NEW CARGO THEFT METHODS Cargo theft is a serious issue in Canada, costing around $5 billion each year. Previously, cargo theft usually happened when trucks were parked. Now, thieves are targeting moving vehicles, which is a new challenge. Some new tactics to steal cargo can include: 1. Following Trucks: Thieves follow loaded trucks and break into the trailers while the truck is moving. They grab cargo and then exit at a traffic light. 2. Stopping Trucks: Thieves stop in front of a truck, allowing one of them to get into the trailer. The thief then gathers cargo and exits at the next traffic light. To combat this, the following measures are recommended: 1. Drivers should stay alert and be aware of their surroundings at all times. Maintain a 360-degree circle of awareness. 2. Use padlocks on loaded trailers and trucks to slow down thieves. A high-quality padlock can buy time and deter theft. 3. Travel in well-lit areas whenever possible.
