FAMILY Connections September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Families, caregivers, charities and research groups across the United States observe September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In the U.S., 15,780 children under the age of 21 are diagnosed with cancer every year; approximately 1/4 of them will not survive the disease. A diagnosis turns the lives of the entire family upside down. The objective of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is to put a spotlight on the types of cancer that largely affect children, survivorship issues, and — importantly — to help raise funds for research and family support organizations.

Every day, there are almost 700 new cases of childhood cancer around the world.
Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children in the United States.
Childhood cancer treatment is no longer just chemotherapy and radiation.
With better therapies, 80% of U.S. childhood cancer patients become survivors.
A cure is not enough. Surviving childhood cancer brings its own set of complications.
Families often have to travel for cancer treatment.
Caregivers can suffer from PTSD.
Siblings are also effected.
Only 4% of federal cancer research funding goes to pediatric cancer.

Our mission is to provide a community of healing, hope, and light throughout the life-long journey of childhood cancer. We advocate, we educate, we build partnerships, and we foster solidarity for all families experiencing cancer.

Candlelighters Family Camp Camp Harlow 3850 County Farm Rd Eugene, OR 97408 Every year since 1995 during Labor Day weekend, we have hosted Candlelighters Family Camp for Candlelighters family members in Eugene, OR.
It is an incredible three days filled with laughter, play, connecting, love and healing. Our families come together and get the opportunity to experience the magic of Family Camp while horseback riding, zip lining, swimming, riding go karts and bumper boats, attending campfires, and so much more! It is a great weekend for families to come and create memories.

Pumpkin Patch and possibly meet some of the best pilots in the air show industry! Each family will be allowed a maximum of two passes – one for the special needs guest and one for a caretaker or chaperone, Candlelighters has only 10 free passes and they are first come, first serve. The service project meeting will focus on volunteerism and building leadership skills in a relaxed and fun environment. The Luminaries will also be selecting the October Halloween-themed social outing.

Come and join us at the Pumpkin Patch!! We will be hosting a fun day for Candlelighters Families at Lee Farms in Tualatin. There are lots of fun activities to do, baby animals to see, and yummy treats to try!
Included: An activity bracelet and a voucher for a pumpkin for each household. Check in will be at 10:00 am and will be done at 11:30 am, so make sure you check in within that time frame or we will not be able to get you an activity bracelet and voucher. Look for the Candlelighters check-in outside of the admissions gate! This will be their 4th year of fundraising for us. There will be lots of fun activities going on including a free barbecue. Motorcycles will be on display, there will be a raffle, and even tattoo and facial hair competitions! It is a fun afternoon for our families. Please come and support their efforts to raise money for our activities throughout the year.

CANDLELIGHTERS STAFF with a diagnosis
of cancer, handling the daily routine of school can seem like just one more challenge. Yet for school-age children taking the time to think through how to approach school-related issues both during–and after–treatment will play a critical role in ensuring your child’s academic success. Whether your child can go to school intermittently during treatment or whether treatment has required a long absence from school, returning to school can be emotionally challenging for many parents who face serious concerns about the potential for illness, whether their child has the physical or emotional stamina to cope with a long school day, and whether they will face teasing from uninformed peers. Yet, maintaining a regular school routine can offer your child, and your family, emotional stability and regularity, and will help reassure your child that they have a future that is bright and strong. Communication is the key to your child’s educational success. Opening a dialogue with educators will ensure your child’s educational success. The first step is alerting the school about your child’s diagnosis and treatment plan. This will enable them to work with you to ensure that your child does not fall behind academically during treatment and keep the school informed about potential limitations that treatment places on their ability to complete certain types of activities. Doernbecher and Randall Children’s Hospitals also offer academic support for children to complete assignments while in extended hospital stays.
