Mission Merrie-Woode is a sanctuary of rarest beauty which inspires a lasting awareness of God’s presence. The Mission of Camp Merrie-Woode is to use that setting to nurture the physical, intellectual and spiritual growth of girls and young women through traditional camp activities and outdoor adventures. In this friendly, non-competitive community of simplified living, each individual is valued for who she is and who she will become.

Tiny Sparks of 2020 Camp happened during the summer of 2020. While it did not happen as it traditionally does, along the shores of Lake Fairfield, it happened instead across the country and around the globe through social media and virtual content. Camp connections were more important than ever, since so many members of our Merrie-Woode family felt isolated at home and longed to be back at their beloved place of rarest beauty. Throughout this Annual Report, we highlight the stories of how we kept the spark alive, even in the face of physical distance. Looking back at these moments, we remember the joy we felt seeing and hearing from our Merrie-Woode friends and the reassurance of knowing that Camp is not just a place, but the bonds between all those who cherish it.

Dear Friends, “Love is where you find it, and I’ve found mine here, so give me the light of the campfire, and songs we love to hear.” This past year, we proved that the love that we share for Merrie-Woode is stronger than ever, stronger than the virus that kept us apart last summer, stronger than the divisive forces that wrought so much heartache in our nation. You, our Merrie-Woode family, joined together and bravely faced the troubling unknown presented by our suspended operations. With incredible gifts from every corner of the country, and even across the globe, you collectively raised over $1,000,000 to make up the budget shortfall caused by Covid-19. We thank each and every one of you, our camper parents who donated their tuition, our alumnae who doubled their annual giving or gave an extra year on their Centennial pledge, our amazing Half Way Up challengers who inspired us all with a magnificent matching gift, our young alumnae who broke their record with the highest ever revenue total for the Young Alumnae Challenge – you showed what loving Merrie-Woode and giving it your best really means. The essential truth of what we collectively experienced through last year’s travails is that “Love never fails.” It is love that compels us to throw our hearts into a challenge, work tirelessly, and give generously to safeguard this camp that we cherish. Within each of us, our tiny spark of love for MerrieWoode derives from our unique experiences of camp. Some of us recall the peace and connectedness that we feel when sitting quietly beside Lake Fairfield. Others remember the hugs and warmth of genuine acceptance from camp friends who know our true selves.

Among these many shared memories of Merrie-Woode are Sundays in Chapel, when we feel extraordinarily close to God. Christian faith infuses our experience at Merrie-Woode, as captured in one part of the Merrie-Woode Plaque, “God gave us a place of rarest beauty, and since I first beheld it, I have tried to match his gift as best I could, with permeating love and honesty.” It is your permeating love that inspired the fantastic success of our Be A Light Campaign this year. Likewise, this commitment to permeating love and honesty has led Merrie-Woode to begin an introspection through our new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Ad Hoc Committee. We see this effort as a natural extension of living out our Mission, Philosophy, and Values, as the Board conducts the ongoing work of our Strategic Plan. As we review our history and operations, we renew and strengthen our dedication to making Merrie-Woode a welcoming and inclusive community for all. When our campers gather around the (real live) campfire once again, joyfully singing their favorite camp tunes, their songs will convey not only their own love for Merrie-Woode, but the love that each of you holds in your heart, the love that inspired your commitment to see Merrie-Woode endure. Our deep gratitude goes out to you all for these generous gifts and for keeping that tiny spark of love alive for MerrieWoode, this year and always.

Be a Light 2020 Annual Fund Campaign

While it was clearly the right decision for the health and safety of the Merrie-Woode community, it also meant an enormous fundraising effort would be required to persevere through this loss of revenue. Even after making all possible adjustments in terms of expenses, Merrie-Woode needed to raise approximately $1 million to overcome Covid-related shortfalls. The Board turned to the leadership of its seasoned fundraising experts, Julie Harrower Diaz, Chair of the Board’s Development Committee, and Trustees Stephanie Blessey Lilley and Elly Lane, who recently co-chaired the Centennial Campaign. With input from the staff, Board, and key Centennial Campaign volunteers, the fundraising team developed an ambitious plan to raise the needed revenue.

FUNDS

The 2020 season presented challenges unlike any that Merrie-Woode has ever experienced. When the Merrie-Woode Board of Trustees made the difficult decision to suspend camp operations this past summer, it was with the knowledge that the impact would be significant, as tuition is Merrie-Woode’s main source of revenue.

In June, Merrie-Woode announced its most aspirational Annual Fund campaign to date, Be A Light – Annual Fund 2020. The effort launched with a beautifully written letter, authored by Trustee Mathilde Villere Currence and alumna Rowanne McIntyre McKnight, speaking to the importance and meaning of Camp in 2020. Another special communication directed to many of our Centennial Campaign supporters came from Centennial Co-Chairs Nancy Conkle Swann and Liz Counce Irwin, together with Centennial Campaign Co-Chairs Elly Lane and Stephanie Blessey Lilley. In true Merrie-Woode fashion, volunteers from all generations, led by Stephanie and Elly, picked up the phone immediately and began calling members of the community to ask for their support. The Merrie-Woode family responded with overwhelming generosity, as it always does during times of need. Many parents donated all or portions of their tuition dollars, while devoted alumnae and friends stepped up to support the Be A Light Campaign with gifts equaling an extra year of their Centennial pledge or double their usual Annual Fund gift. As of late September, MerrieWoode had received $520,000 in commitments, over half of what was needed to meet the operations shortfall. Building upon this early momentum, several fundraising volunteers and generous donors formulated an idea for a special matching gift campaign. A group of eight supporters (that soon grew to ten) offered a combined total of $250,000 as a challenge gift, once Merrie-Woode raised another $250,000. This new matching gift sparked a renewed energy among the Merrie-Woode family to reach our fundraising goal. Thanks to the work of our many volunteers and the generosity of the donors who responded to the call, Merrie-Woode raised a total of $1,205,102 in 2020. Camp will be forever grateful for this inspirational effort!

When our special 2020 fundraising effort reached the “Half Way Up” point, a generous group of alumnae and friends joined together to challenge the Merrie-Woode family with a matching gift to raise the remainder of the funds. This highly successful effort resulted in a total of $413,380 in new gifts to Merrie-Woode, which together with the $250,000 in matching funds, helped us reach our fundraising goal!

VIRTUAL JC PROGRAM Betsy Reese Helms adapted the Junior Counselor curriculum into a virtual program facilitated over Zoom. The June and Main Session JCs of 2020 met as a group multiple times a week with Betsy and former JC Leader, Courtney Foster, to tackle leadership and counselor training sessions. The JC leadership program was such a great success that it won the Edie Klein Award for Program Excellence from the ACA – Southeast!

staff on site, work continued on several projects that are part of Merrie-Woode’s Master Site Plan. In addition to the creation of the Conservation Meadow, Merrie-Woode’s Facilities Crew restored the hill on Wildside, creating new paths and implementing erosion control measures. To even the slope of the hill, Merrie-Woode added soil that was retained during the excavation of the Old Castle site.

Thanks to the generosity of many donors, Merrie-Woode realized a long-held dream of establishing an Endowment to serve as a permanent, income-generating asset to support the operation of Camp Merrie-Woode. DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION INITIATIVE

The Committee’s primary function is to address ideas and concerns regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion at camp. This Committee has met monthly since October 2020 and has generated recommendations that the Ad Hoc Committee Board Liaison communicates to the Executive Directors, Board Chair, Chair of Programming Committee, and full Board for consideration and action.

In 2020, Merrie-Woode launched a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiative, which includes the creation of a DEI Ad Hoc Committee of Merrie-Woode alumnae and parents. CONSERVATION MEADOW During 2020, Merrie-Woode embarked upon one of the first conservation initiatives of its new Master Site Plan, creating a meadow habitat at the Inn Site between the location of the Old Fairfield Inn and the lakeshore. Many of you may remember the grassy hill that stretched from the flat spot on top of the hill to the lake. Camp has allowed the natural grasses and newly planted grasses, reeds and wildflowers, to grow, with mowed paths and picnic areas circulating between the sections of tall grass. The new landscape design serves both sustainability and recreational goals. The grasses, reeds, and wildflowers will help restore wetland character to low-lying areas, while providing a threshold between civilization and the wilderness. The meadow will connect and frame the gathering spaces with an “open meander” path guiding circulation around the lake edge and through the woodland area. It will also stabilize lawn and meadow soils, while reducing maintenance costs.
