The Small Project Funding Stream 2022 provided $160,000 in funding to 11 youth-led projects. Creation received 21 proposals from 6 provinces and territories, representing a funding request of over $309,000.
Projects funded in this stream centered around connection. Project activities focused on providing opportunities for collaborative learning. Youth were able to access traditional and cultural knowledge, learn about their wholistic health and wellbeing, and learn about different artistic media in safe environments that encouraged relationship building and fostered a sense of community. Grantees shared that these collaborative learning experiences empowered their participants, and that the youth were eager to share their new knowledge and skills, which further enhanced their sense of connection to community. For project leaders, the growth and strengthening of these relationships was a sign that their projects were successful.
The importance of meaningful connections was further emphasized for grantees; as they relied on collaboration and community supports to navigate challenges with logistical challenges, such as difficulty accessing programming space, scheduling conflicts, and unexpected extra costs. Despite these challenges, all grantees were able to surpass their expected youth participant reach and achieve their project goals. The Small Project Funding Stream 2022 supported youth leaders in delivering programs that increased access to traditional knowledge, increased youth confidence and empowerment, and increased connections to land, community, and culture.

So, try and learn everything that you can from Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and freely share what you learn with others. Empowering people with knowledge will help them develop a stronger cultural identity and strengthen community ties as they share and pass this knowledge onto future generations.
