Talent shows in the garden By Mary Anne Gill

A mother and daughter team from Ōtorohanga have taken top honours in the Waikato Home & Garden Show’s Landscape Design Awards, while a Cambridge landscaper impressed judges with a climate-conscious concept that earned him third place. Tidy Gardens owner Katrina Christison, who writes a regular gardening column for Good Local Media, and daughter Kaylee Christison won the gold award for Full Circle, an edible garden inspired by the show’s theme, A Garden for the Future. Their design featured plants chosen not only for their beauty but also for their edible, medicinal and practical uses. The pair spent months planning and researching before building the garden over several days at Claudelands in Hamilton. “We’re thinking forward to the future,” Kaylee said. “With the way things are going, the prices of vegetables in the supermarket, all your sprays and chemicals on your food, it’s about going back to how it used to be in the olden days, growing food and growing plants for food.” Kaylee said more than 90 per cent of the plants in the display were edible. Katrina, an award-winning landscape designer with more than 20 years’ experience, has worked on award-winning gardens at Chelsea, Hampton Court and the World Gardening Cup in Japan. She has operated Tidy Gardens for more than 20 years and moved into garden design in recent years, encouraged aspiring gardeners to trust their instincts. “Trust yourself. Back yourself. Don’t overthink stuff,” Katrina said. Third place went to Cambridge landscaper

A first ever Meads Cup home semi-final has eluded King Country – but a place in the final, possibly a derby clash at that, is still a target. The Rams lost 31-21 to Whanganui at Cooks Gardens on Saturday when a bonus-point would have been enough to sew up top spot for the Meads Cup. King Country produced their poorest performance of the season in the Whanganui wet - the loss condemning the Rams to third and an away semi-final to North Otago in Oamaru this Saturday. Defending Meads Cup champions Mid Canterbury ended up taking the regular season spoils. They face Thames Valley in the other Meads Cup semi-final – having beaten them 39-34 last weekend. The two losing bonus points were enough for the Swampfoxes to stave off South Canterbury and HorowhenuaKapiti (28) to finish fourth. It all started so well for the Rams, going up 14-0 after 11 minutes thanks to tries to centre Logan Patterson, with his 10th five-pointer of 2026, and captain Liam Rowlands scoring from a maul. Despite having minimal ball, Whanganui fed on King Country’s scraps to stay in touch through tries to prop Renato Tikoisolomone and hooker Jack Yarrall in the 19th and 29th minutes respectively. “The brief was a garden for the future, so I kind of didn’t want to put any lawns in,” Eason said. Having permeable surfaces and big shade trees was nice for the summer, “particularly when we’re coming into El Niño”. Low-maintenance gardens were increasingly important as people became busier and urban sections became smaller. “Small gardens are going to be it,” he said. “I really like the limitations of a small build.” Eason is a third-generation landscaper with more than 20 years’ experience. His projects have ranged from work in Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens to a 10-hectare native gully restoration at Takapoto Estate, while closer to home several family members, including his mother Mary Ann, also work in the landscaping industry. Judge Gary Bjerring of Ōhaupō said selecting winners from the four entries had been difficult because of the high standard. “All four sites were very impressive,” he said. Bjerring, who helped establish the Landscape Design Awards more than three decades ago, said judging came down to how well designers interpreted the brief and how the spaces felt to visitors. “We all know the incredible effort that goes into it. The judging itself came down to how people understood the brief and how it worked and how the design actually felt to sit in and be in.” More than 300 exhibitors took part in the four-day show, which featured the returning Landscape Design Awards, Habitat for Humanity workshops, artisan food producers and the new Style Stage. The stage included Cambridge interior designer Kerryn Elwin, who shared decorating tips alongside Australian interior designer Shaynna Blaze and Auckland stylist Evie Kemp.

After more than 50 years serving the community, Te Kūiti lawyer Max Lamb has called time. At the ripe old age of 81, Lamb retired from practicing law as a consultant at Te Kūiti firm Lamb Bain Laubscher last Wednesday, ending career most of which goes back 56 years to when he and his wife Carol became a partner at a firm in 1970. Lamb started his law career while studying at Auckland Law School at the end of 1964 and is looking forward to spending more time with Carol, playing golf and supporting his rugby club Waitete RFC. “I got to the point where I just felt it was time to stop’. It’s an eerie feeling too, I have to say, subconsciously. The thought that I started in November 1964, and now I’m not going to do that anymore,” he said. Originally from Taranaki, Lamb’s family moved to Auckland when he was a teenager, where he chose to chase a career in law instead of following the mechanical trade of his family. “When you look back, of

course, you know nothing about law. It’s just a concept and you romance about the representing and the fighting for the good cause,” Lamb said. “Initially, that attracts most of us and it didn’t take long to realise that, in fact, it’s not the real world. When you go to court, there’s a winner and a loser, not a righter and a wronger, and I couldn’t handle that too well,” he said. After he was admitted to the bar in 1967, Lamb married Carol the following year as the newlyweds settled in Thames for two years, before hearing of a legal practice for sale in Te Kūiti. The owner of the firm, Trevor Maxwell, was keen to sell, but when Lamb decided not to purchase, Maxwell kept him on the hook by offering him a threeyear partnership. “Trevor saw us coming from a million miles, and once we got here and settled, he said he then wanted to leave and reduced the price substantially, so that’s how we came to be here,” Lamb said. His introduction to Te Kūiti was made a little smoother through the “extraordinarily loyal” clientele. “I’ve had six generations of one

family in our office, several of five. Very loyal people, that’s why we’re here basically,” Lamb said. In 1974, Lamb purchased established firm Hine and Gunson and was joined by Wallace Bain, who came on as a partner in the early 1980s, before amalgamating with and becoming a partner of Hamilton company Tompkins Wake in 1983. Three years later, Lamb was elected as the Waitomo District board representative on the Waikato Health Board, and eventually moved his law office to Hamilton between 1989 after Bain left the company. Lamb returned to open an office in Te Kūiti after leaving Tompkins Wake in 1997, eventually selling his practice to Bain and Sam Laubsher in 2002, where he has worked as a consultant ever since. Throw in several directorship stints, including 17 years on the Braemar Hospital Charitable Trust, regular work on community trusts and countless hours volunteering for community groups. Lamb puts his longstanding career down to a love of people. “It’s not because you want to be stood up as some sort of icon;

Over the past week officers have attended an increasing number of reports involving drivers failing to operate their vehicles safely. Many of these incidents have involved motorists travelling through the district who are either visiting New Zealand or are unfamiliar with local road conditions. We encourage members of the public to continue reporting concerning driving behaviour so that police can take appropriate action and help prevent serious harm on our roads. Police recently located and arrested a 57-year-old man in Ōtorohanga following a threatening behaviour incident. The man allegedly acted in a threatening manner towards staff at a local business as well as members of the public who were in the area at the time. He has since been charged with a further three offences. Police opposed bail, and he has been remanded in custody ahead of a court appearance later this week. In a separate incident, Police arrested a 36-year-old man in Ōtorohanga after reports he had breached the conditions

it’s just natural, that’s why you’re there. You enjoy it, and if you can help, you help.” he said. An acknowledgement of Lamb’s half-century of service to his local community was seen through him receiving life memberships with Waitete RFC, King Country Rugby Union and the Te Kūiti and District Historical Society in recent years. Lamb will continue to represent a handful of windfarms in retirement. He acknowldged Carol, children Geof and Christine and the local community for their support through his career.

of his electronically monitored bail by making unauthorised deviations. He was transported to Hamilton Custody Unit without incident. Police responded to reports of a disorder incident in Te Kūiti involving occupants of a residential address engaged in a heated verbal dispute. Upon arrival, staff found both parties to be under the influence of alcohol. However, the situation had de-escalated, and neither person expressed any concerns for their safety or a desire for further police action. Officers provided prevention-focused advice, particularly around the consumption of alcohol and the likelihood of further enforcement action should additional calls for service be required. Both occupants responded positively to the advice provided, and the matter was resolved without further incident. Staff attended several family harm incidents across Ōtorohanga, Te Kūiti and

the wider Waitomo district during the week. In one case, police issued a 10day Police Safety Order to a man identified as the predominant aggressor. Family harm continues to be a significant concern in our communities, and we encourage anyone experiencing abuse, or anyone concerned about the safety of a friend, family member or neighbour, to seek help and contact police. Support is available, and early intervention can make a significant difference. Earlier in the week, police observed a couple of motorcyclists speeding through Te Kūiti. Staff followed up with one rider after he and is bike were located and he was issued with several infringement notices. The rider was also served with a roadside safety directive prohibiting him from riding a motorcycle. As always, thank you for the support please keep reporting suspicious activity, unsafe driving, and criminal behaviour as it occurs.

An update of Kawhia and Aotea’s Civil Defence Community Response Plans is underway.

Council responses

Ōtorohanga mayor Rodney Dow discussed his council’s amalgamation plans with Waitomo during his monthly report to council last week after being prompted by chief executive Tanya Winter. Dow described the outcome of the Government’s Head Start programme as “a false start” and said many people were upset by it. Waitomo mayor John Robertson told his council meeting “we want to keep talking. It won’t go away. Something will happen. We want the right outcome for ourselves and Ōtorohanga”.

Tamahere’s festival link By Mary Anne Gill

New Zealand’s biggest music festival, is poised to move from Gisborne to Tamahere, multiple sources say. The News understands Rhythm and Vines organisers have identified a Hooker Rd property adjoining the Waikato River and Te Awa River Ride as their preferred venue. The site, close to the Waikato Expressway and Hamilton Airport and in the Waikato district, is in the area earmarked for a thoroughbred racing headquarters. If confirmed, the move would see thousands of festival-goers welcome 2028 from the paddocks of Tamahere rather than the vineyards of Gisborne. The news comes in the same week Waikato District Council chief executive Craig Hobbs announced his resignation after just 18 months in the role. Mayor Aksel Bech revealed the timing of that announcement had been brought forward following what he described as baseless and deeply personal social media attacks. A complaint has been lodged with both Facebook and police under legislation dealing with digital harm.

Te Awa River Ride runs alongside land identified by sources as the preferred site for a Waikato home for Rhythm and Vines. Photo: Mary Anne Gill

The issue echoes a recent dispute involving Waipā District Council executive Kirsty Downey. Although the online comments related to Downey’s former role at Tauranga City Council and the failed Bella Vista development, Waipā District Council funded legal action and later confirmed it had spent $88,343 on associated legal costs. Posts relating to both Hobbs and Downey have since been removed. While speculation about Rhythm and Vines has been circulating for months, Bech would neither confirm nor deny the Hooker Road location when contacted by

The News this week. He confirmed no resource consent application had been lodged with the council but acknowledged he was aware of the rumours. Pressed on whether council had been involved in discussions about a major event in the district, Bech said organisers were generally encouraged to engage with councils before entering formal consent processes. “The flip side of a rural area is you inconvenience fewer people,” he said when speaking generally about the suitability of large events in country locations. Any proposal would need to address traffic management, access to the

expressway, wastewater, drinking water and noise impacts, he said. The location identified by sources is also in the area being promoted as a potential site for a new Waikato thoroughbred racing headquarters. The riverside property and surrounding land have increasingly become the focus of large-scale development proposals because of their size, accessibility and proximity to Hamilton Airport and the Waikato Expressway, signalling growing interest in the district as a destination for major events and investment. Bech noted that separate

projects had already identified the same area as offering opportunities for large-scale developments. “It is not an area that’s completely random,” he said. The Waikato possibility follows reports that Rhythm and Vines organisers are preparing to announce a new venue after signalling the festival’s future lies away from Gisborne. Festival founder Hamish Pinkham told Radio New Zealand last month that discussions over a new location were progressing and an announcement was expected before the end of the year. Mystery Creek has also been linked to the search for a new venue because of its established events infrastructure and experience hosting largescale gatherings, but sources say the Hooker Rd site has emerged as the preferred option. Should the move proceed, it would represent one of the largest events ever staged in the Waikato district, bringing tens of thousands of visitors into the region over the New Year period and delivering a significant economic boost to accommodation providers, hospitality businesses and tourism operators. Organisers have yet to comment publicly on the reported move.

Neighbouring councils think big By Chris Gardner

Ōtorohanga, Waitomo and Waipa district councils are among 15 local authorities investigating forming New Zealand’s second-largest building consent authority. The project was commissioned by the Waikato Chief Executive Forum in response to building sector reform and facilitated by the multi councilcontrolled Co-Lab (Waikato Local Authority Shared Service) involving councils from the Waikato, Bay of

Plenty and Gisborne regions Waitomo District Council chief executive Ben Smit updated his council on the Building Control Collaboration Project at last week’s council meeting. “The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment has instructed all councils to actively consider voluntary consolidation and is progressing legislative change intended to remove existing barriers to collaboration,” Smit said. The project began earlier this year, and the design and decision case is

due to be completed by the end of the year. “Collectively, the participating councils could design what would become New Zealand’s second largest Building Control Authority, creating scale and capability that individual councils cannot readily achieve on their own,” Smit said. “The strategic goals of the project are a consistent and predictable customer experience, faster processes and improved productivity, stronger decision quality and regulatory integrity,

greater capability, resilience and shared capacity, improved financial sustainability and value for money, and stronger data, information management and continuous improvement.” The project team identified potential benefits from collaboration, including reduced accreditation costs if councils are able to group together, greater resilience and access to specialist capability, opportunities, and greater ability to respond to future regulatory, technology and market changes.

New Zealand has signed up to global agreements that include reducing the emission of gases reputed to cause global warming. If you don’t believe in climate change, read no further, as I do believe it’s happening, and that we all need to do something about it. I have no time for the argument that our small size makes our contribution too small to be important, especially when the largest countries, India, the USA, and the Chinese, are not on board with accepting their responsibilities. To me that’s no excuse, as I feel every little bit counts. I believe in what I see around me, and what I see in my world is climate change that is too rapid to ignore, and the outcome of doing nothing is too awful to contemplate. Then I read in our election blurb, that ACT and NZ First want to pull us out of the Paris accord on climate change commitments. So I will vote for someone who appears to more in tune with what’s happening. That leaves me a bit shorter of parties to vote for than I would like, as while I believe in the good intentions of the Green Party, I’m not sure that they have a good enough grasp of makes the world go around to risk letting them anywhere near the treasury benches. Then there is the political interference with the emissions trading scheme by wellmeaning people in the aforementioned parties, and from the commissioner for the environment, Simon Upton, who seem to

believe that the ETS is not fit for purpose. takes too much land out of productive pasture and causes rural depopulation. I don’t believe that’s the case. The ETS, from which we have done quite nicely, may not be perfect, but is an acceptable way of causing carbon sequestration on an unprecedented scale. I’m sure it has taken too much good land out of agriculture, but it has also made some very average to bad land profitable. As for rural depopulation, the ETS may play a part, but a very small part when compared to that which has occurred with 50 years of farm amalgamations. Farms have had to become bigger for financial viability, a natural progression, but let the blame for that fall where it should – on input prices, charges, rates and fees. The other great reason for keeping going with our emissions reduction plan, is even more serious. And that is from nontariff trade barriers I believe would be imposed on our export markets by trading partners looking for any excuse not to buy from countries which are not part of the ETS. In theory, mankind is the most intelligent life form to have occupied our lonely planet, but when I cast my eye around the world, I’m not so sure that the human race can take any accolades. We seem to be hell bent on destruction. I’ll stop now, my own writing is depressing me. Advertorial

Back to business By Dan Tasker

New World Te Kūiti is open for business again following a fire that ripped through the front of the building on September 19. The town’s main supermarket was put out of action for 10 days after a customer’s mobility scooter caught fire. It became the start of an unknown journey back to

Web stats

The case for preserving Taumatamaire – a column by Waitomo mayor John Robertson - was the most-read story on the paywall-free King Country News website last month. Birthday celebrations for long-time Ōtorohanga businessman John Haddad was second followed by the Te Kūiti man left traumatised after his mobility scooter caught fire and claimed the life of his dog outside a supermarket. Rounding out the top five were stories on a proposed Kāwhia bus service and the launch of a new Malayali community group. The home page was the most visited page overall, while the e-Editions page came in next.

business for owner Dave Jones, who had never encountered an emergency event since joining New World Te Kūiti in mid2021 or at New World Ngāruawāhia in the three years prior. Jones and his partner Nay Rogers were driving just north of Ōtorohanga when an off-site employee called to let them know of the fire. “I could see the Ōtorohanga crew coming behind us and I thought, ‘That’s not good’,” Jones said. On arrival, Jones and Rogers accounted for the well-being of their team, as they watched the Ōtorohanga fire fighters help the two Te Kūiti crews fight back the

flames. Six hours later, they were allowed into the store for the first time, getting a glimpse of the chaos and damage. “We didn’t quite realise what we were in for at that stage. There was a lot of smoke in there, there was also a lot of water with ash covering the floors, so each aisle apart from the far aisle was effectedly like a little ashy river,” Jones said. The next 10 days became a thorough recovery and cleaning exercise, as Jones and Rogers called in the Foodstuffs North Island support centre, two contract cleaning teams, their staff plus support from the Ministry of Primary

Industries to get the store opened again. “The biggest thing for us is we need to guarantee to our customers in our community that every surface is decontaminated, deep cleaned, sanitised, and there’s fresh stock in the store,” Jones said. “Our team has rolled up its sleeves, looked after one another and done whatever was needed to help get the store back on its feet. We know having the store closed has been inconvenient,” Jones said. New World Te Kūiti has also made a $2500 donation to the Te Kūiti Volunteer Fire Brigade for their efforts in putting the fire out.

Rams chase a pot of gold

Continued from page 1

Hone Mathieson will want his time again after a number of key blunders, including a botched chip kick in King Country’s red zone gifting Whanganui their first try. Even so, the Rams got back to work and consolidated through a try to flanker Reeve Satherley to hold a handy 21-12 lead at the break. That’s as good as it got for King Country though, as poor accuracy, discipline and handling hampered their second half efforts, and in the end, it cost them a home Meads Cup semifinal. The Rams gave away eight penalties compared to Whanganui’s four in the second half, and there was a late yellow card to wing Styris Harland taking away their momentum and piling the pressure on themselves. Whanganui were disciplined and workmanlike, kept the Rams scoreless in the second half and kept retain the Pinetree Log. But with every rugby rainstorm there is a rainbow, and for King Country it comes with a pot of gold – beat North Otago and get a crack at the Meads Cup for the first time in the competition’s 20-year history. Memories of their 32-31 last-minute loss to North Otago in round three will be front of mind this week, and the Rams will have every intention of righting those wrongs in two days. Who coach Aarin Dunster will take to do the job is largely set but there remains a few questions as the stakes are lifted. Whether they take young Te Awamutu Sports prop Hemi Gardner or his club mate and former Waikato prop Joe Walsh to partner Rowlands and vice-captain Carey Cornelius in the front row remains to be seen. Leveson Gower may have done enough to claim the number seven jersey ahead of Viliame Nacama and Te Kotahitanga Te Tawhero, after the Districts captain’s got his first run of the Heartland campaign against Whanganui. It’s a roll of the dice of what wingers make the trip south, with Waitete’s Baven Brown likely to be one of them after returning from a shoulder injury last Saturday, while Piopio’s Jackson Hurley may also get the nod ahead of Samesa Bainivalu if the ankle injury he picked up against Whanganui settles.

Tragedies in the river By Meghan Hawkes

After stacking firewood on the banks of the Mōkau River in November 1921, Frederick Williscroft called out to his 22-year-old son Reuben on the other side of the river to bring the punt over to collect it. Frederick and another son then went back to get more wood. When they returned the punt was mid-stream, but no one was on it. Reuben’s cap lay on the punt, and the ferry boat, which the Williscroft family operated, was tied alongside. They at once feared an accident had happened and the police were alerted. Constable Blaikie and Norman Clifton recovered Reuben’s body close to the punt. Restorative measures were tried but it was too late. Reuben was taken to his brother’s house to await an inquest. No one being with Reuben at the time, nothing was known of how the accident happened, but it was speculated that he had probably gone to the edge of one of the doors of the punt to push it down and had slipped and fallen into the water. Being unable to swim, he had no chance of saving himself. A verdict

of accidental drowning was returned. Reuben was buried at Mōkau cemetery, many attending the funeral to honour the quiet, unassuming young man who was popular with all who knew him. Firewood collecting also was the intention of 20-yearold Cyril Murray in early January 1923. He had just travelled up from Dunedin to spend the New Year with the Raven family of Mōkau River. Cyril, along with three Raven brothers, lashed some logs together to make a raft to ferry the firewood across the river. When one of the logs broke loose Cyril swam after it. He took a rope in his hand, Charles Raven on the riverbank holding the other end, and started out for the log swimming strongly on his back. He then turned over and suddenly his arms fell and he sank. Charles called to his two brothers and removed some clothes preparing to swim to Cyril’s assistance if he should resurface. He also pulled on the rope, thinking Cyril might have tied it to himself, but it seemed he had let go of it. Dragging operations immediately started and when Constable Blaikie

arrived he brought with him the Government grab hooks and gear. But the snags in the river meant the hooks were lost and others had to be improvised. The search carried on until darkness fell. At 4.30am the next day Blaikie returned with a fresh set of hooks. The depth of the water was about 40ft in places, and the snags, together with the strong current, made the work very difficult. Cyril’s dungarees and flax belt were recovered. Dragging continued for four days, a number of settlers helping until Cyril was located. An inquest found he had accidentally drowned. Cyril, a singer and flute player of some ability, was returned home and buried at Andersons Bay, Dunedin. He had been engaged to one of the Raven daughters of Mōkau and they were soon to have been married.

What goes up must come down. Sometimes that is very quick, in the blink of an eye. Sometimes it takes centuries or even millions of years. Gravity always wins eventually. Here in Aotearoa we are becoming much more knowledgeable about landslides as wild weather whips its way across our landscape. Those are examples of fast geologic processes. The slower processes can be much more immense. As rock breaks down into smaller bits of rock, becoming smaller down to millimetres and smaller, we call that sediment. That sediment is moved by wind and water across the landscape and into our oceans. Currents and other processes move this sediment across the ocean floor. Where river systems reach the ocean, we see some of the more significant examples of this, called submarine fans. The largest of these is the Bengal Fan, offshore India and Bangladesh, extending well past Sri Lanka into the open Indian Ocean. This enormous pile of sediment spans three million square kilometres reaches 16.5 km thick. This results from the slow but powerful push of India into Asia, pushing crust upwards to form the Himalayan mountain range. This process is too slow for us to see with our short human life spans, but the effect is astounding. The fact that the summit of Mount Everest is limestone that holds fossils from a long-gone seafloor shows us just how much change is achieved with enough time. As these enormous mountains and the surrounding landscape are worn down by wind, ice, and water, the remnants are carried

to the Bay of Bengal mostly by the Ganges and Brahmaputra river systems. The seafloor across the Bengal Fan is beautiful. It hosts a series of underwater river channels that meander generally southwards, transporting sand and silt deeper and deeper. Some of these channels are more than 200km long and carve beautiful patterns into the seafloor. If you think of how our rivers on land form s-shaped bends and turns, that is what we see on the seafloor. Weather systems and climate also have a part to play. Glaciers grind down the rock into smaller and smaller bits. Earthquakes can trigger landslides and rockfalls into the system. Monsoons and storms carry larger volumes of sediment-laden water downslope. Larger-scale sea level change also plays a part in the sediment supply and where it goes. Turbidity currents are watery surges of sediment across the seafloor that can carry the material further from the river mouth where it began. This gigantic mix of complex processes that has been evolving over many millions of years is part of a beautiful cycle. The top of Everest formed on the seafloor, and now the very mountain range is slowly eroding with the resulting sediments making their way to create new seafloor. One of many large cycles that shape our planet while we go about our everyday lives. As generations make their way through life on this spinning ball of rock, these vast geologic processes continue quietly in the background.

PLANT OF THE MONTH

Daphne odora

The scent of late winter and early spring If there’s one plant that truly earns its spot in a garden just for scent alone, it’s Daphne odora. Right now, it’s in full bloom, and if you’ve walked past one recently, you’ll know exactly what I mean. The perfume is divine – rich, sweet, and spicy all at once. It stops people in their tracks. A scented superstar Often called Winter Daphne, Daphne odora is a compact evergreen shrub that flowers in the cooler months, usually from late winter into early spring. The blooms are small, pink or white, and gathered in tight clusters – but don’t let their size fool you. These little flowers pack a serious punch in the fragrance department. Ideal positioning Daphne can be a bit particular about where it likes to live. For the happiest plant, choose a spot where it gets morning sun and afternoon shade – or filtered light throughout the day. A sheltered position, away from harsh wind

and strong afternoon sun, is ideal. One of the best places to plant it? Right next to a path, gate, or near your front door – anywhere people walk past regularly. That way you (and everyone else) can enjoy that heady scent up close. Keep its feet cool Like a lot of shrubs, Daphne odora likes its roots to be cool and moist but not wet. Think of it like this: warm face, cool feet. Plant it in well-drained soil, and mulch around the base (but not up against the stem) to keep the root zone protected and moist. Surrounding it with groundcovers, or planting in a slightly raised bed, can also help with drainage and keep things cool underfoot. If you’re after that unforgettable winter fragrance wafting through your garden, now’s the perfect time to pop into your local garden centre and grab a Daphne odora for yourself. They’re in bloom right now, so you can pick the perfect one – and trust me, once you catch that scent, you won’t want to leave without it!
