Partnership Stream 2023
Executive summary
The Partnership Stream - Urban Parks 2023 was supported by Parks Canada. Partnership streams are externally funded by a partner who is interested in supporting projects with a particular focus area, or in a specific region or community. The Partnership Stream - Urban Parks provided $73,200 to 10 Indigenous youth-led projects focused land-based and/or governance-based activities that could directly inform the development of the National Urban Parks program. Projects in this stream were located around one of the National Urban Parks candidate site locations, including: Greater Victoria, BC; Edmonton region, AB; Saskatoon region, SK; Winnipeg, MB; Windsor, ON; Halifax, NS; and Montreal, QC.
Projects funded through the Partnership Stream - Urban Parks focused on strengthening connections between youth, the land, their cultures and their communities through land-based learning. Grantees provided youth with opportunities to engage with each other and to learn traditional and cultural knowledge while participating in on-the-land activities. These experiences also enabled youth to build knowledge and skills around leadership, environmental conservation and land stewardship. Grantees used flexible program delivery and collaborated with community organizations and volunteers to overcome challenges due to scheduling difficulties and illness. They saw success in strengthening connections to culture and supporting cultural revitalization, as well as in increasing overall youth engagem

It was really nice to sit with people, telling stories, learning about porcupines and building relationships. A lot of the time in my daily life I feel disconnected it was really special to share this time with our creative community. Attend the free-capacity building workshops offered by IYR. I'm utilizing what I learned. Also, participate in sharing circles or other events they host. You meet many like-minded youth and they share insightful ideas that you can bring back to your community. Train your team and get certified. You will be able to continue your activities safely in the future and save money by running them yourself. Reach out to other youth groups or networks. They have a lot of information they're willing to share and may be in a position to help if requested. Always have a back plan in place.
