Jeff’s Jottings

Welcome to the 25th edition of the Wenonah Warbler, as we look back on our 2025 season and ahead to our milestone 30th Anniversary season at Wenonah!

Our first Warbler was produced in the mid-1990s and after a few years’ break during the pandemic, we are thrilled to return to producing the full edition of the Wenonah Warbler each December. The Warbler will continue to be available in a hardcopy format (mailed to current members of our community, active alumni, and many others) and as a virtual Warbler (available online).

The 2025 season at Wenonah was one with many highlights.

Summer Camp saw campers and staff travel from around the world to the shores of Clear and Saw Lakes. We also reintroduced the very popular Period Five introductory experience and launched ODYSSEY, our very well-received program for 13and 14-year olds.

Wenonah Outdoors welcomed 47 distinct groups in May, June, September, and October. During 2025, Wenonah Outdoors had it all! From schools to association partnerships to outdoor educators to corporate experiences to families to 400+ taking part in our Fall Women’s Weekends.

This edition of the Warbler celebrates highlights of the 2025 season AND looks ahead to what is sure to be a memorable 30th Anniversary season in 2026.

On behalf of our Senior Leadership Team, a HUGE thanks once again for your support, encouragement and engagement with Wenonah.

Jeff Bradshaw Founder/Owner of Camp Wenonah

Aki Repeats as Challenge Cup Champs in 2025!

Another STELLAR Wenonah Games season in 2025 resulted in the closest Challenge Cup final scores in history.

After a narrow Dawaa victory over Zibbins during July Camp, Aki overcame a huge deficit, won August Camp, and narrowly took the Challenge Cup for 2025.

Camp Wenonah is Healthy, Mentally!

Camp life is full of fun and adventure but it can also bring challenges. That’s why Camp Wenonah’s Health Care Team includes dedicated mental health support, ensuring campers and staff feel their best all Summer long.

The Quiet Room

New in 2024, the Quiet Room has now been in operation for two Summers. Located behind the Health Centre, the Quiet Room is a calm, cozy space for campers and staff to use at the discretion of the Health Care Team or a Senior Leadership Team member. The room is used throughout the season for all conversations with Suzanne or Ashley, whether they be in-person or on Zoom. Many current and former campers and staff know how tricky it can be to find a quiet, private spot at Camp. That’s why the Quiet Room was intentionally created to support the Camp Wenonah community right where they are. It’s become an important space for campers and staff to de-stress, recharge, and put healthy coping strategies into practice.

Adventure, Relaxation, and Camaraderie at Women’s Weekends

From first-time participants to seasoned veterans, adult women of all ages enjoyed weekend getaways at Wenonah this September.

These weekends offered the opportunity to try out a variety of activities, enjoy community, or to simply relax. Activities included Camp favourites such as campfires, sailing, crafts, canoeing, and archery, in addition to specialty workshops led by talented professionals including Yoga, Sound Baths, Forest Bathing, Drumming, Meditation, Wellness Workshops, Art Classes, Seasonal Baking Lessons, and Wine Tasting sessions. A variety of massage services were also enjoyed by many.

We’re pleased to confirm our 2026 Women’s Weekend dates:

Women’s Weekend #1

September 11-13, 2026

Women’s Weekend #2

A few thoughts about the experience from a first-time and returning participant:

First-Time Participant

“In my 48 years of life, I have never had a weekend that brought me as much joy and peace. I went by myself and was placed in a cabin with 6 women who I now call my friends. We laughed and sang during trivia night, giggled like teenagers from our bunks before bed and shared our hopes & fears over late night nachos. Driving back to Toronto, my heart felt so full. Even now, weeks later, I look at the pictures from that weekend and it fuels me. It was a magical experience, reminding me of the power of human connection. I can't wait to go back next year!!”

Returning Participant

“I have been attending Women's Weekends for 15 years. The staff have created an uplifting environment where women can relax, reconnect and rediscover themselves. The activities are thoughtful and the facilitators are kind, knowledgeable and passionate about helping everyone get the most out of their weekend. In addition, the Chef prepares nutritious and delicious meals. What always stands out for me is the incredible sense of community of women from all walks of life. I cannot recommend these weekends enough for women looking to unwind, recharge and remember their strength and potential.”

We Get Letters!

Each year, we are thrilled to receive heartfelt emails, cards and letters from members of our community. We treasure these reflections on life at Wenonah. Here are just a few looking back on the 2025 season:

Camp has been one of the greatest constants in my life. The magic is hard to put into words but its impact on me has been immeasurable. It has shaped my family and my closest friendships. The growth I’ve had because of Camp is something I will always carry with me. Now, seeing Wenonah through our children’s eyes has been such a gift, something I didn’t have the chance to experience as a child, but now get to witness through them!

I know after 30 years, Camp has changed, and yet the more it changes, the more it somehow stays the same. For all of us who have been part of it, Camp remains a constant light, a place that continues to shape who we are, and connects us throughout the year, no matter the distance between us.

From, an alum and current Wenonah parent

I just wanted to extend a special thank you to you and the staff that worked with our school group when we visited in June. It was very important to us to be able to provide the students with a fun, stress free few days at Camp. I was standing with a bunch of students and they were all sharing stories about Camp. What you do and what your staff does really makes an impact and I saw it firsthand. Your staff did so much to help us have a good time. The kids would definitely all know their names, because they have been talking about them almost nonstop since we left Camp! So this thank you is extended to you and the whole staff who worked with us. You all truly made a huge difference in the lives of the students!

From, a Wenonah Outdoors group leader

for children to experience this kind of community, growth and lifelong friendships. We've always enjoyed hearing about what Wenonah has meant for them. Their stories helped us dream about what Camp could mean for my son, and this August, he was finally able to live those stories himself.

When he returned home, he was very excited to share with me (something unusual for a preteen boy) his stories about all the new activities he got to try and the wonderful people he met. He loved doing canoeing, playing mini golf and going for a run every morning. He also enjoyed the food and couldn't stop talking about the breakfast pastries that became his favourite. He made new friends and loved that everyone at Camp was friendly and fun; he also really enjoyed the Wenonah Games and carries his Zibbins charm with pride. This experience contributed to his independence and confidence. He learned how to manage himself away from home, make decisions, care for himself, work in a team and develop a love for the outdoors. I am sure that Wenonah will always be one of his most cherished childhood experiences.

From, a first-time Summer Camp parent

I just finished an exchange program with another Wenonah alumni staff where we spent a semester studying in the UK. We were lucky enough to have our siblings visit us and found ourselves in Scotland for a weekend. On one day spent in Edinburgh, six of us climbed a big hill called Arthur's Seat. At the top of the hill, we shared a moment where we reflected on our time at Camp. We talked about how magical, important and special our camper years were in forming us into the people we are today. We shared with each other the lessons and experiences we gained from working on staff that we take with us in our everyday lives, and how working with such a diverse group of campers and staff has broadened our perspective and deepened our appreciation for having Wenonah in our lives. We pushed back our dinner reservation three times from the top of this hill because we couldn't stop sharing stories and appreciation for what Camp has given us. I feel so lucky that no matter where in the world or how long it’s been since some of us have spent a summer at Camp, the Wenonah community continues to love and support each other. I just wanted to share how lucky and grateful we are that Camp has changed our lives for the better and remains something that we take with us into the world every day. So, thank you to you and every person who makes the magic of Wenonah happen.

From, a current Wenonah staff member

My daughter absolutely loved it. She loved the programming, she loved the staff, she loved her cabinmates and fellow travellers on the ODYSSEY! ("Every single person was just SO NICE!")

Just plain happier with a newfound feeling that there are kind, open people in the world. And she's part of a group chat with her camper group that carries on the connection with great delight! Wenonah has broken through, and we know that we'll be sending her there again!

From, a new ODYSSEY Program participant parent

I will admit I was nervous about sending our son to Camp this summer (especially as we live out east), it felt almost too big. There was the pressure of ‘oh my gosh I really want (or need!) him to love it,’ along with the parental worries of how he’d do at Camp. I have to sayhow quickly my fears dissipated being back at Camp. I was reminded of what a delightful and magical spot Wenonah is (seeing it through someone’s eyes for the first time is pretty special!), reminded of the beauty and excitement that Camp holds for us all, and most of all, I was reminded about how, all these years later, Wenonah is special. I can’t tell you how much it reassured me to chat with staff, to hear how they talked to him, to see how they took care of Camp - what hard and important work that is. I feel very lucky that he’ll get to experience the safety and joy of Wenonah this summer.

2026 Marks 30 Years of Camp Wenonah

2025 marked the 60th Anniversary of the first use of the Wenonah property as a Summer Camp in 1965. Camp Oak-a-Lea opened its doors that year and welcomed campers to a unique program focused on traditional camping activities coupled with a deep appreciation for the natural world and environment. Fast forward to the mid-1990s and Wenonah was born as a new camping operation.

In 2026, we celebrate our 30th Anniversary season. A 30th Anniversary Committee has been hard at work for several years. Core Committee members include Liz Mossington, Jason Monteith, Mike Stewart, Amy Joliat, Renata Bradshaw, Sydney Feore, and Jeff Bradshaw. They in turn are being supported by dozens of members of the Wenonah community.

Wenonah’s 30th Anniversary season includes 30 initiatives planned throughout 2026 to engage campers, staff, Wenonah families, FOW members and everyone that has a special connection to our community.A dedicated 30th Anniversary section of the Wenonah website will launch early in 2026.

New Main Swim Docks

Our 2026 30th Anniversary capital campaign will be the installation of a new Main Swim Dock system in late 2026, in place to start the 2027 season.

SPOTLIGHT: Team Joliat

There are many people that trace their first engagement at Wenonah from the 1990s and continue to present day as active members of our community. As we celebrate our 30th Anniversary in 2026, we wanted to share the story of one family. An original Wenonah staff member who met her future husband through a camping connection. On their own and as a couple, they’ve been a part of the Wenonah story for three decades. Their two sons have been a part of the fabric of life at Wenonah as young campers, leadership participants and in one case, a staff member the past two seasons. Meet our own “Fantastic Four”: Team Joliat.

Amy, Paul, Cole and Reid have charted paths at Wenonah independently and as a beloved family within our community. Here’s their story.

Amy was interviewed and hired by Renata Bradshaw and Tom Appleyard which Amy describes as a pivotal moment in her life. As an original staff, Amy worked several seasons at Wenonah and held a variety of roles including Program Director, POLARIS Director, Spring staff and Tripping. Since those early days, Amy also worked with Women’s Weekend programs. Amy’s wedding in 2002 included many of

In 2013, Amy joined the ranks of camper parent when both Cole and Reid attended WEEnonah for the first time. Amy has never wavered in her support of Wenonah and has played a very active role as a FOW member since the 1990s including significant roles with anniversary season events and planning (and Amy has a central role with the administration for our 30th Anniversary season in 2026). As an educator in a senior role with Crescent School in Toronto, Amy also found herself part of a team that brought students to Wenonah Outdoors. And over the past few years, Amy has returned to her roots working in a part-time capacity as an Administrative Assistant for Summer Camp.

In Amy’s words:

I started Camp not really knowing what I was getting into, and Wenonah altered the path I was on. It's where I discovered meaningful and lasting friendships, discovered new strengths and felt a true sense of belonging. The feeling of community, friendship and inclusion that is fostered on the shores of Clear Lake is what makes Camp Wenonah truly special. I feel so fortunate to be a part of this community.

Paul first met Amy in the Spring of 1998 on the golf course during a Spring Staff social event. After pursuing his MBA in Edmonton, Paul moved back to Toronto in 2002, married Amy and after 10 years of working for a sponsorship marketing agency, Paul

Amy with Wenonah friends/current Associate Directors, Jason Monteith & Liz Mossington

began working for Sun Life where he has spent the last 15 years overseeing global sponsorship and philanthropy. Paul has been a remarkable part of the Wenonah community including as an active member of the FOW network, supporting many Wenonah initiatives and significantly with Amy, spearheaded the 25th Anniversary Silent Auction which raised over $60,000 for the construction of the new Caron Brick Centre (CBC).

Paul reflects:

Spending my formative years attending summer camp as a camper, leader in training, counsellor, and non-counselling staff member have helped me become the person I am today. It’s been amazing to see our boys’ involvement at Camp provide them with the same lifechanging experience. Wenonah’s community is something that each of us deeply treasure. It provides each of us with a shared sense of belonging, not just in the summer, but throughout the year. Wenonah is our family.

Cole started as a WEEnonah camper in 2013 and has been part of Wenonah ever since. Participating in the POLARIS and WCIT programs, Cole received his Ten-Year Camper Award in 2023. After his first year on staff in 2024 as a Resource Staff, Cole returned as the Photographer and Videographer in 2025. Cole captured stunning images and video that received so much acclaim during 2025. A graduate of Crescent School, Cole is in his second year at UBC in Film Production with a Master of Management.

I love seeing the same people year after year and building lasting connections that continue outside of Camp. Last year at UBC, I didn’t know many people in Vancouver. Within the first few weeks, I was invited to dinner at the home of other Wenonah staff who were upper year students at UBC. We ate dinner, talked about camp memories and life in Vancouver. It made me realize that Camp truly has roots everywhere, and it helped me feel at home in a new city. Cole shares:

Reid started at Wenonah in 2013 alongside Cole and has followed a similar path. Most recently, Reid completed the August WCIT program in 2025 and along the way made incredible friendships, sees Wenonah as his home away from home and stays in touch with friends from Camp year round. Reid received his Ten-Year Camper Award in 2023 and in a major come from behind victory, won the 2025 Male Decathlon during Wenonah Games. Reid is in his final year at Crescent School and enjoys the connection with the Wenonah community around the world including with Originals families as far away as Singapore.

As Reid says:

I love that Camp gives me the chance to reconnect with friends who I don't get to see throughout the year. Even though we live so far apart and we don't see each other often, each summer we pick up right where we left off.

We are deeply grateful to Amy, Paul, Cole and Reid for their enduring contributions to Wenonah.

Introducing ODYSSEY

The launch of the ODYSSEY program in 2025 was a great success. This new program for 13-14 year olds invited participants to experience a unique five- or seven-day opportunity unlike anything Wenonah has offered in the past. With a strong focus on skill development and community building, ODYSSEY took Wenonah by storm.

Debuting during Period One A and Period Five in 2025, ODYSSEY offered “Program Clinics” which allowed participants to develop their skills in seven main program areas: sailing, canoeing, creative arts, kayaking, landsports (archery, tennis, The Pines), climbing, and outdoor living skills. Led by veteran current staff and Wenonah FOW members (staff alumni), these two-hour Clinics provided ODYSSEY participants with in-depth learning, skill development and new perspectives and appreciation. Importantly, the skills learned in these clinics were then applied during other major ODYSSEY program moments including the overnight canoe trip on Saw Lake or during the Amazing Race which challenged participants to accomplish tasks across Wenonah and reach the finish line!

the “Floating Bagel Bar Breakfast”, the “Progressive Dinner”, and the “Barb’s Place BARBeque” were highlights. With a small, tightknit group, the program was adaptable to the interests of the campers. During program times such as ODYSSEY Options, campers could explore new program spaces not covered by the Program Clinics and expand their skillset with the support of accomplished staff.

With the success of ODYSSEY’s first season behind us, we are excited to see this unique program continue to grow and evolve. 2026 will bring the introduction of a third ODYSSEY week offered during Period Three A. We are looking forward to many Wenonah campers experiencing their own ODYSSEY in the years to come!
