Disability funds fall short A man with an impressive national and international career across both the education and disability sectors says New Zealand is failing to adequately meet the demands of its disabled communities. Andrew Short told the Ōtorohanga Friendship Club’s monthly meeting that the technology existed today that could help disabled people lead fulfilling lives where they could continue contributing to society, but that the funding was not. He was speaking primarily on his role as commercial vicepresident (Pacific) for the global mobility support company, Permobil. Among those listening were his parents, Ōtorohanga residents and club committee members, Catherine and Bob Short. He told the packed St David’s Presbyterian Church hall that one in four New Zealanders has a disability and that while current funding has been decreasing by 12 per cent year-on-year over the last five years, the current need for complex rehabilitation equipment was increasing by 22 per cent year-on-year over the same period. He said the disability sector had been consistently under-funded by successive governments, and part of his role was to advocate for the sector. “We innovate for the disability industry. We don’t see people with mobility challenges … we see people who can contribute to society if they are adequately

supported to do so,” he said. “It is our job to ensure that our government provides for these people. Not all halls of power understand that.” Short, who joined Permobil in March 2021 as country manager to grow the New Zealand business and support the company’s aspirations across Asia and the Pacific, also sits on the executive of medical technology associations and other relevant groups in New Zealand. Part of his advocacy role sees him acting to influence decision makers and regulators to press for better outcomes for the country’s disabled communities. The company was founded in 1967 by Dr Per Uddén, a Swedish inventor and entrepreneur who was inspired by his work as doctor to find solutions for those with mobility problems. Keeping the needs of the individual at the forefront of its operation, the company centres its work on clinical evidence, research and innovation. Short has formed strategic partnerships with other organisations and fostered stakeholder relationships to deliver better options for disabled communities across his area, which covers Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. In 2023, Permobil Comfort Zones were introduced at Auckland’s Eden Park to provide better access to events for those with disabilities and their families, and the company is deeply involved with Power in the Park events in Auckland.

Permobil also linked up with Eden Park and the University of Auckland for an initiative called ‘Solve It!’, a week-long event where over 100 students tackle daily challenges faced by disabled people, and pitch ideas to industry judges on how to make a city more inclusive. Short is a former educational specialist who has transformed systems in public and private education across four continents over more than 30 years. After leaving Waikato University, he began teaching before moving into educational leadership. His work took him abroad, delivering business plans to operate private schools and build other schools in numerous different countries. The Ōtorohanga Friendship Club, formerly a Probus Club, has over 90 members from around the region, most of whom attend the monthly meetings.

Talent on show

Candidate announced

Te Kūiti will become a showcase of local creativity later this month when the Waitomo Society of Arts brings together artists and craftspeople for its bi-annual exhibition. The exhibition will run at the Les Munro Centre, giving the community an opportunity to see the work of local artists and discover the range of creative groups active in the Waitomo district. Waitomo Society of Arts (WSA) chairperson Sibyl Iremonger said the exhibition, which has run since the mid1960s, was always a special occasion for the society, bringing together its many different creative interests under one roof. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to share the work our members have been creating and to show our community just how much talent and creativity we have right here in the Waitomo district,” she said. The society’s groups include needlecraft, painting, creative fibre, pottery, bookmaking, scrapbooking and patchwork, with members showcasing the work they have produced throughout the year. This year’s exhibition features close to 30 member exhibitors as well as guest exhibitors specialising in watercolour, photography and quilting, displays of animal skeletons and artwork from young local artists. Visitors will have the chance to see creativity in action, with live demonstrations throughout the exhibition including tufting,

knitting and spinning. A special focus this year is the ‘Recycle, Repair, Reuse’ section, encouraging members to transform old or discarded materials into something new. Iremonger said she was looking forward to seeing how members brought the recycling concept to life. “Our ‘Recycle, Repair, Reuse’ theme has added another exciting element this year, and I’m looking forward to seeing the imaginative ways our members have embraced it,” Iremonger said. Iremonger acknowledged the effort of volunteers to help an event like this get off the ground, thanking those who had contributed to making the exhibition possible.

Crime crashes and rescues King Country Police have had another active week responding to a number of incidents across the district, with several positive outcomes achieved through the assistance of community members. Staff responded to reports of an elderly man who had gone missing during the day in the Waitomo area. A search was launched with the assistance of farm workers and members of the public who helped cover extensive areas of surrounding farmland. Thankfully, the man was located safe and well after being taken in by a member of the public and was reunited with his family. Police would like to thank everyone who assisted in the search effort and helped bring about a positive outcome. Following the execution of search warrants at properties north of Hamilton, two men have been charged in relation to a burglary that occurred in Ōtorohanga last month, (targeting a number of dirt bikes) . During

the searches, police also located a firearm, drugs and drug-related utensils. Enquiries into those matters remain ongoing. Police located and arrested a 43-yearold man following a reported shoplifting incident in Te Kūiti. During the night on Saturday, police responded to a crash on Te Kumi Road in Te Kūiti, where a stolen ute had left the road and came to a stop after crashing into a tree. Staff quickly located two males walking away from the scene. A 16-year-old was taken into custody without incident. A 20-year-old male attempted to evade arrest by running through nearby properties and jumping fences before being apprehended further down the road. The man was transported to hospital by ambulance to receive treatment for injuries sustained in the crash. He has been summoned to appear in court on charges of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and

escaping custody, with further charges currently under review. A Youth Aid referral is also being prepared in relation to the youth offender. Following an incident in Te Kūiti, police arrested a 27-year-old man for breaching his court-imposed curfew. The man is also facing additional charges of wilful damage and trespass. Police were called after a two-year-old child had wandered away from a property in Te Kūiti . Fortunately, a member of the public found the child and contacted police. The child was safely reunited with concerned family members who had been out searching. As always, we would like to thank you for the ongoing support and assistance. Work is set to begin this month on restoring two-lane access through SH3 Awakino Gorge, with four new drainage culverts now installed. NZTA will build a retaining wall and realign part of the road away from the main slip site. The second lane is expected to reopen by mid-December, while broader resilience upgrades continue.

Water boost

Te Kūiti’s water supply resilience project has reached a major milestone with the completion of a roof on a new 2.8 million-litre reservoir. The $10 million upgrade will significantly improve water security, increase storage capacity and reduce outage risks. Most pipeline work is complete, with the project expected to be operational before Christmas.

Boards face uncertainty By Chris Gardner

Fears Kāwhia could lose a voice in local government have sparked calls for a public meeting on the proposed amalgamation of Ōtorohanga and Waitomo district councils. Concerns centre on the future of community boards under the proposed arrangement. The two councils’ Head Start submission to the government said their future would be considered as part of a representation review alongside alternative options for local representation. The News understands one option being considered is replacing the two existing community boards and councillors with a single elected representative covering the 135km stretch of coast

from Aotea Harbour in the north to Mokau in the south. At last week’s Kāwhia/Aotea Community Board meeting, Ōtorohanga district councillor and board member Kit Jeffries asked when a public meeting would be held to discuss the proposal. Ōtorohanga District Council regulatory and growth group manager Tony Quickfall said the board would receive an update once the government had responded to the councils’ proposal. The proposed amalgamation is part of the government’s Head Start programme, which requires councils to identify preferred partners for future reorganisation. Unlike Ōtorohanga, which has community boards in Ōtorohanga and Kāwhia/Aotea, Waitomo

District Council has no community boards. Board member Richard Harpur first raised the prospect of a public meeting at the board’s August meeting. He said he was working to align the council’s budget with a list of council-owned assets in Kāwhia so residents could better understand what return the community received from them. “It’s a work in progress, and we have maybe two years to clarify what we own and what returns we get,” Harpur said. “It would be a pity if Kāwhia assets fell through the cracks during the Head Start programme.” Harpur said it was a “serious misstep” not to include community board chairs in the initial

discussions. He said community boards may have been overlooked because Waitomo District Council does not have any. Jeffries said he shared Harpur’s concerns about the limited involvement of community boards in the process. “I can assure you that, wherever possible, I have tried to push for the community boards to be involved,” Jeffries said. “I hope, going forward, that better recognition is given to the boards and the input they can offer.” Board chair Geoff Good said he was also concerned about the potential loss of local representation. “While I appreciate there’s still a long way to go ... we might be on limited time,” Good said.

The start of something new was celebrated on Saturday as local Malayali families officially launched their own community group alongside traditional Onam celebrations. The inaugural event brought together Malayali families, most of whom immigrated to northern King Country in the last decade, to celebrate their shared heritage at the Gallagher Recreation Centre in Te Kūiti. Malayalis are people from Kerala, an Indian state on the southwestern coast of India who share the Malayalam language and a rich cultural heritage. Part of the get-together included the celebration of Kerala’s major Hindu and harvest festival of Onam, where people from Kerala come together to celebrate family, community, gratitude and togetherness. Onam’s origins trace back to a story in Hindu mythology, which commemorates the annual return of the much-loved king Mahabali to Kerala, who was banished to the netherworld by Vamana. The celebrations included the official inauguration of the community, a ceremonial lamp lighting and the unveiling of its

new logo, followed by addresses from Waitomo mayor John Robertson and deputy mayor Eady Manawaiti. Robertson said he was honoured to be invited and share in the celebrations of the Malayali community “who are just loving being in Te Kūiti”. “It really impressed me to see a group who have come together as a community within the Te Kūiti community and they are thriving, just really enjoying being part of Te Kūiti and wanting to contribute,” Robertson said. “People dressed up in their best of clothes, proudly displaying the culture that they came from. It was

really quite amazing and moving to see it,” he said. The group of close to 40 people were also treated to a selection of traditional Kerala cultural performances before sharing an Onam Sadhya, a traditional vegetarian feast. While the group is still finding its feet, member Richard Veettiyankal Jose said the group hopes to grow and become increasingly involved in the wider community. “Although we are still a relatively small and newly-established group, we hope the Te Kūiti Malayali community will continue to grow and become actively involved in local events, community initiatives,

volunteering and cultural exchange within Te Kūiti and the wider Waitomo district,” Jose said. The newly-formed group aims to provide a place for local Malayali families to connect, support newcomers settling in the area, celebrate their culture and create opportunities for volunteering and involvement in the wider Te Kūiti and Waitomo community. For families who have made Te Kūiti their home, the new organisation also provides an opportunity to maintain a connection with their Kerala heritage while developing new connections in their adopted community, Jose said.

Centre transformation proposed

Multi-million-dollar plans to transform Te Kūiti’s Les Munro Centre into a community hub incorporating the district library will go before Waitomo District Council later this month. Waitomo mayor John Robertson said the proposal would make better use of the underused centre while addressing growing pressure on the town’s library. “We have got a (centre) that is not used enough and a library that is bursting at the seams,” Robertson told The News. “Should we merge the two?” Under the concept, a revamped Les Munro Centre could provide improved access to technology, art, culture, history, education

and learning, while continuing to offer space for meetings and community activities. It received strong support at a recent open day at the centre, where residents were invited to share their views and suggest future uses for the facility. Participants were asked to imagine what redesigned spaces could look like, with suggestions including a youth centre, cinema, maker spaces and a regular community market. The idea emerged after Robertson attended a session on rethinking community spaces at last year’s Local Government New Zealand Super Local Conference. He has also visited Auckland’s Takanini Library and Community Hub, which combines traditional library services with community facilities, meeting

rooms, a kitchen and play areas. Robertson said projects designed to enrich communities often took years to develop and required extensive consultation and public accountability. The council previously investigated combining the library and Les Munro Centre, using Better Off funding to undertake preliminary work. Robertson pointed to the Gallagher Recreation Centre as an example of a community project that took several council terms to deliver.

“We don’t want the Les Munro Centre to sit empty for large chunks of the year, so it’s important we explore how it could better serve our district as well as looking at ways we can reduce its ongoing cost to ratepayers,” he said. “The positive feedback we received throughout the day shows there is strong interest in making the most of this valuable community asset.” Councillors will decide on September 29 whether to advance the proposal for further consultation and investigation.

Plans for a selfie pole to complement Kāwhia Harbour’s selfie frame are being rethought. Kāwhia/Aotea Community Board deputy chair Hinga Whiu asked board member Richard Harpur for an update on the installation of the selfie pole at last week’s board meeting. “I got a really nice native post, and it was looking really good,” Harpur said. “I did ask board members if they would come down so I could understand the height of it … but nothing happened. Because the person who gave it to me was hesitant, I scrubbed it all up and returned it to him. It’s gone nowhere. You could do something nice and unique, but I need some assistance.” Board chair Geoff Good suggested installing more than a simple post. “It’s taken a long time to get where we are now,” Whiu said. “I will have another think.” – Chris Gardner

Easy rider’s birthday blast By Dan Tasker

Long-time Ōtorohanga businessman John Haddad celebrated his 80th birthday last week with a surprise ride around town on a Harley Davidson motorbike. It was not the first time friends had arranged a Harley birthday surprise for the local icon. Haddad received the same gift 20 years earlier when he turned 60. On September 1, 2006, staff at Haddad’s Menswear and Womenswear, run by John and his brother Karam, presented him with a voucher promising a free ride on the next Harley to pull up outside the shop. The unusual gift suited a man who had long admired the bikes but had never ridden on one. Soon after, then Ōtorohanga mayor Dale Williams arrived on his recently imported white Harley Davidson Fat Boy to give Haddad the experience. “The girls knew I’d bought it and called me up because John had always said he’d never been on a Harley and would like to,” Williams said. “He chatted the whole way and we just had a little scenic tour of the village.” The ride was such a success that long-time employee Kathleen Radke and her fellow staff members decided

to recreate it for Haddad’s 80th birthday. “He is so special to us girls in so many ways,” Radke said. “We had to give him an experience rather than a gift because he loves continuity and we knew he really enjoyed it when we did it for his 60th.” After arriving at the shop for a story invented by staff, Haddad was greeted by Williams, who again turned up on his Harley carrying an extra helmet. “You know what, I’ve still got the helmet and I’ve got the jacket on board, John. The only thing missing is you,”

Williams said. For a rare moment, Haddad swapped his trademark hat for a motorcycle helmet, climbed aboard and headed off for another ride with his old friend. He described the outing as “a very special surprise” after difficult years following Karam’s death in 2022 and a recent battle with bladder cancer. Williams said he would “do anything for Johnny”, adding that Haddad had been a big part of his life for more than 40 years and was as much a part of Ōtorohanga as anybody.

Notice of aerial herbicide spraying Aerial spraying under s 114A Biosecurity Act and Waikato Regional Plan (Rule 6.2.4.9) Waikato Regional Council advises that pursuant to section 114A of the Biosecurity Act 1993 and the Waikato Regional Plan, relating to Widespread Application of Agrichemicals (Permitted Activity Rule 6.2.4.9), spraying of pest plants will occur between 20 September 2026 and 30 November 2026. Application will be by helicopter. Pest plants to be sprayed are listed in the Waikato Regional Pest Management Plan 2022-2032 and include (but are not limited to) variegated thistle (Silybum marianum). Te Nehenehenui has completed Phase I and Phase II of the Trust Deed review process, as required by clause 31 of the Trust Deed. The Trustees will be asking members to vote on the following 4 special resolutions, approving changes to the Trust Deed: Special Resolution 1: The Trust Deed be amended for consistency with, or as a result of, the Trusts Act 2019, the Māori Fisheries Amendment Act 2024, the Maniapoto Claims Settlement Act 2022 and the Privacy Act 2020, being the Category 1 changes described in the Phase III Briefing Document and highlighted in yellow in the marked-up Trust Deed. Special Resolution 2: The Trust Deed be amended to remove obsolete provisions relating to the establishment period and the transition from the Maniapoto Māori Trust Board, being the Category 2 changes described in the Phase III Briefing Document and highlighted in blue in the marked-up Trust Deed. Special Resolution 3: The Trust Deed be amended for other general updates to make the Trust Deed easier to use and understand, and to make operating under it easier from a practical perspective (including correcting typos and errors), being the Category 3 changes described in the Phase III Briefing Document and highlighted in green in the marked-up Trust Deed. Special Resolution 4: The Trust Deed be amended for other changes arising from iwi member feedback received during the Trust Deed review process, being the Category 4 changes described in the Phase III Briefing Document and highlighted in grey in the marked-up Trust Deed. In approving any or all of special resolutions 1 to 4, members will also be confirming that the proposed changes to the Trust Deed are for the collective benefit of the members of Te Nehenehenui and will take effect on a date to be confirmed by the Trustees. Adding Te Awhitu Whānau Maria Marae as a registered marae The Trustees have approved a proposal to add Te Awhitu Whānau Maria Marae (6053 State Highway 4, RD 6, Taumarunui) as a registered marae to Te Nehenehenui, joining Te Whare ki Tuhua Hikurangi. The Trustees will be asking members to vote on the following special resolution: Special Resolution 5: Te Awhitu Whānau Maria Marae be added as a registered marae to Te Nehenehenui, joining Te Whare ki Tuhua Hikurangi, and the Sixth Schedule to the Trust Deed be amended to reflect this change, with effect on a date to be confirmed by the Trustees. Information sharing hui and explanatory documents A series of hui will be held in Aotearoa and Australia between 21 September and 10 October 2026.
