SOVEREIGNTY STREAM
In 2023, Creation's Youth Advisory Circle identified the Land and Food Sovereignty stream as an Emerging Needs stream. Emerging Needs streams have a targeted focus and funding goal, based on the community needs identified by Advisory Circle members. The Land and Food Sovereignty stream 2023 provided $224,000 in funding to nine Indigenous youth-led projects. Creation received a total of 29 proposals from seven provinces and territories, representing a funding need of over $700,000.
Projects funded through this stream focused on enhancing connections. Activities supported youth in connecting with traditional and cultural knowledge, in building intergenerational connections with Elders and Knowledge Keepers, in strengthening connections to community, and in fostering connections with the land. Overall, the Land and Food Sovereignty stream 2023 supported Indigenous youth leaders in delivering programming that provided opportunities for youth to learn traditional and cultural knowledge, and in fostering stronger connections between youth and the land, their cultures, and their communities. As a result, grantees saw an increase in youth empowerment, as well as an increase in their communities' overall food sovereignty and food security.
