar available –instead look for one which is made to British Standard BS AU 114 or International Standard ISO 3853.

Before purchasing a motorhome, it is worth checking that it can be fitted with a towbar. A quick look underneath the rear section will identify whether there are any possible obstructions (such as water tanks, spare wheels, waste pipes, etc). If your secondhand motorhome came with a towbar fitted, check (or have it checked) carefully. The Club has seen cases of towbars being fitted which are only strong enough to support a cycle carrier, neglecting strengthening parts needed to cope with the loads of towing a trailer or car.

If you are unsure and want a professional opinion, consider arranging an appointment with a towbar specialist. For help choosing a well-qualified installer, the National Trailer and Towing Association (NTTA) has established a national list of ‘Quality Secured Accredited Towbar Centres’. These are found on the NTTA website (ntta.co.uk) and each centre is scrutinised annually.

A-FRAMES, TRAILERS, BRAKES AND THE LAW

If you are towing a car (for example with an A-frame) and the car’s wheels are in direct contact with the road,

A small, motorhome-towed ‘support’ car can give you extra flexibility during your trips. Sammy Faircloth offers some advice to consider before you hitch up

PRACTICAL TOWING
Many car parks have height restriction barriers – a hindrance to motorhomes Braked trailers and A-frames must be fitted with a breakaway cable

the relevant legislation is the same as that applicable to trailers. And so, like any laden trailer weighing over 750kg (ie trailer plus its load), it must meet the legal requirements of a trailer, including road lights, triangular reflectors, and brakes which operate correctly and efficiently.

Also note that braked trailers and A-frames alike must be fitted with a breakaway cable.

The legality of towing a car in the UK using an A-frame has been confirmed by the Government, but the A-frame in conjunction with the car must meet the legal requirements to be a trailer. However, you might get pulled over elsewhere – A-frames are not accepted in most European countries, for example. If necessary, check with the authorities of the countries that you are intending to visit before embarking on your tour.

TRAILERS

Arguments for:

A braked trailer in good working order is universally acceptable both at home and abroad.

It can often be used for transporting other goods instead of just cars.

After you’ve practised the skills of manoeuvring, a well-designed trailer isn’t hard to reverse.

Arguments against:

A trailer takes up storage space both at home and on campsites.

Trailers are stolen surprisingly often, so

security devices are essential.

Unless it has an elevating flat base, a trailer needs ramps for loading the car. It can take time to secure a car safely with ropes and straps.

You need to check noseweight to ensure the outfit is stable and to confirm that the towbar isn’t being overloaded.

A trailer should be equipped with a spare wheel and tyre.

A-FRAMES

Arguments for:

The frame is easy to store both at home and on sites.

When dropping off a motorhome for service or repairs, a support car brought on an A-frame means you can leave the van and quickly get home.

Arguments against:

Apart from a metre or so, you can seldom readily reverse a car when it’s coupled to an A-frame. The car will inevitably start to turn, but as it is very close behind the motorhome and narrower than it, by the time you can see it is out of line, it will be too late to apply a steering correction. A reversing camera will help, but reversing a towed car remains a serious challenge, even if the brake actuating system for the A-frame is sophisticated enough to prevent the car’s brakes coming on.

While towing with an A-frame in the UK is legal as long as the set-up meets the legal

requirements for a trailer, A-frames are widely illegal in other European countries. Carrying out a professional, robust and safe modification to a car in readiness for coupling to an A-frame is likely to take a day and is potentially costly.

Coupling up an A-frame can be a tricky, hands-on job, and potentially timeconsuming.

Several safety-critical jobs are involved, so coupling must be done with methodical care.

Not all cars are suitable for A-frame towing. Clearly they must be light enough, but some are inherently unsuitable (eg some autos or electric models). Good A-frame suppliers can advise on suitable models.

It’s not just cars that can be towed by motorhomes. Some people tow a boat; motorsport enthusiasts often use box trailers; motorbike connoisseurs use specialised trailers. And, of course, some larger motorhomes feature an onboard garage!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Before proceeding, you must check the weight data of your motorhome and understand towing restrictions relating to your motorhome’s ‘gross train weight’ limit. You must also go to a weighbridge to get factual weight information.

Do some research before spending money and talk to others who have similar set-ups before considering towing with your own motorhome.

TAIL LIGHTS

Your observations on the fun and unusual world of touring

Home to roost

This caravan nest box has five perches... so does it count as a Cer-feather-cated Location? The picture is from Melvyn and Lesley Clipstone, who say: “The local blue tits made short work of checking it out and it seems to have ticked all their boxes as they busily make trips back and forth for nesting materials. Let’s hope they enjoy their ‘holiday’ in my caravan and we get to see another family fledge.”

CORONATION FUN

You may have seen our special spread of pictures of site activities held during the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla (pages 10-11), but here are two more photos that seemed like a good fit for Tail Lights. Kirsten Mitchell enjoyed celebrating at Cirencester Park Club Campsite and created a mini procession (above), while Jane Holtom shared a picture of Arthur the Scarecrow, entered by Cornish campsite Carnon Downs into the local village’s Coronation scarecrow competition.

Two-up, two-down

Norman and Pamela Monaghan came across this ‘des res’ at a campsite in the Cairngorms National Park. Apparently it belongs to a family from Holland who were enjoying a few home comforts while touring the UK.

TOURING WITH ZEAL

Peter Dixon shared two pictures of unusual outfits he spotted on New Zealand’s South Island. Peter came across the motorhome complete with garden shed and sun deck in Picton, while the fetching cream two-piece was turning heads in Kaikoura.

Horn of plenty

The south-west corner of Scotland combines some of the prettiest views and quietest roads that a cyclist can hope to meet. T he world seems slower on the Machars peninsula in Dumfries and Galloway, to the point that A-roads feel like B-roads and B-roads like unclassified roads.

This route starts at the Club site in Garlieston, a coastal village with a small fleet of lobster fishing boats and an important connection to the 1944 ‘Operation Overlord’ D-Day landings in Normandy. To protect the invading Allied troops, the military designed artificial harbours that it could tow across to France and anchor at the landing beaches. Garlieston Harbour was selected as one of the secret test sites for these ‘Mulberry’ harbours, because its coastline and tides were similar to northern France, and even today the concrete remains of one of the prototypes are visible in Garlieston bay at low tide.

Heading due south, the ride continues to Isle of Whithorn, which turns out not to be a real island, but a village with a Romantic, end-of-the-world feel. Arriving in the village the route turns right opposite the harbour, but a diversion left is well worthwhile to visit the roofless ruins of St Ninian’s Chapel, just a short walk over a grassy field. An alternative walk from the same

spot heads to the whitewashed and vertically-challenged Isle of Whithorn Tower, a lighthouse on the most southerly point of the headland from where you can see the mountains of the Lake District and the Isle of Man on a clear day.

Close by in Isle of Whithorn is the Steam Packet Inn, which serves tea and coffee all day, and boasts its own Five Kingdoms microbrewery.

The return leg of the ride heads inland and passes through Whithorn, a historic village whose priory was home to one of the first Christian communities in Scotland. It developed around the shrine of 5th century St Ninian, who is said to have died and been buried at Whithorn. What remains of the priory is currently undergoing renovation, but there is a small museum.

Peaceful roads, flanked by gorse and fields of local Belted Galloway cattle, then lead back to the Club site.

DIRECTIONS

From the gate of the Club site (on the reception side of the road) turn right along the seafront, and in 300m turn left along Mill Road. Continue for 1km to a T-junction.
