Jersey Canada has long of supported youth in the dairy industry through our committees and initiatives. Our Youth Scholarship program was introduced in 1987, with the first two recipients, Patricia McMahon Scott and John Brand Jr., each receiving $250. Three years later, the inaugural Jersey Young Achiever awards were announced, and the first recipients of that award were Thomas Lister, Grant Cole, Robin Flewwelling, Chris & Valerie Richardson, and Shelly Bos. These programs, and more created since then, are still in place; this past November Natalie Boonstoppel and Kyla Lewis were awarded $1,000 scholarships during the Royal Fair, and early in 2026 the Youth of Distinction, Young Achiever and Travel Bursary recipients will be chosen.

Early this year, Youth Committee and Marketing & Publications Committee members brainstormed fundraising ideas for the Jersey Youth Fund. The live auction at our 2025 AGM raised $1,700 towards the fund, and I’d like to thank the hosts, the Grand River Jersey Club, for their generous donation of another $1,300.

To keep the momentum going, a new “Jersey Youth” logo was created and a line of branded youth merchandise was launched in November at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Profits from every-

thing sold during the Royal’s 10-day run, both in-person and online, were being donated to the Youth Fund. In all, $1,800 was raised during that time.

It is heartening to see Jersey producers embracing these efforts to support youth in dairy, and is a perfect example of the value that member-based organizations bring to a community.

On a separate note, I would like to mention that Al Cunnington will be leaving the Jersey Canada / Jersey Ontario extension team. Al “officially” worked as our extension rep for the past two years, but he has been providing advice, education, mentorship and a kind ear to Ontario Jersey producers for much longer. He has helped several farms transition to 100% Jerseys and worked alongside many young breeders as they built award-winning herds (and himself also winning a Constructive Breeder award in 2014 with his wife Julie under their Aland prefix). Thank you, Al, for the care and attention you have offered.

En début d’année, les membres du comité jeunesse et du comité de marketing & publications ont cherché des idées de levées de fonds pour le fonds Jeunesse Jersey. Une vente aux enchères lors de l’AGA 2025 a permis d’amasser 1700 $ pour le fonds et j’aimerais remercier les hôtes, le Club Jersey de Grand River pour leur généreux don de 1300 $ supplémentaire.

Pour soutenir cet élan, un nouveau logo ‘Jersey Jeunesse’ fut créé et une ligne de produits corporatifs fut lancée en novembre à la Foire agricole Royale d’hiver. Les profits de toute la marchandise vendue pendant les 10 jours de la Royale, en personne et en ligne, seront remis au fonds jeunesse. En tout 1800 $ fut ramassé au cours de cette période.

Ça fait chaud au cœur de voir les producteurs Jerseys soutenir les efforts pour appuyer la jeunesse en agriculture et c’est un parfait exemple de la valeur qu’apporte à la communauté les organisations menées par des membres.

Sur un tout autre sujet, j’aimerais mentionner qu’Al Cunnington quittera l’équipe sur le terrain de Jersey Canada / Jersey Ontario. Al travaillait ‘officiellement’ comme représentant sur le terrain depuis les deux dernières années où il fournissait conseils, éducation, mentorat et une oreille attentive aux producteurs Jerseys de l’Ontario depuis beaucoup plus longtemps. Il a aidé plusieurs fermes à faire une transition vers les Jerseys à 100 % et a travaillé avec plusieurs jeunes éleveurs alors qu’ils bâtissaient des troupeaux méritants (et il a luimême remporté le prix d’Éleveur Émérite en 2014 avec son épouse Julie sous le préfixe Aland). Merci Al pour les soins et l’attention que tu as offert.

It’s hard to believe we’re approaching the end of another year! That being said, the St. Lawrence Valley Jersey Club is hard at work planning the Jersey Canada Annual General Meeting, which will be held March 27–29, 2026, in Ottawa, Ontario. One of the highlights will be a tour of the Senate of Canada with Senator Rob Black. Please note that this tour requires government-issued photo identification (e.g., passport, driver’s license, firearms licence, age of majority card). A reminder of this detail will be included in your AGM registration package in the weeks to come. We look forward to seeing you all in Ottawa!

It was a pleasure to attend the Jersey Canada Youth Showmanship and the National Jersey Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. I was overwhelmed by the number of participants in the Showmanship competition, and the quality of their skills was phenomenal! Congratulations to all the youth who participated. I am also amazed at how the quality of Jerseys exhibited at the National Jersey Show keeps improving each year. I would like to congratulate Vierra Dairy Farms on achieving Supreme Dairy Champion, what an incredible honor!

It was wonderful to see so many international Jersey breeders at the show, as well as the Plumpton College students who traveled from England to tour local Jersey farms and attend the RAWF. These students participated in Jersey Showmanship and assisted exhibitors with their show packs—a fantastic experience for them! Jersey Canada proudly showcased its new booth, featuring plenty of Jersey merchandise and information for spectators. The Dairy Farmers of Ontario also had an impressive Dairy Education Center with Jersey cows on display; it was wonderful to see!

Some exciting news to share, as of the end of October, registrations are at an all-time high! Keep them coming! After speaking with nutritionists throughout the year, I’m thrilled to hear how efficient Jerseys are and how well they’re milking in a variety of scenarios.

Once again, I would like to thank our Jersey Canada staff, volunteers, and breeders for their dedication to the breed. Cheers to a happy new year and Merry Christmas!

l’exposition nationale Jersey qui semble s’améliorer chaque année. J’aimerais féliciter Vierra Dairy Farms pour le titre de Championne Suprême Laitier –quel honneur incroyable!

C’est difficile à croire mais nous sommes déjà presqu’à la fin d’une autre année! Ceci étant dit, le club Jersey de la Vallée du St-Laurent travaille avec acharnement à la planification de l’assemblée générale annuelle qui se tiendra du 27 au 29 mars 2026 à Ottawa, Ontario. Un des points forts sera une visite du Sénat du Canada avec le Sénateur Rob Black. Veuillez prendre note que si vous voulez participer à cette visite, vous devez avoir en main une pièce d’identité officielle (ex. passeport, permis de conduire, permis de port d’armes, carte officielle émise par un gouvernement). Un rappel sera inclus dans votre trousse d’inscription pour l’AGA dans les semaines à venir. Nous avons hâte de vous voir tous à Ottawa!

Ce fut un plaisir d’assister à la compétition de présentation jeunesse de Jersey Canada lors de l’exposition nationale Jersey à la Foire agricole Royale d’hiver. J’étais époustouflé par le nombre de participants dans la compétition de présentation et la qualité de leurs habiletés était phénoménale! Félicitations à tous les jeunes qui y ont participé. J’étais aussi ébloui par la qualité des Jerseys présentées dans

C’était merveilleux de voir tant d’éleveurs de Jerseys internationaux à l’exposition ainsi que les étudiants de Plumpton College qui sont venus de l’Angleterre pour visiter nos fermes Jerseys locales et assister à la Royale. Ces étudiants ont participé à la présentation Jersey et ont aidé les exposants avec leurs animaux – une expérience fantastique pour eux! Jersey Canada a fièrement présenté son nouveau kiosque mettant en vedette beaucoup de produits dérivés Jerseys et de l’information pour les spectateurs. Les producteurs laitiers de l’Ontario avaient aussi un impressionnant centre éducatif laitier avec en vedette des vaches Jerseys. C’était merveilleux à voir!

Quelques nouvelles excitantes à partager. À la fin octobre, les enregistrements étaient à un nombre record! Continuez à nous les envoyer! Après des discussions avec des nutritionnistes tout au long de l’année, je suis heureux d’entendre combien les Jerseys sont efficaces et qu’elles produisent bien dans plusieurs scénarios.

Encore une fois, j’aimerais remercier notre personnel de Jersey Canada, les bénévoles et les éleveurs pour leur dévouement envers la race. Meilleurs vœux pour une joyeuse nouvelle année et Joyeux Noël !

SCHOLARSHIPS / BOURSE D'ÉTUDES

2025 Jersey Canada Youth Scholarships Bourses d'études jeunesse 2025 de Jersey Canada

Natalie Boonstoppel is in her fourth and final year at the University of Saskatchewan, completing a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness with a minor in Field Crop Production. Her program combines business management and crop production, preparing her for her long-term goal of owning and operating a progressive dairy farm.

Natalie has been deeply involved with Jerseys through showing and on-farm responsibilities. She has represented Team

Kyla Lewis recently graduated from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Animal Biology through the Ontario Agricultural College. This fall, she began a two-year, thesis-based master’s program focused on dairy nutrition.

Kyla’s passion for the dairy industry is evident through her 12 years in 4-H, where she has shown Jerseys at local,

Manitoba at the Western Canadian Classic for seven years and recently earned the title of Grand Showman with her Jersey heifer, Groundzero Bright Kite. A longtime 4-H member, Natalie’s passion for the breed began in dairy clubs and continues to grow through her work with breeding decisions and show preparation.

After graduation, Natalie plans to gain international dairy experience before returning to her home farm, where she hopes to expand the Jersey presence and focus on genetics, sustainability, and herd development.

After completing her master’s degree, Kyla plans to pursue a career as a dairy nutritionist, working alongside producers to improve calf and heifer management while continuing to be involved in research to advance management practices and nutritional support on farms.

Kyla a récemment gradué de l’Université de Guelph avec un Baccalauréat en Science, majeure en Biologie animale via l’Ontario Agricultural College Cet automne, elle a commencé un programme de maîtrise de

cultures, la préparant pour son but à long-terme de posséder et gérer une ferme laitière progressive.

Looking for travel assistance? Jersey Canada offers a unique financial assistance program geared toward Jersey breeders, to make it easier for out-of-province young people to attend the Jersey Canada AGM. The 2026 AGM takes place March 27-29, 2026 in Ottawa, Ontario.

Three $1,000 travel bursaries are available for applicants between 18 and 35 to individuals in the following regions: Jersey West, Jersey Quebec and Jersey Atlantic. To apply please submit a letter detailing the following OR download the form on jerseycanada.com/agm:

What are the most common accidents or injuries that occur on farms?

R: According to data from the Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting program, most fatal farm injuries involve machinery. Runovers and rollovers are unfortunately the top causes of death on farms, and young children, especially those under four, are at risk of being run over. Collisions between motor vehicles and farm machinery are also a common cause of serious and fatal injuries.

How can small family farms improve safety without major costs?

R: There are some great free or lowcost resources out there, like CASA’s Canada FarmSafe Plan , which helps farmers identify and deal with hazards around the farm. Local and provincial organizations also have their own versions and can offer good advice.

One simple thing people can do is go on farm safety walkabouts during slower times. Take a good look around and talk about hazards can be fixed or improved. Follow the hierarchy of hazard control and start by eliminating or substituting hazards where possible, then look at engineering or administrative fixes, and finally, make sure you’ve got the right personal protective equipment.

Just as important is keeping communication open. Everyone, from kids to grandparents, should feel comfortable

Robin Anderson grew up on a farm in south-central Saskatchewan. She developed a passion for farm safety and health at a young age, joining the Saskatchewan Safety Council’s Power Pac Program as a youth ambassador for farm and urban safety. Robin continued to pursue her passion for farming communities after university (University of Saskatchewan, B.A.), joining the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region as the Farm Safety Coordinator, eventually moving to Health Promotion Coordinator. After two relocations, Robin joined the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) in 2014 in a communications role. She has continued to work to improve the safety and health of farmers, farm families, farm workers and farming communities through her work at CASA as the Director of Programs and Communications.

What are some emerging safety risks that farms should be aware of?

R: Technology on farms is changing fast, and while that’s exciting, it can also create new safety challenges. Learning how to properly use new equipment or software is important to avoid unintended consequences. Training and reminders and competent supervision can go a long way in keeping everyone efficient and safe.

We’re also seeing more extreme weather and natural emergencies across Canada, such as floods, wildfires, and

storms, and those can seriously affect farm operations and safety. These emergencies can threaten the well-being of both human and animal lives so addressing those concerns and having plans in place goes a long way.

Another factor is that farmers, on average, are getting older, so things like slower reaction times or mobility issues can come into play. Being aware of these changes and planning for these changes, can help keep farmers doing what they love best – farming.

What kinds of farm safety training programs or workshops are available?

R: CASA offers a variety of online safety courses. However, it’s also worth checking with your local or provincial farm safety organizations.

National Jersey Show L'Exposition national de Jersey

The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair has taken place in Toronto for 103 years. As Canada’s largest indoor fair, it welcomes visitors from around the world to experience its many events, including horse, beef, and dairy shows.

The Jersey portion of the dairy shows began on Friday, November 14, with the Jersey Canada Youth Showmanship Competition. This year’s competition saw the highest participation since its inception in 1983, with 74 young show people entering the ring throughout the evening. Congratulations to Emma Lewis for earning the title of Grand Champion Showperson.

The National Jersey Show kicked off early on Saturday, November 15, and by the end of the day, Judge Kelly Barbee and his associate Louie Cozzitorto had placed 289 animals. Stoney Point Joel Bailey, owned by Vierra Dairy Farms in Hilmar, California, claimed not only Grand Champion of the National Jersey Show, but also the title of Supreme Dairy Champion of the Royal.

La Foire agricole Royale d’hiver a lieu à Toronto depuis 103 ans. C’est la plus importante foire intérieure du Canada et accueille des visiteurs de partout au monde pour participer aux nombreux événements incluant des expositions de chevaux, de bovins de boucherie et laitiers.

La portion Jersey des expositions laitières a débuté le vendredi 14 novembre avec la compétition de présentation jeunesse Jersey Canada. La compétition de cette année présentait le plus grand nombre de participants depuis sa création en 1983 avec 74 jeunes gens paradant dans l’arène pendant la soirée. Félicitations à Emma Lewis for qui a remporté le titre de Grande Championne.

L’exposition nationale Jersey a débuté tôt le samedi 15 novembre et, à la fin de la journée, le juge Kelly Barbee et son associé, Louie Cozzitorto avaient placé 289 animaux. Few couples embody the spirit of dedication, mentorship, and passion for the Jersey breed as profoundly as Douglas and Jill Robinson. Together, they have been pillars of the Canadian dairy community, tireless promoters of Jerseys, and mentors to countless young farmers. Their journey, which began in childhood for Douglas and grew into a shared life’s work with Jill, has blossomed into a legacy that continues to inspire. This year, their contributions have been recognized jointly with the Clifton Berry Jersey Ambassador Award, a fitting tribute to two people whose lives have been devoted to advancing the breed and supporting the people around it.

EARLY BEGINNINGS

Douglas' story with Jerseys began at the age of three, when a mentor introduced him to the breed. By four, he was already showing his first calf at the St. Lawrence Valley Jersey Club Calf Rally. That early experience sparked a lifelong passion. From the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair to the Stormont County Fair, Douglas became a familiar face in show rings across Ontario, Quebec, and beyond. His enthusiasm was evident not only in his participation but in the way he carried himself—always eager to learn, always proud to represent the Jersey breed.

Jill has been by his side throughout this journey, supporting the farm, the family, and the countless commitments that come with being leaders in the Jersey community. Her presence has been integral, ensuring that Douglas' vision was matched with stability, encouragement, and her own contributions to the breed and the wider community.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE SHOW RING

Over the years, Douglas' Jerseys have earned recognition at some of Canada’s most prestigious events. He was named Jersey Canada Champion Junior Judge of

the All-Canadian Judging Contest and received the Jersey Young Achievers Award. His farm was honored with the Stormont County Farmer of the Year Award and the Farm Credit Canada National Customer Spotlight Award. For five consecutive years, he achieved Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor titles at the EO/WQ Jersey Championship Show, and he has earned similar honors at the Stormont County Fair and provincial shows in Quebec and Prince Edward Island.

Douglas bred animals that achieved international acclaim, including the #1 type Jersey bull in Canada for five years. One of his daughters went on to be named Supreme Champion twice at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. In 2015, he bred Payneside Mac N Cheese, a cow that sold for a world-record price at a live auction. Her full brother, Payneside Game Changer, ranked among the top type bulls in Canada. In total, Douglas has bred 27 Jerseys that placed in the top eight at the World Dairy Expo—an extraordinary achievement that speaks to his skill, vision, and commitment.

JILL’S CONTRIBUTIONS & RECOGNITION

While Douglas' accomplishments in the show ring are remarkable, Jill’s contribu-

tions to the community have been equally impactful. In 2021, she was honored with the Stormont County Award of Merit, recognizing her as an individual who has shown outstanding dedication and service to her community. The following year, she received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medallion, awarded by peers and neighbors in Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry, Cornwall, and Akwesasne for her commitment to community service. Her warmth and positivity have long been admired. As Russell Gammon so often says, Jill is “Human Sunshine”—a phrase that perfectly captures her ability to brighten every room she enters and uplift those around her. These honors reflect Jill’s tireless efforts to support not only the Jersey breed but also the broader agricultural and local communities. Her leadership, compassion, and willingness to serve have made her a role model in her own right. Together with Douglas, she has helped host countless events, welcome visitors from around the world, and ensure that their farm remains a place of learning, innovation, and hospitality.

MENTORSHIP, LEADERSHIP, AND FAMILY

As a Stormont County 4-H leader, Douglas has loaned calves to young members,

hosted clinics on washing, clipping, and showmanship, and encouraged the 4-H motto “Learn to Do by Doing.” Jill has been a constant supporter of these efforts, ensuring that the farm was always a welcoming place for youth to learn and grow. Their shared commitment to mentorship has opened doors for countless young farmers, many of whom went on to become lifelong Jersey enthusiasts.

Douglas' leadership extended to organizational roles as past-president and current director of the St. Lawrence Valley Jersey Club, President of Jersey Canada, and member of multiple marketing and cattle committees. He also currently serves on the Winchester District Memorial Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, further demonstrating his commitment to community service beyond farming.

Their family has been central to this journey. Their two wonderful boys, Dougie (22) and Bobby (19), have grown up immersed in the Jersey world. They have learned so much from their parents and already embody the same qualities of dedication, kindness, and passion for the breed. Like Douglas and Jill, they are enthusiastic ambassadors for Jerseys, ensuring that the Robinson legacy will continue for generations to come.

PROMOTERS OF INNOVATION

In 2016, the Robinsons renovated their barn and installed two DeLaval robotic milking systems, showcasing how well Jerseys adapt to modern technology. Visitors to their farm quickly realized the efficiency and success of Jerseys in robotic systems, reinforcing their role as promoters of both the breed and the future of dairy farming.

Douglas has been deeply engaged in exploring the benefits of A2 milk and the environmental advantages of Jerseys’ smaller carbon footprint. Jill has supported these endeavors, ensuring that their farm remains a place where tradition and innovation coexist harmoniously.

AMBASSADORS FOR JERSEYS

Together, Douglas and Jill have worked tirelessly to promote Jerseys. They have sponsored awards at local fairs and 4-H

shows, advertised in national magazines, and maintained a farm Facebook page to share updates and insights. They have hosted numerous tours, including the World Jersey Cattle Bureau Conference group in 2005, Jersey Ontario’s annual meeting car tour, and visits from colleges and international organizations such as Semex and Select Sires Inc.

One of Douglas' most memorable moments came in 2000, when he was photographed with the Stanley Cup alongside Payneside Amedeo Oklahoma, a Jersey cow drinking from the trophy. The image brought worldwide attention to the breed and remains a highlight of his career. Jill’s steady presence ensured that such moments were not only celebrated but also shared widely, amplifying their impact.

A SHARED LEGACY

Douglas' journey has been shaped by mentors like Clifton Berry, a long-time friend of Payneside Farms. Clifton was admired as a family man, community supporter, and ambassador for Jerseys. Douglas and Jill have strived to embody those same qualities, building a life that balances family, farming, and service. Their joint nomination and recognition for the Clifton Berry Jersey Ambassador Award reflects not only their accomplishments but also their character.

Together, they have been role models—people who inspire others through their actions, their kindness, and their unwavering commitment to the Jersey breed. Their legacy is not just in the Jerseys they have bred or the awards they have won, but in the people they have mentored, the communities they have strengthened, and the future they have helped shape.

Peu de couples sont à l’image du dévouement, du mentorat et de la passion pour la race Jersey autant que Douglas et Jill Robinson. Ensemble, ils ont été des piliers de la communauté laitière canadienne, faisant sans relâche la promotion des Jerseys et aidant de nombreux jeunes agriculteurs. Leur démarche a commencé dans l’enfance pour Douglas, qui a grandi pour partager son travail avec Jill et qui s’est transformé en un héri-

Jill est à ses côtés dans ses activités, supportant la ferme, la famille et les engagements innombrables qui viennent automatiquement lors que vous êtes un leader dans la communauté Jersey. Sa présence fut intégrale, s’assurant que la vision de Douglas était appuyée de stabilité, d’encouragements et de ses propres contributions à la race et à la communauté.

ACCOMPLISSEMENTS DANS L’ARÈNE D’EXPOSITION

Au fil des ans, les Jerseys de Douglas ont remporté plusieurs reconnaissances à certains des plus prestigieux événements du Canada. Il fut nommé Champion Juge Junior Jersey Canada du concours de jugement Tout Canadien et a reçu le prix Jeune Méritant Jersey. Sa ferme fut honorée du titre d’agriculteur de l’année du comté de Stormont et du National Customer Spotlight Award (prix national du client vedette) de Financement agricole Canada. Pendant cinq années consécutives, il a obtenu les titres de Premier Éleveur et Premier Exposant à l’exposition de championnat Jersey EO/OQ et a obtenu des honneurs similaires à la foire du comté de Stormont et à des exposi-

tions provinciales au Québec et à l’Île-duPrince-Édouard.

Douglas a produit des animaux qui ont atteint un succès international dont le taureau Jersey no. 1 pour la conformation au Canada pendant cinq ans. Une de ses filles fut nommée Championne Suprême à deux reprises à la Foire agricole Royale d’hiver. En 2015, il a produit Payneside Mac N Cheese, une vache qui a obtenu un prix record de vente à l’encan. Son frère complet, Payneside Game Changer, est classé parmi les meilleurs taureaux pour la conformation au Canada. En tout, Douglas a produit 27 Jerseys qui se sont placées dans le top 8 à la World Dairy Expo—un accomplissement extraordinaire qui témoigne de ses habiletés, sa vision et de son engagement.

LA CONTRIBUTION ET LES RECONNAISSANCES

DE JILL

Alors que les accomplissements de Douglas dans l’arène d’exposition sont remarquables, les contributions de Jill à la communauté on tout aussi eu un impact. En 2021 elle fut honorée du Prix du Mérite du comté de Stormont, la reconnaissant en tant qu’individu qui a démontré un grand dévouement et un service remarquable envers sa communauté. L’année suivante elle a reçu le Médaillon du jubilé de la Reine Elizabeth II, prix remix par ses pairs et voisins de Stormont, Dundas et Glengarry, Cornwall et Akwesasne pour son dévouement aux services communautaires.

Sa chaleur et sa positivité ont longuement été admirés. Comme le dit souvent Russell Gammon, Jill est un ‘rayon de soleil’ – un énoncé qui capture parfaitement sa capacité à ensoleiller chaque pièce où elle entre et à édifier ceux qui l’entourent. Ces honneurs reflètent les efforts soutenus de Jill pour supporter non seulement la race Jersey mais aussi l’agriculture en général et les communautés locales. Son leadership, sa compassion et sa volonté de servir font d’elle un modèle à suivre. Avec Douglas, elle a aidé à tenir de multitudes d’événements, a accueilli de nombreux visiteurs de partout dans le monde et s’est assurée que leur ferme demeurent un endroit d’apprentissage, d’innovation et d’hospitalité.

MENTORAT, LEADERSHIP ET FAMILLE

En tant que leader 4-H du comté de Stormont, Douglas a prêté des veaux à de jeunes membres, a tenus des cliniques sur le lavage et la tonte des animaux, sur la présentation et a encouragé la devise 4-H « apprendre à faire en faisant. » Jill fut toujours là à l’appuyer dans ses efforts, s’assurant que la ferme soit toujours accueillante pour qu’un jeune puisse apprendre et grandir. Leur engagement partagé au mentorat a ouvert les portes à d’innombrables jeunes agriculteurs, plusieurs devenant des adeptes de Jerseys pour la vie.

Le leadership de Douglas s’étend aux rôles organisationnels comme ancien président et administrateur actif du club Jersey de la vallée du St-Laurent, administrateur de Jersey Canada, Président du comité des expositions canadiennes et membre de plusieurs comités de marketing et de bovins. Il siège présentement au conseil d’administration du Winchester District Memorial Hospital Foundation (fondation de l’hôpital Memorial de district de Winchester) démontrant encore une fois son engagement communautaire au-delà de l’agriculture.

Leur famille fut au centre de leur parcours. Leurs deux merveilleux fils, Dougie (22) et Bobby (19), ont grandi immergé dans le monde Jersey. Ils ont beaucoup appris de leurs parents et démontrent déjà les mêmes qualités de dévouement, de gentillesse et de passion pour la race. Comme Douglas et Jill, ils sont des ambassadeurs enthousiastes pour les Jerseys, s’assurant que l’héritage des Robinson continuera pour les générations à venir.

PROMOUVOIR L’INNOVATION

En 2016, les Robinson ont rénové leur étable et ont installé deux systèmes de traite robotisés DeLaval, démontrant la facilité des Jerseys à s’adapter à la technologie moderne. Les visiteurs ont rapidement réalisé l’efficacité et le succès des Jerseys dans un système robotisé, renforçant leur rôle comme promoteurs de la race et de l’avenir de la production laitière. Douglas est très engagé dans l’exploration des bénéfices du lait A2 et les avantages environnementaux de la plus faible empreinte carbonique des Jerseys. Jill a

supporté ces initiatives, s’assurant que leur ferme soit toujours un endroit où la tradition et l’innovation coexistent en harmonie.

LEARN TO DO BY DOING FRIENDSHIPS

Carly has made significant friendships through her involvement in 4-H. Over the last seven years she has been able to meet many new people from her own club and others. She always looks forward to going to meetings, events and shows to reconnect with people. She loves working with her calf and travelling to all the different shows. Being able to do that with friends is always a bonus.

THE FUTURE

Despite growing up in a town setting, being a part of dairy 4-H has opened a lot of doors into agriculture for Carly. She has goals set to remain in agriculture and is looking into her options to achieve them.

The Lothmann’s have both Holsteins and Jerseys, so when Carly first started showing she started with a Holstein. She showed her first Jersey four years ago and has since, feeling a stronger connection to the Jersey breed, mostly due to their shared stubbornness. Her heifer for the 2025 show season, Liberty Gen NS Video Vanna, was purchased by the Lothmann’s after the 2024 National Jersey Show, and as she developed over the winter was an obvious choice to be Carly’s 4-H project for the year.

When Carly was in grade 5, Brenda Lothmann did a presentation about dairy farming at her school. The part of her presentation that touched on 4-H and showing dairy cattle piqued Carly’s interest and she went home and asked her mom if she could do it. Since they lived in town, Carly’s mom reached out Brenda and so Carly’s 4-H career began. She joined the Dufferin 4-H Dairy club and, embracing the 4-H motto, is learning the dairy industry by working on the Lothmann farm doing chores and showing.

En plus de l’industrie laitière les 4-H ont permis à Carly d’apprendre la responsabilité, l’art oratoire, le jugement et l’engagement communautaire. Cependant, il y a toujours de la place pour en apprendre plus et Carly aimerait peaufiner ses habiletés de tonte et de préparation des animaux.

L’EFFET JERSEY

APPRENDRE À FAIRE EN FAISANT AMITIÉS

Carly s’est fait de bons amis par sa participation aux 4-H. Au cours des sept dernières années, elle a pu rencontrer plusieurs personnes de son club et d’autres clubs. Elle a toujours hâte d’aller aux réunions, événements et expositions pour retrouver ces gens. Elle aime travailler avec son veau et voyager aux différentes expositions. Pouvoir faire tout ça avec des amis est toujours un plus.

L’AVENIR

Malgré le fait qu’elle a grandi dans un village, faire partie des 4-H laitiers a ouvert beaucoup de portes en agriculture pour Carly. Elle planifie rester en agriculture et étudie ses options pour y arriver.

Les Lothmann ont des Holsteins et de Jerseys donc, quand Carly a commencé à présenter, elle a débuté avec une Holstein. Elle a présenté sa première Jersey il y a quatre ans et depuis, elle ressent une meilleure connexion avec la race Jersey, probablement grâce à leur entêtement commun. Sa génisse pour la saison d’exposition 2025, Liberty Gen NS Video Vanna, fut achetée par les Lothmann après l’exposition nationale Jersey 2024. Elle s’est développée pendant l’hiver et c’était un choix naturel pour le projet 4-H de Carly pour l’année.

Lorsque Carly était en 5e année, Brenda Lothmann a fait une présentation au sujet de la production laitière à son école. La section de sa présentation qui parlait de 4-H a soulevé l’intérêt de Carly et lorsqu’elle est retournée à la maison, elle a demandé à sa mère si elle pouvait participer. Comme elle ne vivait pas sur une ferme, la mère de Carly a contacté Brenda et la carrière 4-H de Carly a débuté. Elle s’est jointe au club 4-H laitier Dufferin, a adopté la devise des 4-H et en apprend sur l’industrie laitière en travaillant sur la ferme des Lothmann, en faisant les tâches et présentant des animaux.

DAIRY FARMERS OF CANADA LOOKS TOWARDS COMING YEAR BUILT ON STRONG ADVOCACY IN 2025

Over the past year, Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) collaborated with farmers, industry leaders, and the provincial associations to develop advocacy initiatives that responded to 2025’s challenges and prepared the industry for 2026.

Pride in Canadian dairy & our farmers

In the fall, DFC showed how important the dairy industry was to Canada ahead of the planned 2026 review of the Canada-United StatesMexico Agreement (CUSMA). We launched an extensive education campaign aimed at both parliamentarians and the public, highlighting the benefits of supply management and the importance of the government’s promise to defend the dairy system in all negotiations.

In addition to participating in many industry and government meetings and events related to international trade issues, in November, DFC filed a CUSMA review submission on behalf its members with Global Affairs Canada and appeared as a witness before the House of Commons International Trade Committee during its study.

On top of its initiatives, DFC also rallied members of the dairy sector to participate in the Government’s CUSMA consultations this past fall. Thousands of farmers and industry members made their voices heard by sending letters to Global Affairs Canada in support of supply management through DFC’s OurCountryOurMilk.ca website

Following advocacy by DFC and other stakeholders, significant progress was made towards Canada’s first foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine bank in 2025. In June, the first contracts to establish this bank were awarded. Two companies will supply multiple types of vaccine products to build up the vaccine bank.

Progress continued towards improving access to a wider variety of veterinary healthcare tools to help reduce antimicrobial resistance. The federal government’s Red Tape Review Progress Report, published in September, reflects recommendations proposed by DFC and a coalition of other national stakeholders within the joint White Paper on Access to Veterinary Healthcare Tools. This includes relying on decisions made by foreign regulators to urgently facilitate the entry of needed veterinary drugs into Canada, a key recommendation from the White Paper and high priority within DFC’s recent lobby efforts.

Expanding farmer resources

Earlier this year, DFC was proud to unveil its new Student Program for students and postdoctoral researchers involved in DFC-funded research projects. This initiative is designed to help bridge the gap between research and real-world applications. Students receive access to networking and training events, knowledge translation and transfer activities, and recognition for their valuable contributions to the future of the Canadian dairy sector.

In September, DFC unveiled the newly developed Canadian Dairy Hub website with Lactanet and partners from across the dairy industry. Intended to turn the latest dairy research into accessible information, the new Canadian Dairy Hub is a bilingual online platform that gives dairy farmers practical, science-based resources such as videos, factsheets, webinars, and other tools.

Advocating for dairy on the international stage

DFC delegations represented the Canadian dairy sector at several high-profile international conferences. In May, DFC representatives were invited to speak on a panel at the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN)’s 26th Annual Conference on the Dairy Campus in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. The IFCN is a diverse network of academia, farmer organizations, and government partners from all over the world to share information for better decision-making.

The DFC team used the opportunity to explain supply management before an international audience, expanding on how this system helped minimize market disruptions caused by tariffs while also supporting Canadians in choosing local products.

A DFC team also attended the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) second Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation, September 29 to October 1. DFC discussed Canadian dairy’s continued leadership in sustainable livestock practices with the Assistant Director-General, Director of the Animal Production and Health Division, and with the Chief Veterinarian at the FAO.

En 2025, les Producteurs laitiers du Canada (PLC) ont collaboré avec les producteurs, les leaders du secteur et les associations provinciales afin d’élaborer des activités de sensibilisation visant à réagir aux difficultés de l’année précédente et à préparer l’industrie pour 2026.

Nos producteurs et les produits laitiers canadiens inspirent une grande fierté

Nous avons montré l’importance du secteur laitier pour le Canada avant que ne démarre la révision de l’Accord Canada-États-UnisMexique (ACÉUM), prévue cette année. L’automne dernier, les PLC ont lancé une vaste campagne d’information destinée aux parlementaires et au grand public, soulignant les avantages de la gestion de l’offre et l’importance de la promesse du gouvernement de défendre le système du secteur laitier dans toutes les négociations. En plus de participer à de nombreuses réunions et événements liés aux questions de commerce international organisés par l’industrie et le gouvernement, les PLC ont déposé en novembre, au nom de leurs membres, une demande de révision de l’ACÉUM auprès d’Affaires mondiales Canada et ont témoigné devant le Comité des Affaires étrangères et du commerce international de la Chambre des communes lors de son étude.

En plus de ces initiatives, les PLC ont également mobilisé les membres du secteur laitier afin qu’ils participent à la consultation du gouvernement sur l’ACÉUM l’automne dernier. Près de 5 000 producteurs et membres du secteur ont fait entendre leur voix en envoyant des lettres à Affaires mondiales Canada pour soutenir la gestion de l’offre par l’intermédiaire du site web « lelaitproduitici.ca » des PLC.

Banque de vaccins contre la fièvre aphteuse et accès aux outils de soins de santé vétérinaire

À la suite des efforts de sensibilisation déployés par les PLC et d’autres intervenants, des progrès importants ont été réalisés en vue de la création de la première banque de vaccins contre la fièvre aphteuse au Canada en 2025. En juin, les premiers contrats pour la création de cette banque ont été attribués. Deux entreprises fourniront plusieurs types de vaccins afin de constituer la banque de vaccins. Les progrès se sont poursuivis en vue d’améliorer l’accès à une plus grande variété d’outils de soins de santé vétérinaire afin de réduire la résistance aux antimicrobiens. Les rapports d’étape de l’Examen du fardeau administratif du gouvernement fédéral, publiés en septembre dernier, reflètent les recommandations proposées par les PLC et une coalition d’autres intervenants nationaux dans le Livre blanc conjoint sur l’accès aux outils de soins de santé vétérinaire. Il s’agit notamment de s’appuyer sur les décisions prises par les organismes de réglementation étrangers pour faciliter de toute urgence l’entrée des médicaments vétérinaires nécessaires au Canada, une recommandation clé du Livre blanc et une priorité absolue exprimée lors des récentes activités de lobbying des PLC.

davantage de ressources aux producteurs

En juin 2025, les PLC étaient fiers de dévoiler leur nouveau Programme Étudiant destiné aux étudiants et aux chercheurs postdoctoraux participant à des projets de recherche financés par les PLC. Ce projet vise à combler le fossé entre la recherche et les applications concrètes. Les étudiants ont accès à des événements de réseautage et de formation, à des activités de vulgarisation et de transfert des connaissances, et voient ainsi reconnues leurs précieuses contributions à l’avenir du secteur laitier canadien. En septembre dernier, les PLC ont dévoilé le nouveau site web, le Pôle laitier canadien, développé en collaboration avec Lactanet et des partenaires du secteur laitier. Visant à transformer les derniers résultats de recherche sur les produits laitiers en informations accessibles, le nouveau Pôle laitier canadien est une plateforme en ligne bilingue qui offre aux producteurs laitiers des ressources pratiques et scientifiques telles que des vidéos, des fiches d’information, des webinaires et d’autres outils.

Promouvoir les produits laitiers sur la scène internationale

Des délégations des PLC ont représenté le secteur laitier canadien lors de plusieurs conférences internationales de haut niveau. En mai dernier, des représentants des PLC ont été invités à prendre la parole lors d’une table ronde dans le cadre de la 26e Conférence annuelle du Réseau international de recherche sur les aspects économiques de la production laitière (IFCN) qui s’est tenue au Dairy Campus de Leeuwarden, aux Pays-Bas. L’IFCN est un réseau diversifié regroupant des universitaires, des organisations de producteurs et des partenaires gouvernementaux du monde entier qui partagent des informations afin d’améliorer la prise de décision.

L’équipe a profité de l’occasion pour expliquer la gestion de l’offre à un auditoire international, en précisant comment ce système contribuait à minimiser les perturbations du marché causées par les droits de douane tout en aidant les Canadiens à choisir des produits locaux. Une équipe des PLC a également participé à la deuxième Conférence mondiale sur la transformation de l’élevage dans une optique de durabilité, organisée par l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO) du 29 septembre au 1er octobre 2025. Les PLC a également discuté du leadership continu du secteur laitier canadien en matière de pratiques d’élevage durables avec le directeur général adjoint, le directeur de la Division de la production et de la santé animales et le vétérinaire en chef de la FAO.

Prinzhaven Farms was established by Philip and Selena Prinzen in 1999. Their journey began in a rented barn with just 12 cows and over the years, the Prinzens steadily expanded their operation, purchasing quota when possible and adapting through industry changes. After four years in their first barn, they moved to another rented facility in 2003, continuing to grow until 2010 when they purchased their current farm from a retiring couple. Since then, Prinzhaven Farms has evolved through strategic improvements to infrastructure and a commitment to efficiency, leading to their latest milestone: converting their tie-stall barn into a robotic milking system earlier this year.

FARM & FAMILY

Farming at Prinzhaven is truly a family affair. Phil and Selena run the day-to-day operations alongside their two daughters, Maria (19) and Paige (15), who are actively involved in chores, breeding decisions, and showing calves in 4-H. Maria is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at the University of Guelph, while Paige, in Grade 10, shares a special passion for Jerseys.

The family also farms approximately 600 acres, 300 of which they own, growing hay, wheat, soybeans, and grain corn. Their early years required both Phil and

Selena to work off farm, but since 2013, they’ve been fully dedicated to dairy. They also have one full-time employee who has been with them for over a decade.

WHY ADD JERSEYS

The small stalls in their first barn were ideal for Jerseys, and with encouragement from friends, the breed quickly became part of their identity. Today, Jerseys make up about 30% of their mixed herd of Holsteins and Jerseys, all registered and classified.

The Jerseys have also brought undeniable advantages: higher milk components, calving ease, and striking beauty. Paige’s enthusiasm for the breed, often using a Jersey as her 4-H project, has further cemented their place in the herd. Selena mentions, “A wise friend once said, you have to keep everyone interested,” and Jerseys have done just that for their family.

BARN RENOVATIONS

Prinzhaven Farms has always embraced change, but their most recent renovation was truly transformative. For years, the farm operated with a tie-stall barn. In fall 2024, they began a major retrofit, converting the tie-stall into a free-stall barn equipped with two Lely A5 robotic milkers. On September 16, 2024, they milked their last cows in the tie-stall and sent the herd to two host farms while construction began.

The renovation was extensive: 54 dump truck loads of concrete were removed, the interior was rebuilt with new stalls, wall and ceiling coverings, and lighting. They pushed out an exterior wall by eight feet to create a new feed alley and added a 44' x 52' extension to house the robots. On January 22, 2025, the cows returned to a completely modernized barn, marking a new chapter for the farm.

The transition has been remarkable. The cows thrive in the new environment, and the robots have brought flexibility and reduced physical strain for the family. “The Jerseys love the robot;

you won’t find a Jersey on the fetch list!” Selena laughs, highlighting how well the mixed herd adapted.

THE FUTURE

Looking ahead, the Prinzens are focused on maintaining a healthy, productive herd and continuing to innovate. Their calf management program emphasizes health from day one, with practices like colostrum feeding, vitamin supplementation, and gradual socialization in group hutches. They grow most of their own feed and prioritize balanced nutrition through a daily TMR of hay, corn, minerals, and palm fat. They classify their herd and recently began genomic testing to guide breeding decisions. Both daughters show animals in 4-H and occasionally at local fairs, keeping the family’s passion for genetics and quality alive.

Succession planning is already in motion. Maria and Paige both aspire to farm, and the new robotic barn has created flexibility for the next generation. “It bought us time,” says the couple. “No one is forced to rush home, and when they are ready, the setup is ideal.” While there’s no formal plan yet, discussions with the girls, accountants, and bankers ensure the ball is rolling.

POURQUOI AJOUTER DES JERSEYS

Les petites logettes dans leur première étable étaient idéales pour des Jerseys et, avec l’encouragement d’amis, la race est rapidement devenue partie intégrante de leur identité. Aujourd’hui, les Jerseys composent environ 30 % de leur troupeau mixte Holstein et Jersey, toutes enregistrées et classifiées.

Les Jerseys amène aussi leurs avantages indéniables : de plus hautes composantes laitières, une facilité au vêlage et leur immense beauté. L’enthousiasme de Paige pour la race, utilisant souvent une Jersey comme projet 4-H, a solidifié leur place dans le troupeau. Selena mentionne « Un sage ami a dit un jour que vous devez nourrir l’intérêt de chacun » et c’est ce que les Jerseys ont fait pour cette famille.

RÉNOVATIONS D’ÉTABLE

Prinzhaven Farms a toujours accueilli le changement mais leur plus récente rénovation a eu un effet transformateur. Pendant des années, la ferme opérait avec une étable entravée. À l'automne 2024, ils ont commencé une rénovation majeure, convertissant les logettes en une étable libre équipée de deux robots de traite Lely A5. Le 16 septembre 2024, ils ont trait leurs dernières vaches dans l’étable entravée et envoyé le troupeau dans deux fermes temporaires pour commencer la construction.

L’AVENIR

En regardant vers l’avenir les Pinzen se concentrent à maintenir un troupeau en santé et productif tout en continuant d’innover. Leur programme de gestion des veaux mise sur la santé dès la naissance avec des pratiques comme les repas de colostrum, la supplémentation de vitamines et la socialisation graduelle en huttes de groupes. Ils cultivent la plupart de leurs propres aliments et priorisent une alimentation équilibrée par une RTM quotidienne de foin, maïs, minéraux et graisse de palmiste.

20 Years of Jersey Classification

Where does the time go? It has been over twenty years since talks began between Holstein Canada and Jersey Canada about the possibility of Holstein Canada running the All-Breed Classification system. After several discussions and presentations, both on-farm and in the boardrooms, about what a great fit this would be for all dairy breeds in Canada, an amalgamation of classification services was established.

This new amalgamation would ensure that all dairy herds would be on a regular schedule for classification visits. This means that when classifiers are scheduled to an area, all breeds, at all farms, are evaluated. Additionally, those herds that house more than one breed would now have all their animals classified at the same visit. This was a huge improvement in efficiency and a benefit for all classifying dairy producers.

One thing that remains unique about the All-Breed Classification program is that each of the seven dairy breed associations still has full control over the parameters of their scorecard. From the Jersey end, we commend

the past and present Jersey Canada Genetic Improvement Committees on sticking true to the breed. They have made huge accomplishments from where the Canadian Jersey started to where it is now and the strong focus on the breed for the future. It is also worth mentioning the past classifiers of the Joint Classification Program, as they were the pioneers who traveled the country for the Jersey cow. This included individuals like Tom Barnes, Jean Marc Pellerin, and Merv Scott, to name just a few.

Over the last 20 years, the Jersey breed has continued to develop strongly. In 2005, the Genetic Committee came to the realization that improvements in the mammary system were required to continue genetic progress in this area. For this, the Committee decided to put a 48% weighting on that section of the scorecard, which was a bold move but a needed one. This has resulted in the mammary system for all Jerseys classified going from 81 points in 2006 to 83.5 points in 2024.

Along with the significant improvement in the mammary system over the last 20 years, the number of Jerseys classified across the country has increased by 45%. This, itself, is an amazing achievement. Increasing the amount of data that is collected for Jerseys increases the reliability of genetic evaluations for the breed and the program. Along with this, milk production for the breed has also increased from 6,331 kg of milk at 4.8% fat based on 8,927 records in 2006 to 7,450 kg milk at 5.2% fat based on 12,596 records in 2024. This highlights the breed’s claim to fame for having great mammary systems and dairy strength.

Over the last 20 years of working with this breed, I have seen firsthand

how adaptable the Jersey breed is. Jerseys have the temperament to adjust to all environments. It is well known that Jerseys love robots—or maybe it’s the feed that they get from the robots. The characteristics of the breed, like their solid mammary systems, dairy strength, and their ease of mobility, make it easy for them to adjust to all barn setups. This is a function of the work that has been done over the years in the classification system and the genetic progress that has been made because of it.

As All-Breed classifiers in Canada, we are unique on the global level, as not many countries have the same classifiers classifying all dairy breeds. This gives Canada an advantage to promote all dairy breed classification on an international scale. Classifiers have promoted the Canadian Jersey breed in several countries, giving presentations on Jersey classification and judging as well as training classifiers from other countries when they visit Canada. Some examples of these countries include Brazil, Italy, and South Korea. This international collaboration showcases the strength of our Canadian classification system but also helps enhance the global reputation and influence of the Canadian Jersey breed.

As we look back on more than two decades of progress, it’s clear that the All-Breed Classification program has played a pivotal role in advancing the quality, consistency, and global reputation of the Canadian classification system and the Jersey breed. The collaboration between industry partners, the dedication of classifiers, and the forward-thinking decisions of genetic committees have all contributed to measurable genetic improvement and increased international recognition. With continued commitment to excellence and innovation, the future remains bright for the Canadian Jersey breed and the All-Breed Classification program.

Mais où va le temps? Il y a déjà plus de vingt temps, on commençait les discussions entre Holstein Canada et Jersey Canada au sujet de la possibilité qu’Holstein Canada gère un système de classification multi-races. Après plusieurs discussions et présentations, tant à la ferme que dans les salles de conférences, sur les avantages pour toutes les races laitières au Canada, une amalgamation des services de classification fut établie.

Cette nouvelle amalgamation s’assurerait que toutes les races laitières auraient un horaire régulier pour les visites de classification. Ceci signifie que lorsque les classificateurs prévoient visiter votre région, toutes les races dans toutes les fermes sont évaluées. En plus, les troupeaux contenant plus d’une race pourraient faire classifier tous leurs animaux en une seule visite. Ceci est une grande amélioration pour l’efficacité et un bénéfice pour tous les producteurs laitiers utilisant la classification.

Un critère unique au sujet du programme de classification multi-races est que chacune des sept associations de races laitières garde plein contrôle des paramètres de sa fiche de contrôle. Pour ce qui est des Jerseys, nous remercions les comités d’amélioration génétique de Jersey Canada, passés et actuels, d’être restés fidèles à la race. Ils ont fait de grandes avancées à partir du début des Jerseys canadiennes jusqu’où est la race maintenant et ont établi un objectif solide pour l’avenir. Grant’s Breeder Farm Ltd. is a family-run operation in Hatfield Point, New Brunswick, where Jersey cows and poultry coexist across multiple properties. The farm is owned by Gilbert and Stacy Matheson, and they operate it with their seven children and a team of valued employees.

The Mathesons began their journey in poultry, taking over Gilbert’s grandparents’ farm in 2004. The property had been home to beef and poultry operations since the 1950s, and while poultry was the initial focus, dairy was never far from their minds. Gilbert had always kept a milking cow, and both he and Stacy share a passion for the industry.

In 2008, the family transitioned into dairy farming, becoming new entrants and selling their beef herd to make room for a dairy herd. Beginning with a 50/50 Holstein/Jersey herd, they slowly transitioned to 100% Jersey over the next five years. Jerseys were a natural choice for the Mathesons, not only for their manageable size but also for their lively personalities, which provide entertainment and a mood boost during daily chores.

Approximately three years ago, the Mathesons purchased a second farm (Vail Creek) that houses a mixed herd of Holsteins, Jerseys, with a handful of Ayrshires and a Brown Swiss. Today, the combined farms are home to around 280 dairy cattle with 60 Jerseys currently milking on a VMS 300 DeLaval robotic system at the home farm and 65 from the mixed herd milking in a tie-stall on the Vail Creek property. The space from the second property has allowed the family to increase their herd numbers by balancing the Jersey heifers between the two farms.

The poultry side of the business has grown significantly over the years. Initially, the Mathesons graded and marketed their own eggs directly to customers. In 2012, they transitioned to working with Maritime Eggs, which now handles their egg marketing. They began with layer breeders and eventually became new entrants for egg layers, acquiring additional quota over time. Today, they also sell ready-to-lay pullets throughout the Maritimes. After suffering a barn fire earlier this year, the family is already starting to rebuild and continue growing this side of the farm,

with a new barn slated for completion by mid-2026.

Supporting both the dairy and poultry operations is a feed mill, which allows the Mathesons to produce custom feed for their animals and a few neighbouring farms. This addition has helped reduce costs and improve feed quality, and a nutritionist on staff monitors and adjusts dairy rations as needed. The farm employs 24 people, including family members and local students, many of whom are crosstrained to work across both businesses.

Each member of the Matheson family plays a role. Their eldest daughter, who works full-time off-farm, helps when needed, while their son Bradford works full-time on the farm, focusing on equipment and fieldwork. 15-year-old Cecily is especially passionate about Jerseys and has started her own prefix, Belleisle. She handles dairy chores every other weekend and prefers spending time with her cows over socializing. Silas mixes the TMR each morning, and the younger children contribute according to their abilities, including gathering eggs. Support comes in many forms from outside family members as well, whether that is babysitting, help-

ing with the animals or fixing machinery, they are always willing to lend a hand.

Daily life on the farm is anything but routine. Stacy’s mornings begin with animal checks and dairy barn chores, followed by homeschooling the children and managing whatever tasks arise, whether it is moving cows, handling phone calls, or troubleshooting equipment. Gilbert’s role involves overseeing operations across multiple properties, ensuring everything runs smoothly and attending industry meetings as a director of both the provincial and national milk boards.

Managing two distinct agricultural businesses comes with its challenges. Time management is crucial, as there is always something demanding attention. However, the overlap between dairy and poultry often works to their advantage. Shared equipment and cross-trained staff make transitions smoother, and poultry manure is used to fertilize fields for crop production. The feed mill also ties the two operations together, using locally sourced grains to supplement their own grown crops and produce feed for both cows and chickens.

Outside of farming, the couple finds time, though limited, for hobbies and personal interests. Stacy enjoys photography and often captures candid moments around the farm, sharing them through lighthearted TikToks that showcase the humor and unpredictability of farm life. She is also a 4-H leader, leader of the local Homeschool Group and a member of the Jersey Canada Youth Committee. . Gilbert, meanwhile, enjoys spending time at his “camp”, a winterized small house on one of the properties, and working with his sawmill. The family can also be found showing their Jerseys at local shows, something the children enjoy taking part in. They won the Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners as well as Breeder’s Herd at the Atlantic Dairy Championship Colour Breeds show in Fredericton, NB, this past October.

The Mathesons believe that successful farming requires passion, adaptability, and a willingness to think outside the

box. For those considering expanding into a new market, they recommend thorough research and an open mind. Diversification has not only provided financial stability but also created opportunities for year-round employment and stronger community ties.

Looking ahead, the family is focused on rebuilding and maintaining what they have built. While expansion is always a possibility, they’re currently content with refining their operations and continuing to grow in knowledge and experience.

Aujourd’hui, ils vendent également des poulettes prêtes à pondre partout dans les Maritimes. Malgré un feu d’étable plus tôt cette année, la famille planifie déjà rebâtir et continuer à faire grandir cette facette de la ferme avec une nouvelle ferme qui devrait être complétée vers le milieu de l’an prochain.

Une meunerie appuie leurs entreprises laitières et avicoles ce qui permet aux Matheson de produire une moulée sur mesure pour leurs animaux et quelques fermes environnantes. Cet ajout a aidé à réduire les coûts et à améliorer la qualité des aliments. Un nutritionniste à leur emploi surveille et ajuste les rations laitières au besoin. La ferme emploie 24 personnes dont des membres de la famille et des étudiants locaux, plusieurs de ceux-ci étant formés pour travailler dans les deux entreprises.

Chaque membre de la famille Matheson joue un rôle. Leur fille aînée, qui travaille à temps plein à l’extérieur de la ferme, aide au besoin, tandis que leur fils Bradford travaille à temps plein sur la ferme, se concentrant sur l’équipement et les travaux des champs. Cecily, 15 ans, est passionnée de Jerseys et a débuté son propre préfixe, Belleisle. Elle

s’occupe des tâches laitières une fin de semaine sur deux et préfère passer du temps avec les vaches plutôt que de socialiser. Silas prépare la RTM chaque matin et les enfants plus jeunes contribuent selon leurs capacités, incluant le ramassage des œufs. De l’aide supplémentaire est fourni de plusieurs façons par d’autres membres de la famille, que ce soit pour s’occuper des enfants, aider avec les animaux et réparer de la machinerie – ils sont toujours prêts à aider.

La vie quotidienne sur la ferme n’est jamais routinière. Le matin, Stacy commence par vérifier les animaux et par faire les tâches à l’étable laitière, puis fais l’école à la maison pour les enfants et gère toute tâche qui peut survenir que ce soit déplacer des vaches, prendre des appels ou vérifier de l’équipement. Le rôle de Gilbert est de gérer les opérations pour les multiples propriétés, s’assurer que tout marche rondement et d’assister aux réunions de l’industrie come administrateur des comités laitiers provincial et national.

Gérer deux entreprises agricoles distinctes vient avec son lot de défis. La gestion du temps est cruciale car il y a toujours quelque chose qui demande de l’attention. Cependant, le chevauchement entre le laitier et l’avicole est souvent à leur avantage. De l’équipement partagé et du personnel formé pour les deux entreprises aident aux transitions et le fumier des poules est utilisé pour fertiliser les champs pour les grandes cultures. La meunerie lie les deux entreprises, utilisant des grains trouvés localement pour supplémenter leur propres récoltes et produit de la moulée pour les vaches et les poulets.

À part la ferme, le couple trouve un peu de temps pour des loisirs et des intérêts personnels. Stacy s’adonne à la photographie et capture souvent des moments candides à la ferme, partageant ces moments humoristiques et imprévisibles de la vie à la ferme sur TikTok. Elle est aussi leader 4-H et leader du groupe local d’École à la maison. Gilbert quant à lui aime passer du temps à son ‘camp’, une petite maison hivernisée sur une de leur propriétés et travailler avec son moulin à scie. On retrouve aussi la famille présentant leurs Jerseys aux expositions locales, activité appréciée des enfants. Ils ont remporté les titres de Premier Éleveur et Exposant ainsi que Troupeau de l’Éleveur à l’exposition Atlantic Dairy Championship Colour Breeds à Frédéricton en octobre dernier.

Les Matheson croient que pour réussir en agriculture vous devez avoir la passion, la capacité à vous adapter et la volonté de penser autrement. Pour ceux qui veulent élargir leurs opérations dans un nouveau marché, ils recommandent de faire une recherche approfondie avec un esprit ouvert. La diversification leur a non seulement offert la stabilité financière mais leur permet de créer des opportunités d’emploi toute l’année et des liens communautaires solides. Pour l’avenir, la famille se concentre sur la reconstruction et le maintien de ce qu’ils ont construit. Même si l’expansion est toujours une possibilité, ils sont présentement satisfaits d’améliorer leur entreprise et de continuer à grandir en connaissances et en expérience.

Remembering Bruce Jobson En souvenir de Bruce Jobson

Bruce Jobson, a fourth-generation dairy farmer and award-winning journalist from the UK, passed away on November 20th, 2025, after visiting Canada for the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. His company, Bernicia Media, proudly sponsored two classes at the National Jersey Show. His passing was announced by his family through the Bernicia Media Facebook page with the following message:

“It is with great sadness that the Jobson family of Helen, Ryan and Shaun share the news that our beloved husband, father and grandfather Bruce Jobson, has passed away.

Bruce passed away in Sherbrooke Hospital, Quebec, Canada at 10:20pm, November 20th, 2025. He was surrounded with love.

Family friend Marie-Claire Girod provided the opportunity for Helen, Ryan, Shaun and Bella to say to Bruce how much they loved him Bruce was given a Christian service in his room which was beautifully conducted by Marie-Noel.

Family friend Rémi Guay provided Bruce with great care and comfort during his time in Canada.

Bruce passed away on the same day as his beloved father Will Jobson’s birthday –something that gives us all some comfort.

The entire Jobson family wish to thank all those who have provided support and have shown their love and appreciation for Bruce.

Bruce was “formidable” – someone of many talents, to describe him would require an article only he could write. He was a “man of many seasons” who gave his time to anyone.

Bruce was very well known throughout the world for his contributions to agriculture - journalism, political commentary and to sport – especially football, with Trident Soccer.

His contributions to the dairy cattle breeding industry as he formed a “dynamic duo” with Drew Sloan MBE to become leading figures in dairy breeding.

Bruce enjoyed appearing on GB News to discuss and debate the events of the day and did so with confidence and professionalism. His friendship with GB News broadcaster Dougie Beattie meant a lot to him.

Above all, Bruce was a loving and caring husband to his beloved wife Helen, a

True Jersey Showmanship: A Community Effort at the Royal

The 2025 National Jersey Show at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair took place in Toronto, Ontario, on Saturday, November 15. Among the many highlights, one story stood out, a testament to friendship, teamwork, and the spirit of the Jersey community.

This year’s Breeder’s Herd title went to Lone Pine Jerseys (the Haeni family) of Didsbury, Alberta , an achievement that was anything but ordinary. For those unfamiliar, the Breeder’s Herd class requires three animals with the same prefix, and at least part of one animal must still be owned by the original breeders. With nearly 3,500 km separating Lone Pine Jerseys from Toronto, pulling this off seemed next to impossible, but in the Jersey community, the sky is the limit.

The effort began with Lee Morey of Unique Stock Farms (Rochester, AB), who was at the Royal earlier in the week

animals. After connecting with George Mason of Morningmist Jerseys, Lee paid the transfer fee as a gift, allowing a portion of Lone Pine Video Blasted to return to Lone Pine Jerseys.

Joining Blasted were Lone Pine Matt Boujee, owned by Bridon Farms (Paris, ON), and Lone Pine Jordan Booster,

owned by Pierre Boulet and Mike Berry (Montmagny, QC). With teamwork and generosity, the herd was complete.

Meanwhile, back in Alberta, the Haeni family tuned into the National Jersey Show livestream, unaware of what was about to unfold. To their astonishment, not only did Lone Pine have a Breeder’s Herd entered, but it was also named 1st in the class.

Reflecting on the moment, the Haeni family shared:

“We are speechless! This is proof that friendships and people in this industry can be just as special as the cows we all admire.”

This story is a reminder that true showmanship is rooted in initiative, teamwork, and a shared passion, not only for the Jersey breed, but for the people who make this incredible community what it is.
