Congratulations to Carson Baker
ond year at Lakeland College taking a Diploma in Agribusiness. Carson has attended and participated at Round Up for 11 years. Carson is active in his community but something he is very proud of is, the high school hockey team held Cancer Care fundraising games that raised over $ 5,000.00 in 2 seasons, which he was on the hockey team at that time. The money raised was donated to various units around Manitoba, with the majority staying in Neepawa. After college Carson plans to be involved in the Agriculture industry while continuing to have his own herd of cattle. Congratulations Carson!

MB ANGUS PRESIDENT’S REPORT SPRING 2026
Manitoba Angus President- Kerri Hinsburg
Happy New Year!
It is hard to believe that calving season has officially started, and Bull Sale season is rapidly approaching! The fall calf run showed us record breaking calf sales that in turn fueled a fall female sale run that is one for the record books!
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Kerri Hinsburg, myself along with my husband Ken and our 2 daughters Kendra and Kate operate KCH Cattle Co. located just West of Rapid City, MB. I am your newly elected president of the Manitoba Angus Assn. On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Devin Boitson for his years of service to our association and offer my congratulations to both Devin & Sarah on their recent marriage, may they have a lifetime of happiness, filled with green pastures and great cattle.
I am sure many of you are enjoying the above average temperatures we have been experiencing, which has made our Manitoba winter much more enjoyable than usual. With all the weather fluctuations we have been experiencing everyone will all have to keep a sharp eye on both newborn calves & yearling replacement pens for the common respiratory diseases that can come with these changing weather conditions.
The MAA is taking applications for our summer Angus Gold Show, and we are working on a summer herd tour. Be sure to check out our Facebook page for all out Angus events. Ag Days is January 20-22, we will have a booth, so feel free to stop by!
Happy Calving!

Happy New Year to everyone and I hope you all had a great Christmas.
Hope everyone has a great calving season as we all know the challenges of calving in a Manitoba winter.
O n the Canadian Angus front things are progressing with the new office. Renovations are to start shortly with a move in target of mid-May 2026. I think the building is going to meet our needs quite nicely. The Staff are definitely a strength we have at CAA.
We received an update on this year’s AGM June 25-26 in Kamloops BC. It is going to be a great event with some of the activities they have in the planning stages. Keep checking the CAA website for details and updates.
A ngus HOME is near the finish line. This was a huge undertaking and will be a great tool for our members to move forward. Feel free to reach out to Mandy at the CAA office with any questions you may have. Mandy and her team will be of great help if you have any questions or problems.
I am loo king forward to attending this year’s GOAL conference in Winnipeg on Feb 14,15 & 16. It is nice to see we have a number of Junior members from Manitoba attending and that number will continue to increase as the bulk of our Juniors are now getting closer to the age able to attend. Hope everyone has a successful bull sale season, and I look forward to attending some sales.

MANITOBA 2025 PUREBRED ANGUS BREEDER OF THE YEAR
We are excited and humbled to be named the 2025 Purebred Breeder of the Year. We were both surprised and grateful to be nominated for this honor and would like to thank Penny Rooke for nominating us. We started our Angus journey in 2001 with the addition of 30 commercial Angus females. It didn’t take long to be impressed with the maternal & production qualities that Angus females have. We loved that the Angus calves, are born small and grow fast. We maintained our Angus influence commercial herd until 2013. We made the difficult decision to sell our farm and downsize our herd so we could move to Oliver, BC to be closer to Kerri’s parents. In 2016 were able to buy a small farm, and we decided to re-start our herd with a purchase of a nice, bred heifer and some embryos from Brooking Angus Ranch. We were extremely happy with the results. We wanted our 2 daughters Kendra and Kate to be able to grow up as we did, in agriculture with purebred cattle. As we had a small farm it was paramount that we must source high quality females that can not only produce quality show heifers for them to take to junior shows but ultimately turn into high producing brood cows for them to grow their own Angus herds. In 2021the winds of change blew again, and we made the decision to sell the small farm that we had outgrown in BC and move back to Ken’s Manitoba Roots. We purchased Ken’s parents farm, loaded up our herd and have not looked back since. This year we will calve out 25 purebred Angus females along with 30 Purebred Simmental and Charolais. Our daughters Kendra & Kate are both involved in all aspects of our operation from doing chores, to calving out cows. They are both very active in 4-H, as well as in the Junior Angus, Simmental and Charolais Associations. Kendra is in grade 11, she holds a number of Executive positions both in 4-H as well as the Junior Angus & Charolais breed Associations. She is currently serving her second year as the Junior Director in the Manitoba Angus Association. Kendra’s future plans, are studying to become a veterinarian once she graduates high school. Kendra has a small herd of Angus & Charolais females, and she won the Manitoba Junior Angus Show Female of the Year Award in both 2022 & 2023. Kate is in grade 10 and is serving as the Vice President of the Manitoba Junior Angus Association and is on the executive of our local 4-H Club. She is planning on going to Lakeland College after she graduates and getting her diploma

Canadian Angus Association Leads the Way with Research and Development Project:
Using A.I. and Camera Technology to develop phenotyping systems to measure traits for members
There are three main areas of focus in this project with associated outcomes:
•Developing camera and A.I. technology to help measure and record subjective traits
Along with traditional classification by trained Holstein Canada Classifiers, we will develop technology that can help producers collect standardized and accurate information on subjective traits like teat score, udder score, foot angle score, claw set score, body condition score and docility. This technology can be used to collect many more traits and measurements.
Canadian Angus Association ‘Phenomics’ Project Invitation to Participate
•Developing camera and A.I. technology to help measure and record carcass quality traits
Included in the project objectives is collecting both ultrasound scan data and abattoir data on carcass quality traits. Members who do not currently use ultrasound scanning, or receive carcass quality information back from the abattoir can contribute to this project’s objective. Both ultrasound scan and abattoir carcass quality information on Angus and Angus cross animals will contribute significantly to more accurate GEPDs for these traits.
•Developing camera and A.I. technology to help measure and record health traits
Expanding on our previous work to characterize high immune response in Canadian Angus animals, this project will allow us to collect additional phenotypes for traits that impact animal health and welfare.
Acknowledgements
This project has been made possible by major investments from Agriculture and Agrifood Canada (AAFC) through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP).
Canadian Angus Association members wanting to participate
We have an ongoing project to support members collecting information on subject traits, health traits, and carcass quality traits. If you are interested in having a trained classifier measure and record mature cow traits (mature cow weight, height, body condition score, docility, claw set and foot angle) please contact us at klatimer@cdnangus.ca or 403-537-5604. Mature cow traits must be collected within 45 days (+/-) of taking weaning weights on their calves. This service is provided at no cost to you in part by funding from Agriculture and Agrifood Canada and Sustainable CAP.
Canadian Angus members who would like a trained scorer to measure and record subjective traits for mature cows this fall (+/- 45 days of calf weaning weight), or on yearling animals next winter, can contact the office to schedule a classifier or ultrasound scan technician and a High Immune Response Test technician. To participate in the project please contact Dr. Kajal Latimer at klatimer@cdnangus.ca.
2025 MANITOBA JUNIOR SHOW FEMALE OF
THE YEAR AWARD
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Manitoba Junior Angus Association for the for sponsoring the Manitoba Junior Show Female of the Year Award. It is a great program, and it is wonderful to see recognition go to beautiful Angus females.
My name is Kate Hinsburg, I am 15 years old and am currently the Vice President of the Manitoba Junior Angus Association. I was very surprised and excited to be informed that my heifer KCH ANNIE K 412 was selected as the recipient of the 2025 Manitoba Junior Angus Show Female of the Year. When I picked her as a calf, I knew she was special, so I named her “Pickles” not because she looks like a pickle, or that I even like pickles (which I don’t) it just seemed to fit her personality. Pickles is an embryo out of SOO Line Annie K 9165, her dam was a past Agribition Supreme winner when she was a first calf heifer with her heifer calf at side. With this in mind, I decided she would be my 4-H heifer. I started her show season off with the first of the Show Female of the Year qualifying shows, RMWF, she won her class, but was edged out of the Champion positions by Joran Frey and my sister Kendra with her heifer. Next came 4-H, where she won Champion heifer at our 4H Achievement and went on to be the Reserve Champion Yearling female at our Inter-Club Achievement. I showed her at a number of summer shows including 3 more award qualifying shows, the Manitoba Angus Junior Gold Show at Carberry, Mb and Angus Showdown in Stettler, Alberta where she placed in the middle of the pack, and at the Manitoba Youth Beef Round-Up she did very well with her being slapped Reserve Champion Angus Female. We then rounded out the show season with the final qualifying show, Manitoba Ag Ex, in Brandon where she won her split and was then selected as Reserve Grand Champion Female. I am very thankful for the show season I had with “Pickles” and can’t wait to see what she has in the spring. Fingers crossed she has a heifer calf so we can do it all over again.
Thank you again to the Junior Angus Association, I would also like to thank all of the judges, & fellow competitors for making this possible. I would like to encourage all of our Manitoba Juniors to show an Angus female in 4-H and at qualifying shows, so you too can experience the excitement of winning the title and beautiful belt buckle for “Show Female

Canadian Angus Green Tags The Tag with Benefits
Angus-branded beef programs across Canada need and want to verify that what they are selling as Angus beef is indeed Angus. One way to prove that is by procuring cattle that are tagged with Canadian Angus Tags.
Tagging your animals with Canadian Angus tags has its benefits:
• Sell direct or through Canadian Angus Feeder Sales across Canada.
• Canadian Angus green RFID tags visually and electronically identify Angus and Angus cross cattle. It’s our guarantee that the animal bearing the tag has a minimum of 50% Angus genetics.
• CCIA compliant tag—no other RFID tag is required for national identification.
• Automatic enrollment in Verified Angus and access to genetics-based branded Angus beef programs and marketing opportunities for Canadian Angus genetics.
Ordering your Canadian Angus Tags (RFID) has never been so easy: Please order directly from CCIA online at www.canadaid.ca or call 1-877-909-2333
CCIA carries both the Datamars brand Temple Tag ComfortEar Canadian Angus RFID indicator as well as the Allflex brand Canadian Angus RFID indicator.
Did you know that you also can order matching TSU/RFID tag sets through CCIA?
Matching TSU and RFID tag sets can simplify data collection and improve accuracy.
Weren’t able to tag your calves green?
The Canadian Angus Asssociation can verify calves for you through the Angus Verified program. Contact CAA for more details.
Order your Canadian Angus management tags directly through the Canadian Angus Association. Order online www.cdnangus.ca/adding-value/ordering-caa-management-tags or call 1-888-571-3580.

Maria has been a great asset to and sponsor of the Fall Gold Show at Ag-Ex in the past and the board is looking forward to her sharing her ideas and knowledge.

Manitoba Angus Association Highlights & AGM Summary 2025
This year the Annual General Meeting was held at Section Six Brewery, Brandon, MB in the evening of November 21st, 202.
The meeting saw a good turnout of membership with lots of great and positive discussion.
LOOKING BACK SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR
INCLUDED:
-Hosted a very successful Gold Show at Ag Ex.
-Booth at Ag Days 2025 in January.
-over 160 Angus tokens handed out to 4-H kids across the province. The tokens were hats and can be seen worn by many people across the province which is great advertising for the association.
- Hosted the Summer Gold show at Carberry, MB, which for the first time in a long time it had moved from Harding. Cattle numbers remained up with the move and the show was very successful.
-Hosted CAA Convention June 11th-13th in Winnipeg, MB. The board and the CAA did a great job of this event with a lot of positive feedback.
-Published the new 2025 MAA Herd Directory.
A few reports were given by directors.
For the Membership report, everything has stayed quite the same as in previous years (except 2025). Tag sales have seen an increase for 2025 since CCIA started taking over the selling of them.
For the Outlook report, with the increase in advertising costs and a bit of a decrease in the revenue generated on the cover pages the Outlook saw a loss again for the year. Ella Wright has come one as the new Outlook editor and her first issue will be Fall 2025.
There was a suggestion to maybe follow the SK Angus Assoc. and do a couple of draws to win cash for anyone who purchases a bull in Manitoba (private or at a sale) and has them transferred into their name. The CAA office keeps track and could let us know. The draw could be made at Ag Ex. Something the board will take back with them and discuss potentially implementing for the year.
For the Gold show report, heard lots of good things about the show at Ag Ex. Carberry was also deemed a great success. Entries were just as high as Harding and there was a lot of good feedback regarding the move. Starting in 2026 banners and sponsors will have the opportunity to hold a contract. More details to be discussed at board level and to be rolled out.
For the 4-H report, the hats for tokens were well received and are actually fantastic as they show up everywhere. There were a few last-minute clubs that were a bit of a struggle but Laura Horner was great to work with. Only had to mail out a few hats to a few clubs as Total Farm Supply was also great to work with in the distribution of the hats.
For the Canadian Director report, the new building has been a huge savings piece and the staff are hoping to be in by March and are excited to get in there. Upkeep is about ½ per month as what was being paid at the old building. One downside to the new location is that there won’t be room for truck and trailer parking but overall that doesn’t happen very often. A new regional ambassador position is available for Manitoba. The position is more of a focus on the commercial side of things and is run through the MAA but they are contracted by the CAA to represent MAA however they see fit. Alberta, BC and Saskatchewan
all have the program and it seems to be going really well for them. The board will discuss this position going forward in terms of advertising it ect. Kim Jee (owner of 750,000 feeder cattle) came to talk about the new registry program. He did say that the Angus breed needs to be conscious of the breeds lean meat yield. A few people have tried the registry system and are really liking the program but the Association wants to make sure all the bugs are out of it before it’s released fully. Myles watched the MAA Ag Ex show from Guadalajara as his travel schedule has been very busy as of late.
For the junior report, Carson has done an awesome job this year being President. There will be a new representative coming in for MB on the CJA board. Any juniors interested are encouraged to apply. Canadian Angus has bursaries for travel to Showdown for juniors to apply for. MAA does have the opportunity to pay for a junior’s registration for Goal. Juniors need to submit their registration receipt and a write up about their experience at GOAL following their return home from GOAL. GOAL’s minimum age is 14. The junior director term position in Manitoba will increase to a 2 year term starting in 2026 to be able to allow the junior more time to get comfortable on the board.
There was also discussion regarding moving the date and location of the AGM. This will be discussed on the board level.
A final discussion was regarding a black Angus sale in Manitoba. The board has done all that it can to support a black angus sale in Manitoba, it is now up to the black angus breeders in Manitoba to get together if they want a sale to happen in Manitoba.
Nominations for open board positions took place. We thank Devin Boitson for his service on the board and welcome the new board member listed below: Maria Franken
Nominations for Purebred Breeder of the year took place. KCH Cattle Co. - The Hinsburg family of Rapid City, MB - graciously accepted and become the 2025 Award winners.
Nominations for Honorary President also took place. Allan Nykoliation of Lenore, MB was named the 2025 Honorary President.

2025 CAA PRESIDENT - GREG PUGH & 2025-2025 BOARD OF DIRECTIONS
MESSAGE FROM THE CAA PRESIDENT
On behalf of the Canadian Angus Association board of directors I am sharing this write up on some of our activities. We are pleased to announce the near completion of our new database Angus Home. This has been a project that the staff at CAA has been working diligently on and we are pleased to say that it will be up and running very soon. This new technology has been developed from the requests of our membership and their desire to have a system that is more user friendly and efficient when entering registrations and keeping their herd information on track.
We have completed the sale of our current office and look forward to moving to our new location in 2026. This sale has allowed the CAA membership to be mortgage free. I want to thank the boards of the past for the original build and implementation of the plan to have our own structure. Through that forethought we have been able to purchase a building outright. Ultimately this limits cost of ownership of an office and membership dollars will not need to go towards longterm debt.
We are entering an era of board election turnover in 2026 and I want to welcome all the candidates from across the regions for running in their elections. I personally look forward to working with new faces on the board as well as I want to share my appreciation for the outgoing directors that have come to term completions.
Our Annual AGM and convention will be hosted in June in British Columbia. The event looks to have a very eventful schedule with opportunity to see beautiful country centered in idyllic ranching communities. If you haven’t booked your tickets look into it. This event looks to be one to attend!
As always if you have any questions about board activities or CAA happenings reach out to your regional representatives sitting on the board, myself,

2025 HONORARY PRESIDENT AWARD ALLAN
NYKOLIATION - N7 STOCK FARMS
I am very honored to be the Honorary President for this year. We have been raising cattle since the 70’s on our family farm under the name N7 Stock Farms. The commercial cow was our main base with some purebred cows to raise bulls for sale and our own use. The original cows were Charolais but in 1998 we saw the light and bought 6 registered black angus bred heifers from Black Meadows. Since then, those 6 have grown into 500 black cows.
My brother Cameron and I started showing our blacks in the early 2000’s. Rapid City Fair we showed up with a load of blacks instead of whites and never looked back, many summer fairs and fall shows later.
I was elected to the Manitoba Angus board where I stayed for 8 years, took 2 years off, then went back on for 5 more years. In those years I was President for multiple terms and Vice President for 3 years.
I would like to thank the Manitoba Angus Association for this award. The livestock industry has been my whole life, and I’ve met thousands of great people in my travels. This industry can be trying at times, but the people keep you coming back.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Gary Gainford Green, Age 81, Granville, formerly of Boissevain, Manitoba, Canada, passed away peacefully December 5, 2025,. Gary was the son and only child of William Green and Violet (Hammond) Green. He was born in Boissevain, Manitoba, April 11, 1944, and was raised on small grain and livestock farm, Green's Angus Farm, located near Boissevain. He loved working with Angus cattle from a young age and showed his animals at many 4-H shows and local fairs. He enjoyed getting together with the neighbor boys and creating mischief. Many stories were shared during later reunions about what really happened when they were kids!
He attended school through Grade 11 in Boissevain. He moved to Iowa his senior year to work for an Angus breeder, Bob Carr, and graduated in 1963 from Winfield High School, Winfield, Iowa. He spent 3 years attending Iowa State University, in Ames, Iowa. He left university and had experience fitting and showing purebred Angus cattle for some of the top Angus herds in the US and Canada; including Wallbridge Farms, New York; Haystack Angus, Colorado; and Hawkeye Acres, Iowa. In 1968, Gary was hired as a field man for the Angus Journal, Webster City, Iowa. His territory included the four western Canadian provinces, as well as Montana, Idaho, Washington and Oregon, or as Gary would say, "half the world". He moved to Lethbridge, Alberta and traveled his territory from there. He sold advertising for the Angus Journal and traveled to many sales providing ring service at sales and "entertainment" with his antics and sense of humor. He took his job very seriously, and worked hard to help his Angus breeders market their cattle.
In the fall of 1974, he met a young lady from North Dakota at a Montana Angus Tour. It took him until the following spring to ask her out, by sending a bid with the sale manager to purchase an Angus heifer at the Frey Angus Ranch Sale. It was announced that "Merry" needed to deliver the heifer to his dad's farm in Boissevain. One year later, on July 3, 1976, he married Merry Frey, at the Frey Angus Ranch, near Granville. They moved to a ranch at Elphinstone, Manitoba, close to the Riding Mountain Park. Gary always had "ideas", and Merry was the "detail" person trying to figure out how they could implement them. They started Green's Chianina Enterprises, importing, breeding and showing pure blood Chianina and Chi-Angus cattle. They also operated Gary Green Sales Management, managing Angus and Chianina cattle sales. While ranching there, sons, Justin and Nathan were born in 1978 and 1980, respectively. In 1986, they sold their ranch and moved to Killarney, Manitoba. Here their daughter, Krysten, was born in 1987. Gary then worked for Investor's Group, Brandon, Manitoba, until 1994, when he moved to Granville, ND. He then commuted to Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, where he sold manufactured homes until retiring in 2005. He had the ability to start up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, and his quick wit and joking nature always made people laugh and have a good time. He was also very proud of his Irish heritage. During his "retirement" he took up babysitting duties for his grandchildren, was a "regular" at the Memorial Diner, loved studying the financial markets, and loved watching hockey and football games and following his favorite teams! He was a member of the Hope Congregational Church, in Granville; he helped teach Hunter Safety and he was recognized as a "Top Hand" volunteer for the city, by quietly doing little jobs to keep the community clean and maintained.
Gary is survived by his wife of 49 years, Merry, Granville; sons, Justin (Lorissa), Maddock and Nathan (Carrie), Minot; and daughter, Krysten (Brooks) Magnuson, rural Granville. Thirteen grandchildren including: Colton, Jorja and Naomi Green, Maddock; Emeline, Ephraim, Peter, Esther, Paul and Philip Green, Minot; and Brody, Beckham, Bo and Violet Magnuson, Granville. Brothers-in-law: Edward Frey, Granville; Vern (Corinne) Frey, Towner; Lynn (Shirley) Frey, Granville; Arlen Frey, Granville, and former sister-in-law, Lois Frey, Minot. He is also survived by 5 nephews and 3 nieces and their families; and several cousins, including Vonnie Coates, Brandon; and Lorna (Jim) McLenehan, Boissevain. He was preceded in death by his parents and his in-laws, Allen and Arlyss Frey, Granville.

MANITOBA MAGIC SALE & JR EXTRAVAGANZA
The 2026 Magic Sale proved to be a resounding success. The Sale average was $10,993 on 39 live lots, showcasing high demand and robust bidding activity among breeders and Juniors alike. Red Mar Mac DM Trooper 113M topped the Sale at $30,000, selling to Dry Creek Ranch, North Dakota. Red Mar Mac Meranda 5M was the second-highest selling female, bringing $25,000 from E6 Ag Ltd of Saskatchewan.
The atmosphere at the Magic Sale was lively, with Manitoba and Saskatchewan Red Angus breeders coming together for a memorable event. The Junior Fund Raising Auction, held the evening before the main sale, was well supported by consignors and buyers. Proceeds from this auction went towards sale credits for Junior members, encouraging youth participation in the cattle industry. This year also marked the inaugural Jr Magic Extravaganza, allowing Junior Angus members to purchase the right to show a heifer
and compete for sale credits. The event added excitement for both parents and consignors, and many animals were successfully purchased by Juniors with the support of their sale credits. The 2026 Magic Sale fostered a vibrant and supportive environment for breeders and the next generation of cattle enthusiasts.

Satisfied customers become repeat customers–and repeat customers become the foundation of a successful business. Transfers set the stage for satisfied customers by authenticating pedigree, performance and EPD information through animal registration certificates and performance records. These documents communicate genetic merit of animals and provide essential information for helping new owners maximize profit from their investment in Angus seedstock. Reputation is key to buyers looking to invest in quality seedstock and being dedicated enough to register and transfer your cattle solidifies your reputation as a professional breeder. It pays to wrap up the deal and transfer the papers.
