Otto
Stuckman is a 5 year old who is described as hilarious, inquisitive, bright and witty, very loving, and vivacious. All characteristics that make him the incredible cancer fighting superhero he is. His energy, spark, and bright
shiny smile would never lead you to believe that he is currently fighting stage IV Neuroblastoma. In January of 2016, life changed for the Stuckman-Baker family. Dad, Brandon, Mom, Emily, and Stepdad, Thomas, all had to

figure out a new normal. Emily says: “When Otto was diagnosed, we were all devastated. It was incredibly frightening to think that our only child was fighting for his life just a few short weeks after he was happily enjoying the holiday season. I have given up my full-time job to be Otto’s primary caregiver, and we have had to make some changes so that we can be ready to go at a moment’s notice in the event that he becomes ill between chemo cycles. It has also changed things in interesting ways that are positive for Otto; because of his intensive care needs, we have become more of a blended family.” After completing seven rounds of chemotherapy and undergoing two surgeries, Otto is still in the middle of his pediatric oncology journey. There are several more types of treatment on the horizon for Otto including intravenous radiation therapy, a stem cell transplant, and further radiation and antibody therapy. However, if all goes well, Otto should be finished with treatment the summer of 2017. Here at Candlelighters, we love seeing Otto and family enjoying dinners at Doernbecher together, and can’t wait for Fridays to see

which snack Otto will snag off the Snack Cart. But most importantly, the strength of this family and true resilience and bravery has shown us that cancer truly won’t win. We could not agree more with what Otto’s mom, Emily said: “We hope for Otto to come through this journey with the same sunny personality and zest for life that has always been a hallmark of who he is as a person. Otto is a fighter and we stay positive with him. He has already undergone so much and has been so brave. He takes on each challenge with determination and a cheerful disposition.” Keep fighting, Otto!

When he isn’t busy chasing his three kids from one event to another, he enjoys spending time with his family, skiing, boating and cooking. These days he handles Strategic Projects and Ben Tallman is a Serial Technology focuses on Information ManageEntrepreneur, who began training ment for Apigee Corporation. Relay for Life
The Relay for Life was earlier this year so we missed some families, but those that were there had a great time. Once again, our families were treated to a pizza dinner courtesy of Delta Delta Delta sorority’s alumnae group. They have supported us for years at the Relay. to the kids delight, we were joined at the Survivors Lap by many Super Heroes. The kids were cheered and applauded as they proudly carried our banner around the track. Families made an evening of it as there was much going on at the Relay. A huge thank you to Bert Harrison and his son LB for helping set up our site at the Relay. As always, our site highlighted our kids, with a lot of people stopping by to take a look.

Fishing on the McKenzie River For the 5th year, many of our kids got to spend a day on the McKenzie River fishing. The day began with a warm breakfast, prepared by the Northwest Steelheaders. They got up before the sun to be sure we had a good breakfast before spending the day on the river. Again this year, athletes from the University of Oregon’s “O Heroes” program and Oregon State University players from the “Beyond Football” program were there to spend their day with the kids! Any rivalry between the two schools was set-aside for this day. For the athletes, this day was never about them, it was all about the kids, and they made sure the kids knew that. They really spent time getting to know the kids and their story. Thanks goes out to the many athletes from OSU, representing football, baseball, women’s rowing, swimming and basketball. From the UO, we had athletes representing football, women’s basketball and soccer. Kudos to these student/athletes for being some of the classiest young people I know and really making this all about our kids! Each child was paired up with their very special athlete and an expert

river guide from the McKenzie River Guides Association. This year we had guides from outside the organization also join us on the river. These guides donated their time and expertise to ensure each child was safe, along with sharing their tips for catching fish. Once in the drift boats, we were off and it didn’t take long to get the lines in the water! It took 20 boats to carry us all down the river. While it was fun to spend time on the river, catching fish delighted the kids. It became a bit of a competition by the end of the day to see who caught the most fish. But most importantly… everyone had fun! Thank you Mark Stafford and Marv Leake of Stafford Video for keeping the cameras rolling all day long! When Mark is finished, each child will get a video to remember this special day. We were also joined by a local news team from KVAL news and there was a great story on the news that night. But, lastly, I must thank Jim Martin and Don Adams once again for making this trip possible. Without their hard work and hours and hours of time spent putting this all together, it wouldn’t have happened. THANK YOU!

To date, our cyclists have raised over $1.56 million dollars! The 2016 Cycle Oregon ride, dubbed Go For Gold, takes cyclists along Oregon’s Southern coastline.

Looking for a simple way to give back to Candlelighters? The 14th annual Harvest of Hope is scheduled for October 22nd at the Hilton Portland & Executive Tower. This is our signature fundraising gala and we need your help to make it a success. Here are 10 simple ways:
10 Batman, Wonder Woman, Ironman, and Superman were just some of the many superheroes that showed up to support the SUPERHERO 5K at Cook Park. With nearly 450 in attendance and perfect weather, fun was had by all on the course. After the race, the festivities continued with visits from therapy animals, an obstacle course, fire and police and photos with the Superhero Coalition. The Old Spaghetti Factory gave gift certificates to race winners and to every child who participated in the first-ever SUPERHERO Villain Chase. A special thanks to our vendors: City of Tigard, Kona Ice, Brenda Carlson, Haley Childers Photography, Columbia River Pet Partners, Mountain Peaks
