Families That Shine: Candlelighters Family Campers Friendship, Understanding, Community. Words can’t really describe Candlelighters Family Camp, because it’s more than a camp. Candlelighters Family Camp is our most popular and impactful program that offers hope, healing, and light to children with cancer and their families. Since 1995, Candlelighters Family Camp in Eugene has brought nearly 4,250 people together during Labor Day weekend. Families get a chance to enjoy activities that make camping so special, such as horseback riding, swimming, riding go karts, zip lining, attending
camp fires and riding on bumper boats for three incredible days. Thanks to Yoga/Meditation Teacher Tami Taylor, Sydney Wright for coordinating haircuts and beard trims by American Traditional Barbershop, hosting of the Art Shack and Family Camp Masterpiece by The Children’s Healing Art Project (CHAP) and Art Volunteer Coordinator Angela Sherwood, and Camp Harlow’s staff for making the experience so special. This year’s Candlelighters Family Camp brought together more than 250 campers including 19 new families! “It is really hard to express how

important this camp has been for us. Connecting with other families who are walking this cancer journey. Supporting new families as they deal with their new reality. We laugh, cry, reminisce, swap stories, give and receive advise, cheer on small victories, and most of all, lift each other up. This journey doesn’t end with the last chemo pill. This journey lasts a lifetime” says Sara Wilkison. Candlelighters Family Camp is offered to families affected by childhood cancer who are currently undergoing treatment, in remission,
or bereaved. Attendance is 100% free of charge and is supported by Hillman Family Foundations, The Oregon Community Foundation, Clifford & Dixie Henderson, Juan Young Trust, Randall Children’s Hospital, and donors like you. Thanks to the leadership of Kristin Burgoyne, 5 amazing Camp Counselors, 8 Host Families, Nurse Melissa Cliffton, Photographer Bryan Jochumson, and 13 caring and compassionate volunteers who came together to handle the many little details of executing a three-day camp.

2018 SUPERHERO 5K RECAP Over 450 masked, caped, and fully accessorized superheroes descended on Cook Park Saturday, August 18th
to participate in the 6th annual SUPERHERO 5K Run/Walk raising over $27,000 to support Candlelighters’ programs that help families battling childhood cancer. This unique event brings together the families we support and the community that supports us for a special day of fitness and celebration.

Summer DIY Recaps Eric Gross Ride For A Child BBQ
A beautiful day, great food, a competitive cornhole tourney and a jet boat ride = fundraising success for this year’s Ride For A Child. Committee Chair Eric Gross held a BBQ to raise funds for his RFAC Team – Team Otto. The food was great, thanks to Fred Meyer and Gartners Meats, Rose Villa made cupcakes and libations were supplied by Rogue Brewery and Westrey Wine Company. The highlight of the night, Willamette JetBoats took the attendees down the Willamette River to the waterfalls and enjoyed a wonderful evening of beautiful scenery, cool breezes and daredevil maneuvers. This wonderful event raised $5,000 for our RFAC program. Thanks to all who came out and enjoyed a great night.
McMenamins Friends and Family Night
Thank you to our community for coming out to McMenamins Kennedy School for Friends and Family Night, we raised over $4,000 for Candlelighters programs and services!!!! You literally packed the house with long wait times all evening and 50% of all sales were donated to Candlelighters! The 2nd annual Golf to Give Challenge brought 82 golfers for another beautiful day at Stone Creek Golf Club raising funds for Candlelighters. PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: Rogue Snowmobilers The Rogue Snowmobilers are a non-profit snowmobile/grooming club responsible for grooming the Thousand Springs Snow Park. The club maintains over 600 miles of trails. They ensure not only do snowmobilers have access to these parts of the woods, but anyone. For the past 20 years they’ve raised over $100,000 for the Southern Oregon Chapter of Candlelighters through their Pie Auction and also sponsor a day where the kids and their families can come up and enjoy a day riding snowmobiles, playing in the snow and eating a wonderful meal. 14 year old Rylee spent her time serving lunches to our families in Randall Children’s Hospital, tagged Bedside Buddies, and helped prepare for Family Camp. Rylee says, “For any volunteers, everyone in the office is extremely nice and welcoming. Also that if you volunteer on Tuesdays, you can help serve tacos at Randall.” 15 year old Erin co-emceed our SUPERHERO 5K and did an amazing job cheering on runners and building up the

17 year old Evan donated his time by reviewing archival documents and database entry. Evan went through 41 years of Candlelighters Newsletters to pull important historical data and enter that information into our database. This HUGE project totaled 40 hours of work.

RIDE FOR A CHILD
T
his September an extraordinary group of cyclists will be riding in Cycle Oregon’s Classic, a seven-day 383 mile cycling journey climbing 28,797 feet through Northeastern Oregon. RFAC is also being represented internationally at the Camino de Santiago in Spain! Together, they have raised over $185,000 and awareness about the impacts of childhood cancer on the WHOLE family. Riders are paired with a child who has recently battled cancer, named an honored child. Congratulations to Team Maggie, Team Sawyer, Team Jillie, Team Otto, and Team McKayla for another amazing year!

FAMILY ACTIVITIES HIGHLIGHTS Mid-Willamette Valley Chapter Fishing the McKenzie River It was another amazing day on the McKenzie River for our 8th annual fishing trip! We started with a warm breakfast put on by the Northwest Steelheaders with help from Home Depot. University of Oregon and Oregon State University athletes joined our families on the river fishing side by side. “I’ve sat with a couple of kids, just kind of talked to them,” said Oregon State wrestler Kagan Calkins. “They are just kids; they want to have fun. They want to go ahead and play.” Fishing guides from all over donated their day to take our kids fishing and share their expertise. Thank you Jim Martin and Don Adams for keeping this event “afloat!” What a day! “It’s all about the kids and trying to keep their mind off of what their problems are for a day,” said Jim Martin, a McKenzie River fishing guide.

Teen Program, The Luminaries – Indoor Skydiving at iFly Portland In July, The Luminaries got to experience indoor skydiving at iFLY Portland. In addition to skydiving, the teens participated in a STEM lesson and learned about the physics and engineering behind wind tunnel technology as well as conducted a drop experiment. The most exciting part of the day was watching each teen (and a few brave parents) experience skydiving! Thanks to the incredibly professional staff at iFLY, all of the teens in attendance including those with limited mobility were able to experience indoor skydiving. Candlelighters wants to express gratitude to iFLY Portland for giving us the nonprofit discount and for being amazing hosts! PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT IN-HOSPITAL PROGRAMS Being in the hospital is tough. Candlelighters is there for support every step of the way. We understand that both in-patient and out-patient stays come with their own challenges and we help provide a better quality of life during their stay. From meals and snacks to cuddly friends that make pokes easier, donors and volunteers like you have made this possible for 41 years. Candlelighters Snack Cart
Every Friday, the fully loaded snack cart rolls through the halls of Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and offers sweet and salty snacks to patients, family members, nurses and doctors to help make days a bit brighter. 5,000 snacks are distributed annually.

Sometimes you just need a hot meal to make a tough day a little bit easier. Candlelighters wants to make sure that families in the hospital are provided with meals to keep them going through their long days. Our meals allow families an opportunity to meet with each other, or make sure more time is spent by their patient’s side, and less time searching for a meal. Only the patient is provided a meal with their hospital stay, and purchasing meals can be costly, and our aim with our in-hospital meals and food pantry is to help ease that burden. Serving 50 hot meals a year.
Bedside Buddies
Candlelighters delivers lovable, cuddly Bedside Buddies to children at Doernbecher who have recently checked into the hospital. These soft, furry stuffed animals are cheerfully waiting on beds to greet any newly admitted child and there to cling to for reassurance when a child is facing a painful procedure, chemotherapy, scans and more. Our Bedside Buddies can also be found in the arms of children in outpatient oncology and radiation clinics. Although they are only a small distraction, they provide comfort and can bring a smile on a tough day. Serving 1500 Bedside Buddies a year.
Food Pantries, Toy Chests, and Movie Libraries
The food pantry offers hearty snacks and small meals to hungry tummies at any time. It can supplement hospital meals or provide relief for families who cannot afford snacks otherwise. We also help provide some entertainment for families during their stay with toys ranging from Hot Wheels to puzzles and we also provide child appropriate movies and regular movies for parents when their child is fast asleep. Serving 500 families a year.
We are always looking for dinner/lunch partners like The Old Spaghetti Factory who’ve been donating meals since 1996 or Xerox for providing grants to feed our families!

MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Raising Awareness: September is Childhood
Cancer Awareness Month, a month set aside each year to turn our love and hope to the nation’s children impacted by this deadly disease. Why the need? Approximately 16,000 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with childhood cancer. It is the leading cause of death of children in the United States. • A presidential proclamation recognizing National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month was first issued in September 2012 by President Barack Obama. • An initial proclamation was signed in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush, naming October as National Awareness Month for Children with Cancer. Candlelighters prides itself on being the ONLY organization in Oregon and SW Washington focused on WHOLE family support throughout the childhood cancer journey; from diagnosis, treatment, remission, and beyond.

When a parent hear’s the words “Your child has cancer”, imagine the fear, the uncertainty, and the questions: What does this mean for my child and my family? When five families found themselves battling childhood cancer while practically living in Doernbecher in 1977, they were scared,
alone, and away from family and friends. It didn’t help that the statistics weren’t in their favor. IN THE 1970S, only 58% OF KIDS DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER, SURVIVED. In essence, these five families had nowhere to turn for emotional support except for each other. Today, 85% of all children diagnosed with cancer survive. What clinical outcomes STILL don’t address is the emotional, psychosocial needs of every member of the family. This diagnosis can lead to anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and the list goes on. Since the start of Candlelighters For Children With Cancer in 1977, families have come to rely on these programs and services as they endure the emotional journey of childhood cancer. And while treatments for childhood cancer are more sophisticated today than they were when Candlelighters was formed, the disease can have life-long effects on the child and every member of the family. As we honor those families who are living the childhood cancer journey, we recognize the battle scars that affect them for the rest of their lives. It’s our mission to lessen their isolation and offer opportunities to meet others like them that can offer inspiration, hope and education. Until there is a cure, there is a need for Candlelighters.

She is a Social Work practicum student and through her 9 month internship will be supporting our families though in-hospital services, family activities, and other supportive programming. Mayra is bilingual and bi-cultural and will help Candlelighters better engage the Latino community as they endure childhood cancer.
