Each year, Creation’s Advisory Circle determines 1-4 Emerging Needs streams. These streams have a targeted focus and funding goal, based on the community needs identified by the Advisory Circle. The Education and Training Stream 2022 was identified as one of these streams, and it provided $99,500 in funding to 5 Indigenous youth-led projects. Creation received a total of 6 proposals from 4 provinces and territories, representing a funding request of $119,000.
Projects in this stream focused on strengthening youth leadership and increasing youth empowerment. Grantees used their funding to provide youth with opportunities to develop their leadership skills, and with opportunities for learning through education, research, knowledge sharing, and employment training. This focus on learning and capacity building enabled grantees to overcome challenges due to limited youth capacity, and to achieve their project goals. Project leaders reported that, as youth developed their leadership skills and grew their overall capacity, they saw an increase in youth engagement and increased self-confidence as youth developed their leadership skills and grew their overall capacity. As a result, grantees identified youth empowerment as an indicator of success for their projects. Overall, the Education and Training Stream 2022 supported youth leaders in delivering programs that strengthened youth leadership, increased youth confidence and empowerment, amplified Indigenous youth voices, and increased their capacity for advocacy.
