For many years as cow/calf outfits continued to operate, next year was always going to be better. Unprecedented prices in the cattle business starting in the spring of 2014 right through to the fall run in all classes of livestock has been a very rewarding turn around. The excitement throughout the business from cow/calf to backgrounder to finisher is certainly very gratifying to see and be part of. The continued development of every cow herd as we move forward has many exciting selection and decisions to be made. Our main focus of selection still has to remain with the cowherd to raise a top end product with the basics of fertility, maternal traits and structural soundness. Not every ranch uses the same selection criteria when selecting their next herd bulls but raising the best possible end product under their ranch conditions certainly is. As you look through the bulls on offer, there are certainly identifiable traits similar among the bulls. Eye appeal, length of body, ability to move out and travel well, good hair coats and having a strong maternal base are what we strive for in this offering. We invite you to come view the bulls here at the ranch prior, or they will be in the yards in Fort Macleod on Wednesday, February 11th, prior to the Sale. Selected for use as a herd bull as a young calf along side his 3 year old dam. His stamp, directly influenced by his mother, 34N, is obvious in his females. His bulls have lots of performance and travel well in the breeding fields. Last year of his offering.
In our program, we feel it to be very important to run our herd bulls with a large group of cows. We do no E.T. work and have done very limited A.I. work.

This Waterton son was a real powerhouse of a sire breeding very well and leaving a tremendous set of females. We had limited use of 14U as he also bred at JPM Farms in Saskatchewan. His offering is very powerful this year and will be his last.

For a number of years we have included a “Did you Know...?” page in our Bull Sale Catalogue. the idea was to help spread the word that our beef industry is a vital part of the economy. It is also environmentally friendly and sustainable. It seems the entire ag community is under fire more and more from special interest groups that like to spread false info and propaganda. the following ten “Fast Facts” are both interesting and educational. www.beefadvocacy.ca is a website developed by Canada Beef to help proponents of our industry deal with questions or situations that may arise both friendly and not so friendly. We think it is worth checking out.

Canada is the third largest exporter of grain fed beef, behind the USa and australia.
2.
1950’s feed efficiency was 10:1; today it’s 6:1.
3.
In 2015 international demand for Canadian beef is projected to be above 2003 levels for the first time.
4.
the beef industry contributes almost $25 billion to the Canadian economy annually as the 3rd highest gDP industry behind first place petroleum and second place automotive.
5.
Scientifically, grass fed beef appears to be leaner than grain finished beef by 2 - 4 grams per 100g of trimmed meat. this difference is quite small in the context of total fat consumption for a day of approximately 60g.
6.
Feedlot production costs would be 8% higher if producers chose not to (or were unable to) use implants, ionophores or beta-agonists. to produce the same amount of Canadian beef without the use of growth promotants would require 12% more cattle, 10% more land, 15% more feed and 4% more water. It would also require 7% more fuel and fertilizer.
7.
Every Canadian consumed an average of 44 pounds of beef last year.
8.
annual Canadian steer carcass weight has increased an average of 7 pounds per year since 1975 to an average of 860 pounds for 2014.
9.
45% of Canada’s cattle producers are over 55 years old.
10. a 550 pound steer in alberta averaged $275/cwt in November 2014, up $670 per head from the year before.

Since 1998 rural children in Alberta have had the opportunity for face to face farm safety discussions in their school classrooms during “Safety Smarts” presentations. Each grade has their own safety presentation based upon rural risks most often impacting that particular age. The Grade 2 Safety Smarts presentation deals with rural drowning hazards. Children receiving this presentation have shared very personal and powerful experiences in the hopes of saving their classmates from grief and heartache. Classroom teachers who sit in on this presentation comment on how attentive and interested their students were during the presentation and how much they discuss it afterwards.
