Mission Merrie-Woode is a sanctuary of rarest beauty which inspires a lasting awareness of God’s presence. The Mission of Camp Merrie-Woode is to use that setting to nurture the physical, intellectual and spiritual growth of girls and young women through traditional camp activities and outdoor adventures. Dear Friends, Above all 2021 was a summer of joy! After nearly two years spent apart, sequestered in our homes and socially distant from friends and family, coming back together at Camp brought an enormous amount of happiness to our campers, our staff, and the entire Merrie-Woode community. The joy of welcoming campers back this summer was beautifully captured in our Opening Day video that took the internet by storm and earned a spot on The Today Show. People throughout the country rejoiced with us as we watched our Merrie-Woode counselors skipping, dancing, and singing about seeing each other “For the First Time in Forever”! With a global pandemic still present in our country, the decision to reopen for our 103rd summer required both enormous planning and a giant leap of faith. The Senior Staff spent countless hours reviewing every single one of our Camp protocols, implementing health guidelines, creating new Opening Day Drop Off procedures, pre-scheduling activities, reorganizing meal service, and making numerous adjustments to our activity schedules to keep our campers safe and healthy. Running Camp during a pandemic required a great amount of faith in our staff and support from our families to make it a success. We thank you for partnering with us to ensure that our 2021 summer was a happy and healthy experience for all! Along with the careful planning to keep Merrie-Woode healthy and safe this past summer came a number of additional expenses. From extra staff in the Dining Hall kitchen to special supplies, such as digital thermometers, Covid rapid tests, masks, and hand sanitizer, Merrie-Woode relied upon the generous gifts from alumnae, parents, and friends to meet the increased budget need. 2
Thanks to the devotion of our Merrie-Woode family, we were able to fund these additional expenses and ensure that our operations were well-staffed and well-supplied. In this year’s Green and Grey Gratitude: The MerrieWoode Foundation Annual Report, we recognize the many extraordinary supporters who made Camp possible last year. We are also grateful for the many new gifts to our Endowment, and we want to express our special appreciation for the two new endowments established in 2021: The Ginger Somerville Hallock Endowment for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and The Harriet Matthews Jackson Endowment for Camperships. Our Merrie-Woode Endowment continues to be a critical asset and growing source of operational support. For the happy smiles, the squeals of laughter echoing off of Old Bald, and the joy of being together again beneath the starry skies, we thank you. Annual Fund The Merrie-Woode family has once again inspired us with their extraordinarily generous giving to the Annual Fund! With a total of 953 gifts received, Merrie-Woode reached a new height of $362,622 given to our 2021 Annual Fund! We are so thankful for the generosity of our community and the devotion that our donors show each year. The Merrie-Woode Foundation, Inc. relies on the Annual Fund to support Camp’s operations, including the programming, staffing, and facilities. The Annual Fund also provides resources for camperships, tuition scholarships that provide financial assistance to many camp families and to young women who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend summer camp. In addition to our traditional Annual Fund Campaign, we hosted our eighth annual Young Alumnae Challenge. With the promise of a matching gift from three anonymous donors, 247 Young Alumnae gave a total of $25,369, succeeding in their attempt to raise a full campership for each of the June, Main, and August session in three days. The matching gifts, providing a second full campership for each of the June, Main, and August sessions, brought the overall total raised to $41,344. All funds given to the 2021 Young Alumnae Challenge will support camperships awarded for the 2022 summer. Contributions to the Merrie-Woode Foundation, Inc. are tax deductible for individuals, corporations, and foundations within the limits of section 501(c)3 of the IRS code.

Opening Day at Inn Site
For the first time in Merrie-Woode’s history, Camp drop off took place entirely at the Inn Site in a highly efficient drive thru format! In order to maintain social distancing, campers and their families arrived in groups assigned by the camper’s age. Their first stop was a health screening and temperature check, followed by the traditional visit with Denice and Jim to learn their cabin assignments. Next they received some help from staff to unload their luggage for transport to their cabins. After saying goodbye to their parents, campers joined their cabinmates for a van ride into Camp. We appreciate all of our families for enthusiastically supporting these special drop off procedures that helped us start our sessions in a safe and healthy manner!

Double Drama Fun Last summer’s campers and Drama Staff pulled off the amazing feat of producing two shows at each session! In June, the Pages and Yeoman entertained their fellow campers with the magical tale of Pinocchio, while the Squires and Knights created an original production, Miss Annie’s Boo-Whoop-Dee-Do Revue.
During Main Session, the Pages and Yeoman staged a traditional commedia dell’arte production of Androcles and the Lion, complete with their own pageant wagon. Finally, the Squires and Knights treated us to Camp Merrie-Woode’s first-ever rendition of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Campers and staff alike were dazzled by the mystical story punctuated by a moon rise over Chapel during the final monologue. An enormous round of applause is due to the hardworking players of 2021!

Cabin Tables in Dining Hall
As part of our Covid protocols, we created cabin family groups that ate all meals together at their own tables in the Dining Hall. Smaller six foot rectangular tables replaced the traditional wooden tables to allow all cabins to sit together. (Do not fear – our wooden tables will be back for 2022!) Special foods, such as soup, that are generally found on our salad bars, were served by the kitchen staff from “neighborhood tables” in the center of the Dining Hall. Counselors performed double duty, setting and clearing tables all summer. Once again, we thank our amazing staff for all that they did to keep the Merrie-Woode community safe and healthy last summer.

ENDOWMENT FUNDS
Thanks to the generosity of many donors, Merrie-Woode realized a longheld dream of establishing an Endowment to serve as a permanent, income-generating asset to support the operation of Camp Merrie-Woode. The Centennial Campaign included a goal of $2 million to create several funds within the Endowment to support various aspects of Merrie-Woode’s property and overall program well into the next century. Within the larger Endowment are general funds supporting operations, as well as individual restricted funds supporting camperships, programming, building preservation, and conservation. The campaign provided individual donors and groups of donors with the opportunity to create named endowments with gifts of $100,000 or more. Living in rustic quarters, campers explore their interests and build their skills in areas of their choice. Our programming focuses on self-discovery, offering an array of outdoor and indoor activities in a non- competitive setting. Campers are encouraged to set goals and may, over time, achieve a high level of competence, gaining self-confidence in the process. We strive to attract campers, staff and camp families from varied backgrounds who value youthful time spent in nature. Merrie-Woode is a place where every girl is supported as an individual while acquiring a deepened awareness of God’s creation and an expanded awareness of the world around her. Merrie-Woode’s campers have gone on to contribute to their communities in meaningful ways throughout their lifetimes, in part because of the rich network of friendships
