Teen Advisory Council Meeting June 2018 Date, Time and Location TBD Are you a teen living in the PDX region? Do you want to be involved with community service while forming social connections with other Candlelighters teens? If so, the Teen Advisory Council is just the place for you! The teen group meets monthly with fun social outings every other month! In addition to fun outings, we will also be planning service projects to give back to our community while learning important leadership skills along the way. Your active participation in this group will benefit you in several ways: 1. You will get to meet other teens who have been through a cancer diagnosis or their teen siblings, 2. You will get to learn leadership skills and how to plan and implement service projects which looks great on your college application! This groups is open to any Candelighters teen (including teen siblings) aged 13-19 years old. Candlelighters Teen Program: Support, Service Learning and Leadership
In 2016
Candlelighters reinvigorated its teen program, forming a Teen Advisory Council and scheduling social outings for teens living in the Portland area. The teens participated in several social outings, including attending Blazers games and building teamwork through an escape room experience. The idea behind the teen program was to create spaces where teens diagnosed with cancer and their teen siblings could connect with one another while helping to provide feedback on how to help Candlelighters programs be more inclusive and welcoming for teens. The first service project the teens helped with was creating teen kits for Doernbecher Hospital. These kits would complement Candlelighters Bedside Buddies program; instead of a teddy bear waiting a teen who was being admitted to in-patient treatment, teens would get an age appropriate kit to help them feel more comfortable in the hospital. Fast forward to February of this year when a group of teens got together for a social outing with Candlelighters staff and volunteers.

While the teens were excited to have the opportunity for another fun outing, many at movie night expressed a desire to do more for teens affected by a pediatric cancer diagnosis. They wanted to give back to the community through service projects and mentorship opportunities, much like when they helped develop teen kits. As the new Director of Strategic Programming and Evaluation, I took this feedback seriously and arranged a meeting with teens on April 7th. This meeting was open to any teen living in the Portland area and included teen siblings. Prior to the meeting, I re-established goals for the group, including increasing social-emotional well-being and decreasing social isolation by engaging teens in leadership development and service learning to increase self-sufficiency of teens affected by childhood cancer. I also want to tie in the teen program to other programs offered by Candlelighters, whether that is through our scholarship program or by finding leadership opportunities during Family Camp. Ultimately, though, this program is for the teens and

CANDLELIGHTERS should incorporate the voices of those teens. I want them to decide what their program should look like, how it should run and what they want out of it. My goal was to reach 10 teens through the Teen Advisory Council and utilize meetings to teach leadership and service learning while helping teens form a sense of community. We surpassed that goal when 14 teens expressed interest in being a part of the group. Of those teens, 8 were able to make that first meeting. During the meeting, teens brainstormed ways to improve programming for teens, with many expressing the need to find ways to make hospitals more inviting for teens (both in-patient and outpatient clinics). They spent 2 hours getting to know one another and discussing possible service projects, such as mentorship during Family Activities to younger youth, fundraising for teen kits, creating social media pages that would help teens better connect with each other and being a teen mentor to newly diagnosed teens. The teens also spent part of their time exploring a leadership topic, active listening. Through this workshop, teens were able to share with each other about a time when they had something to say and no one would listen and how that made them feel. They also shared about a time when they felt really heard and listened to and how that felt. They learned through these exercises not only how to be great active listeners but also how to support each other, through empathy and acceptance. They took opportunities to meet teens in the group they did not know and through this simple activity, connected more deeply with group members.

I would be remiss if I did not mention the relationships that were started amongst the parents during this April meeting. It seemed to organically happen as the parents sat in the lobby of the Candlelighters office during the teen meeting. Afterwards, some of the parents expressed an interest in having opportunities to discuss the challenges families face dealing with a cancer diagnosis, how to respond proactively to their teens when they experience challenges, and finding ways to connect with other parents through activities designated for teens. Candlelighters will find ways to make these connections happen, because after all, we are focused on whole family support. So, while the teen program is geared towards our teens, it is designed to support the entire family. In the coming months, we will have opportunities for our teens to get more involved. I hope that if you are reading this and you are a teen or you are a parent of a teen, that you will want to join us in some of these opportunities. While the group decided monthly activities are a good start to forming a closer community of support, they asked to make the group open and flexible. That means, if you cannot make a meeting or two, that’s okay. You are still invited to join us in strengthening our teen program.

Camp Millennium Roseburg, OR Camp application is open! Camp Millennium is a free summer camp for children dealing with a cancer diagnosis. This year’s theme is Island Paradise!! It is a time for them to be themselves and to share in a variety of summer camp activities, such as hiking, fishing, archery, swimming, arts and crafts, horseback riding, and many other surprises. The goal of this week-long adventure is to provide these children with a camping experience that can be extended into their everyday lives.
