The March issue is always a good opportunity to review the past year while looking ahead to the next: registry numbers have been tabulated, posted and celebrated (and what a year it was! - more on page 8); the bustle of the Royal and the previous show season is over, and the All-Canadians have given breeders their flowers to close the chapter (results start on page 18); individual awards nominations were received and reviewed, and reports have been run for production-related awards. The Jersey Canada office is now working hard to sort all this information, polish it up, and get it ready for members to review at our 2026 AGM in Ottawa, Ontario, March 27-29.

Now, the balance of 2026 remains: the first-round of committee meetings in April (interested in taking part? - check our website for vacancies); three more issues of the Canadian Jersey breeder, now entering its 80th year and going strong; working with the regions and our extension representatives to find and welcome new Jersey owners and Jersey Canada members; and, as always, processing your registrations and transfers quickly and accurately.

This may sound like a familiar cycle to those that have been closely involved with our association over the years, and there have been many of you, as this year marks Jersey Canada’s 125th anniversary! While many things have changed for our association, we take pride in our lasting successes: the Canadian Jersey herd-

This impressive history is thanks to generations of dedicated Jersey breeders, volunteers and staff that have guided Jersey Canada, formerly the Jersey Cattle Association of Canada, formerly the Canadian Jersey Cattle Breeders Association, through the ups and downs and ups, and into our quasquicentennial. Here’s to 125 more!

Ceci peut sembler un cycle familier pour ceux qui participent activement à notre association depuis plusieurs années et vous êtes plusieurs car cette année marquera le 125e anniversaire de Jersey Canada! It is hard to believe that my nineyear term is coming to an end. I have truly appreciated working with all the Directors from across Canada and the Jersey Canada staff. This opportunity has developed new friendships and grown old friendships. To me it is all about teamwork, from our Jersey Breeders, Members, Field Rep’s and Jersey Canada office staff, which makes the Jersey Cow a success. This really shows as in 2025 we had record registrations with a 10% increase over 2024 which is absolutely amazing considering 2024 was a record-breaking year.

As President I had the opportunity to sit in on all the different committee meetings this year. It was interesting to hear all the great discussions on assorted topics that took place. I would like to thank all the members who volunteer to sit on these committees. Your feedback and time to these meetings is greatly appreciated and valued. If you or someone you know would like to get involved, please reach out to the Jersey Canada staff or a director. I would say that it is a proven fact, after my many years on the board, that the more people we can get involved with the Jersey Cow discussion the stronger our breed becomes.

Our local Jersey Club members have been working hard to plan the AGM & Conference weekend to make it fun and welcoming for our guests. Thank you to my family, friends and fellow St. Lawrence Jersey Club members for all your support over the past nine years.

Il est difficile de croire que mon mandat de neuf ans tire à sa fin. J’ai vraiment apprécié travailler avec tous les administrateurs de partout au Canada et avec le personnel de Jersey Canada. Cette opportunité a créé de nouvelles amitiés et en a fait grandir d’anciennes. Pour moi le succès de la vache Jersey tient au travail d’équipe – de nos éleveurs de Jerseys, nos membres, nos représentants sur le terrain et le personnel du bureau de Jersey Canada. J’aimerais remercier tous les membres qui siègent bénévolement à ces comités. Vos commentaires et le temps dédié à ces rencontres est apprécié et estimé. Si vous, ou quelqu’un que vous connaissez, voulez participer, veuillez communiquer avec un membre du personnel ou un administrateur de Jersey Canada. Je dirais qu’il est prouvé, après plusieurs années au conseil, que plus il y a de gens engagés dans la discussion de la vache Jersey, plus notre race devient forte. En terminant, j’aimerais féliciter tous les récipiendaires de prix de Jersey Canada. Ce fut un plaisir pour moi et pour les autres membres du conseil qui ont communiqué avec vous personnellement pour vous apprendre cette excellente nouvelle. Record Registrations! Enregistrements record !

2025 registrations of Jerseys in Canada broke records for the second-year running, with 13,989 Jerseys entered into the Canadian herdbook, nearly 10% more than in 2024. This is the highest total in the “modern era,” ie. since 1963 and prior to supply management, and these registry numbers continue a trend that has seen Canadian Jersey registrations increasing steadily at nearly 4% on average, per year, since 2001. This has led to an increase in the percentage of Jerseys as part of the national dairy herd by over 2%, now at nearly 5% of all dairy cattle registered in 2024, a number not seen since the early 1970s.

This breed expansion has taken place over a period that has seen significant changes in the dairy industry, consumer trends, and the wider Canadian economy including: the advent of genomics; advances in on-farm technology including the introduction of robotic milking systems (now found on over 20% of all dairy farms in Canada); fewer farms, larger herds and more efficient cows; the steady decline of fluid milk consumption and shift to component demand; two recessions and a pandemic. Through collaboration at all levels, our industry has been able to weather unexpected adversity, while also increasing productivity and value for Canadians.

These increases offer producers and partners opportunities for continued growth by leveraging breed improvement

services. In 2025, Jersey Canada recorded 3,695 parentage results, and in the last 10 years, genomic testing of registered Jerseys has climbed from less than 5% to more than 25% of new registrations, the number of official milk-records for the breed has increased by 1% per year, and classifications have increased by 3% per year. These services provide valuable, reliable data that benefits everyone, data which would not be available without the contributions and commitment of Canadian dairy producers.

En 2025, les enregistrements de Jerseys au Canada ont brisé des records pour la deuxième année de suite avec 13 989 Jerseys qui sont enregistrés dans le livre généalogique canadien, presque 10 % de plus qu’en 2024. How do we balance strict biosecurity with the reality that contractors, vets, nutritionists, and equipment techs all need access to the farm?

M: Biosecurity is everything done to prevent the introduction and spread of disease. Disease can enter your farm through animals, people, and things (e.g., equipment, tools). ProAction has two biosecurity requirements related to visitors. BIO6 requires farms to develop a Visitors and Service Providers SOP that includes, at least, a disposal area for disposable clothing, a washing station, and clean clothing for visitors. BIO7 requires visible biosecurity signage from the main parking area.

Every farm is unique, with its own challenges and solutions. Mapping highrisk areas, implementing controls to minimize that risk, and ensuring biosecurity is top of mind are key components in striking a balance between biosecurity and visitors.

A farm map with biosecurity zones (Figure 2) helps plan movement around your farm and identify where biosecurity measures are needed. With your farm map, identify your Controlled Access Zone (CAZ), Restricted Access Zone (RAZ), and transition points. CAZ is where disease can be introduced or removed (e.g., the milk truck route). RAZ is where there is direct animal contact and carries the highest risk. Within zones, higher-risk areas require additional measures, such as controlling visitor movement. Transition points between zones (e.g., the milk house) must have additional biosecurity measures, such as a cleaning station. The

Are there practical, affordable ways to improve biosecurity around calf housing and feeding areas, since that’s where we seem to be most vulnerable?

M:Since calves are more susceptible to disease, they should be separated from older cattle. The movement of animals, people, and things into and out of the calf housing area should be controlled

in whatever way makes the most sense for your farm. A farm map with zoning is helpful for planning that movement.

Feed can bring in or help spread disease, so we need to ensure it doesn’t arrive contaminated or become contaminated on the farm. Source feed from a supplier that uses best biosecurity practices (ask about their HACCP plan). Store feed in a clean area, keeping feeds for different classes of cattle separate, labelling chemicals, pesticides, and medications and keeping them separate from the feed, and ensuring that all tools and

equipment are cleaned and disinfected. The feedbunk can also be a source of contamination, so it is recommended to clean it out daily.

The best way to improve biosecurity is by keeping records of disease events, deaths, performance, feeds received, crop treatments, cleaning, disinfection, and visitors. Few people enjoy maintaining their records, but it is always appreciated when issues arise, and solutions are found faster.

Are there practical steps we can take to reduce disease risks when buying or selling animals, beyond the usual health checks?

M: ProAction has three requirements to help reduce biosecurity risks when buying and selling cattle. BIO3 requires farms to have an SOP for vaccinating cattle. You, with your vet, will determine what vaccines are needed to protect your cattle from incoming diseases and to reduce the risk that cattle you sell will spread disease. BIO4 and BIO5 require farms to have SOPs for bringing in new cattle and for when cattle return (e.g., after a show). The SOPs must include requesting information about new cattle being purchased (e.g., treatments), designating an area for incoming cattle, ensuring those cattle are checked at least daily by trained staff who will respond to any abnormalities, and specifying what actions must be taken with new cattle (e.g., vaccinations).

Isolating all animals that come onto your farm is a best practice. However, it is not a proAction requirement because not all farms have the capacity to isolate cattle (e.g., lack of space). If you are un-

How can we evaluate whether our current sanitation practices are working, rather than just assuming they are?

M: In proAction, BIO1 requires farms to complete the Biosecurity Risk Assessment Questionnaire (RAQ) with their vet every two years. Completing the RAQ with your vet is an opportunity to assess your farm’s greatest biosecurity risks and determine how best to address them. BIO2 requires that farms record specific disease events. This record allows you to monitor disease occurrence and identify trends. The disease record is an excellent resource for completing the RAQ to determine which risks to prioritize, including your sanitation practices. To further evaluate those practices, it is recommended that you maintain a record of sanitation practices to determine whether they need to be changed.

Y a-t-il des étapes pratiques que nous pouvons prendre pour réduire le risque de maladies lorsqu’on achète ou vend des animaux, au-delà des vérifications usuelles de santé?

M: ProAction a trois exigences pour réduire les risques de biosécurité lorsqu’on achète ou vend des animaux. BIO3 exige que les fermes aient des PNE pour la vaccination du bétail. Vous devez, avec votre vétérinaire, déterminer quels

vaccins sont nécessaires pour protéger votre bétail de maladies introduites et pour réduire le risque que le bétail que vous vendez propagera une maladie. BIO4 et BIO5 exigent que les fermes aient des PNE pour l’introduction de nouveaux animaux et lorsque les animaux reviennent (ex. après une exposition). Plumpton College students take on Canada

In November 2025, a group of more than 20 students from Plumpton College in Lewes, United Kingdom, travelled across the Atlantic to learn about Canadian agriculture Accompanying the students were Apprenticeship Program Manager Catherine Daw, and Lecturer Clive Brickell with his wife, Deborah Brickell.

Catherine previously visited Canada during the 2005 World Jersey Cattle Bureau Conference in Quebec, and spent several months working with Paullor (Paul & Lorainne Franken) and Pleasant Nook (now Julie Eby). Drawing on those past connections, she reached out to enquire whether Jersey Canada would be interested in helping facilitate activities for the students during their trip.

Jersey Canada is grateful to Enniskillen Jerseys, Sargent Family Dairy, and Stonybrook Farms Ltd. for hosting the stu-

dents on farm tours, and thank you to staff at the Ontario Dairy Research Centre at the Elora Research Station and the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph for providing the students with informative, behind the scenes experiences.

We would also like to acknowledge the generosity and hospitality of Jersey exhibitors at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair who welcomed the students into their strings, taught them the ropes, and even provided calves for them to show in the Showmanship Competition.

A final thanks to Jersey Canada Extension Representative Larry Sheardown, who led the farm tours and supported the group throughout their entire week in Canada.

Students from Plumpton College were given an unforgettable international experience thanks to an incredible opportunity provided by Jersey Canada. A group of enthusiastic agriculture and livestock learners travelled across the Atlantic to work with Canadian dairy farmers, gaining hands-on experience and showcasing high-quality cattle at local shows. The trip offered us a unique chance to immerse ourselves in the Canadian dairy industry, where we learned from experienced breeders and developed practical skills at a professional level.

One of the highlights of the trip was attending the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. Known as one of the largest combined indoor agricultural events in the world, the Royal showcases elite cattle genetics, including showmanship classes, and celebrates the whole of agriculture. Jersey Canada partnered with local farmers who kindly provided Jerseys at the Royal for us to help prepare, fit and show. For many of the group it was their first time showing, making for an exciting and educational trip. Even the arable boys loved it!

During our trip, Jersey Canada also took us around two very different but equally impressive farms to learn about Canadian dairy systems, giving us the opportunity to compare our own dairy farms, and enabling us to ask questions and build contacts for the future.

Outside of our agriculture experiences, our group had the chance to explore Canada’s beauty. We visited the CN Tower at night, giving us amazing views of Toronto, for those who could look over the edge! We also took a trip to Niagara Falls, which for many of us was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and we loved every minute.

We would like to extend a big thank you to Jersey Canada as their support made this opportunity possible, creating lasting memories and inspiring the next generation of livestock farmers in the UK.

Jersey Canada, en partenariat avec des producteurs locaux qui ont gentiment fourni des Jerseys à la Royale et nous ont aidé à préparer et à présenter. Plusieurs dans le groupe en

The All-Canadian contest is a Jersey Canada award program that recognizes top cows in the show circuit. 2025 marked the 70th year of the contest!

Winners and nominees for each class were placed by a selection of judges who judged qualifying shows across Canada. Points were assigned for each placing to determine the overall All-Canadian, Reserve, and Honorable Mention for each class. All-Canadian winners will be presented with an award at the 2026 Jersey Canada Annual General Meeting in Ottawa, Ontario.

The Champion Cow of the 2025 All-Canadian contest is Stoney Point Joel Bailey , owned by Vierra Dairy Farms of Hillmar, California, USA. Bailey was 1st in class, Senior Champion, Grand Champion and Supreme Dairy Champion at the 2025 Royal Agricutural Winter Fair. She was also 1st in class, Senior Champion and Grand Champion at the 2025 World Dairy Expo.

Taking the Champion Heifer spot of the 2025 All-Canadian contest is Liberty Gen NS Video Vanna, exhibited and owned by Markus and Brenda Lothmann. Vanna was named 1st in class, 4-H and Junior Champion at the 2025 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.

THE NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF DAIRY FARMERS OF CANADA

Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) recently welcomed Annie AcMoody as its new Chief Executive Officer. Annie brings nearly 20 years of experience in dairy policy and economics to the role. Here’s more about Annie in her own words.

What’s your experience in dairy, and how did it lead you to DFC?

Dairy pulled me in when I was young. I was drawn to the system itself –how it works, how it supports farmers, how it benefits consumers, and how policy shapes it. I even worked on a dairy farm for a summer to learn more.

Since completing my Master’s, my career has been entirely focused on dairy. I worked at a dairy branch of the government of California and, later, at a producer association which focused on many of the same files as DFC: policy, sustainability, and economics.

I had the chance to take my passion, interest and experience back home to Canada five years ago in a policy role at DFC. It was a key opportunity to work on dairy policy in a way that makes a real difference for Canadian farmers and our sector.

In this new role, I’m committed to continuing that. I believe in what dairy farmers produce. I believe in the system that allows them to produce it. I’m ready to fight for the sector’s collective interests and work alongside all of you to write the next great chapter for the industry.

You’ve worked in just about every area of dairy. What perspectives from these wide-ranging experiences are you bringing into this new role?

The power of collaboration. Our sector benefits from an incredible diversity of perspectives and experiences.

People often joke that if you put 15 farmers in a room, you’ll get 52 different opinions. That can be true on the surface, but when you take the time to listen, you’ll often find most people are working towards the same outcomes. Taking this perspective, whether as a leader or a participant in the conversation, can create effective collaboration that helps propel us forward together.

What do you see as the key areas of focus for DFC over the next year?

Undoubtedly, our focus will continue to be on trade and defending not only the livelihoods of Canadian dairy farmers, but the key role they play in our national food sovereignty and security.

Canada’s dairy farmers have given up quite a bit of market share and several other significant concessions in the last three major trade agreements. As the CUSMA review gets underway, DFC’s focus will be on ensuring that no more is given up.

What are the greatest benefits of supply management for dairy farmers?

Stability. Price stability helps farmers confidently plan and invest so they can focus on producing high-quality milk for the Canadian market.

Stability also benefits Canadians. It provides a consistent availability

of milk at predictable prices and slows down the consolidation you see in other countries. In my experience, consumers really appreciate that Canadian dairy comes from a family farm model, where the average herd size is lower than the larger farms seen in some other countries. These family farms help support rural communities and thousands of jobs across the supply chain.

How will your experience working on both sides of the border inform your work?

The time I spent in the U.S. gave me insight into how their system works –not just in theory but in the day-to-day. When we talk to American stakeholders, I can understand what they’re referring to, the issues they are facing and the context behind their positions. At the end of the day, they are farmers too and share many of our concerns when it comes to sustainability, innovation, and predictability. I believe that will help guide our discussions and find better outcomes.

What do you see as the strengths of the Canadian dairy sector?

One of our core strengths is our unity. We have one system, which allows for strong standards and better coordination on issues like animal health, sustainability, economics, and trade.

Plus, our sector’s priorities resonate with Canadians, especially as they relate to food security, food sovereignty, and strong rural communities.

None of this is possible, though, without farmers. Their commitment and hard work are the foundation for our sector’s strengths.

Les Producteurs laitiers du Canada (PLC) ont récemment accueilli

Annie AcMoody à titre de nouvelle cheffe de la direction. Mme AcMoody arrive à ce poste avec près de 20 ans d’expérience dans le domaine des politiques et de l’économie liées au secteur laitier. Pour en savoir plus à son sujet, voici ce qu’elle a répondu à quelques questions.

Quelle est votre expérience par rapport au secteur laitier, et comment cela vous a-t-il amené aux PLC?

Déjà quand j’étais jeune, le secteur laitier m’attirait. J’ai développé un grand intérêt pour le système lui-même : son fonctionnement, comment il permet de soutenir les producteurs, ses avantages pour les consommateurs et son évolution sous l’influence des politiques. J’ai même travaillé dans une ferme laitière pendant un été pour en apprendre davantage.

Depuis l’obtention de mon diplôme de maîtrise en agroéconomie, ma carrière s’est entièrement concentrée sur le secteur laitier. J’ai travaillé dans un département gouvernemental de la Californie en production laitière, puis dans une association de producteurs qui s’occupait de nombreux dossiers similaires à ceux des PLC : politique, durabilité et économie. Il y a cinq ans, j’ai eu la chance de mettre ma passion, mon intérêt et mon expérience au service de mon pays, le Canada, ayant accepté un poste axé sur les politiques au sein des PLC. Pour moi, c’était une occasion unique de travailler sur les politiques laitières d’une manière qui ferait une réelle différence pour les producteurs canadiens et notre secteur.

Dans ce nouveau poste, je m’engage à poursuivre dans cette voie. Je crois à l’importance fondamentale de ce que produisent les producteurs laitiers, et je crois au système qui leur permet de le faire. Je suis prête à me battre pour les intérêts collectifs du secteur et à travailler avec vous tous pour écrire le prochain grand chapitre de l’histoire de notre secteur.

Vous avez travaillé dans presque tous les domaines du secteur laitier. Avec cette expérience si diversifiée, quelle vision apportez-vous à ce nouveau poste?

Le pouvoir de la collaboration. Notre secteur bénéficie d’une incroyable diversité de perspectives et d’expériences.

On dit souvent en plaisantant que si vous réunissez 15 producteurs dans une pièce, vous obtiendrez 52 opinions différentes. Cela peut être vrai à première vue, mais lorsque vous prenez le temps d’écouter, vous constatez souvent que la plupart des gens travaillent pour atteindre les mêmes résultats. Selon vous, quels seront les principaux points d’intérêt pour les PLC au cours de l’année à venir?

Nous continuerons sans aucun doute à mettre l’accent sur le commerce et à défendre non seulement le gagne-pain des producteurs laitiers canadiens, mais aussi le rôle clé qu’ils jouent dans la souveraineté et la sécurité alimentaires de notre pays. Les producteurs laitiers canadiens ont dû céder une part substantielle du marché et ont fait plusieurs autres concessions importantes dans les trois derniers accords commerciaux majeurs. Alors que la révision de l’ACÉUM s’apprête à démarrer, les PLC travaillent à faire en sorte qu’il n’y ait pas d’autres concessions.

Quels sont les principaux avantages de la gestion de l’offre pour les producteurs laitiers?

La stabilité. La stabilité des prix aide les producteurs à planifier et à investir en toute confiance afin qu’ils puissent se concentrer sur la production de lait de grande qualité pour le marché canadien.

La stabilité profite également aux Canadiens. Elle assure une disponibilité constante du lait à des prix prévisibles et ralentit la consolidation que l’on observe dans d’autres pays. D’après mon expérience,

les consommateurs apprécient vraiment le fait que les produits laitiers canadiens proviennent d’un modèle de production familiale, où la taille moyenne du troupeau est inférieure à celle des grandes fermes que l’on trouve dans certains autres pays. Ces fermes familiales contribuent à soutenir les communautés rurales et à créer des milliers d’emplois tout au long de la chaîne d’approvisionnement.

Comment votre expérience de travail des deux côtés de la frontière vous sera-t-elle utile dans votre travail?

Le temps que j’ai passé aux États-Unis m’a permis de comprendre comment leur système fonctionne, non seulement en théorie, mais aussi au quotidien. Lorsque nous discutons avec les intervenants américains, je comprends ce à quoi ils font référence, les enjeux auxquels ils sont confrontés et le contexte qui sous-tend leurs positions. En fin de compte, ce sont aussi des producteurs et ils partagent bon nombre de nos préoccupations en matière de durabilité, d’innovation et de prévisibilité. Je pense que cela nous aidera à orienter nos discussions et à obtenir de meilleurs résultats.

Selon vous, quels sont les points forts du secteur laitier canadien?

L’un de nos principaux atouts est notre solidarité. Nous avons un système unique, ce qui permet d’avoir des normes rigoureuses et d’assurer une meilleure coordination sur des enjeux tels que la santé animale, la durabilité, l’économie et le commerce.

De plus, les priorités de notre secteur trouvent un écho auprès des Canadiens, en particulier lorsqu’elles concernent la sécurité alimentaire, la souveraineté alimentaire et la vitalité des communautés rurales.

Cependant, rien de tout cela ne serait possible sans les producteurs. Leur engagement et tout le travail qu’ils accomplissent sont les fondations de la force de notre secteur.

ALL IN A DAY’S WORK Balancing Jerseys, Sheep and Candles at Halfway Farms

Balancing the management of a dairy herd and a flock of sheep while raising two young children might sound like a heavy load. Add a handmade candle business, and for the MacKays of Halfway Farms in Mount Elgin, Ontario, it is just another Monday.

Farming is something Carmen and Hiske MacKay have always been a part of. Carmen grew up on a dairy farm, milking Holsteins. Hiske was born in the Netherlands and grew up on a farm before her family immigrated to Canada in 2000. The farm they settled on is still operated by her brother and parents today.

After purchasing what is now Halfway Farms from her father’s best friend in 2012, Hiske’s parents managed both

farms while Hiske completed her Animal Science degree at the University of Guelph and her brother finished school at Ridgetown.

In 2014, Hiske moved full-time to the new farm, and Carmen joined the operation a year later. Today, the couple runs the farm largely on their own, with occasional part-time help from a local teenager. Their daughters, Maelynn (7) and Carleigh (6), are already eager to help where they can around the farm, and Carleigh has already formed a strong connection to the animals.

THE JERSEYS

The dairy side of Halfway Farms is now made up of a 100% Jersey herd, a de -

liberate shift made around 2016 from crossbred cattle. Today, the herd totals approximately 120 head, with 66 cows currently milking. The decision to go all-in on Jerseys was both a personal choice and a practical one. Their smaller size and calm nature, especially compared to the “wild” crossbreds, make them a great fit for the farm’s tie-stall barn, and Hiske has always loved the breed.

Carmen, however, was initially more hesitant. His first experience with Jerseys came when working with only a few within a predominantly Holstein herd, where the facilities were better suited to larger cattle. But since transitioning to an all-Jersey herd, his per-

spective has changed. He now finds that managing one consistent breed is far smoother than working with a mixed group, and the Jerseys have become a natural fit for their operation.

That consistency proves itself in the herd’s performance. Production averages around 24 kg of milk per cow per day, with components of 1.3 kg of fat and 1 kg of protein and a BCA score of 254–254–268. The herd is also performing well in classification, with the majority scoring Very Good or higher (6ME, 5E, 33VG, 17GP 2G).

Two cows from the Rich Valley herd, Rich Valley B Fire Olay 239 and Rich Valley SZ Moment Valda 260, were acquired with the help of Paul Franken (PAULLOR) and have become the foundation of nearly half of the herd at Halfway Farms. Olay’s daughter, Halfway Colton Okie Dokie, is Hiske’s all-time favourite cow. A consistent standout, she has already produced six heifer calves and is currently pregnant with her seventh.

LE TRAVAIL QUOTIDIEN

Breeding decisions at Halfway Farms are guided by a simple principle: quality over quantity. The couple focuses on building strong cow families, selecting sires that balance type and production, and ensuring cattle remain functional in a tie-stall environment while still being pleasing to the eye. Sexed semen is used on top-end animals, while beef semen is reserved for lower-ranking cows.

THE SHEEP

Hiske grew up on farms with both sheep and cows, so it was only natural that she wanted to include sheep when building her own operation. In 2014, she purchased her first group using scholarship funds she received upon finishing her university program.

Today, the flock numbers around 75 to 80 head, primarily Suffolks with a few commercial animals. The longterm goal is to transition to a fully purebred Suffolk flock. Management follows

a beef-style model, where ewes raise their own lambs and simplicity is prioritized at every step.

The sheep are housed year-round in a large pack barn, though they have occasionally proven to be talented escape artists. Breeding decisions focus on easy lambing and strong mothering ability, with problem animals culled when necessary. Shearing is one of the few tasks the couple outsources and is handled by professionals, who can shear the entire flock in roughly six hours.

THE CANDLES

In 2019, while expecting their second child, Hiske found herself needing something to keep her busy while she was unable to take on her usual farm workload. She began making soy candles in the kitchen. Enjoying having an outlet away from the farm, the business grew, and the MacKay Candle Company was born.

In 2023, the candle operation moved into a dedicated workshop built as part of a home addition, complete with a garage and workspace. Every candle is still 100% handmade, and Hiske remains the sole operator. In addition to creating stock for her online store, she now sells her candles through multiple retailers, including one in Alberta and nearly a dozen across Ontario. One of these is Little Brown Cow in Brantford, a connection she made through the Jersey community. Her products include candles and wax melts with a variety of seasonal scents, and mason jars with fun quotes or definitions, perfect for gifting.

THE BALANCE

With dairy cows, sheep, candles, and two young children, time management is one of the farm’s biggest ongoing challenges. Workloads shift constantly with the seasons, school schedules,

and production cycles, so Hiske and Carmen are intentional about planning ahead. They aim to stagger demanding periods to avoid overlap.

To simplify the candle operation, Hiske has moved away from seasonal scent launches. Instead, new scents are released at the beginning of the year, reducing complexity and freeing up time. This approach allows her to be more available during lambing season, the busy summer months, and the harvest on their 100 acres of land, which they use to grow livestock feed.

Despite their full schedule, the family still makes time for activities off the farm. The girls are involved in extracurriculars year-round, including ringette, theatre, vaulting, and barrel racing. Both Carmen and Hiske have also contributed to their communities through board involvement. Carmen recently completed an eight-year term on the Oxford Jersey Club, and Hiske currently serves as

Vice President of the Ontario Equestrian Vaulting Association.

The days are full, but the couple’s focus remains simple: keeping things practical, raising quality livestock, and building systems that make day-today life sustainable. For now, there are no immediate plans to expand facilities, and long-term decisions will depend largely on whether their daughters choose to pursue farming themselves. Through thoughtful planning and a shared love of agriculture, Hiske and Carmen have found a balance that works for their family. And at Halfway Farms, that balance is all in a day’s work.

LES JERSEYS

Le côté laitier de Halfway Farms est maintenant composé d’un troupeau Jersey à 100 %, un virage délibéré fait aux environs de 2016 alors qu’ils avaient des animaux croisés. Aujourd’hui le troupeau compte environ 120 bêtes incluant les vaches, les veaux et les génisses, avec 66 vaches présentement en lactation. La décision d’aller vers les Jerseys était un choix personnel et pratique. Leur plus petite taille et leur nature calme, spécialement comparées à leurs mixtes ‘sauvages’ faisaient qu’elles s’adaptaient bien à l’étable entravée et Hiske a toujours aimé la race. Carmen, par contre, était plus hésitant. Il avait eu ses premières expériences avec les Jerseys alors qu’il avait travaillé avec quelques-unes dans un troupeau majoritairement Holstein où les installations étaient axées vers du plus gros bétail. Mais depuis la transition vers un troupeau tout-Jersey, sa perspective a changé. Il trouve que de gérer une seule race est beaucoup plus cohérent que de travailler avec un groupe mixte et que les Jerseys s’adaptent naturellement à leur opération.

Cette cohérence s’est transférée à la performance du troupeau. La production se situe en moyenne à 24 kg de lait par vache par jour avec des composantes de 1,3 kg de gras et 1 kg de protéine, une MCR de 254–254–268. Le troupeau performe bien aussi lors de la classification, avec la majorité obtenant un score de Très bonne ou mieux (6ME, 5E, 33TB, 17BP 2B).

Deux vaches du troupeau Rich Valley, Rich Valley B Fire Olay 239 et Rich Valley SZ Moment Valda 260, furent acquises avec l’aide de Paul Franken (PAULLOR) et sont devenues la base de presque tout le troupeau chez Halfway Farms. La fille d’Olay, Halfway Colton Okie Dokie, est la vache préférée de tous les temps d’Hiske. Elle se démarque constamment, ayant déjà produit six génisses et est gestante en ce moment de sa septième.

Les décisions d’élevage chez Halfway Farms sont guidées par un principe simple : qualité avant la quantité. Le couple mise sur la construction de familles de vaches solides, sélectionnant

des taureaux qui offrent l’équilibre entre la conformation et la production, et s’assurent que le bétail reste fonctionnel dans un environnement entravé tout en étant plaisant à regarder. La semence sexée est utilisée sur les meilleurs animaux alors que de la semence de bovins de boucherie est réservée pour les moins bonnes vaches.

LES MOUTONS

Hiske a grandi sur des fermes ayant tant des moutons que des vaches alors il était naturel qu’elle voulait inclure des moutons lorsqu’elle a établi sa propre entreprise. En 2014, elle a acheté son premier groupe en utilisant les fonds d’une bourse qu’elle a obtenu lorsqu’elle a terminé son programme universitaire.

Aujourd’hui son troupeau compte entre 75 et 80 bêtes, principalement des Suffolks avec quelques animaux commerciaux. Le but à long-terme est de faire la transition vers un troupeau Suffolk pur-sang. La gestion suit un modèle d’animaux de boucherie, où les brebis élèvent leurs propres agneaux et la simplicité est recherchée à chaque étape.

Les moutons sont logés toute l’année dans une grande étable sur litière accumulée, quoiqu’ils aient affaire quelques fois quelques maîtres de l’évasion. Les décisions d’élevage se concentrent surtout sur la facilité à l’agnelage et une forte fibre maternelle.

Les animaux à problèmes sont réformés lorsque nécessaire. La tonte est une des tâches pour laquelle le couple fait appel à du forfait et elle est faite par des professionnels qui peuvent tondre tout le troupeau dans environ six heures.

LES CHANDELLES

En 2019, alors qu’elle attendait leur deuxième enfant, Hiske cherchait quelque chose à faire alors qu’elle ne pouvait plus accomplir ses tâches habituelles à la ferme. Elle a commencé à fabriquer des chandelles de soya dans sa cuisine. Elle aimait avoir un intérêt non relié à la ferme. L’entreprise a grandi et la MacKay Candle Company est née.

En 2023, les opérations de fabrication de chandelles sont déménagées dans un atelier dédié, construit comme un ajout à la maison, avec garage et espace de travail. Chaque chandelle est faite à la main à 100 % et Hiske est la seule employée. En plus de créer de la marchandise pour son magasin en ligne, elle vend maintenant ses chandelles via plusieurs détaillants dont un en Alberta et presqu’une douzaine en Ontario. Un de ces détaillants est Little Brown Cow à Brantford, un contact qu’elle a fait grâce à la communauté Jersey. Elle vend des chandelle est des fontes de cire avec une variété de senteurs saisonnières ainsi que des pots Masons avec des citation amusantes ou des définitions, parfait pour des cadeaux.

L’ÉQUILIBRE

Avec les vaches laitières, les moutons, les chandelles et deux jeunes enfants, la gestion du temps est un des plus gros défis quotidiens de la ferme. Les charges de travail varient selon les saisons, les horaires scolaires et les cycles de production donc Hiske et Carmen planifient avec intention. Ils visent à échelonner les périodes occupées pour éviter le chevauchement.

Pour simplifier l’entreprise de chandelles, Hiske a discontinué le lancement de senteurs saisonnières. En remplacement, de nouvelles senteurs sont lancées au début de l’année, réduisant la complexité et libérant du temps. Cette approche lui permet d’être plus disponible lors de la saison d’agnelage, les mois d’été occupés et la récolte de leurs 100 acres de terre, qu’ils utilisent pour produire des aliments pour leur troupeau.

Malgré leur horaire chargé, la famille prend toujours du temps pour faire des activités hors de la ferme. Les filles participent toute l’année à des activités extracurriculaires incluant la ringuette, le théâtre, le saut à cheval et la course de barils. Carmen et Hiske ont aussi contribué à leur communauté par leur participation à des comités. Carmen a récemment complété un mandat de huit ans au Conseil de Oxford Jersey et Hiske siège présentement comme vice-présidente du Ontario Equestrian Vaulting Association.

Les journées sont remplies mais le couple se concentre sur des buts simples : garder les choses pratiques, élever du bétail de qualité, construire des systèmes qui rendent la vie de tous les jours agréable. Pour l’instant, il n’est pas question d’élargir les installations et les décisions à long-terme dépendront grandement de l’intérêt de leurs filles à poursuivre ou non en agriculture. Par une planification songée et un amour partagé de l’agriculture, Hiske et Carmen ont trouvé l’équilibre qui marche pour leur famille. Et chez Halfway Farms cet équilibre fait partie du travail quotidien.

Alicia Horne

Alicia is a hardworking, dedicated woman with a true passion for the dairy industry, but what really sets her apart is who she is as a person. At social gatherings, her laugh is always the biggest in the room, genuine, contagious, and impossible to miss. She brings that same energy and warmth into everything she does.

On the farm, Alicia is incredibly knowledgeable and thoughtful, always paying close attention to the small details while never losing sight of the bigger picture. She understands that success in the dairy industry comes from balancing care, precision, and long-term vision, and she approaches her work with both heart and intention. Her dedication isn’t just about hard work, it is about pride, passion, and a deep respect for the farm, and everyone involved.

Alicia est une femme travaillante, dévouée avec une vraie passion pour l’industrie laitière. Cependant, ce qui la démarque est ce qu’elle est comme personne. Lors de rencontres sociales, son rire est le plus grand dans la pièce, vrai, contagieux, impossible à manquer. Elle apporte la même énergie et la même chaleur dans tout ce qu’elle fait.

Sur la ferme, Alicia est très informée et attentionnée, portant toujours attention à tous les petits détails et ne quittant jamais des yeux la vue d’ensemble. Elle comprend que le succès dans l’industrie laitière vient du cœur et de l’intention. Son dévouement n’est pas que du travail acharné mais de la fierté, de la passion et un grand respect pour la ferme et toutes les personnes qui s’y rattachent.

We are proud to nominate Jennifer Waldroff for her outstanding contributions to the dairy industry. Her dedication and leadership have made a meaningful and lasting impact on those around her. Jennifer deserves this recognition for her ongoing commitment within various Ag related associations, specifically her role as the VP of 4-H Ontario, sponsorship of a Spirit Award to Stormont 4-H, and support in organizing and hosting a 4-H Calf Rally in Avonmore for the past many years. As a past 4-H member, she ensures local youth can show calves by providing animals from her own farm and encouraging the next generation of agricultural leaders.

Jennifer leads by example; she is always eager to take on new roles and support events across her community. She actively assists both the Stormont and Carleton Plowmen’s Associations, as well as the International Plowing Match, hosted annually by the Ontario Plowmen’s Association. Her involvement reflects a deep commitment to agriculture beyond her own operation.

Jennifer is a respected and generous leader. She is always willing to share her knowledge and support fellow women in agriculture, encouraging many to become ambassadors through the both the Jersey Ambassador and Queen of the Furrow program, both roles she herself previously held.

Jennifer has inspired both of us to continue to commit to our community; so together we can support the youth in our community and promote agriculture.

Son dévouement et son leadership sont laissé une empreinte significative et durable sur ceux qui l’entourent. Jennifer mène par l’exemple. Elle est toujours prête à prendre de nouveaux rôles et à supporter des événements dans sa communauté. Elle assiste activement les associations de laboureurs de Stormont et Carleton ainsi que le Concours international de labour tenu annuellement par l’association des laboureurs de l’Ontario. Son engagement reflète un grand engagement envers l’agriculture, au-delà de sa propre entreprise.

Jennifer est une leader respectée et généreuse. Elle est toujours prête à partager ses connaissances et supporter d’autres femmes en agriculture, encourageant plusieurs à devenir ambassadrice par les programmes d'ambassadeur Jersey et reine des labours, deux rôles qu’elle a elle-même déjà comblés.

Jennifer nous a toutes deux inspiré à continuer à nous engager dans notre communauté donc, ensemble nous pouvons appuyer la jeunesse de notre communauté et promouvoir l’agriculture.

On this International Women’s Day, I’d like to take a moment to highlight and recognize Rachel Poll’s work and all the great qualities she brings! She’s probably the most low key employee at Jersey Canada, but just as efficient and appreciated as anyone else on the team. Members from across the country notice her great work and how reliable she is, especially in Québec, where she communicates with French-speaking members excellently.

Even in the wider dairy industry, people have nothing but good things to say. The staff at Lactanet are more than happy with the answers and follow-ups Rachel gives them whenever they have questions about Jersey breed transfers or registrations.

And on a personal level, Rachel shows even more heart and determination as she cares for her child with a disability, which only increases our admiration for her. Bravo, Rachel, for your amazing work, your simplicity, and your great attitude!!!

En cette journée internationale de la femme j’aimerais souligner et reconnaître le travail et les qualités de Rachel Poll! Probablement la plus discrète des employés de l’associa -

tion Jersey Canada mais aussi efficace et apprécié que ses collègues. En effet, les membres de partout au pays apprécient son excellent travail et son efficacité et surtout au Québec car elle s’adresse aux membres francophones avec un français d’excellente qualité.

Même auprès des intervenants du secteur laitier les bons mots abondent, les techniciens Lactanet sont plus que satisfaits des réponses et suivis que Rachel leur donne quand ils ont des questions en lien avec les transferts et enregistrements de la race Jersey.

Du côté personnel Rachel démontre encore plus son grand cœur et sa volonté ayant un enfant handicapé à sa charge ce qui nous vaut toute notre admiration. Bravo pour ton excellent travail, ta simplicité et ta bonne humeur!!!

looks after the calves and the future of our herd daily as well as cleans and maintains the robots. Her bookkeeping is second to none. She helps others selflessly and expects nothing in return. She also volunteers with our schools and is a Gay Lea delegate. Everything Selena does for our farm and family she does wholeheartedly and we are so grateful for everything she does and the role model she is. She is more than worthy of this recognition.

Nous aimerions soumettre la candidature de notre épouse et mère, Selena Prinzen. Nous soumettons sa candidature pour tout ce qu’elle fait pour tout le monde.

Son travail sur la ferme, accomplissant ce qui doit être fait et bouchant les trous à la dernière minute est sous apprécié et souvent non reconnu. C’est la personne qui s’occupe quotidiennement des veaux et de l’avenir de notre troupeau en plus de nettoyer et maintenir les robots. Sa tenue de livres est sans égal. Elle aide les autres généreusement et sans rien attendre en retour. Elle est aussi bénévole dans nos écoles et comme déléguée Gay Lea.

Tout ce que Selena fait pour notre ferme et notre famille est fait avec son cœur et nous sommes reconnaissants pour tout ce qu’elle fait et pour le modèle qu’elle est pour les autres. Elle mérite grandement cette reconnaissance.

2026 PEI Breeder's Cup

Hosted by PEI Holstein the 2026 Breeder's Cup will take place on March 2nd and 3rd and will be judged by Brian Carscadden of Napanee, ON. This on-farm show features classes for both Holstein and Colour Breeds. The Colour Breed classes are for 1st lactation, 2nd lacation and 3rd+ lactation. The 2025 winner of the 1st & 2nd lactation class was Redview Matt Juliette EX90. Bred and owned at the time by Redview Jersey Dairy Farm Inc. and is now owned by Weeksdale Holsteins & Crackholm.

2026 Atlantic Spring Showcase

The 2026 Atlantic Spring showcase will take place on May 9th at the Coliseum Frederecton in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Holstein and Colour Breed classes will be judged by Mandi Bue of Freedom, Wisconsin.
