The Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA), one of the first national AI laws in the world, was supposed to be passed by Canada in 2025 However, the bill quietly died in committee, leaving the nation without specific AI legislation at a crucial juncture AIDA, part of Bill C-27, was intended to regulate "high-impact" AI systems through risk management, transparency, and penalties However, the entire bill was removed from the Order Paper following months of stalled clause-by-clause examination and a change of government Canada continues to regulate AI through a combination of sectoral regulations, human rights, privacy, consumer protection, and public sector directives
Simultaneously, deepfakes, generative AI, and automated decision-making have evolved from theoretical threats into practical challenges for public services, jobs, and elections After 2025, a new strategy centred on a dedicated AI minister, a revised national plan, and more focused regulation became possible, driven by this regulatory vacuum and the political impetus to address it.

The biggest gap is between expectations and readiness.
Most Canadian SMBs I work with have heard the hype that AI will transform everything, automate your whole business, replace half your team etc But when I walk in, the reality is different Their CRM is half-populated Leads are tracked in spreadsheets Sales follow-ups happen when someone remembers
The hype says "implement AI " The reality says "get your data and processes in order first " That's messy, but it's where results come from
Where AI actually drives measurable outcomes is in specific, process focused solutions Things like AI sales systems that ensure no lead slips through the cracks, automated follow-up sequences that trigger based on real behaviour, or chatbots that qualify prospects before they hit the sales team

I worked with a professional services firm that wanted an AI chatbot to handle inbound inquiries
They were convinced it would solve their lead response problem, prospects were waiting days to hear back, and deals were going cold
