Waipā District Council continues to face significant financial pressure with growth‑driven infrastructure demand, rising costs and higher debt remaining central to decision‑making. Its annual report for the year ended 30 June 2025 records an operating deficit of $17.3 million, a 14.8 per cent rates increase, total debt of more than $400 million and the write‑off of more than $26 million in infrastructure assets. While the figures relate to a completed reporting period, the underlying pressures - funding growth, managing ageing infrastructure and absorbing higher borrowing and compliance costs - continue to shape the council’s financial outlook. The reported deficit marks a sharp turnaround from the $20.2 million surplus budgeted at the start of the year. Council has attributed the result largely to non‑cash accounting items, including depreciation, asset revaluations and write‑offs, rather than a deterioration in day-to-day operating cash flows. It says services continued to be delivered and capital programmes progressed, but the accounting outcome reflects the increasing cost of holding and renewing assets. That explanation sits alongside one of the largest rates increases the district has seen in recent years, and one that remains high by national standards. Finance staff point to higher interest rates, construction inflation and the rising cost of maintaining core infrastructure as the primary drivers. For businesses and

households, the increase reinforces the connection between local government balance sheets and the cost of operating in a high‑growth district. A significant contributor to the deficit was the write‑off of more than $26 million in infrastructure assets. The adjustment reflects improved asset information, updated valuations and the retirement or replacement of assets that no longer provide service potential. The work was undertaken alongside preparations for the planned transfer of water, wastewater and stormwater assets to a multi‑council‑controlled organisation from July. Borrowing increased sharply during the year, rising from $326 million to $402 million. The increase is consistent with the council’s role as a Tier 1 growth authority, where infrastructure must be delivered ahead of development. Roads, water mains, treatment plants and stormwater systems are typically funded through debt well before development contributions are received. Waipā retained its AA‑ credit rating and secured tailored borrowing arrangements through the Local Government Funding Agency. Even so, debt levels exceeded planned targets and interest costs continue to grow as a share of operating expenditure, reinforcing the importance of careful capital sequencing and affordability. Leadership and organisational capacity also feature in the report. O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan’s salary for 10 months was $302,114 which does not include Kiwi Saver, vehicle or insurance payments. Executive remuneration totalled $2.85 million up from $1.739 million the previous year for its seven members. The council says the increase reflects market benchmarks and the responsibility of managing a $2.7 billion asset base. The 19 staff in key management positions were paid $2.796 million, up from $2.428 million the previous year. Overall employee costs were underspent due to vacancies, reflecting ongoing recruitment challenges. Property and investment activity added further movement to the balance sheet. About $4.5 million in property sales occurred during the year, alongside a revaluation loss of more than $750,000 across the council’s investment property portfolio. Taken together, the annual report illustrates the ongoing challenge for Waipā District Council of funding growth while managing rising costs, increasing debt and infrastructure renewal, including the transition of major assets. The figures underline that these pressures extend well beyond a single reporting period and continue to shape decisions around affordability, investment and long‑term resilience. The council’s Finance and Corporate Committee last met on December 10 and is scheduled to meet for the first time this year later this month where staff will provide a financial update for the current year.

A giant Meccano set has been delivered to the banks of the Mangati Stream. New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi delivered the new prefabricated Acrow steel bridge in pieces on Tuesday, nearly a month after the Valentine’s Day flood destroyed Mangati Bridge south of Pirongia. Workers made quick progress setting up the site for the singlelane temporary bridge for assembly and installation to begin. The new bridge is made of steel and bolted together in sections

and is stronger, wider, and longer than the Bailey bridges used after Cyclone Gabrielle. The state highway has been closed for a month and with traffic diverted traffic through Te Awamutu and Ōtorohanga, takings in Pirongia shops have dropped by more than 66 per cent in many cases. Downer Construction is on track to finish the installation of the Acrow bridge by the middle of the month. The bridge will have a 50-tonne maximum weight, and we’ll use traffic lights or sensors to control traffic across the bridge.

It was a quarter of an hour Denzel Stevens won’t forget. The 16-year-old Te Awamutu College student took part in the Junior Theatre Festival International All-Stars, training and performing in the United States last month. At the festival, groups perform 15-minute excerpts from Musical Theatre International broadway junior shows for a panel of adjudicators. Broadway junior shows are 30-minute versions designed to be performed by 13 to 18 year olds. Year 12 student Stevens was one of 31 students from nine countries selected for an international team which included two other New Zealanders - Ava Grace Fickling from Auckland and Jemima Riley-Duddin from Oamaru. The trio were the second contingent of New Zealanders to make the International All-Stars team to perform in Atlanta, and Denzel was the first male from New Zealand. “We all met in New York. We hadn’t met before. We had three and a half days to rehearse a 15-minute adjudication to perform at JTF Atlanta,” Stevens said. “On the first day, we had two hours of auditions to figure out who was getting all the leads and then who was ensemble. “We performed Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile: The Musical JR. We were the first people to perform the public viewing of the show that wasn’t a
pilot. “It was my first time doing any type of performance other than local theatres. It was a massive jump.” Drama teacher Morag Carter had sent Denzel the original All-Star information and recorded his audition. Denzel sang Mama Says from Footloose - a show he performed with the Te Awamutu Light Operatic Society accompanied by music teacher Barry Cullen on piano. “My recorded audition was right before the opening night of Footloose. A few weeks later, I was offered the position as an International All-Star,” Denzel said. “It was exciting, but also very busy. We had three and a half days, so we had about an hour to work on each song for vocals and then an hour for each dance. “It was fast paced, but it was so amazing to see such a big city as New York. “Then going to JTF Atlanta, seeing such a big community that are all interested in the same thing. It was good to get to know a large number of them. “ The group also attended workshops with the Broadway cast The Outsiders Musical. They learned “Grease Got a Hold” from the musical and Cameron Burke from the cast taught them the Broadway choreography as well. “We got to watch Hell’s Kitchen, Moulin Rouge and Operation Mincemeat on Broadway too.”

Cambridge has been experiencing a recent spate of construction burglaries and some developments are becoming repeat targets. Construction burglars across Waipā commonly target tradies’ tools left on site, joinery, fittings and fixtures in new builds. The opportunity arises where tools are left inside or when sites may be left insecure or with limited security measures. New developments often do not have a high occupancy rate or other nearby capable guardians to assist with deterrence and detection. I strongly encourage those working on construction sites to secure their tools, beyond a locked building. Storing tools in a locked unit or container with alarm and CCTV is preferable. Ensure you record the serial numbers for your power tools, photograph tools and engrave with an identifier to assist with identification if stolen. Denzel has been performing for three years. “I enjoy the community and working with people. I also really enjoy getting to be on stage and showing my talent,” he said. “When I was Year 9. I didn’t know what to do in high school and I saw that The Addams Family was on. I’d done a small show when I was little and thought it looked fun. “I auditioned, got the part as Fester and since then, it’s been part of my life.” Carter said Denzel has talent, works hard and looks for opportunities to develop. “He looks for ways that he can improve himself. When you get someone like Denzel, you want to find other opportunities to help them grow because he’s looking for those himself.”

He is remanded in custody pending his next hearing. Te Awamutu Police stopped two people driving with excess breath alcohol, one driving whilst disqualified. In another incident a male was arrested on family harm assault charges and has appeared in court. Prosecutions are only possible where people who have called 111 to report offending in progress are willing to then step up and make a statement to police about what has occurred to them or what they have witnessed. Policing is a combined effort and we appreciate the community support.

Body found
Skeletal remains found on the State Highway 3 roadside between Ōtorohanga and Te Awamutu have been linked to the March 2022 disappearance of 46-year-old Colin Heath. The body was discovered by a farmer and a group of weed controllers in an area of privet bush near the highway late last week.
Drug count
The Waikato Times, quoting figures obtained via the Official Information Act, says Te Awamutu has overtaken Cambridge as the “cocaine capital of Waikato”. The National Drug Intelligence Bureau data a comes from wastewater drug testing. The use of methamphetamine and cocaine rose in the period from July to September 2025, use of synthetic MDMA drugs like Ecstasy fell.
Man charged
Police have charged a man following the assault of two people in Marangi’s Marychurch Road. Hamilton City Area Commander Inspector Andrea McBeth said the 24-year-old is a patched Black Power member and has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Police announced last week they were looking for three people after residents were assaulted when they took exception to a car being driven to perform burnouts.
Land offers
Waipā District Council is working through offers on land off Maungatautari Rd it has subdivided from its Cambridge to Karāpiro cycleway. The council acquired 859 Maungatautari Road in 2021 for $5.32 million. Acting chief financial officer James Graham said, in a statement, the subdivided land was recently offered for sale through a standard listing agreement with a real estate agent.

Luke East – a familiar name to readers of The News - has become one of almost 100 new New Zealand citizens in Waipā. The Waikato University student from Te Awamutu – in his 19th year as a Waipā resident - has penned opinion pieces for The News, and has been a strong advocate for acknowledging British royal visits. He came to Waipā when his parents Allison and Gary emigrated from the United Kingdom. They became citizens in November. East, 27, joined new citizens from almost 20 countries at a citizenship ceremony last Friday at the Te Awamutu Presbyterian Centre. Waipā mayor Mike Pettit said welcoming new citizens is one of the most rewarding parts of his role. “Becoming a New Zealand citizen is more than filling out forms. It’s about choosing to be part of a community, joining in its life and sharing in its future,” Pettit said. “That’s a choice well worth celebrating.” There will be three more ceremonies this year and a similar number of candidates are scheduled to attend. The new Kiwis comes from the United Kingdom, South Africa, Qatar India, Germany, the Philippines, Fiji, Turkey, Egypt, Switzerland, Australia, Czech Republic, Sri Lanka, France and China. Most are from Cambridge, 20 live in Te Awamutu. East is a past Te Awamutu Primary, Pekapekarau School, Te Awamutu
Intermediate and Te Awamutu College student. “We came from Shropshire in the UK when I was eight years old. We came over for a better quality of life I think that’s what lots of these people here today have come for,” East said. “It’s a home away from home for many people. Te Awamutu councillor Shane Walsh wants more financial rigour from Cambridge Town Hall Community Trust. Walsh voted against receiving the trust’s statement of intent for 2026 and 2027 from trust general manager Simon Brew and chair Kirsty Johnson at the February meeting of Waipā District Council. The trust, established
in 2021 with a long-term lease from the council, is progressing its mandate to revitalise the hall. Walsh said he was disappointed in the financials presented in the statement of intent. “We give $600,000,” he said. “Part of that is to have the confidence that you can develop a financially sustainable model over time. Now, I don’t see any intent in the statement of intent of you heading in that
direction.” Under the agreement, the council provides both a renewal fund for capital asset maintenance and a capital works grant for improvement projects. Walsh said he expected to see projected annual income for the next 10 years and a profit and loss statement alongside a budget. He also asked what the trust was doing to reduce a $400,000 salary bill. Brew told Walsh the trust
had been cautious. “Because we don’t have in the long-term plan the numbers to do the master plan, we have pushed play on repairs and maintenance,” he said. Johnson backed Brew’s explanation. “If you tracked actuals to budget, you would see a good picture,” she said, “We haven’t made that the focus of this, but we’re very happy to share all those numbers with you.”

College pair’s top response
Jesse Wood meets two youngsters who say they took their social studies assessment a “bit far”. Last year, Te Awamutu College students Sasha O’Leary and Sophie Pendleton had an urge to help the first responders in their community. The 15-year-olds fundraised and donated to the Te Awamutu Volunteer Fire Brigade and St John Ambulance Te Awamutu. Now the pair are preparing something special for Te Awamutu police as they don’t accept donations. “We took our social studies assessment a bit far. We got inspired by it,” Sasha said. “We had to go out into the
community. We were given St John medics to do something for. We decided to expand to include the police department and fire station. “It was very nice meeting them all, they were all very friendly people.” Sasha and Sophie sold raffle tickets and organised a free first responders’ information evening at the Te Awamutu Library community room in December. “We sold raffle tickets for three hampers. Two were provided by Pak ‘n Save Te Awamutu and one was voluntarily donated by the three groups of first responders,”
Sophie said. The information evening was open to everyone, to celebrate and learn more about their local first responders. “The information they shared with us was very interesting. It was a cool experience all around,” Sasha said. Volunteers from all three organisations gave their time to the event. The girls particularly enjoyed St John’s CPR demonstration. “They were all very interactive with the kids. The CPR dummy demonstrations were fun to

watch,” Sophie said. “They told us what they do, how long they’ve been doing it and we could ask questions. ‘The adults quite enjoyed it as well - my parents definitely did.” After raising $344, in four days, the girls personally delivered the donations to the first responders crews. “As a volunteer organisation we rely on community support to fund those extra things over and above our standard equipment,” Te Awamutu’s deputy chief fire officer Karl Tutty said. “The timing of this donation is great, with our new response vehicle due to be unveiled in the near future it will go towards marking that occasion. “While the donation is
appreciated, the real thing that needs to be acknowledged is the efforts by these students to plan and host an evening supporting their local emergency services. Their efforts need to be commended.” “We didn’t have a goal in mind. We just wanted to raise money, awareness and give the first responders publicity for hat they actually do,” Sophie said. “We wanted to raise a solid amount that would actually help contribute. The ladies at St John’s were very impressed and appreciative. They said the donation would be very useful towards a new defibrillator.” Sasha and Sophie hope their actions inspire others. Every little bit helps to support the heroes who keep our communities safe.

Ōhaupō murders By Meghan Hawkes
On May 9, 1865, George Gibson, a private of the 65th Regiment, appeared to have deserted the Ōhaupō military post. He had been working for some German settlers but he did not turn up when expected. When nothing more was heard from him there was speculation about his sudden disappearance. It seemed doubtful he had deserted, as he had left his belongings behind and generally when a solider deserted the first thing he did was sell his kit. Although he had some five or six pounds on him when he left, he also left money behind. Around August 11 Private Edward Kirk, fishing for eels near Horseshoe Lake, thought he saw a sheepskin in the water. But it was the body of George who to all appearances had been killed and thrown into the lake. His skull was fractured as though by a tomahawk. A verdict of wilful murder against some person or persons unknown was returned at an inquest. William Jess, of the 3rd Waikato Militia, went missing sometime in July.

He was a German who had joined the 3rd Waikato regiment as a private in Brisbane in 1863. It was assumed that he had drowned trying to cross Walker’s Gully, where a narrow creek swelled up to a dangerous torrent in wet weather. On August 17 some German settlers came across his body in the tall titree at the edge of Morgan’s Lake, about two miles west of the Ōhaupō redoubt. He also had dreadful head injuries. At the time William disappeared he was known to have ten pounds in cash, two rings, and a silver watch on him but none of these were found. A verdict of wilful murder against some person or persons unknown was also returned at this inquest. In mid-August another German settler was murdered, his throat cut as he lay in his own bed, and the same verdict as the two other murders was reached at his inquest. The murders were thought to have been committed by Māori. After the Waikato war (1863-64), the district was very unsettled, with ongoing hostility. But it became apparent that two out of the three murders had
been committed in a way to make it seem it was the work of Māori. It was suspected that there was a concocted plan amongst some European settlers for entrapping solitary travellers or those living in isolated areas, the victims selected at a time when it was known they possessed money or valuables. There was a “screw loose somewhere” said the New Zealander newspaper as the Ōhaupō military post became notorious for ‘barbarous murders’. “We hope that justice may soon overtake those vile wretches,” said the NZ Herald of the person or persons unknown. In late September it was rumoured that a soldier of the 65th Regiment offered for sale at Cambridge a silver watch, belonging to William Jess. As suddenly as they started, the murders stopped. The victims were likely buried in the camp cemetery near Old St John’s church.

I hit a pretty big personal milestone last week. I paid off my student loan nearly 22 years to the week that it began to accumulate. I am incredibly grateful for that loan. In a world where education is expensive, it got me my bachelor’s and master’s degrees, my first two major steps towards becoming a volcanologist. Without a loan I simply could not have gone to university. The path to becoming a volcanologist is a long one. I was a young teen at Te Awamutu College when I discovered that a volcanologist was a thing. I will never forget sitting in geography class, being hit with the clear knowing that this was my life path. I had always loved volcanoes and now I had been shown a way I could dedicate my life to them. To be a volcanologist, earning a PhD is almost always a bare minimum. Thankfully nothing in my childhood taught me that I could not pursue lofty goals. My parents instilled an attitude of ‘you can do whatever you want, just work hard.’ As long as I am happy, they are happy. I know how fortunate I am to have this family background. I would spend 10 years in university. Five at the University of Waikato, then after a few years in Australia gaining valuable work and life experience, five more earning my PhD in the United States. I finished in late 2017.
I had assumed that I would then get a couple of postdoc positions (temporary post-PhD research positions), then find a permanent job. In reality, the job market was getting tougher and there was a major global event around the corner. After a year in a small town in West Virginia, I landed in Washington D.C. in disbelief that I was working in the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. Short-term contracts meant very little life stability, but along with working hard at science communication on top of my jobs, I was gaining valuable experience. Then 2020 hit. In the simplest and most understated summary: the pandemic hit, I burned out, I moved back home to Te Awamutu with my cats, and my life path was altered along with millions of others. Alongside navigating Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, I have achieved plenty of character-building throughout this journey. In the years after I moved home, I bounced around the country and landed in Wellington. Budget and job cuts in the last couple of years slashed my options, but I was fortunately headhunted for a remote role with a US company. This was thanks to all of that science communication work.
The flow of Kiwis across the Tasman Sea for work has become the subject of frequent media and political comment. The flow is at one of its highest levels and a significant proportion of those going are young and qualified. The phrase ‘brain drain’ is appearing in the media often. One political response is that this has happened before and the flow will slow down and possibly even reverse when the New Zealand economy starts to grow again. The first statement is correct – this has happened before. But I don’t think the second statement is correct this time. The differences between conditions for young people in Australia are now numerous, substantial and, without policy changes in New Zealand , are likely to be permanent. The first significant difference is salary levels. In dollar terms, salary levels are higher there than here. I know one young man from Cambridge who was earning $25 an hour here. He went to Australia last year and was immediately earning $40 Australian for the same job. Australian companies are advertising for our newly-qualified nurses and teachers and the starting salaries offered are substantially higher than here. Also, even though we are short of nurses and teachers here, many of these new graduates can’t get jobs here. These salary differences are now much more attractive because of a substantial decline in the exchange rate. Last July 2025 our dolloar was worth 92.7c Australian – it is now 83c - a change The Australian income tax system is also more favourable for people on low incomes.
New Zealand is one of the few countries that taxes income from the first dollar earned. In Australia, the first $18,200 of income is exempt from income tax. So current economic conditions for young people are much more favourable in Australia than here. But the biggest change that could make the lure to young Kiwis enduring is that future opportunities look better in Australia too. New Zealand’s per capita growth has stagnated at a pathetic 0.5% a year since 2008 – a period of nearly 20 years. One thing that has driven our periods of economic growth in the past has been strong prices overseas for our main export products. We are in a period of strong overseas prices right now – but this time our domestic economic growth has so far not responded in the usual way. Many young New Zealanders also believe they will have more chance to own their own house in Australia than here. This is one of the major negative consequences of the housing price boom in New Zealand a few years ago. Older Kiwis like me know that New Zealand is sliding rapidly down the global wealth ladder but it is still a nice, comfortable and safe place for us to live – and our earning days are largely over so we stay here. Young Kiwis see the same thing but are responding quite differently. Their earning days are just starting and Australia’s economic advantages have become too big for them to ignore.

Our Town Hall was the venue for a psychic ‘fair’ and as I walked by, a pleasant lady came over wanting to talk. Learning that she was taking a break from working her stall, I asked how her day was going. She was into a variety of spiritual practices but explained, “today, my readings aren’t going so well”… she talked about channelling, frequency and such things, whereby she sought information from beyond the physical world. Talking to her gently about her practices, I gathered her spiritual ‘gift’ was something she valued and took great significance from. For her, being ‘off form’ was unhinging. I laughed when she suggested that I carried a strong aura which is what some people believe is an energy or atmosphere that emanates from people. I explained being a Christian - not in a religious sense, but having a personal relationship with God through Jesus means His presence is always with me… something anyone can experience. She asked me if I thought her ‘gift’ was from God. I expressed my doubts, stemming from the fact that there are only two sources, and explained simple ways for discerning which source we’re tapping into . This lady attached great value to her ‘gift’ and took identity from what she did - so having a ‘bad’ day particularly rattled her. Everyone chooses certain things that they place value on. Things which we love and assign importance to will absorb our focus and attention. So, where we place value determines a lot about life’s outcomes for us. Being controlled by what we value is
possible. For that reason, we must take careful responsibility for what we attach value to, be it money, possessions, reputation, beliefs, career, achievement… anything in fact. I know someone who had lived much of their life with the misplaced value of ‘pleasing people’. Seeking the approval of others controlled everything this person did, causing them to miss the point that living purely for God’s approval is how we find peace, purpose and freedom. Jesus had issues with the religious crowd of His day. This bunch of so-called spiritual leaders called Pharisees were hooked on traditions, ticking off checklists in order to appear holy and devoted, looking good to others. But for all their outward piety, public prayers, and ostentatious ‘giving’ akin to the blaring fanfare of trumpets, it was all just show. Jesus nailed it when He commented that they had their reward inasmuch as, “They love the praise of men rather than the praise of God.” (John 12:43) We ultimately play to an audience of One. Think about that. God who sees our thoughts and the intents of our heart knows us better than we know ourselves. He understands the things that motivate us… how we put value on things we think will nurture and balm our insecurities and fears. It’s tragic to place value on purposeless things in life… let’s ensure we’re not ‘backing the wrong horse’ and putting our energies into futile pursuits.

Rural women rally for 100 By Jesse Wood
Rural Women New Zealand have been supporting and connecting women for a century. Firstly as WDFU (Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union), then WDFFNZ (Women’s Division Federated Farmers New Zealand) and now Rural Women New Zealand – but their goal has never changed. The Waipā-King Country Rural Women group will celebrate 100 years of their overarching organisation with a Te Awamutu luncheon this month. “I got my start in Rural Women through the homecare section 37 years ago. To celebrate a centenary of women helping women is an amazing achievement,” president Denise Powell said. Nationally there are about 1600 members and 270 of those belong to Waipā-King Country. “The national office do a great job responding and bringing to government attention, anything affecting rural families,” Powell said. “Although this area hasn’t quite met the full 100 years, our first branch started in 1929, we need to acknowledge our beginnings and celebrate nationally. “Most definitely the heart and soul of this organisation is women supporting women, although the bigger picture today is all about campaigning for fairness for
anything rural.” Rural Women NZ was formed in July 1925 when a number of farmers’ wives accompanied their husbands to Wellington to attend the Farmers’ Union Conference. They shared their hardships of living in isolation and with limited access to the services and opportunities commonly available in urban areas. This resulted in a group of 16 women founding the women’s division to improve support systems for their fellow rural women. In August 1946, the first meeting of Waipā branch delegates was held to form the Waipā provincial branch. “Our provincial celebrated its 75th - should have been 2021, but due to Covid it wasn›t held until 2022,” Powell said. In 1998 the provincials of North King Country (three branches) and Central King Country (two Branches) joined Waipā, to establish the present set up. When North and Central King Country provincials merged with Waipā in 1998, it created the biggest provincial group in the region – region six - with 29 branches. “Region six is now split in two - with our area being known as Greater Waikato and the bottom half is now Taranaki.” At the close of the century, the group marked the name change
from WDFF to Rural Women New Zealand by donating a sculpture to the park off Te Awamutu’s Albert Drive. Branches still active in 2000 were Arohena, Crossroads, Kāwhia, Korakonui, Mangapiko, Oparure, Otewa, Pāterangi, Pōkuru, Pukeatua, Taumarunui, Te Rahu, Te Rore, Waitangaru and Wharepapa South. Now there are only six – Arohena, Crossroads, Pōkuru, Te Rahu, Waitangaru and Districts and Wharepapa South. “With transport as it is today, more and more women are working off the farm and therefore not available to attend monthly branch meetings, especially if they are held during the day, hence declining membership,” Powell said. “There is not the same need in rural areas for women supporting women as there was 50 plus years ago.” Te Rahu is one of the strongest branches with 20 members and monthly meetings still held. They have the oldest living rural women’s group member, Tui Trow, who turns 100 on April 5; the longest serving member Olwyn Verhoef - 79 years membership and the longest serving provincial treasurer - Raewyn Marwood since 1999. Denise Powell was the first paid homecare co-ordinator 37 years ago and the branch has two mother-daughter members.

“We still hold traditional monthly meetings, except for January and have the regular competitions - such as best bloom, best cluster, best shrub, best fruit, best vegetable, floral art, cooking and handcraft,” Powell said. She is looking forward to celebrating an organisation that has given them so much joy. As their motto says, “service simply given”. “Our event could be described as low key, simply because we are keeping in mind the aging membership. The day’s programme includes cutting of the cake and half hour entertainment by the Rivertones, lucky number

Lake Arapuni Fishing Competition 21 & 22 March 2026 Fish & Game needs your help The annual Lake Arapuni Fishing Competition will take place at popular Waikato trout fishing Lake Arapuni on 21 and 22 March. If you haven’t fished Lake Arapuni, you are missing out. The fish are big and there are far fewer anglers than Rotorua. The Lake Arapuni Fishing Competition is a great opportunity to learn how to fish the lake from the local experts. The competition has free camping at Bulmers Landing with a great family-friendly atmosphere. Te Awamutu Fish & Game Association will host the event and Auckland Waikato Fish & Game are asking for your help to collect some important fish data. Sterile fish were first released in Lake Arapuni during 2020 in the hope that they would grow to trophy size like they do in some North American lakes. If the sterile rainbow trout are going to live longer or grow bigger than normal rainbows, it should be detectable this summer, but staff need your help to collect the data. All the fish released into the lake are tagged or marked so Fish & Game staff need your help to recapture them. Every tagged fish caught is important so Auckland Waikato Fish & Game will give a $100 voucher to one of the anglers who weighs in a tagged fish at the competition. The contest will have junior and adults’ sections starting from 6am on Saturday 21 March, closing (weigh in) at 2pm on Sunday 22 March with the prize giving at 2.30pm. There will be a sausage sizzle, spot prizes,
and a lucky ticket draw. To enter the competition, you can purchase tickets at Bulmers Landing from 6pm on 20 March. Entries close at 11am on Sunday. Lane Madsen vowed last year that he would return to the Waipā Fun Run to complete a trifecta - but illness nearly derailed the plan. The 26‑year‑old had sworn after winning his second title in Cambridge that he
would be back for a third in Sunday’s running of the event. That was the plan, until he became “really sick” during the week and decided not to enter. On Sunday morning, however, he woke up feeling better, looked out the window and thought: “Surely I can win in
conditions like this.” He not only won – he also blitzed the field, running the 10km in 32 minutes, two seconds, more than a minute faster than his winning time last year. Madsen also claimed family bragging rights, beating younger brother Josh, 24, by exactly two minutes. Jake Wilkinson was third in 34m12s. Tauwhare’s Michelle Walen won the women’s 10km race
for the second time in 38m52s Mat Langlands, of Pukemoremore, and Hamilton’s Rowan Torckler (née Baird) took out the five‑kilometre titles. For Torckler, it was a case of rolling back the years. which was first held in 2012. Cooler early‑morning temperatures during the 10km and 5km races provided ideal conditions for runners and walkers. Cambridge’s Devon Rogers completed the five kilometres in 29m51 using a running blade prosthetic. His running foot was taped up for the event. Rogers had his left leg amputated above the knee following a motor accident in 2010. He has gone on to compete in a number of sports, most notably paracycling. It was the opportunity to further his Paralympic cycling chances that brought him to Cambridge from Auckland. He now owns and operates Harrison Flooring with his wife, Katherine. “I’ve always been really positive,” he said of the challenges he has faced since the accident. He has a supportive prosthetic manufacturer who likes nothing more than seeing him arrive with a broken prosthetic - a sign he has been physically active. marked his first as an 80‑year‑old. “I wondered where all the fitness has gone,” he told The News after completing the course in what he described as a “shuffling” one hour, 24 minutes and six seconds. “Someone was scoffing with me because they say they can always hear me coming,” the former Cambridge resident said. There was a standing ovation for the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Brigade members who ran in full fire-fighting gear. The event ran smoothly under the stewardship of Donna Warwick. The St Peter’s Catholic School event coordinator has been involved since the inaugural run 14 years ago, when it was established to align with the school’s “healthy mind, healthy body” philosophy, and continues to play a central role as co‑ordinator. Only one edition has been cancelled - in 2022 during the dregs of the Covid‑19 pandemic. In 2014 it was postponed after a cyclone hit. Two years ago, heavy rain marred the day, and though 691 competitors registered only 558 finished. Waipa hosts lacrosse nationals
Te Awamutu will take centre stage in New Zealand lacrosse when the senior nationals tournament arrives at Te Awamutu Sports this weekend. Waipā athletes will be right in the thick. The tournament brings together the country’s best regional programmes. Waipā’s will have a strong contingent of Te Awamutu and surrounding area athletes involved. On the women’s side, Holly Harris, Ashley Karl, Alice Wheatley-Wilson (Ōhaupō), and Taumarunui’s Brooke Bolstad have all earned Blax titles through New Zealand women’s campaigns over the years. That Bolstad makes the journey from Taumarunui to commit to Te Awamutu Sports speaks volumes about the club’s growing reputation as a home for serious lacrosse athletes. They are joined in the Waikato Women’s Development Team by Eva Walton and Tash Featherstone. The men’s representation is equally impressive. Sam Denize, Elijah Lee, Ashton Perrett, Nathan Honeyfield, Nye Linton, Floyd Owen, Xavier Cox, Ethan Joblin and Michael Smith all feature in the Waikato men’s setup.
They are joined by Pirongia pair Ben Cowen and Mark Seager. Harley Stevens adds further regional flavour, having earned selection with the Wellington team. Quade Raroa has a defensive role with the Auckland men’s team. The New Zealand men’s programme recently secured their place at the next World Championship after a successful qualifier in Wellington, while the women’s programme has its sights set on the Division Two World Championship in Wrocław, Poland in July. Te Awamutu Intermediate and Te Awamutu College have both played a role in developing the player base now feeding into regional competition. A primary lacrosse initiative has launched for Year 4-6 students and sessions run on Wednesday evenings at Te Awamutu Sports. Te Awamutu College players are volunteering their time to coach and mentor the next generation. Visitors to the nationals weekend will also get a taste of international competition, with Burnside Lacrosse Club making the trip from Adelaide to compete in the women’s tournament.

The last day of the Nuku Walk starts with a difficult choice. Either climb 240 metres from the beach to Mangangū Pā to get extensive views of the three-day 30km tramp or follow an easy path along the flat to the farm hut at the start of the walk. Sheep and beef farmer Hamish Nelson, who operates the walk with his wife Bridget St George, visited our group of nine trampers at the end of the second day as we enjoyed DIY pizzas having completed more than 26km of the 30km-ish walk. Over dinner seven of nine of us decided to take the easy route back to the car park on the last day,
while my wife Liz and I opted to rise early to beat the tide at the station’s Front Bay and climb the cliffside staircase to the clifftops and further up to Mangangū Pā. A combination of the early start and knowing they had to ascend the staircase they had descended the previous day were factors that put the rest of the group off. Liz and I woke at 6am and enjoyed a quiet breakfast and coffee and hit the beach as the sun rose shortly before 7am. Foam rolled in off the sea as the wind blew. Liz and I walked north back along the beach to the staircase once used to transport stock from the paddock to paddle steamers and on to the

stockyards or meat works. Up we went – the climb seeming easier than the descent the day before. Within half an hour our accommodation was a dot on the landscape to our south. Within an hour we had reached the pā. It was easy to see why Māori had chosen this highly defendable site, with views for miles across land and sea. As we looked down on creation, we felt blessed to be alive. It afforded us extensive views of nearly the whole walk including the extinct volcanic Mount Whareorino that we had skirted on our first day before descending through bush, and the 100 metre Nuku Dune we had scaled on the second day as we walked from Back Bay to Front Bay. We spent our last hour descending farm tracks from the pā to the farm hut where we had parked, and arrived at 9am. It had taken us two hours to walk nearly 6km and we had beaten the rest of our group back. They arrived half an hour later, when we said our goodbyes, The Nuku Walk is one of the most delightful tramps I have done, mostly because of its diverse landscape being walked by only a small group. I’m used to multi day expeditions carrying my

accommodation, sleep system, and food on my back, so joining a catered walk where the bulk of your gear is transported from camp to camp with my wife was a real treat. “Of all the walks we have been on in New Zealand it was easily the best in terms of terrain, scenery, accommodation, catering and organisation,” said one of the Nuku Nine, Elaine Coker, “In short it had everything you could
possibly want for a wonderful experience.” Darry Boroughs, one of five Upper North Island women enjoying the walk for what they called Galentines weekend, said she had one word for the walk: incredible. “From start to finish, I loved every minute of this intrepid three-day hike,” she said. The Nuku Walk will stay with us all long after we have washed the sand off our boots.

Former Te Awamutu College head student Tyra Todd has brought a slice of London back to her hometown She has established ‘These Girls Run’ – which aims to create a safe and supportive place for women to run and meet likeminded people. “I joined These Girls Run in London in April 2024 after moving across the world,” Todd told The News. “This was after a less than great experience with another run club that left me behind and completely lost in Hyde Park. I made a friend at that first run club, the only good thing to come out of the day, who convinced me to come along to a TGR run. “TGR was the polar opposite and the girls made me feel super welcomed. The supportive environment really got me coming back week after week. A year later I then became an ambassador for TGR London.” These Girls Run was founded by Molly Slater-Davison in York at the end of 202 and started as a casual Sunday run club. “Running alone didn’t always feel safe and Molly wanted to create a wellness space that actually felt supportive,” Todd said. “TGR is not about being the fastest or fittest, it’s about showing up and having a chat with the girls while also getting a run in.” The first meeting of These Girls Run in Te Awamutu drew 22 people and it will meet on the first Saturday of every month. “Only criteria for the club is to bring a positive attitude and give it your best go. You don’t have to be a professional runner to come along. We do not have a set pace and will run at the pace that works best for the group.

Edgecombe nets new role

From a little girl asking for players’ signatures to being named 2026 cocaptain, Georgie Edgecombe’s Magic devotion has come a long way. The Cambridge-based 24-year-old will co-captain the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic netball side with the experienced Erena Mikaere, following the departure of Ameliaranne Ekenasio. Edgecombe started playing netball at a young age and remembers watching the Magic play at Mystery Creek Events Centre. “I grew up in Hamilton but I went to St Peter’s (School) from Year 9. Then I moved to Cambridge in 2017 or 2018. I love it here,” the former head student said. “Being from the region, I’ve grown up watching the team and supporting Magic since I was at school. “It’s definitely an honour to look back and think, I was one of those little girls sitting in the crowd or asking for signatures - now I can put the dress on each week and go out and play. “Netball is a pretty cool job. I don’t take it for granted, that this is what we get to do each day. It’s special.” This is Edgecombe’s sixth fully contracted season, following two years as a training partner after school. The captaincy adds another line to her Magic CV, following the 2025 awards night where she received Players’ Player, Members’ Player and
the Laura Langman Medal. She’s excited for the new opportunity and knowing she has her teammates backing makes it even more enticing. “We did it differently this year with captaincy nominations coming from the team, the management and staff,” Edgecombe said. “When our coach MJ (MaryJane Araroa) asked if I would lead alongside Erena, I was surprised. “I was a little unsure at first but with reassurance from the team and MJ, I was privileged and honoured to say yes. “It’s definitely a new group from previous years. It’s been cool getting to know them over the past month or so leading into that. Infused inspirations
It takes years for a professional coffee tester to develop a perfect palate. However, you can quickly compare coffees yourself to find the one you enjoy by ‘cupping’. It is similar to wine tasting. You need to slurp to fully aerate the liquid, swirl it in your mouth and spit it out so you don’t overload your palate with too many flavours. Select two ground coffees you want to taste. Boil fresh cold water. Put two teaspoons of one of the coffees in a heatproof cup. Top with hot but not boiling water. Steep for three minutes. Break the grounds on the top and smell the coffee. Spoon away any remaining grounds from the surface. Take a dessertspoon of the coffee and slurp it in your mouth. How does it feel in your mouth? Spit it out. What flavours are left in your mouth? Repeat with the second coffee. Which one did you prefer? Tea has been appreciated since the fourth century BC. In China, some teas are used as the cooking liquid for noodles. It also makes a great marinade; dried leaves can be used as a base for smoking fish, meat, vegetables, or cheese; combined with spices, it makes a tasty meat rub for barbecues; and in baking and desserts, it adds a subtle flavour. COFFEE LOG Toast the walnuts on a tray in the oven while it preheats — for about 5 minutes. You could use a shallow roasting pan of similar dimensions to the Swiss roll pan to cook the log. This large log freezes well either in a whole piece or in slices. Log: 6 medium eggs, at room temperature 3/4 cup caster sugar 1 tablespoon instant coffee granules 2 tablespoons boiling water 1 1/4 cups self-raising flour 50g butter, melted Filling: 1 teaspoon instant coffee granules 1 tablespoon boiling water 250g mascarpone 4 tablespoons icing sugar 150ml cream

75g walnuts, toasted and chopped Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a 26cm by 39cm Swiss roll pan with non-stick baking paper. Log: Whisk the eggs and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Dissolve the coffee in the boiling water. Cool. Fold the flour into the egg mixture until evenly mixed. Gradually fold in the coffee and melted butter. Spoon into the prepared pan and level the surface. Bake for about 12 -15 minutes until the cake, when tested with a thin skewer comes out clean. Cool a little, then turn out onto a sheet of baking paper dusted with icing sugar. Roll up from a long edge with the baking paper in between. Cool. Filling: Dissolve the coffee in the boiling water. Cool. Mix into the mascarpone with the icing sugar. Fold in the whipped cream. When the sponge is cool, unroll it carefully and spread evenly with the mascarpone. Sprinkle with the walnuts. Roll up like a Swiss roll again. Cover and refrigerate for 8-24 hours. To serve, sprinkle with icing sugar and slice. Great served with extra whipped cream or yoghurt. Serves 14.
1/2 cup strong lemon & ginger tea, cooled 3 tablespoons orange liqueur, optional 2 cups lemon yoghurt 6 rounded teaspoons mascarpone 1/2 cup glacé mixed peel Cut the sponge into small fingers or squares. Pack half into six teacups. Sprinkle with half the cold tea and liqueur, if using. Spoon half the yoghurt on top, add more sponge, sprinkle with the tea and top with more yoghurt. Cover and refrigerate for up to 2 days for the flavours to develop. Top with a teaspoon of mascarpone and some mixed peel just before serving. Serves 6.
LEMON TART ‘TEA-RAMISU’ Serve in teacups or glasses. I used 4 lemon and ginger tea bags to make the tea. 200g trifle sponge
COFFEE FIZZ Make strong coffee using your coffee machine. Or, if making it with a plunger, use twice the amount of coffee grounds you would normally use for a cup of coffee. A great alternative to Coke. 3/4 cup very strong cold coffee 2 teaspoons maple syrup or to taste 6 ice cubes chilled sparkling water or soda water to taste Divide the coffee between 2 medium glasses. Stir in the maple syrup. Add the ice cubes and top with the sparkling water. Serves 2.

As part of the Te Awa team, you will have: • An enjoyment of gardening, general knowledge and experience in various maintenance roles and helping people keep their homes in tip top condition. • A passion for great customer service and respect for our resident’s personal space and village grounds. • Have excellent communication skills, common sense and a solution focussed approach. This role also has an element of minor building, and clinical equipment repairs, planned, preventive maintenance and audit compliances.
You might be the person our team is looking for. Whilst care giving experience is preferable, full training will be offered to the right applicant.
