Family That Shines: Epkarian Family
as far northeast as Pendleton, Bend, Redmond, Sisters and Sunriver, so families like Karrah’s can find community no matter where they live. While Karrah still receives periodic treatment and will do so until May of 2018, she is celebrating remission. She was one of the 2017 Honored Children that cyclists supported during Ride For A Child, one of Candlelighters signature fundraisers. As an Honored Child she had a team of cyclists that sent her letters and cards during their months of training and her determination and story inspired the team. For the cyclists and Karrah, it was a chance to build a relationship that can last years after the ride ends. Karrah’s favorite family activity is the snowmobile rides; while mom would say that the rest of the family loves Candlelighters Family Camp. Candlelighters was a saving grace the whole family could turn to during the diagnosis and months of treatment. “Candlelighters
with our mortgage, we received emergency funds. And, when we needed to drive back and forth from Eugene to Portland for Karrah’s treatment, Candlelighters helped pay for our gas.” Candlelighters supports families throughout the state of Oregon and SW Washington. Making Memories and So Much More Candlelighters For Children With Cancer celebrated 40 years of serving families battling pediatric cancer at this year’s annual Candlelighters Family Camp. Since 1995, families battling pediatric cancer have an opportunity to come together every Labor Day weekend and spend an incredible three days filled with laughter, play, connecting, love and healing. This year, 360+ family members went to Camp Harlow in Eugene and spent the weekend horseback riding, zip lining, swimming, riding go karts, throwing water balloons, and so much

more! Attendance is 100% free of charge ensuring that all families who are interested in having the Family Camp experience can participate regardless of socioeconomic status. The weekend was filled with laughter and comradery. Even when the fires raging across the state caused the smoky air, families were resilient and made the best of it! A special shout out to returning families for keeping Camp special, and to those first-time families, thank you for being part of an amazing weekend. We are already counting down the days until next year’s camp!

2017 Ride For A Child In 2017, 60 cyclists raised $202,250 from 972 donors making 2017 Ride For A Child one of the most successful fundraising campaigns in Candlelighters For Children With Cancer’s 40 year history! Ride For A Child (RFAC) is a unique fundraising event. Small groups of cyclists are partnered with an Honored Child (a child who has cancer or had cancer) who serves as inspiration to the team while they train for Cycle Oregon, a 400+ mile cycling event and fundraiser to support Candlelighter’s mission. Team members connect with their honored child and family during the summer training season at organized events and often keep in touch through postcards and letters as well. Then, during Cycle Oregon, held every year in September, the team, honored children and their families
reunite for a “Ride Out,” a short bicycle ride together followed by a meal, trophy presentation to the children, and lots of socializing.
Cycle Oregon was forced to cancel this year’s event due to wildfires raging throughout Central Oregon in an effort to protect the health and safety of the cyclists. However, the cancellation didn’t stop this year’s crew from gathering for a Ride Out. On September 30th, team members gathered at Champoeg Park, south of Portland, and held all the usual activities despite the cold and soggy weather. Honored children rode bikes and scooters with the team, enjoyed a taco bar, and received their “trophies.” If success is measured by smiles and fun, this one would be off the charts.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: Kruse Way Rotary Club Kruse Way Rotary was chartered in May 1988 with 38 energetic members from various occupations and backgrounds. This year will be their 30th year hosting the Candlelighters Holiday Party! “The holiday party is for kids of all ages, including parents and siblings, who look forward to it every year! Nicole and Emme Ek, one of our teen advisors, have come to the holiday party for several years and say they wouldn’t miss it! There’s something for everyone. We love it and look forward to it every year!” Kruse Way Rotary hosts an

annual fundraiser called the Rotary Sounds Concert, to provide the annual Holiday Party with Santa and Mrs. Claus, dinner, holiday presents, musical performers, face painting, temporary tattoos, balloon animals, bouncing houses, and the very popular Reptile Man. Kruse Way Rotary began working with Candlelighters because they had two members who lost a child to cancer that benefitted from Candlelighters programs and services. They also
fundraise and support High School Scholarships for students whose parent(s) work in the Kruse Way Corridor, International Youth Exchange Students from Taiwan at Lakeridge High School, Patrick’s Children Orphanage in Uganda, Transitional Youth Program for at-risk and homeless kids, Junior Achievement Biztown, and are a Cub Scout Sponsor. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Ann Hackman Ann was introduced to Candlelighters in 2011 when her son Cole was diagnosed with Wilm’s Tumor and a Bedside Buddy was placed on his hospital bed at Doernbecher. During a particularly difficult stay, Cole said to me “Mom, I want to start raising money again to buy stuffies. There are kids here sicker than I am.” Thus began Cole’s Furry Friend Fund and Ann’s volunteering with Candlelighters. Ann also began fundraisers to stock the Snack Cart, coordinated activities for the Portland Chapter, volunteer recruitment, advocacy, serving on our Harvest of Hope Committee, and introducing new board member Cory Connors to Candlelighters. Cole was also a 2014 Ride For A Child Honored Child! Ann lives in SW Washington with her husband Tim, daughter Maggie, and son Cole where compassion is major family value. “In 2011 when Cole was diagnosed, we were terrified and felt very alone. No one outside of the “cancer kid” family could have any understanding for a child being diagnosed. I believe that the support offered by
Cole’s first 2011 Candlelighter’s Bedside Buddy, Scratchy, whom he sleeps with every night. Cole’s was a Candlelighter’s RFAC Honored Child in 2014.
Candlelighters is vital to a family’s success and needs to be lauded and applauded. Many families put their life on hold – making bill paying difficult. Education secondary. Where does a family stay when in crisis? Where do they get meals? How do they get gas for their car to go to treatment? Candlelighters helps with all of these issues and volunteers make all of this possible. We have been so enlightened by Candlelighters – it is the

least we can do to give back to other families so they may experience the same.” As cancer parents, we need to help organizations that are imperative to the well-being of our families. It goes beyond a duty – it is a privilege to represent these kids at the behest of the organization. We must share our story and our knowledge with others so that they do not have to take the same journey we did.

FUNDRAISER SPOTLIGHT: Tay’s Tribe Coin Drive In honor of their son Tavayis, Randi & Shanai reached out to friends and family asking them to support a coin drive for Candlelighters during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. CANDLELIGHTERS CHAPTERS’ NEWS Portland Chapter Candy Cane Lane Families working through a pediatric cancer journey have enough to worry about including the financial burden of cancer treatment. The holidays should be a joyous time for families, and this program is one of the ways Candlelighters helps. Families send us their children’s holiday wish list (including siblings
too!) and we match each child with an amazing donor who fills that wish list. Then, during the month of December, we gather the families and hold a special celebration. Candy Cane Lane celebration includes fun crafts, goodies and peppermint milkshakes, a meet and greet with Santa, and music and games
for all of our families that have participated! This year, Candlelighters matched over 160 kids with generous donors to get their Christmas list filled. Donors go above and beyond to make the holidays special for each family. We are grateful to all of the businesses and individuals who help make the holidays special

Mid-Willamette Valley Chapter families had a memorable day of horseback riding, learning to rope, face painting, photo booths and more! Most importantly, our families were able to spend an afternoon together and just be “normal” for the day.

Central Oregon Chapter Civil War – Odell Lake Fishing Event
What a great weekend at Odell Lake with Candlelighters Central Oregon Chapter for our annual Civil War Event! Fishing captains from all over took 11 families out EARLY Saturday morning for fishing! Over all 250 fish were caught!!! A HUGE thank you to our boat captains and volunteers, Foster Family, Walters Family, Shelter Cove Resort, LaPaine Lyons Club, Cheerleaders Grill and our donors that make this family activity so special! Then to put icing on the cake Benny Beaver and Puddles the Duck joined us for breakfast and sent us off Sunday morning!!

Bartz Legacy Gift We’d like to give a heartfelt thank you to the late Muriel Bartz for her amazing $55,000 gift to Candlelighters. Muriel became involved with Candlelighters after learning her caretaker, Wendy Stoneking, had a son, Jake, battling Wayne and Muriel Bartz childhood cancer. Even though Jake lost his battle, he Candlelighters programs and services are inspired Muriel to see how impactful to the WHOLE family. From the very beginning, in 1977 when five families came together to start a group that would support the WHOLE family, it was the hope that families would find support in each other when treatments and prognoses were scary. Today, childhood cancer treatments are better, yet, the Candlelighters community continues to be essential. Our mission of providing a community of support for all family members offers improved quality of life through all stages of cancer: diagnosis, treatment, remission, late-effects and beyond.
