Three awards totalling $10,000 will be presented to Canadian Junior Angus members recognizing overall academic achievement, leadership, community involvement, and industry knowledge. Awards in the amounts of $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 will be presented.

Dick Turner Memorial Award | Deadline: May 15

The Dick Turner Memorial Award was established after the passing of legendary Angus icon Dick Turner. During his lifetime, Dick committed 55 years of his career to livestock publishing and successfully promoted and advertised the Angus breed specifically through the Canadian Aberdeen Angus News magazine. One $1,000 scholarship is presented annually.

Canadian Junior Angus Scholarships | Deadline: May 15

A total of three scholarships will be awarded in the amounts of $3,500, $2,500, and $1,500.

Brian Good Memorial Scholarship | Deadline: October 15

The Brian Good Memorial Scholarship was established after the passing of Brian Good, “Mr. Angus”. Brian was the commercial connection in the Angus industry for more than 20 years and believed strongly in supporting our youth. Two awards totalling $5,000 ($3,000 for first and $2,000 for second) will be presented to a post-secondary student recognizing overall livestock industry commitment, community involvement and leadership activities.

The Junior Angus Stockman of the Year award recognizes outstanding young cattlemen who are constantly growing their capacity by actively working with their Angus cattle, promoting their operation and cattle to the public, growing their knowledge of nutrition, genetics and breeding, and producing/selling quality Angus cattle. Five finalists will be selected from the nominations and will each receive $250. The winner will receive a $5,000 bursary to be used for genetics, cattle supplies/equipment, and/or training, along with travel assistance to attend Showdown.

GOAL Travel Bursaries | Deadline: January 1

Bursaries of up to $1000 will be awarded to deserving CJA members from anywhere in Canada. Bursaries must be used within the same year awarded to help offset travel and registration costs for attending the GOAL Conference.

U.S. Exchange Program | Deadline: May 10

Canadian Junior Angus members have the opportunity to attend Junior Red Angus and National Junior Angus events each year, and in return members of the JRA and NJAA attend Showdown and/or GOAL.

Canadian Junior Angus Scholarships | Deadline: May 15

The Outstanding Young Angus Breeder award was developed to recognize an Angus breeder between the ages of 22 and 30 who has demonstrated a desire to stay involved in the Angus business based on their involvement within the breed up to this point in his/her career. The winner will receive $5,000.

A total of three scholarships will be awarded in the amounts of $3,500, $2,500, and $1,500.

Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador Applications due April 30

Brian Good Memorial Scholarship | Deadline: October 15

The Junior Ambassador acts as a role model for youth and represents members of the Canadian Angus Association. It is an opportunity to network with leaders in the agriculture industry and learn from them. Five finalists are selected from the applications and they each receive a $1,000 scholarship and a finalist buckle as well as assistance to attend Convention where they will compete for the Ambassador title. Ambassadors have the opportunity to attend at least one international event and various major agricultural events in Canada.

Showdown Travel & Trucking Bursaries

Deadline: May 25 & June 1

Bursaries of up to $750 will be awarded to six deserving CJA members from anywhere in Canada. Bursaries must be used within the same year awarded to help offset travel costs for attending Showdown. Trucking assistance is also available for those who travel over 1,000 km one way.

Self-Directed National or International Travel Bursaries

The Self-Directed National or International Travel Bursaries were developed to assist young Angus breeders with financial travel assistance for conferences or events related to the beef cattle industry. For members aged 18–30.

Memorial Foundation Female Award JackHart A ttention Juniors

The Manitoba Angus Association has established this award to assist young cattle breeders. This award will be in the form of a $2500 voucher presented to the successful Manitoba Junior to purchase a registered Angus female from a Manitoba Angus breeder.

Anyone aged 21 and under as of Jan. 1, 2026 may apply.

Applicants must submit an essay of approximately 500 words covering 4 main points.

1. Why will you select Angus as your preferred breed?

2. What has been your involvement in the cattle industry?

3. What are your future goals?

4. Who has been your main mentor ‘influence’ in the cattle industry and why?

Application/Essays are to be emailed to MAA secretary Mandi Fewings at mandi.mbangus@gmail.com no later than September 1, 2026.

The winner will be notified shortly after interviews. The purchase of an Angus female from a Manitoba Angus breeder needs to be completed by December 31, 2026 for the $2500 incentive to be applied.

Jack Hart was one of the founding members of the Keystone Klassic Sale and was an annual supporter of it, consigning top quality cattle every year. The Manitoba Angus Board of Directors felt that this award should be presented in Jack’s memory.

With spring making a slow appearance I am sure everyone will be excited to see the return of green grass and cows grazing on pasture. The 2026 Bull sale season has been one for the record books, sale averages are at an all-time high, with calving ease bulls topping many sales and bringing sale averages up. Calving season has wrapped up for some and is well under way for others, breeding plans are in the forefront of everyone’s mind as see bull sale reports and watching last year’s matings nursing at their mother’s side. I hope to see many of you at this years Manitoba Angus Field Day & Tour hosted by Mar Mac Farms & Rooke Farms. The summer Gold Show is being held at the Hamiota Fair on July 16th, I am sure we will see an impressive set of cattle at both events and would like to thank everyone in advance for either showcasing their breeding programs or taking time to attend one or both of these exciting events. Angus breeders have a lot to be proud of, we are a leader in the seedstock industry and have a lot to offer the commercial and feedlot sectors. As we head into the busy days of seeding, and working fields please remember to stay safe and I hope you all have a great summer!

With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of Brent Dunn Stewart, on March 3, 2026, at the age of 67.

Brent was born on March 25, 1958, in Russell, Manitoba. He was the third of four children—three sons and one daughter— born to Bob and Bonnie (Dunn) Stewart. Brent was raised on the family farm, Primrose Hereford Farm, alongside his grandparents Watson and Florence Dunn, as well as his Uncle Mervyn and Aunt Shirley Dunn and their five children. From the very beginning, Brent’s life was rooted in cattle, family, and lifelong friendships.

Brent’s father Bob Stewart managed Primrose Hereford Farm, beginning in 1933. Primrose was a leader in the breed and highly competitive in the show ring. The Manitoba Winter Fair and the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto were the program’s premier showcases. While Brandon was a short trip, the Royal was a great ordeal and every young man’s dream. In those days, cattle were transported by train. The trip would usually take five to six days from Brandon to Toronto. The rail car would be decked with feed and tack on top and the cattle were bedded below. The crew slept with the cattle. The wives would bake and cook supplies for the men, but other supplies were purchased at train stops. Dirt and smoke covered near everything… cattle, feed, water and men. Cards were the entertainment of the day, mostly games of chance, it has been rumored that sometimes cattle changed ownership before they returned home.

Brent made his first trip to the Royal at just nine years old. Though he had hoped to travel by train, his mother insisted he fly so he wouldn’t miss too much school. That first trip sparked a lifelong passion—Brent would go on to attend the Royal more than twenty times, exhibiting cattle and later judging. Reflecting on those years, Brent often said, “The carloads were the most work and the most enjoyable to win—we were lucky to win it a few times.”

A defining moment in Brent’s youth was meeting renowned cattleman George Earley—an introduction that grew into a lifelong friendship. The values and mentorship from his father Bob and grandfather Watson Dunn laid the foundation for what would become Stewart Cattle Co.

Brent owned his first breeding stock at just nine years old and developed a deep passion for showing cattle, following closely in his father’s footsteps. In 1979, Stewart Cattle Co. was established. Not long after, Brent met Dale Triggs of Carberry, Manitoba, whose family raised registered Charolais cattle. Dale became both his partner in life and in the cattle operation. They were married in 1983 and, together with their daughter Kelsey, built Stewart Cattle Co. into a respected and successful program. Over the years, the family raised multiple breeds including Hereford, Salers, Charolais, Angus, and Simmental, alongside a strong commercial herd. They calved upwards of 200 cows and annually implanted 30–40 embryos, marketing both bulls and females from the farm. In later years, they proudly hosted an annual spring bull sale.

Brent, Dale, and Kelsey achieved tremendous success in the show ring, including numerous Champion Steer banners at the Calgary Stampede. Kelsey made nineteen trips to Calgary before the age of twenty-one. Brent often reflected on the camaraderie within the industry, saying, “We made and cultivated so many great family friends from the show world. Some of the highlights of the cattle business is the great people in the show cattle world and the strong competitors which we have been fortunate to compete with. Talking with a buddy one night before the show, he said ‘tonight we are friends… and tomorrow we do battle!’”

Stewart Cattle Co. exhibited cattle at every major show across Canada, as well as in Billings, Montana, and the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. Brent began judging at the age of sixteen and went on to judge shows from Vancouver to Prince Edward Island, and even a prospect steer show in Nebraska. With a lifetime in the cattle business, he witnessed the evolution of the industry firsthand—always with appreciation for both its traditions and its people.

In December 2020, Stewart Cattle Co. held its Complete Herd Dispersal in McAuley, Manitoba, marking the end of an era.

Brent held a deep and abiding passion for the cattle industry, finding great joy in the dedication and discipline of raising and showing quality livestock. Countless hours were spent in the barn and on the road, preparing cattle for the show ring, where his commitment, keen eye, and pride in his herd was always evident. He valued not only the pursuit of excellence, but also the friendships and community built through all the years of showing cattle across Canada.

Above all, Brent cherished his family, who were the center of his life and greatest source of pride. What he loved the most in life was being Papa Brent to his two grandchildren, Brance and Blair. He spoke of them with endless pride and affection, often joking that he had one bull and one heifer – a reflection of both his sense of humor and his deep roots in the cattle industry. Brent and Dale travelled numerous miles to Alberta and back visiting them. His love, guidance, and steady presence will be deeply missed and forever carried in the hearts of his family.

Brent is survived by his daughter Kelsey (Tyler) Thompson, and grandchildren Brance and Blair Thompson; his sister Marilyn Stewart-Foster; as well as many brothers- and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Dale Stewart; his parents Robert (Bob) and Bonnie Stewart; his brothers Brad and Bruce Stewart; and his niece Marley Stewart.

Brent’s legacy lives on in the cattle he raised, the people he mentored, and the family he loved so deeply— his mark on the industry and those who knew him will not be forgotten.

JUNIOR ANGUS SUMMER REPORT:

Well, Winter is finally leaving; calving season has wrapped up for some and for others it is well underway! It is now time to dust off your show gear and start thinking about 4H Achievements, If you’re like me then you are already scoping out all the spring junior shows that are happening in and around Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Speaking of junior shows, I saw several of our members at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, which was recently held in Brandon, Mb. It saw incredible growth in numbers this year with the largest number of cattle entries in the show’s history. There were 80 juniors and 115 head entered. The Angus breed division had 19 entries. It was great to see the barn full of great cattle and enthusiastic juniors!

The Manitoba Junior Angus Assn took advantage of the central location and the large number of MB Angus members and we held our annual general meeting and election of officers after the showmanship classes on Friday April 3rd. Carson Baker stepped down from his position president as he is taking on a position on the national board, he was voted in as the Manitoba Director of the CJAA Board of directors. Congratulations Carson, we know that you will do a great job representing us on the national board!

$14,000 in Scholarships & Prizes Awarded at 2026 Canadian Junior Angus GOAL Conference

$14,000 in Scholarships and Prizes Awarded at 2026 Canadian Junior Angus GOAL Conference February 18, 2026: For Immediate Release

The twentieth Canadian Junior Angus Guiding Outstanding Angus Leaders (GOAL) Conference was held over the weekend in Winnipeg, MB. A total of $14,000 in prizes were awarded to five finalists in the Canadian Angus Foundation Legacy Scholarship program who shared $11,000 and a $3,000 heifer voucher prize was awarded to one lucky attendee randomly selected from the 65 youth in attendance, including two guests from the National Junior Angus Association.

Emma Fox placed first and received a $5,000 scholarship. Reese Wildman placed second and received a $3,000 scholarship. Placing third and receiving a $2,000 scholarship is Lucia Johnston. Kolt Brost and Tanner Lowe each received $500 as runners-up in the competition.

The Legacy Scholarship program awards $11,000 in prizes to Canadian Junior Angus members recognizing overall academic achievement, leadership and community involvement, and industry knowledge. The top five applicants attend the GOAL conference for an interview and panel discussion and the scholarships are awarded during the conference.

In addition to the scholarships, Dallis Sailer of Wetaskiwin, Alberta won a $3,000 heifer voucher. All attendees had their names entered into a draw and her name was selected. She will use the funds toward the purchase of an Angus female this year.

Highlights from the 2026 GOAL Conference included a diverse lineup of sessions focused on business management, innovation, and leadership in the cattle industry. Presentations covered accounting fundamentals for emerging entrepreneurs by Jennifer Trotter of MNP; on-farm innovation in virtual fencing and real-time pasture

performance by Mary Jane Orr of Manitoba Beef and Forage Initiatives; and practical business decision-making in Leasing vs. Purchasing and Corporations – The Whole Story by Lance Stockbrugger of LDS Farms. Additional sessions explored integrating cattle into modern special crops operations with Jason Kehler of Kehler Farms, beef reproduction strategies presented by Dr. David Hamilton of Embryo Genetics/Hamco Farms, Working in Harmony with Nature by Clayton Breault of Breault Ranches and the evolving role of genetics, data, and AI in herd selection by Kajal Latimer of the Canadian Angus Association.

Beyond the educational programming, participants engaged in leadership and reflection activities, scholarship discussions, and networking opportunities throughout the weekend. Attendees also enjoyed a tour of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, a formal dinner and reception, a dinner theatre experience, and interactive social events.

About the Scholarship Recipients

Emma Fox is pursuing a dual degree in Animal Science and Physiology at Oklahoma State University, integrating her passion for livestock production with a strong foundation in biological and medical sciences. Through her Animal Science studies, she has developed extensive knowledge in livestock management, genetics, nutrition, and animal health, with particular relevance to the beef industry, while embracing principles of responsible stewardship and science-based decision-making that reflect the mission of the Canadian Angus Foundation. Inspired by a lifelong connection to agriculture and personal experience with the healthcare challenges facing rural families, Emma plans to attend medical school and become a physician serving rural communities. She is committed to improving access to compassionate, accessible healthcare in agricultural regions while remaining actively engaged in the industry and supporting the people and families who work to feed the world.

There are many commercial cattlemen across Manitoba who have used Angus bulls or have had a mainly Angus cow herd for years with great dedication The MB Angus Association would like to recognize more of these cattlemen. 1 Represents and promotes Angus cattle in general, to the best of their ability.

2 Produces quality cattle that meets market demand

3 Contributes to the affairs of the Association & volunteers time towards association events.

These are guidelines and if a member does not meet all of the criteria but you feel they should be considered for this award, please submit your nomination. The Honourary President is elected by the membership during the Annual General Meeting. The title of Honourary President is given or recognition without the usual requirements, duties, and privileges that formally go along with the role of the president. A pin is presented to the recipient at the Canadian Angus Association Annual General Meeting or at a venue of their choice. They are recognized in the The Outlook as well as the CAA Annual Report.

ROGER WILLIAM COCHRANE

February 20, 1966 ~ February 27, 2026 (age 60)

Roger William Cochrane passed away on February 27, 2026, at his apartment, at the age of 60.

Born prematurely in Winnipeg just before the Blizzard of 1966, Roger weighed just under two pounds at birth. After more than two months in hospital, he was able to return home to the family farm, where his lifelong love of agriculture began.

Roger was a farmer at heart. He took great pride in cattle farming, particularly Herefords and later Red Angus, and spent many years showing cattle locally and at the Brandon Winter Fair alongside his father. Though the sale of the family farm was deeply difficult for him, Roger continued to work in agriculture throughout his life, including with Donald and Brenda Dunn, Gary and Dianne Clarke, and Ashley Faul, as well as occasional work with cattle at Glasman’s and Hogberg’s. He was a devoted member and later leader of the Russell–Binscarth 4‑H Beef Club and took great pride in mentoring youth. Roger was also a proud member of the Russell and Area Lions Club for nearly a decade, serving as Club President and remaining deeply committed to community service.

Roger valued friendship and connection. Though school was not his favourite chapter, the friendships he formed there endured, and class reunions were especially meaningful to him.

Roger is lovingly remembered by his sister Susan and her husband Earl; cousins Marcia Weiser; Glenda and Joe Lucyszyn; Barb and Gord Tanner; Keith and Connie Cochrane; and their families, as well as numerous members of the Cochrane, Klimack, Zimmer, and Coulter families, and many dear friends. Also our chosen family, Ronda and Brian Olson, Celeste and Brendan.

Roger is gone way too soon, but he will be remembered for his resilience, his love of farming and cattle, his devotion to community, and the quiet pride he took in a life well lived.

LYALL EDGERTON (BOTANY ANGUS) OF SOURIS, MB

Lyall Edgerton (Botany Angus) of Souris, MB , Lyall passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on March 10, 2026 at the age of 79. Lyall was very proud of his Angus cattle. The herd was started in 1967 with the purchase of 4 females from the Manitoba Angus Assoc. Sale held in Brandon, Mb. The herd grew over the years with purchases of females and bulls from several prominent Manitoba breeders, later introducing A.I. He consigned bulls to the Douglas Bull Test Station for many years and was an active participant on the board of Directors there, for 9 years and President for 2 years. He later sold bulls by private treaty, out of the yard.

Lyall was an active supporter of the Manitoba Angus Association. He served on the Manitoba Angus Board of Directors for many years, filling various positions. When there was a job to do, we could always count on Lyall to get it done! He was also a volunteer on the MAA host committee for several Canadian Angus AGM’s including the Centennial Meeting in 2005 in Brandon, and the 2011 AGM at Clear Lake. Other members of these committees share great memories of the fun & laughter in planning those events.

Lyall was asked to participate in the planning committee for the World Angus Forum held in Calgary in 2009. This was a job he took great pride in, representing Manitoba both on the committee and helping look after the Manitoba Angus booth and cattle display at the event. He dispersed the herd in 2001 but still wanted to be active in the Angus business so he partnered with Ryan Shearer of Leaning Spruce Stock Farm to maintain a small select herd under Ryan’s management for several more years.

Lyall was honored to receive the Honorary President Award in 2002 and the Canadian Angus Association 50 year award at the 2017 AGM in Brandon. This award is to recognize the Pure bred Angus Breeders who have maintained a registered herd with the CAA for 50 years. His contribution to the Purebred Angus cattle business in Manitoba and the Manitoba Angus Association, will forever be appreciated and will always be part of the rich history of Angus in Manitoba. Rest in Peace Lyall.
