I answered one of your correspondent’s questions about my last article and stated in no uncertain terms that any criticism by One Nation of Andrew Hastie that said or even implied he was a traitor to this country was disgraceful and that Pauline Hanson needed to apologise for any comments that insulted this brave Australian soldier who had worn the uniform of his country with distinction. I suggested she also needs to pull the cartoon and redo canberradaily.com.au

it. She does her cause no favours by stupid, ignorant comments like that. One Nation needs to concentrate on the real enemy, the current government and its Green allies. In a similar vein, I looked with interest at One Nation’s immigration policy. I see where they are coming from, but there are a number of questions that need answering. The last thing we need is to throw the baby out with the bath water. I think the LNP policy looks more sensible in tying immigration numbers to housing. We need a balance to ensure the jobs Australians can’t currently fill, for whatever reason, are filled. Student visas and family reunions are areas that can and should most probably be reduced. We also desperately need to address our skill shortages by more TAFE places and practical courses at uni to train doctors

and other home-grown skilled professionals, but this all takes time. To me, the most important question is who we let in. I have no problem excluding all but a few well-vetted professionals from the world’s trouble spots to minimise the risk of importing people who hate Australia and the West in general. Yes, many of these will be Middle Eastern Muslims. We need immigrants who will embrace our values and our laws. The UK is perhaps five years further down the track of what may happen if we don’t get the mix right. Sensible vetting in the past of immigrants from 190 different countries who wished to make a fresh start for their families in this advanced, tolerant, free Western democracy has worked well. Which brings me to the Royal Commission into Antisemitism. It is, as its critics say, only half a

Royal Commission because the perpetrators of Jew hatred in this country have not been called before it. Where are the hate preachers? The radical, bigoted agitators? The feral university antisemitic lecturers? And where are the government ministers and Green senators? The PM needed to be called. I agree with those Jewish leaders who think it is still better than nothing, but I suspect the report will only touch the surface. The LNP and One Nation must promise, should they win government, to immediately establish an antisemitism Royal Commission Mark 2 to look into all the areas this one was not allowed to investigate or ran out of time to investigate. It needs to be thoroughly done so we can, as a society, root out the evil virus of antisemitism and start to heal the division in our society. 17 September 2026

There is a lot to be proud of in the people who live and work in Canberra. Australian National University (ANU) Distinguished Professor of Theoretical Physics Susan Scott is certainly one of them. The proud resident of Canberra since 1989 and leading ANU researcher has just been awarded the prestigious Harrie Massey Medal, the highest honour presented jointly by the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP) and the UK Institute of Physics (IoP). Awarded only once every two years to an exceptional physicist working in Australia or an Australian researcher abroad, the medal recognises Professor Scott’s groundbreaking discoveries in general relativity, cosmology, and gravitational wave science. Professor Scott is also only the second woman to receive the award since it was established in 1990. “It’s a tremendous honour, I think, because it is such a pinnacle award,” said Professor Scott. “It is a great recognition of my research work over the years.” Born and raised in Melbourne, where Professor Scott was unsurprisingly named Dux of Methodist Ladies’ College, she then went on to complete her initial undergraduate degree and Honours at Monash University. Professor Scott then moved to South Australia, where she earned her PhD in mathematical physics at the University of Adelaide, after which she went to the United Kingdom on a Rhodes Fellowship at Oxford University and spent four years working alongside eminent physicist Sir Roger Penrose. After moving to Canberra, Professor Scott was also the first female professor of physics in the history of ANU. Beyond the personal and professional satisfaction Professor Scott rightly feels, her wish to

share this with the community is not about further accolades. “I also feel it’s a wonderful thing for women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics),” she said. “It really helps when you can see examples of other women who are succeeding in their work and career and research and being recognised. As a theoretical physicist specialising in Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity, Professor Scott’s work probes some of the deepest mysteries of the cosmos, including the origin of the universe and the properties of black holes. Professor Scott is passionate about encouraging young people – especially girls – into STEM pursuits. “STEM spans everything from experimental chemistry and physics to theoretical mathematics and astronomy, looking into space,” she said. When asked what advice she would offer to young girls or women contemplating a path in science but wondering if they can succeed, Professor Scott offered a heartfelt message. “The first thing I’d say, as I told my own two daughters, is follow your heart,” she said. “These days, if girls follow their heart, they will have genuine opportunities to progress in STEM careers.” Yet despite her global success, Professor Scott specifically chose to reach out to Canberra Weekly and Canberra Daily to share her story. “I love living in Woden Valley, I love working at ANU, and I feel very connected to Canberra,” she said. “I wanted people in our local community to see this story, because it’s wonderful for locals to see positive stories about women in science succeeding right here in our backyard.”

A Pakistani boy is brought up in a struggling family living in one of Karachi’s least fortunate suburbs; decades later, now an Australian citizen, the chosen country he loves recognises him with a national honour. Mohammed Ali OAM, founder of relief charity HelpingACT, says he is overwhelmed and humbled. Mr Ali was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the King’s Birthday Honours in June – celebrating Australians who make an outstanding contribution to the community. This week, Governor-General Sam Mostyn formally presented him with the medal at an investiture ceremony. “It was an honour beyond my belief, because I had not dreamt of anything like this in my life,” Mr Ali said. “Being acknowledged reflects on the work of all the volunteers who have worked for eight years so far in HelpingACT, plus other persons who have helped from a distance, as a donor. I am simply a symbol of HelpingACT and the work.” canberradaily.com.au

HelpingACT operates on the principle that food and shelter are fundamental human rights. It aims to serve both immediate needs through food assistance, and longterm goals for resettlement and stability. “The main drive of HelpingACT is that no-one sleeps hungry,” Mr Ali said. Mr Ali says his own childhood instilled a desire to prevent others from losing their childhoods to hardship. “My inspiration for HelpingACT came from a child who was struggling; from a woman struggling with what food would be there,” Mr Ali said. “It reminded me of my own mother and father. There were times when it was a problem. We were helped by our relatives.” He expected that when he came to Australia, there would be no poverty; in a wealthy city like Canberra, Mr Ali believes there should be no place for homelessness or extreme poverty. “When you come to a place where you don’t find any justification, that led me to think: no, we cannot sit quietly, and watch these things go on silently around you. We have to do something.” In 2018, Mr Ali founded HelpingACT with secretary Manar Ahmad and two others. Today, HelpingACT provides food hampers to families – usually two new ones seeking aid every week. It runs breakfast and welfare programs at 15 educational institutions (including three colleges), serving nearly $700 worth of food to more than 500 students every week; programs at three of those establishments began in the last three months.

Roundabout Canberra: Community charity helping children in need by NICHOLAS FULLER When Hannah Andrevski founded children’s charity Roundabout Canberra to provide essential baby and children’s items to families in need, she says, she had no idea of the extent of the problem of child poverty. Roundabout supports children from newborns to the age of 16, supplying 130 local services – government agencies, hospitals, schools, migrant and refugee support services, women’s refuges – and 700 social workers with books, toys, clothing, nappies, toiletries, school bags, cots, prams, car seats,

and highchairs. “The idea is that anything that a family might need for their children can come from Roundabout,” Ms Andrevski said. “Many Canberrans live and work in a fairly middle-class, comfortable bubble. I often have people saying to me: ‘Oh, I’m really surprised that there’s a need for a service like this in Canberra.’” But need exists across Canberra, and is worsening year by year, driven by rising cost-of-living pressures. “We’ve seen more and more families needing help, because there’s only so long that families can hold on for,” Ms Andrevski said. Some children lack nappies or

clothes that fit. Primary school children refuse to go to school because they do not have what their peers have; they carry their belongings in plastic bags instead of backpacks and lunchboxes. Roundabout hears of a woman and her two teenage sons sleeping in her car; other families sleep in sheds and tents at the Cotter. Roundabout helped 5,401 children in 2025, 16 per cent more than in 2024. This year alone, Roundabout has already helped 4,000 children, and Ms Andrevski expects to support more than 6,000 by the end of it. Demand is around 20 per cent higher than last year. Nor does Ms Andrevski expect it to end next year: she assumes that fuel prices and the cost of food will remain high, and that the housing crisis won’t go away anytime soon. “The demand is definitely going up. Every year, we think: is this the point where things will start to peter out? But we’ve seen that steady increase in need each year. It’s not going down.” Before founding Roundabout, Ms Andrevski used to give away items her children had outgrown for free on Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree; she was never sure they ended up with the people who needed them. She asked local charities whether a Melbourne model for rehoming children’s items with families in need could work in Canberra. Women’s refuge

Karinya House told her that it would meet a need: other services were referring women to them who needed material items for their babies, taking away their capacity to provide wraparound support. Ms Andrevski founded Roundabout in 2018 – and six years later, she was named 2024 Canberra Citizen of the Year in recognition of her commitment to supporting families in need. “We’ve very much filled a gap in the sector, and have come to be relied upon very heavily,” Ms Andrevski said. “Being able to hand something tangible over to families is key in terms of rapport building and ability to address homelessness, domestic violence, and other complex challenges that require a lot of trust for a family to seek and receive help from a service.” Ms Andrevski expects pressure on families will continue next year. “My assumption is that fuel prices are still very high; the cost of food is still very high. This housing crisis is not going away anytime soon; there’s no magic solution to that. So I think we’re going to continue to see that need increase.” But Roundabout will meet that need, with the public’s help. “We aim to never say no to a family that needs our support,” Ms Andrevski said. “We’re very creative; our community is very responsive.” canberradaily.com.au

Shopping centre fun run by GEORGIA CURRY Usually, the only time people run in a shopping mall is for Boxing Day sales, but people will run at Canberra Outlet on Saturday 26 September not for bargains but for the joy of running. In a Canberra-first – perhaps an Australia-first – a 5km time trial will be held inside a shopping centre (10 laps of a 500m indoor course) and will be professionally chip-timed. The woman behind this new concept is 27-year-old Karla Maganto Parisotto, who operates a running collective called DK Society. “You might even do a bit of window shopping while you’re at it and then go, ‘Oh I’ll come back later in an hour for that,’” Karla laughed. “Hopefully all the shops will put their best outfits at the front.” This is a serious run, however, with runners released in waves (all paces welcome) starting with elite level at 7.30am and finishing with juniors at 9.23am. “It will take place early in the morning where

people come at 6am, pick up their bibs, do a warm up,” Karla said. “Ideally runners will start by 7.30am and it should all be done by 10am before people start shopping. If it doesn’t, it’s just another experience for shoppers to see people running.” Spectators are most welcome. Karla, a full-time worker and Pilates instructor, said DK Society started out in 2024 with a few runners on a Friday morning at Blundell’s Cottage. Why is it called “DK” society? “We used to call each other dropkicks because who would run at 5.30am on a Friday morning in the minus degrees?” Karla said. “So, we were like, we must be dropkicks if we’re doing it. “As the group grew, we wanted the name to reflect that we’re not just a run club, we’re also a community of like-minded people who share a passion for movement and connection. That’s where the idea of calling it a society came from. DK society is a free, inclusive, community run

No age limit on support: CRCC marks 50 years This year, Canberra Rape Crisis Centre (CRCC) marks 50 years as the ACT’s specialist sexual violence service. Half a century on, we are reminded of something that shapes everything we do: there is no age limit on the impact of sexual violence, and no age limit on the right to be heard and helped. Sexual violence can happen at any stage of life. And a disclosure – the moment someone chooses to speak about what happened – can happen at any time. For some older Canberrans, that moment comes decades after the event. It may be prompted by illness, grief, or the death of the perpetrator, or by significant changes like retirement, the arrival of a grandchild, or the beginning of a new relationship. For family members, carers, and health professionals, a disclosure can arrive unexpectedly, in a moment of trust. CRCC provides support to anyone impacted

We offer specialist counselling, crisis support, and advocacy for victim-survivors of any age or gender, along with their families, friends, and supporters. Canberra’s big crab by GEORGIA CURRY Goulburn may boast the big merino, but Canberra has the big crab, a 10m x 3m inflatable red crab that’s part of the Canberra Art Biennial (11 September to 31 October). This large crustacean by artist Harrison Witsey sits atop Canberra House at 40 Marcus Clarke Street, Civic, a nod to Australia’s tradition of oversized roadside attractions (it’s even animated by a talking voice). There are 20 more public spaces in Canberra being radically transformed by art. Founder of Canberra Art Biennial, Neil Hobbs, has been bringing art to random places in Canberra since 2016. “One year we had about 40 moulded washing-up gloves dropped in the lake so you had those little fingers sitting out of the water and on the opening night, a kid said, ‘Dad, there’s a body in the water,’ and we had all this sort of kerfuffle,” Neil said. “We had to calm 42

people down, that was kind of fun.” To date, the National Capital Authority (renowned for its rigid rule of Parliamentary Triangle) has readily allowed art to be in, on and around the lake. “We haven’t really had a knockback, so we haven’t found the boundary on that yet,” Neil said. “If it’s temporary, they’re fine.” Even the manicured lawns of Commonwealth Place have been permitted to be painted with large text in red, black and yellow letters: “Walk Around Like You Own The Place”, a work by artist Archie Moore. It’s not all sculptures, however, the Canberra Art Biennial spans installation, performance (don’t miss “artpark” with DJs and bars in a carpark), printmaking and new media across a diverse Canberra landscape (even Canberra Airport). “It’s based on activations of empty shopfronts or funny little spaces that you wouldn’t normally associate with art,” Neil said. “It’s something

really crazy happening in some little part of Canberra that won’t happen again.” It has that touch of spontaneity but also the longevity of being on for seven weeks. Blood Moon by James Dunbar Echo, $34.99

James Dunbar made a good 2023 entry into Australia’s crime fiction ranks with Mole Creek, and has now followed it up with an exciting sequel, Blood Moon. It opens with the main characters from the first book, disgraced journalist Xander McAuslan and former Vietnam veteran Lorenzo, being targeted by a Russian assassin. However, before the killer can strike, the pair become caught up in two other crimes involving a bloody episode from the Vietnam War and the disappearance of a very successful artist. Dunbar juggles the various plot elements with considerable skill, and the result is a lively and entertaining read.

In Plain Sight by Robyn Dennison Text, $34.99 Robyn Dennison’s adult crime debut, In Plain Sight, is a well-written book that offers rich characters and a nuanced plot. Sex-crimes detective Lara Wilton is under a cloud at work and reluctantly agrees to return to her former hometown to investigate an ugly crime involving images on a USB and identical twin sisters with a secret. The case, however, begins to stagnate when the sisters refuse to fully cooperate, and Lara finds herself caught in a web of lies and manipulation. In Plain Sight takes the familiar tropes of many recent crime novels and imbues them with depth and compassion. A thoughtful novel.

Why some people never want to retire

Lately, I’ve been having more and more conversations with people who are thinking about retiring, about to retire, or already retired. Interestingly, people tend to talk about retirement in very different ways. Some count down the days with excitement. Others feel anxious, flat or strangely lost at the thought of stopping work. And some retire … only to return to work

six months later because they miss it terribly. Psychologically, this makes perfect sense. Work is not just about income. For many people, work provides identity, routine, purpose, social connection and a sense of competence. It gives structure to the week and often to our sense of self. When people retire, they are not simply leaving a job; they are leaving behind a role that may have shaped them for decades. As a psychologist, I often notice that people who love their work are not necessarily the people earning the most money or working the least stressful jobs. Usually, they are people whose work aligns with their values. They feel useful. Connected. Mentally stimulated. They feel that what they do

matters. Personally, I love my work as a psychologist. I genuinely find both my academic and clinical work incredibly rewarding. It gives me purpose, structure and meaning. I love talking to people, teaching students, writing, researching and helping others make sense of themselves. Now, that doesn’t mean I love every part of work. I could happily reduce the administration side of things tomorrow; the endless forms and paperwork don’t exactly light up my soul. But the meaningful parts of my work still energise me. And I think this is an important distinction. Sometimes when people say they hate work, what they actually hate is the exhaustion, bureaucracy, toxic workplace culture or lack of balance. When those pressures are reduced, many rediscover that they still enjoy contributing and feeling productive. There is also something psychologically protective about staying engaged in life. Research consistently shows that people who

maintain purpose, social connection and mental stimulation tend to have better mental health and cognitive wellbeing as they age. This does not mean everyone should keep working full-time forever. Absolutely not. But it does suggest that completely stopping meaningful activity can sometimes leave people feeling adrift. Leonie Keogh hopes to raise $2,000 for Huntington’s disease, a rare and as yet incurable neurological condition that affects five members and three generations of her family. On Sunday 20 September, she and a team of friends and relations will take part in the Walk 4 Hope – a fourkilometre event in Lennox Gardens to show people affected by the disease that they are not alone. “People don’t really understand the depth of the disease and what it means for the family and carers,” Ms Keogh said. “Partners become carers; children and siblings are affected; and

entire families live with the uncertainty and emotional toll of the disease.” Huntington’s affects thousands of Australians – 8.9 out of 100,000 people nationwide. In Canberra, an estimated 50 people live with the condition, and a further 200 people are impacted, Huntington’s Australia says. But it remains one of the country’s least-known neurological conditions, Ms Keogh says. “People describe it as a combination of Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and motor neurone disease,” Ms Keogh said. “It is a devastating inherited condition that slowly takes away a person’s ability to move, think, communicate, and live

A mutation in DNA causes an abnormal huntingtin protein that damages neurons – affecting someone’s ability to think, plan, swallow, and walk, Ms Keogh said. “You get mood swings – the emotional side of it – and the physical side affects your movement. Even things as simple as swallowing and drinking become significantly more difficult as the disease progresses.” Huntington’s typically manifests between the ages of 35 and 50, beginning with involuntary movements, depression, irritability, and progressive decline in thinking and memory, UNSW states: “People lose the ability to work, manage money, live independently, and eventually care for themselves.” Ultimately, patients with the disease often die within 10 to 20 years after onset. Each child has a 50 per cent chance of inheriting the disease from a parent. Ms Keogh’s father has it; so,

she believes, did her grandfather. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and depression, and put in a mental institution. “At least now they’re aware of what it is,” Ms Keogh said. Four other members of her family are gene-positive, but do not yet show symptoms. “Watching someone you love deteriorate from Huntington’s is incredibly difficult, and for those family members who carry the gene, there is also the knowledge that they may one day face the same future,” Ms Keogh said. “A lot of people choose not to find out, because it’s a pretty hard thing to know that’s your future.” Her father, now 78, was diagnosed three years ago, but the family suspected he might have Huntington’s some 15 years ago. “One of the biggest struggles we’ve found is that a lot of professionals – GPs, even in hospitals – are not aware of the disease,” granddaughter Kim Budgen said.

During the Walk 4 Hope, peak national body Huntington’s Australia hopes to raise $130,000 across Australia, and $6,000 in the ACT. In Canberra, money will help to run support groups, non-clinical counselling sessions, education and training programs, and other services. “We would love to see Canberrans come along and walk with us,” Ms Keogh said. “You don’t need to have been personally affected by Huntington’s to take part. Simply showing up, walking alongside these families or donating lets people know

they are not facing this disease alone.” Walk 4 Hope will be held in Lennox Gardens, Yarralumla, on Sunday 20 September. Arrival and merchandise available from 9.30am; event starts at 10am.
