Future bleak for track By Chris Gardner
One of Mt Pirongia’s most popular and challenging walking tracks is unlikely to reopen more than six months after a massive slip destroyed part of Bell Track during February’s Valentine’s Day storm. Restoring the 15.2km track, which links Kaniwhaniwha Cave with the 20-bunk Pāhautea Hut near Mt Pirongia’s summit, is considered impractical because of the scale of the damage. Department of Conservation Waikato operations manager Niwha Jones said the department was still assessing long-term options for the
mountain’s damaged track network. “The scale of the damage means reinstating Bell Track in its original form is impractical,” he said. The prospect of permanently losing the track has alarmed experienced trampers. “I would like to see all three tracks reopened,” Waikato Tramping Club vice-president Judith Bogle said. “I would like to see that we have some of these harder tracks available for people who want to do more advanced and challenging tracks rather than being restricted to tourist tracks.” Bell Track is not the only route affected.
A section of track alongside Blue Bill Stream between Kaniwhaniwha Cave and the giant kahikatea tree remains closed following further slumping and subsidence since the storm. However, DOC hopes the popular walk to the landmark tree can reopen once safety work is completed. “We’re in the process of rerouting a short section of the track between Kaniwhaniwha and Kahikatea Tree,” Jones said. The Mahaukura Track from Pirongia Forest Park Lodge to the summit and the Wharauroa Track from O’Shea Road to Wharauroa Lookout also remain closed while
safety assessments continue. Jones said significant slip damage had occurred alongside the Mahaukura Track, particularly near the ridgeline and helicopter pad. A temporary 20-metre reroute has been established to guide walkers away from the affected area. “The rerouted section follows the same ridgeline, so the visitor experience remains largely as it was,” he said. DOC staff are continuing to assess damage and consider longer-term management options for affected tracks and infrastructure. “At this stage, we are not providing reopening dates until
the relevant inspections and safety assessments have been completed.” Jones said the department’s focus was on reopening sections of the park where public safety could be assured through assessments, track work and signage. “We do acknowledge this work is taking some time, and we appreciate some visitors may not be able to use their favourite tracks on the maunga,” he said. Waipā District Council Pirongia and Kakepuku ward councillor Clare St Pierre said she was concerned the tracks were not being reopened in a timely manner and doubted Bell Track would ever reopen.
Small school with big hopes By Louis Johnston
Te Wharekura o Ngā Purapura o Te Aroha has sent five of its 16 intermediate students to the Aims Games in Tauranga this week to compete in the 3x3 basketball event. The full immersion Te Reo Māori school in Te Awamutu has just under 100 students, ranging from Year 1 to 15. Intermediate kaiako Terina Coker says she is thrilled the school could take a 3x3 team to the Zespri-sponsored games. “Honestly, it’s really amazing; I’m so proud of the team and our school. “This is the first year our school has ever been in this competition, and coming from a small town and a small school, it’s quite cool.” She says bringing a team to Tauranga for this competition has been a long-term goal for the school.
“I started planning this haerenga at the start of the year. “I knew last year that this was something I wanted to do for our kura, and the boys were really supportive; the whānau were really supportive so here we are.” She adds that with a girls’ 5-a-side team also taking part this year, her class of 16 is jam-packed full of athletes. Coker says Te Wharekura o Ngā Purapura o Te Aroha is a very special school, with a special group of players. “He kura Māori tatau. Ke ngā te whainga ke whaka aue te reo me ngā poteke mau te kura kē tēnei o ngā whakataitai. “So that’s probably what stands out most for us: we are a small school from a small town, and our only language is Te Reo Māori.” She says her students already did more

than enough in the first few games to make her proud. “They’re already doing so well; they have accomplished so much in just the first two games. “So seeing them take anything out, or even just getting the experience, is amazing.” Coker says two of the boys’ players are already in representative teams, but this competition will be the first time playing basketball for the other three. Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School took out the boys’ title with a 12-7 win in the final over Northcote intermediate. Other Te Awamutu schools competing were: Korakonui, Ngāhinapōuri School, Paterangi, Pirongia, St Patrick’s Catholic and Te Awamutu Intermediate. • Louis Johnston is a broadcasting student from Ara Institute of Canterbury.

Helen Clark returned to her roots at Pirongia Forest Park Lodge last month to honour the volunteers whose vision helped create one of the region’s best-known outdoor education facilities. The former Prime Minister and Te Pahū local cut the ribbon on a new sustainable campsite, memorial bench and memorial grove during a ceremony celebrating the lodge’s past while looking to its future. The new facilities were blessed by Rev Murray Olson before a gathering of past and present volunteers, staff and supporters, Te Awamutu Rotary members, Waipā District mayor Mike Pettit, Pirongia-Kakepuku ward councillor Clare St Pierre and Clark alongside her sisters Sandra and Jennifer. The event celebrated the people, history and future of Pirongia Forest Park Lodge. “There was a lot of time for people to reminisce,” Pirongia Forest Park Lodge manager and warden Kate Parr said. “We had lots of paper clippings, old photos and loads of pictures up on the wall. All the families mixed and merged. “Helen has been the lodge patron for many years. She also opened the lodge in 1984 as
the minister of conservation. She’s got a big connection to it.” Parr said the memorial grove contains trees for members who have passed away – past committee, wardens and volunteers – including Alan Livingston, Heather and Les Garrett, Vic Smart, Hilary and Morris McFall, Bruce Postill and Colin Hall. “They were all honoured and acknowledged,” Parr said. “Helen planted a kōwhai tree to add to the grove. Then we spent the rest of the time talking about those people that we’d lost and looking at the future.” Longtime lodge secretary and director Peter Robertson was acknowledged by Clark, presented with a long service certificate and a canvas print of the lodge. “We also acknowledged the ongoing efforts and support from John McFall, Morris’ younger brother. “He’s our go-to handyman around the lodge. He got presented with a long service certificate and the same painting by Helen.” Parr said it was nice to have Te Awamutu Rotary representatives there and several rotary members are on the lodge committee. “There’s a big connection between Rotary setting up the lodge many years ago to their

This week I want to talk about bail. This is the temporary release of a person charged with a crime, while they await court. When a person is first charged, they may be released on police bail, pending their first court appearance. Thereafter, Court bail conditions are applied. Bail may be opposed by police in circumstances where it is deemed necessary or is required under the Bail Act due to the nature or seriousness of the offence, a person’s previous custodial history and previous offending whilst on bail for other matters. Where a crime involves a victim, such as an assault, the victim’s views on bail are sought. Under the Bail Act 2000, the standard presumption in favour of granting bail does not apply to individuals who are charged with specific serious offences nor to repeat offenders who face specific serious property or violence charges with prior prison sentence history. Where bail is not granted, or sometimes where a suitable bail address cannot be identified, an offender will be remanded in custody until their next scheduled court appearance. Bail can apply to adults and young persons. When an adult is released on bail, conditions usually include a residential condition requiring the person to reside at a specified address. Depending on the nature and circumstance of the crime, other conditions

can include not to threaten or offer violence to people/ property, not to consume alcohol or illicit drugs, not to drive a motor vehicle, not to contact victims and witnesses, and not to go to/near locations. A curfew may also be imposed to restrict the person’s movement from their residential address, up to 24 hours per day. If an adult is granted bail but breaches the conditions on which they are released, they may be arrested and held in custody to appear at court at the next earliest opportunity. In the last seven days to writing, eight people were reported as breaching bail conditions in Te Awamutu. In Cambridge there was one reported breach of bail. Lastly today, a reminder to ring 111 when an incident is in progress. Doing so means that police resource can be despatched in a timely manner, when evidence is fresh and offenders are still in the area. Sometimes people ring an officer directly, post on social media about it or go through 105. In those scenarios, an officer may not be available, on another job, off duty or on leave. Social media does not alert police and can lead to misinformation. While 105 still ensures the matter is reported, where a unit is required ASAP, 111 is the best number to call.

We run adventure school camps for lots of Waikato schools and further afield. “There’s a real emphasis on connecting Waikato kids to their mountain.” Everyone enjoyed the day and Parr said many attendees would have shared similar stories. “They all lost their parents to the lodge for years while it was being built,” Parr said. “It was quite interesting, the kids that are in their 50s now saying they ‘remember coming up here and helping Dad plant trees’. “Seeing everyone reconnecting or connecting was really lovely.”

New leader
Waikato Waters has welcomed Sarah Sinclair as its new chief infrastructure officer. A Fellow of Engineering New Zealand, Sinclair brings extensive experience in infrastructure leadership, asset management and emergency management from roles in local and central government, including Fire and Emergency New Zealand.

Outdoor water restrictions are likely to continue across Waipā this summer despite efforts to increase treatment capacity. Waikato Waters says demand may still exceed available supply during peak periods and is urging residents and large commercial users to conserve water as dry weather approaches.

Disability funding falls short

A man with an impressive national and international career across both the education and disability sectors says New Zealand is failing to adequately meet the demands of its disabled communities. Andrew Short told the Ōtorohanga Friendship Club’s monthly meeting that the technology existed that could help disabled people lead lives where they could continue contributing to society, but that the funding was not. He was speaking on his role as commercial vicepresident (Pacific) for the global mobility support company, Permobil. Among those listening was his mum and dad, Ōtorohanga residents and club committee members, Catherine and Bob Short. He told the meeting that
one in four New Zealanders has a disability. While current funding has been decreasing by 12 per cent year-on-year over the last five years, the current need for complex rehabilitation equipment was increasing by 22 per cent over the same period. The sector had been consistently under-funded by successive governments, he said. “We innovate for the disability industry. We don’t see people with mobility challenges … we see people who can contribute to society if they are supported to do so. It’s our job to ensure that our government provides for these people.” Short, who joined Permobil in March 2021, also sits on the executive of medical technology associations in New Zealand. Part of his role sees him acting to influence decision makers to press for better outcomes

The age old saying of “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” was certainly adhered to at the Lemon Festival in Pirongia last month. All things zesty were on display at the Pirongia Community Centre as a fundraiser for Operation Christmas Hampers. The charitable community initiative identifies families in need and provides them with a box of food for Christmas, as well as a special gift for the children. Pirongia local Ruth Webb and Operation Christmas Hampers co-ordinator for Te Awamutu and surrounding areas Jill Taylor organised the event which raised around $200. “But the best part was we juiced 25 litres of lemon juice [thanks to attendees donating and squeezing lemons],” Webb said. “We will use the juice to make lemonade to sell at the annual Pirongia Craft Day, along with bacon and egg rolls which were a huge hit last year.” There were lemon treats, tips about using lemons for health, cooking, beauty and cleaning, as well as a lesson in making a quinoa, fennel, avocado and salmon salad courtesy of Mountain Folk Cafe Retreat owner Michelle Richardson.

In 2023, Permobil Comfort Zones were introduced at Auckland’s Eden Park to provide better access to events for those with disabilities, and the company is involved with Power in the Park events in Auckland. Permobil also linked up with Eden Park and the University of Auckland for an initiative called ‘Solve It!’, a week-long event where
over 100 students tackled daily challenges faced by disabled people, and pitched ideas to industry judges on how to make a city more inclusive. Short is a former educational specialist who has transformed systems in public and private education across four continents over more than 30 years. After leaving Waikato University, he taught for a while before moving into educational leadership and launching his international career.

He will stand as an electorate-only candidate and is not seeking a place on the Green Party list.

ON SHAKY GROUND
Quake ready pets By Janine Krippner
I write this on a Saturday morning, sipping a cappuccino in my favourite Wellington cafe. The question of the day is “did you feel it?” At 6:34 this morning, many were woken by a magnitude 4.9 earthquake at 26 km depth, 30 km NW of Paraparaumu. I was already up when the building started to shake. I looked at my cat, Harry, who looked concerned. Crouched down with big eyes, he had started to walk towards me, then froze in place. He recovered quickly then carried on with his morning. For his bravery I dedicate this week’s column to him and all our smaller family members out there. I have shared my progress with you as I’ve pieced together my own disaster preparedness kit. As a practical Kiwi with knowledge of hazards and impacts, I’ve found it a source of empowerment rather than stress. My real fear when it comes to a potential future earthquake is around any pets I may have at the time. Our sweet furry (or feathered or scaly) guys rely on us for survival and wellbeing. I’ve read many sad stories of losing beloved pets during disasters. A devastating earthquake would be nightmare enough, with the potential loss of power, water, and communications, and everyday life thrown into chaos on top of that. What do they need us to do? Firstly, I have plenty of food. If I am fortunate enough to never experience a lifeshattering jolt, none of this will go to waste. I have water supplies and also ways to
retrieve more water with collapsable containers and buckets. Having lived nearly 13 years as a very loved, healthy, and happy indoor cat, Harry has plenty of litter waiting for him, with plastic bags for disposal. His main needs are covered. I also have treats, catnip, and calming spray. I do need to finish a go-bag for him. I have a carrier and harness where I can easily get them. What I don’t yet have is a bag with food, water, collapsable bowls, and his vet papers. Thankfully he is not on any medication. I don’t yet have a printed photo in case he goes missing, but he is microchipped. I have not yet figured out how I would carry a go bag for me, his supplies, and him if I need to. He is not a small guy. My plan is a work in progress. Next, I need to know what signs of harm to look for and what to do about it. I have a pet first aid kit thanks to Vetora in Te Awamutu, and there are pet first aid books so we can have a handy guide in place if the internet is cut. I work from home, so it is unlikely that we would be separated. I have arranged with a friend a few blocks away that, if she is at work out of town, I will collect her wee pup until she returns home. Just like us, our animal dependents need supplies and a plan. No doubt a disaster would require a lot of figuring it out on the go, and we can take small steps before then to lessen the stress if the day comes.

The memory of Te Awamutu rugby stalwart Bruce Bain will again be celebrated when former and current Te Awamutu College First XV players clash on Saturday. The fifth annual Bruce Bain Memorial Shield match will be held at Te Awamutu College, where Bain left a lasting legacy as a player, coach and supporter of school rugby. Bain died in 2023, aged 64, after a courageous battle with cancer. His family donated the memorial shield to support the college’s Past versus Present First XV tradition at a school that played a significant role in his life. Organiser Ollie Ward said Bain was a much-respected figure in the local rugby community who played and coached at both Te Awamutu College and Te Awamutu Sports. Bain coached Ward at college and always made sure there was a bus for away trips, paying out of his own pocket. The four previous shield matches had been played at Albert Park. The past team are the reigning shield holders after beating the youngsters 37-22 in slippery conditions last year. Ward said they’d love to see as many past players, supporters, families and friends there as possible. It’s about keeping connected with their roots, maintaining a positive relationship with their former high school and mates. “Once again, we’ll see our Past first XV take on the Current first XV in what has become a fantastic tradition – bringing generations of players to celebrate our club’s history and support the next generation,” Ward said. “The more familiar faces on the sidelines,

Te Awamutu Walk of Famer John Blair Robert Hastie passed away peacefully on September 1 surrounded by his family. He was 93. The former New Zealand cricket umpire was inducted into the Walk of Fame in April last year – one of 35 and the first since 2022. Hastie attended the ceremony unveiling his pou in Selwyn Park alongside his family, friends and several former cricketing greats. Then Waipā mayor Susan O’Regan spoke at the event, describing Hastie as a humble achiever, an extraordinary umpire and an outstanding member of the Waipa community. “The Walk of Fame celebrates people who are not only world citizens but to us, are real-life Waipā heroes and role models.” Born and raised in Te Awamutu, Hastie’s love for cricket started in the late 1950s, playing in weekend competitions at Pirongia. His umpiring career launched in the 1960s and spanned nearly two decades, during which he officiated 48 first-class matches and 12 List A games, including officiating in tests against all of the major cricketing nations.
At the pou ceremony, Hastie reminisced on his first test match in Christchurch in 1974, when New Zealand scored its historic first win over Australia. “After that first game, it wasn’t until a few years later that things took off,” Hastie said. “I had some amazing years umpiring four one-day internationals and multiple test matches in New Zealand, when we faced off against England, Pakistan, the West Indies and India.” Storyteller Eatery & Bar said in a social media post they were incredibly sad to hear of the passing of their friend and long-time regular. “John could often be found perched around the leaner, Guinness in hand perhaps followed by a cheeky Jameson sharing a story. “We feel pretty privileged that over the years we got to be the ones to pour some of his favourite things, hear plenty of his stories, share plenty of laughs and provide a familiar place for him to pull up a stool.” Hastie was the much-loved husband of the late Ngaire. Loved father of Lee Anne and Gavin, Kathryn, and Richard and Esther. Much loved Poppa of Megan and Scott, Daniel, Kirsty, Aiden and Bob. Cherished Poppa John of Kelsey, Bodhi, and Maisie. Taha Kemara, 23, is poised to become Te Awamutu Sports’ next Chiefs representative. The Ōpōtiki born-andraised son of Maxie and Kelli Kemara will follow a line of Te Awamutu Sports Chiefs players – including current Chiefs head coach Jono Gibbes, Steven Bates, Sam Biddles, Ian Foster, Ben May, Muir, Bruce Reihana, Sitiveni Sivivatu and Nathan White. The Waikato, Māori All Blacks and former New Zealand Under-20 first five-eighth has signed a one-year contract with the franchise after being with the Crusaders from 2023-2026. It’s a chance to be closer to family. In 2021, Taha captained the Hamilton Boys’ High School first XV to their 14th Super 8 title before being named 2022 Te Awamutu Sports cocaptain straight out of school. Earlier this year he captained Waikato, confirming he is a leader to watch for the future and already a role model at a young age. Maxie said his son’s upbringing in Ōpōtiki and being close to his home, the coastal village of Ōmaiō, played a huge part in
shaping him as a grounded person. “Taha’s whānau are extremely proud and excited to see him play for the Chiefs in 2027,” Maxie said. Te Awamutu also holds a special place in Taha’s heart, his mum Kelli (nee Findlay) grew up there. Taha is a secondgeneration Sports player. Maxie represented Te Awamutu Sports from 2000-2002 and was Muir’s assistant coach in 2015
before taking over as head coach and appearing for the Bs a few times. Taha’s grandparents and aunties, uncles and cousins still live in Te Awamutu. Taha believes Kelli will be the loudest supporter in the stands when he runs out for his first home game at FMG Stadium Waikato. “I don’t even know if she’ll be cheering for the rugby. She’ll just be cheering for me to be home,” Taha said.
“She’s probably the one that’s the happiest about this decision.” He’s no stranger to the Chiefs environment, having previously represented the Under-18 side in 2020 and Under-20 in 2022, before becoming a key playmaker for the Christchurch-based franchise. Gibbes said Taha ticks all the boxes for the Chiefs environment. “With his quality, Super Rugby experience and

OWNERSHIP REVIEW OWNERSHIP REVIEW FINAL DECISION In accordance with the Trust Deed under which the Waipā Networks Trust was constituted, the Trustees of Waipā Networks Trust and the Directors of Waipā Networks Limited undertook a review of the future ownership of Waipā Networks Limited. As part of the review, the Trustees implemented the Public Consultative Procedure required under the Trust Deed. A copy of the Ownership Review was made available for public inspection from 1 May 2026, and interested persons were invited to make written submissions to the Trustees by 30 June 2026. No submissions were received. Following completion of the Ownership Review and consideration of all matters relevant to the review process, the Trustees resolved at a public meeting held on 28 August 2026 to adopt the following resolution: “That the Trustees pursuant to Clause 4.4 of the Trust Deed, the Trustees hereby resolve that they have decided to retain 100% of the shares in the Company. Future Ownership Reviews will take place in accordance with the terms of the Trust Deed. The Trustees will notify the Public as required by Clauses 4.5 and 13 of the Trust Deed.” This notice constitutes the public notification of the Trustees’ decision following the completion of the Ownership Review process. Invoicing and Payments
Effective from April 1, 2026, a $5.00 plus GST administration fee will be added to all Good Local Media Ltd invoices. For advertisers on a regular schedule, invoices will be sent at the end of the month and payment is due by the 20th of the following month, otherwise payment is required by end of day Tuesday in advance of publishing. Accounts in arrears +60 days may be subject to a $95 + GST late payment fee per month. Advertiser is responsible for all debt collection fees.
Rate Card
Rates are based on advertising space only and are over a 12-month period starting from the date the first ad publishes. Rate bracket e.g. 6 insertions, 12 insertions etc. chosen allows ad sizes to vary within the rate bracket. If the number of insertions chosen is not met then a bulk charge will be applied at the end/cancellation of your schedule based on correct rate reflective of the number of ads published e.g. if you have chosen the 12 insertion rate and only publish 6 insertions, the bulk charge will be the difference in price between the 6 insertion rate and 12 insertion rate multiplied by the number of ads published. You pay the rate reflective of the number of ads you published.

Trust Deed Amendments
Te Nehenehenui has completed Phase I and Phase II of the Trust Deed review process, as required by clause 31 of the Trust Deed. The Trustees will be asking members to vote on the following 4 special resolutions, approving changes to the Trust Deed: Special Resolution 1: The Trust Deed be amended for consistency with, or as a result of, the Trusts Act 2019, the Māori Fisheries Amendment Act 2024, the Maniapoto Claims Settlement Act 2022 and the Privacy Act 2020, being the Category 1 changes described in the Phase III Briefing Document and highlighted in yellow in the marked-up Trust Deed. Special Resolution 2: The Trust Deed be amended to remove obsolete provisions relating to the establishment period and the transition from the Maniapoto Māori Trust Board, being the Category 2 changes described in the Phase III Briefing Document and highlighted in blue in the marked-up Trust Deed. Special Resolution 3: The Trust Deed be amended for other general updates to make the Trust Deed easier to use and understand, and to make operating under it easier from a practical perspective (including correcting typos and errors), being the Category 3 changes described in the Phase III Briefing Document and highlighted in green in the marked-up Trust Deed. Special Resolution 4: The Trust Deed be amended for other changes arising from iwi member feedback received during the Trust Deed review process, being the Category 4 changes described in the Phase III Briefing Document and highlighted in grey in the marked-up Trust Deed. In approving any or all of special resolutions 1 to 4, members will also be confirming that the proposed changes to the Trust Deed are for the collective benefit of the members of Te Nehenehenui and will take effect on a date to be confirmed by the Trustees. Adding Te Awhitu Whānau Maria Marae as a registered marae The Trustees have approved a proposal to add Te Awhitu Whānau Maria Marae (6053 State Highway 4, RD 6, Taumarunui) as a registered marae to Te Nehenehenui, joining Te Whare ki Tuhua Hikurangi. The Trustees will be asking members to vote on the following special resolution: Special Resolution 5: Te Awhitu Whānau Maria Marae be added as a registered marae to Te Nehenehenui, joining Te Whare ki Tuhua Hikurangi, and the Sixth Schedule to the Trust Deed be amended to reflect this change, with effect on a date to be confirmed by the Trustees. Information sharing hui and explanatory documents A series of hui will be held in Aotearoa and Australia between 21 September and 10 October 2026. Hui dates and venues will be published on Te Nehenehenui social media pages and are available on the Te Nehenehenui website (https://tenehenehenui.iwi.nz/SGM2026/ ) Information about the Trust Deed Amendments (including a copy of the current Trust Deed with the proposed amendments marked-up as tracked changes and a Phase III Briefing Document summarising the proposed amendments) and the proposal from Te Awhitu Whānau Maria Marae will be available to review and download on the Te Nehenehenui website (https://tenehenehenui.iwi.nz/SGM2026/) and hard copies will be available at the tari (Matawhaiora, 49 Taupiri Street, Te Kūiti). Special Resolution Voting Process Voter packs will be posted to all adult registered members with current postal addresses from Friday 9 October 2026. Voting will open on Monday 19 October 2026. Votes may be cast by delivery to the Returning Officer in one of three ways: 1. By ballot box at the Special General Meeting; or 2. By posting a completed voting paper in the freepost envelope provided. Postal votes must be posted to the Returning Officer with the envelope postmarked on or before Saturday 14 November 2026 and received by the Returning Officer no later than Wednesday 17 November 2026. 3. Online at www.electionz.com/TNN2026SGM . Instructions to vote online will be listed on the voting paper or email. Online voting closes at 12 noon on Thursday 12 November 2026. LITSCHI, Karl John – Peacefully passed away at Waikato Hospital following a short illness on Monday, 31 August 2026, aged 86 years. Dearly loved and devoted husband of the late Febe. Much loved brother, brotherin-law, uncle and great-uncle. Karl missed his beloved Febe deeply, and there is comfort in knowing they are together once more. Together again, where you belong.
