PUBLISHED ONCE EACH YEAR FOR THE CAMPERS, LEADERS, & STAFF OF

Every image of Camp Dudley you’ve ever seen—on a TV, a phone, the website, a slideshow in Witherbee, or splashed across the pages of this book—has been made of the same simple thing: pixels. Tiny squares of red, green, and blue light. Individually, they’re nothing remarkable. They’re quiet. They’re small. But together, aligned with purpose, they create the pictures that help us remember who we are, and to me, that feels a lot like what a summer at Camp is.
A season at Camp Dudley is built of countless small moments—some vivid, some subtle, many invisible to anyone but the people living inside them. A highfive on the way to the sidelines at halftime. A whispered joke to a cabinmate during a meal in Beckman. A tough conversation handled with grace. A camper taking a risk and doing something they’ve never done before. A leader choosing kindness even when no one is watching. On their own, these moments can seem tiny, even forgettable. But stacked side by side—like the RGB building blocks of every photo the Pubs team takes—they form the full image of a summer.
Pixels only matter when they work together. They only become something meaningful when they line up, light up, and trust that their small contribution will help reveal the bigger picture. Camp is the same. The magic isn’t in any single moment or person; it’s in the way they combine. It’s in the way your e!orts, your energy, your quirks, your strengths, your laughter, and your stories blend into everyone else’s. That’s what makes a summer feel whole. That’s what makes this
place unforgettable. As I look back on my eighth attempt at doing The Last Whistle, I’m reminded that this book is really just a collection of pixels too—millions of tiny pieces that come together to celebrate a community far greater than any single frame. And every single person who set foot on these shores of Lake Champlain this summer is one of those pixels: distinct, essential, and part of something much larger.
And much like a summer at Camp Dudley, this book would not have been possible without an incredible team of people coming together to make it happen. Thank you, Matt, for trusting me with this again. Thank you, Evan, for all your input throughout the process and in the editing and production stages. Thank you, Dawn, for all your help with the database and roster. Thank you, Anita, for all your help proofreading and for your general moral support throughout the process of making this book—and in life. Thank you, Kyle, for being a co-chief photographer with me again this summer. You continue to impress me with your photography and videography skills, especially given how new this all still is for you. And finally, a HUGE thank you to Brendan “Lefty” Loughman. You’ve been by my side every step of the way with this book and throughout my Publications journey, and I could not be more appreciative. Thank you.

written and presented annually by the last whistle editor on the final night of camp
August 16, 2025 • Awarded at the end of every summer, the Last Whistle Dedication is one of the highest honors one can receive at Camp Dudley. It is presented to a member of our community who shows devotion and love toward others and this place we all cherish while living with an unwavering commitment to our motto: “The Other Fellow First.” It is a tradition that honors someone who has given themselves fully to Camp Dudley — and to all of us who call this place home. And tonight, I’d like to begin this dedication by talking about one of our four core values: stewardship.

Stewardship is a noun, defined in the dictionary as “the conducting, supervising, or managing of something… especially: the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care.” At Dudley, stewardship means taking responsibility for what has been entrusted to us — this land, this community and its people, our motto, our mission and, most importantly, the well-being of each other.
It is caring for what we love so that it thrives long after we are gone. And there are few people that embody stewardship more fully than tonight’s dedicee, #16999, Jess Storey. Congratulations Jess!!
Many of you know Jess best from her role at Swim Point. Morning dips. Swim meets. Swim parties. Lessons. Water polo. Choice time. Extravaganzas. Evening dips. Swim Point is one of the busiest areas of Camp, with something seemingly happening almost every waking minute of the day, and Jess is there for all of it. She is the steady, tireless presence that makes it all run. She trains and manages her team thoughtfully, with diligence and care, while ensuring that every camper, leader, and sta! member feels safe and encouraged in the water, and more broadly at Camp.
But that’s only the tip of the iceberg. Behind the scenes and all year long, Jess is Camp’s Stewardship Director. In the summer, she turns over cabins for visiting chapel speakers, board members, and volunteers—often with only an hour between departures and arrivals, and during the year, she does the same, while she also plans menus, shops, and cooks for board weekends and a myriad of other o!-season events. Last year, she came up with the idea for, and executed, the “Family Guide” that you all receive prior to coming here, giving everyone a comprehensive place to find the answers to any of their questions, doing what she can to ensure a positive experience at Camp. The list goes on and on, and while she does all of this and more all year long, she somehow manages to do it all in the summer while also keeping Swim Point humming. That’s Jess. She makes sure that anyone living at or visiting Camp feels comfortable and at home.
Jess is also a steward of people. Fitness and well-being are her passions, and I mean that in a deeper way than just “going to the gym and trying to eat well.” All year, she leads multiple workouts a week for our team, in addition to running her own studio up the road. She encourages everyone to stay active in every season, modeling how movement, diet, togetherness, and being outdoors are essential to living well. If you’re ever up here in the winter, don’t be surprised to see a group of us bundled up on a run, or a “wog,” on the Dudley Road in February, with snow and wind whipping through the rolling fields. And despite what that visual might make you feel, it’s actually pretty great.
Her passion for food — and its health and community benefits — is what led Jess and Matt to start the Dudley Garden and the Farm to Plate program early in Matt’s tenure as director, which has become one of our most popular activities

and program areas, quite literally “growing” in size from summer to summer. Jess was also a driving force behind Camp’s decision to move to self-operated dining, in an e!ort to work more closely with local farms and have more control over the quality and sourcing of our food. And I think every adult here can agree: the food we had as campers was nothing compared to the phenomenal cuisine Joey and his team have been serving us all summer.
And most importantly, Jess is a steward of spirit. She leads quietly. With kindness. With humility. With deep care. While some leaders are loud and larger-than-life, especially at Camp Dudley where that number is probably more than just “some,” Jess reminds us of the power of quiet leadership — of strength rooted not in volume, but in consistency, compassion, and heart. While we are grateful for all that Matt has given this community and Camp as Director during his tenure, we are even luckier that he has had Jess by his side — shaping, supporting, and strengthening Dudley every step of the way.
As a closing note: a few years ago, Jess’s son Carter started a sweatshirt and t-shirt company called “I Love My Mom.” Maybe you’ve seen some
around Camp this summer. A simple but powerful message — and great-looking sweatshirts.
Carter, and Ellie and Rachel, we all love your mom, and to the whole Storey family — thank you for sharing her with us. We are all better for it.
With that, it is my great honor to dedicate this 87th Last Whistle to our friend, a model of kindness, a phenomenal steward, and an extraordinary member of the Dudley family: #16999, Jess Storey.
Congratulations Jess!

July 4, 2025 • Good morning, Camp Dudley, and Happy Fourth of July. My name is Pete Burns, and I am a co-Leader in Colgate Cabin this summer. It is an honor to share this Chapel Talk with you.
You all are American heroes. Yes, all of you: Leaders, Staff, Campers. Why? Because you go to Camp Dudley, and because you live your lives putting “the other fellow first.” Camp’s motto, which you know all too well, is old, but not old-fashioned. It has defined the lives of young men and women who had the privilege to attend and work at Camp Dudley and Camp Kiniya, and everyone here in Beckman Hall this morning. Yet, I fear we do not realize just how vital our motto is to the history and character of the United States. Putting “the other fellow first” is signing The Declaration of Independence, affirming that we “pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.” It is, as James Madison writes in The Federalist, resigning some of our individual privileges to ensure the safety and success of both ourselves and everyone else. It is the soldier picking up his comrade as they storm Omaha Beach, the nurse working overtime during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the first responders who “ran toward the danger” in the wake of the tragedies of September 11, 2001. These people, these moments, truly are characterized by lives lived by devotion to others.
Yes, we share a tendency toward selflessness and sevrice with this country’s finest and bravest people, but more importantly, Camp shapes us into admirable citizens. As President Jimmy Carter said in his farewell address, “the only title in our democracy superior to that of president [is] the title of citizen.” In fact, this idea goes all the way back to Ancient Rome. Cicero, a Roman statesman and philosopher, coined the concept of civic duty founded in justice, moderation, and service. The citizen and leader alike must put the good of others, and the republic, before their self-interest. When one citizen suffers, the rest begin to suffer, too.
At Dudley, we see something similar. When our cabinmates feel sad, we feel sad for them. When our teammates get injured on the lacrosse field, we feel anxious about their health and want them to get better. We also do everything in our power to make sure that everyone is feeling their best. We clean our cabins to maintain an organized and comfortable living space for ourselves and our cabinmates, and perhaps also
get some ice cream at the end of the week. We cheer for our opponents after every game, win or lose. We offer a helping hand whenever we have the opportunity. In the words of President John F. Kennedy, “the rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened.”
Non nobis solum nati sumus. We are not born for ourselves alone. Our friends, neighbors, and country have a share in us, and we in them. When we remember “the other fellow,” we are not just living the Dudley way, we are living the American way. We channel the generations of farmers, lawyers, soldiers, entrepreneurs, immigrants, teachers, writers, musicians, and artists who brought the United States to its present glory.
Camp Dudley, you are the future of this nation. As for those among you from Spain, Italy, France, Canada, Colombia, and more, you are the future of your countries, too. As you grow and learn what it means to be a citizen, never forget the other fellow. It is your sovereign duty and responsibility to care for them. When you do, your contributions will resound from sea to shining sea. The United States and all of our homelands will thank us.
Please bow your heads.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp! ... Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
God Bless America.
Amen.

August 14, 2025 • Good morning Camp Dudley! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Travon Owens, camper #24226, and I’m proud to be the Leader of Huron Cabin. Today, I want to talk about taking “the risk.” None of us are here by accident. Every single one of us is here because someone in our lives took “the risk.”
Your parents took the biggest risk of all this summer. They sent you off to summer camp for three and a half weeks. Just think about it. Your family is trusting this place, and the people here, with your full wellbeing. They sent you hundreds, or even thousands, of miles away, hoping you’d make friends, try new things, and have the time of your life. That’s not a small decision, and to only have the ability to communicate with you through mail, that just adds to the cake. They took “the risk.”
Some of you have fathers, brothers, grandfathers, or friends who have been here before. I had a friend who told me about all of the great things, and the great people, here at Dudley. But, my story is a little different and maybe a little more extreme. Since I was five years old, I’ve been in foster care, living with the Coxs, who became my new parents. They have changed my life forever. My biological mom was deemed unfit to care for us, and there was no father figure in sight. The Coxs made a choice that not many people would even think about making, which was to take in four children that they didn’t bear, from ages starting at 8 months and ending at 8 years old. They took “the risk.”
They didn’t take us in because they had to, but because they wanted to. They had no guarantee of how it would turn out. All they knew was our story and that they wanted to save us. They risked their peace, happiness, and life to keep my siblings and me together, rather than letting us be separated by the system. They took “the risk.” Over the past eighteen years, my siblings and I have experienced things that may seem impossible because of Mississippi’s Department of Human Services. We’ve traveled the country with friends who became family, the Kellers. But, here’s the twist. Every time we traveled outside of Mississippi with them, we were breaking laws, and we knew it. DHS has strict boundaries for kids in the system, and it makes sense. Crossing them was risky, but very worth it. They took “the risk.”
Both sets of my parents believed we deserved to see the world, to live a life bigger than the limits placed on us. They knew the consequences, like a possible fine, imprisonment, or losing us to the system. They took “the risk.” On top of traveling outside of our legal boundaries every Christmas, spring, and summer break, I was introduced to Camp Dudley. Leaving the state was bad enough, but attending camp here was so far from legal and taking this risk was at an all time high and it would never be matched. I’ve been here at Camp for 7 years, and for 6 of those years, I was here illegally. My family put their life on the line. They took “the risk.” They gave me the opportunity to become a better person, meet new people, and to build life-long relationships and experience the best thing ever, Camp Dudley. This place is something that can’t be matched.
But, why would my family even think about taking that ultimate risk in the first place? Because, some risks are just worth taking. In their hearts they knew that life is about the risks we take and what we make of them. The greatest gift of my life was the risk that my parents took so that my siblings and I could experience it like we could have never imagined without them, and that is what I want you to carry with you for the rest of this summer. Taking risks doesn’t always mean breaking the rules. Sometimes it means trying something new, even when you are unsure of the outcome. These moments of courage can lead to the most meaningful growth and unforgettable experiences.
I challenge you to take “the risk.” It can be speaking up when it would be easier to stay quietly. Pushing yourself to take on a challenge you have never faced before. It might be talking to someone you’ve never spoken to before, in hopes of meeting your new best friend. Take the risk of trying a new activity you think you might not enjoy. Take the risk of giving this summer everything you’ve got and then share your experience, so someone else’s family can take the risk of sending their child here next year to have the time of their life.
We are all here because someone believed that “the risk” was worth taking. Let’s make sure we make it worth it.
Take the risk.

Since its inception, the Tiger Lily Award has recognized the person who best exemplifies creativity, commitment, and spirit in the performing arts at Camp Dudley. The award celebrates those who bring energy, imagination, and heart to the stage.
We had another amazing summer in Witherbee Hall with fun filled Wednesday Night Shows hosted by Pete McClearn, Ethan Carmody and Will Elliott, that featured musical performances, skits, slideshows and more. Our Saturday night plays were impressive and showcased the incredible talent we have at Camp.
This summer’s nominees reflect the remarkable range of dedication within the community, spanning comedy, drama, dance, and film.

Here are the 2025 nominees for the 2025 Tiger Lily Award: Grey Todd, for his standout performance as Dr. Poopypants in Captain Underpants, as well as for writing, directing, and editing Camp Dudley’s first-ever full-length feature film. A creative accomplishment that took lots of hard work and commitment from Grey and his cast.
Teddy Ughetta, for his spirited portrayal of the titular Captain Underpants, bringing humor, energy, and stage presence to the role.
Pete Burns, for his confident and compelling performance as the mayor in The Inspector General. At the same time, Garrett Wood and Jack Ryan, for their sharp comedic timing as Flo and Schmo (The Muscle) in the same production.
In The Point, Tucker Wells is recognized for his delightfully cool turn as the rock. Joey Maldonado, for his unforgettable and expressive dance performance. Wyatt Groves and Hudson White for their teamwork as the show’s hilarious duo, and Jayden Williams for his regal and commanding portrayal of The King
From the world of Wonka, Zane Sylvester, for his imaginative and energetic take on Willy Wonka, while The Ensemble of Oompa Loompas earned collective praise for their comedy, creativity, and choreography. Eva Mulloy, as Charlie’s mum and captivating everyone with her beautiful voice.
Amid such a strong field of performers, one camp-
er’s performance stood out for his emotional depth and sincerity. Not to mention the amount of lines this young camper managed to learn in just a few days, which was truly impressive. This year’s Tiger Lily Award goes to PARKER SYDOR for his moving portrayal of Charlie Bucket in Wonka. His performance captured the heart of the story — a blend of wonder, humility, and hope that resonated with everyone who had the privilege to watch his performance.
Congratulations to Parker and to all of this year’s nominees for their exceptional contributions to a truly memorable season of performances at Camp Dudley!
