Candlelighters For Children With Cancer publishes CandlelightersConnections four times a year to provide news and other information to our childhood cancer community in Oregon and SW Washington.
“We are so blessed to be part of the Candlelighters family! When we received Erin’s cancer diagnosis, we were overwhelmed with worry and fear. Our family and friends were wonderful, but Erin felt very alone. Every day brought new, more difficult challenges. It was so hard watching our bubbly, energetic girl struggling through treatment valiantly fighting to be brave. Candlelighters provided light during those dark days. With activities that embrace not just the child fighting cancer, but the whole family, we felt so much support and understanding! We didn’t feel so alone anymore. Programs like Family Camp, the Holiday Party and the Teen Luminaries group, introduced us to new friends and gave us hope and encouragement to face the days ahead”, says Kris. “Childhood cancer affects not only the child facing the disease, but the rest of the family too. The day-to-day demands of treatment, tests and hospital visits are scary and exhausting for everyone. Candlelighters is wonderful and unique, because they understand that ALL members of the family - cancer patient, parents and siblings - need support. These worries and concerns don’t just go away the minute treatment ends. Healing from the trauma of cancer is different for everyone and takes time. By supporting families and including them in activities

post treatment, Candlelighters gives families the time they need to recover and find their strength again”, says Kris. One of Erin’s favorite activities is being part of the Candlelighters Teen Luminaries group. “I enjoy being in the Luminaries because I get to work with other kids my age going through similar challenges. We understand each other and know our cancer doesn’t define us. I love how we put aside our own problems and help the community together.”

It was a wonderful evening featuring over 300 attendees, mouth-watering dining, local wine and beer, and fabulous silent and live auctions. Ride For A Child 2018 An
extraordinary group of cyclists rode in Cycle Oregon’s Classic raising funds and awareness for Candlelighters. RFAC was also represented internationally at the Camino de Santiago in Spain! Together, they have raised over $200,000 for Candlelighters programs and services and raised awareness to over 900 donors. Congratulations to Team Maggie, Team Sawyer, Team Jillie, Team Otto, and Team McKayla for another amazing year! During Ride For A Child, cyclists, honored children, their families, and staff gather together for the Ride Out. During the Ride Out Honored Children get to ride alongside RFAC cyclists for a short distance, share a meal, and celebrate the end of summer together. Cyclists and Honored Children exchange gifts and stories and great times were had by all. “An incredible week riding 400 miles in beautiful eastern Oregon! A wonderful pleasure

Every day during Cycle Oregon they set up and break down camp, transport equipment to and from campsites, handle laundry, and set up snacks and libations, all while our massage therapists ease aching bodies to prepare for the next day’s ride. When Ride For A Child was started by Dick Hartung 17 years ago, his vision has translated into more than 2 million raised since its inception.

2018 Holiday Programs
H
olidays with the Candlelighters community is a big deal with four Chapter’s Holiday Parties, Candy Cane Lane for our lowincome families, Time of Remembrance for our bereaved families, and of course Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner at the hospital. The holidays can be a difficult time for childhood cancer families and we do our part to help foster community and alleviate stress. We had over 700 family members attend holiday parties across the state. Our families got to come together and celebrate with presents, food, games, and of course Mr. and Mrs. Clause! A special thank you to the Kruse Way Rotary Club, Eugene Elks Lodge, Ashland Elks Lodge, and the hundreds of volunteers for making our holidays parties so special! Candy Cane Lane 2018 was bigger and better than ever! We connected 69 financially distressed families with donors to purchase holiday presents for 217 children! We are overwhelmed with our amazing donors and 60 volunteers that made this event happen. In addition to making sure presents

were under the tree, we had a huge party with crafts, BBQ, treats, and hugs from Santa himself! A longstanding Candlelighters tradition is honoring the children we’ve lost to cancer. It was a pleasure joining our bereaved families for our annual Time of Remembrance. Families came together and shared a meal, enjoyed piano from Heidi Bruno, create crafts in memory of their loved ones, and listen to our program led by Monique Mitchell from The Dougy Center. Candlelighters ensures that families staying at the hospital still get to enjoy a traditional holiday meal. A special thank you our dinner sponsors: Bon Appetit at the University of Portland for Thanksgiving dinner and Market of Choice for Christmas Eve dinner.

Since 1977, Candlelighters has supported more than 85,000 family members battling pediatric cancer by fostering a community of support through year-round opportunities. Candlelighters offers families financial support, family support and in-hospital support programming that are inclusive of all family members.

Candlelighters provides support for the whole family battling pediatric cancer every step of the way from diagnosis through treatment and beyond.
Our services are free and at no time is anyone turned away. Our goals are to lessen isolation, decrease depression and create community to offer quality of life to every member of the family. Financial Support programs help ease the financial burden that often comes with a cancer diagnosis by providing financial assistance, college tuition, or by providing gifts during the holidays.

We were able to connect financially distressed Candlelighters families with donors to purchase holiday presents for every child in the family. Because of you, 69 families totaling 217 children had plenty of presents under the tree! We were so overwhelmed with the amazing outpouring of support that made this event happen

very year, Candlelighters elects new officers and welcomes new board members to ensure Candlelighters continues to support families battling childhood cancer. At the same time, several board members will end their time with Candlelighters. However, their legacy of support, commitment and passion for the mission continues. We thank and honor, Matt Filkins, who served three years as a Candlelighters board member and treasurer. Thank you Matt for ensuring Candlelighters fiscal stability and strength so that Candlelighters can continue its work to develop and enhance family focused programming. Brian Maher, who was able to bring his own personal experience to the board. His daughter, Tilly, battled Leukemia and is now in remission. Brian’s support the last three years has helped Candlelighters build more solid operational footing. Lissa Pocze, NP, for being part of the board for nearly two years. Her ability and willingness to provide the clinical perspective for Candlelighters helped ensure that programming was as impactful as possible.
