Wintec deal announced

Wintec and Te Nehenehenui have put pen to a partnership to the benefit of Maniapoto students. Representatives from Te Nehenehenui and Wintec came together to sign the relationship commitment, Te Whakapiringa Pono o Maniapoto me Te Kuratini o Waikato, at Te Kōpū Mānia o Kirikiriroa marae on Wintec’s campus last month. The “success and wellbeing of Maniapoto ākonga (students) and their whānau, hapū, and iwi” is the foundation of the partnership. Te Nehenehenui is the postsettlement governance entity for Maniapoto.

Its group chair Peter Douglas spoke recently at a sod turing ceremony marking the start of a housing project the size and speed of which had not been seen in the area before according to Waitomo mayor John Robertson (see story – page 6) Te Nehenehenui Group chief executive Samuel Mikaere said the Wintec partnership reflects the aspirations of Te Kawau Rukuroa to create enduring opportunities that strengthen Maniapoto identity, wellbeing, and prosperity. “By supporting our ākonga (students) into education pathways, we are investing in the future of our people

and ensuring that Maniapoto values and mātauranga remain at the heart of their success”. Warwick Pitts, Wintec Operations Lead, who attended the signing said Wintec was committed to working alongside mana whenua to support the educational aspirations of Maniapoto and local ākonga and their whānau. “Education plays an important role in supporting thriving communities and our partnership with Maniapoto reflects our shared goal of supporting our ākonga to succeed,” he said. this year of Te Huinga o Te Tangata, a mana whenua pilot health pathways programme. Co-designed and delivered alongside Te Nehenehenui, the Wintec bridging programme supported 15 aspiring Maniapoto Māori health professionals to enter tertiary education. Te Wai Collins, Pouārahi Māori, Wintec Executive Director Tiriti Partnerships and Māori Success, believes strong and meaningful partnerships with iwi, hapū, industry, and community is vital to providing positive learning and career outcomes for learners. “Working together with Te Nehenehenui we’re committed to creating learning environments that incorporate and respect Maniapoto values, mātauranga, and tikanga, enhancing learning outcomes for Maniapoto ākonga,” said Collins. “Te Huinga o Te Tangata is an opportunity to collaborate with mana whenua, and address workforce demand by supporting ākonga from the region to progress into health degree programmes.” The course combined content guided by Tikanga Māori, Mātauranga Māori, and local mana whenua narratives, and mixed on-campus, online, and marae-based learning for a rounded and inclusive experience. It will be continued in 2026 and applications are open for semester one.

Harrison Leslie’s poem, an ode to an iconic, hardworking tractor is showcased on the Poets’ Billboard on Maniapoto Street The first work to feature was by poet and author Sylvia Beveridge, titled ‘Walk Softly’. Beveridge reviewed a collection of poetry by Korakonui School students before selecting three standout pieces – the other two will have their moment in the sun in the near future. The billboard is intended to celebrate creative stories by members of the community. Harrison’s poem, entitled Massey Ferguson reads: I like its grippy tires, Its tread looks like a ladder. I like the inside of the wheels, they are as round as a donut. I like my Massey Ferguson, it runs on the farm all day. It mows the grass and feeds the cows, no matter how hard the day, it runs and runs. I like its trailer on the back, it’s like a toddler chasing its parent.

Calling for volunteers By Jon Rawlinson

An alarm has been raised at the Piopio Volunteer Ambulance Station but, fortunately, it’s not quite a matter of life and death. The station’s manager, Mike Johnson, is calling for new recruits. “We have 10 people, but a couple are going on study leave next year, so we’re definitely going to lose two,” he told The News. “It would be nice to have a few volunteers going through training at the same time because we will need some more help.” Recently, Hato Hone St John has been preparing for volunteer recruitment in 2026. The aim is to grow teams in Mōkau and Kāwhia as well as Piopio. Volunteers will begin developing their skills from day one. “But it’s not like they’ll be out on the road straight away, there’s a full training process,” said Johnson. “They will train through St John providers and undertake driving courses as well as equipment use and the first responder first aid courses.” Even when they are ready to hit the road, new volunteers will have the benefit of working with some highly experienced

personnel. While Mike has almost 40 years’ service under his belt, two other Piopio officers, Ken Perry and Susan Downey, have served for 20 and 15 years respectively. The recruits may also benefit from another of Johnson’s skillsets. For approximately 30 years, he worked as a teacher at Piopio College as well as in England and the Hawke’s Bay. While the subject matter may be very different, instruction by a professional educator couldn’t hurt. Now exclusively based in Piopio, Johnson provided casual relief as required up until early 2025. “I’ve been volunteering here in Piopio, but I started in Te Kūiti as a fixed-term (or casual paid) officer back in 1998,” he said. While some may choose to pursue a paid career with St John from the start, volunteering can prove a useful stepping stone. “St John runs courses where people come out with medical technician qualifications and they can then be employed as full-time officers,” Johnson said. “But volunteering can be a good first step.” Rob Chisholm, group

Take care on the road King Country police have had a challenging week, with staff attending several critical incidents that have impacted our community. Local police assisted at the scene of a crash on Arapuni Road where a parent has tragically lost their life. This was an incredibly difficult incident for staff in attendance, and our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and friends affected. We strongly urge everyone to take extra care on the roads during this holiday period. This matter is still under investigation. Police are seeking anyone who has witnessed or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage of the events leading up to the crash. Staff also responded to an incident in Te Kūiti involving two adult male family members who became involved in an altercation at the Muster Bar. One male

sustained serious injuries, including lacerations to his neck and leg. A male was arrested on the night, and due to the nature of the incident, the matter has been referred to detectives for further investigation and prosecution. Police executed a search warrant at an address in Ōtorohanga following reports of harassment-related incidents involving an ex-partner engaging in concerning behaviour. A 20-year-old male was arrested and charged with criminal harassment and burglary. If you or someone you know is experiencing similar issues, please don’t hesitate to reach out for help. Another incident involved Police checking on a broken-down vehicle on a rural Ōtorohanga road. The occupants struggled to communicate with staff in a productive manner. Given the location and

risk of offending, Police transported the pair out of the area and assisted with moving the vehicle. Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve noticed an increase in dishonesty offending, with vehicles in Te Kūiti and Ōtorohanga being targeted. Please report any suspicious activity and take preventative measures such as removing valuables from vehicles, locking and removing keys, and ensuring cameras or sensor lights are working. On a positive note, it was fantastic to be part of the Te Kūiti Christmas Parade on Friday. It was great to see such a strong turnout and community spirit. Waikato Thoroughbred Racing has secured a conditional deal to buy 150 hectares in Tamahere, marking the first major step toward relocating and modernising the region’s thoroughbred racing operations. The “super club,” – a 2023 merger of Waikato Racing, Cambridge Jockey and Waipā Racing clubs, has chosen a dairy farm site bordering the Waikato Expressway with Pencarrow and Duncan roads on either side.

Mark called up

Mark Seager, a second-year apprentice in Ōtorohanga, will compete for New Zealand in the Asia-Pacific Lacrosse Union men’s championship qualifier next month in Wellington. Seager hopes to help New Zealand win a berth at the 2027 Division 1 world champs.

Butter plant

Open Country Dairy opened a new $50 million butter factory at its Wahāroa site last week. The plant represents a major boost for the region’s dairy industry and local economy. The plant will produce 20,000 tonnes of premium unsalted butter each year. One line will supply bulk international customers and another will be dedicated to retail packs for Costco USA under a threeyear contract.

Security decision pending

Workers at Te Kūiti Hospital could see a better security presence when working overnight. The News reported earlier this year that Health NZ was seeking to train cleaners and other hospital staff to double as security guards. But now Health NZ (Te Whatu Ora) says it is working with its security provider to introduce a “dedicated overnight security position” at Te Kūiti Hospital. The information was provided by, group director, operations, Waikato Stephanie Doe.````` “We’re not able to provide a more detailed update on the pending appointment as the process is still ongoing. All staff currently undertaking security duties at Te Kūiti Hospital have the required qualification to do

so,” she said. The Zealand Nurses Organisation complained in May that security would not be fit for purpose if cleaners were used security guards – and that nurses would feel unsafe. In the middle of the year Health NZ was working towards an “integrated security, cleaning and attendant services model” already in use in Thames and Taumarunui for Te Kūiti and Tokoroa. Staff members – including cleaners, orderlies and maintenance workers – had been receiving security training. Health NZ said the service was introduced in the Waikato region to support the “unique” needs of rural healthcare sites where patient volumes and security

incidents were typically low. Should a night guard be employed, E tū director Mat Danaher would welcome it. He said the multi skilled model cannot work in

hospitals where specialist security is needed. “Security officers in hospitals have significantly different roles to those in retail, for example. The

best guarantee of a safe and secure hospital is a directly employed, trained security team who form an integrated part of the workforce.”

A blockbuster parade

There were lights, cameras and action as Waitomo held its annual Christmas Parade last Friday. Following a Christmas movie theme, the event was intended to deliver a most wonderful event for the wonderful time of the year. The mayor and Michelle Freebairn provided photos from the parade for The News. “As I expected, there was a big crowd and plenty of floats – about 20 – and by my estimate, about 1000–1500 people,” he told The News. “It was great to see so many children and gifts given out to them including soft toys from

community groups. It was a wonderful way to celebrate with whānau and friends.” A merry time was had by actors and the audience alike and everything went according to script, Robertson added. The bright sparks at The Lines Company won the float completion followed by Aptitude Hair Design and Explorers Early Learning Centre.

Pōhutukawa Stamen Cordial I shared this last year… and guess what? I didn’t even try it! So this year I’m determined to give it a go. With Christmas speeding toward us and our gorgeous New Zealand Christmas trees — the beloved pōhutukawa — bursting into flower, it feels like the perfect time to bring this recipe back out. The pōhutukawa is such an iconic tree for us around Kāwhia. One of the most significant is the ancient pōhutukawa the Tainui waka was tied to when it first landed. It’s a treasured landmark and a powerful reminder of the deep history woven through our coastline. You’ll spot pōhutukawa all along the coast, loving the warmth, sunshine, and freedraining soils. It’s famous for those stunning red blooms, and it plays a huge role in protecting our coastal areas by holding soil and cliffs together. The tui and bellbirds also absolutely love it — the summer nectar is basically their Christmas feast. So, here’s the recipe I still haven’t tried but absolutely will this year: Pōhutukawa Stamen Cordial Makes 1 litre Ingredients: • 300–400g pōhutukawa stamens • 1 litre water • 100g sugar

Method: Bring the water to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Add the sugar and simmer until it dissolves. Turn off the heat. Toss in your stamens and let them steep overnight — like a big, floral cup of tea. The next day, strain out the

stamens. Press them gently (don’t squeeze). Bottle your cordial in something clean and airtight. Serve with bubbles or gin — apparently it’s delicious! Wishing you all a safe, happy, and very festive Christmas season!

Lava domes are fascinating things. In short, they are when a volcano builds a small, unstable, dangerous mountain, that will likely collapse at some point (or many). When lava reaches the surface at a nearsolid or solid state, with much of the gases released as it rose through the crust, it can build vertically at the surface and form a large rocky mound, or a dome. When a lava dome is growing, we call this an effusive eruption. These are more evolved magmas than the runnier (lower-viscosity) lava flows we see in videos out of Iceland or Hawaii, but like the majority of those eruptions, they are not explosive. Explosive means that the magma or lava is being blasted apart by violently expanding gases to form volcanic ash and rock chunks. This can form an ash plume or pyroclastic flow. Lava domes can grow from pushing more lava up from the inside, or lava accumulating on the outside. Both scenarios mean that near-solid to solid rock is squeezing through the dome. There will be shaking associated with this, and volcanic gases moving through the system that may cause alteration. This all makes for an unstable situation. To add to it, the lava dome could form on a steep surface, or grow to overtop a crater. They can also reach hundreds of metres in height. After the major eruption of Mount St Helens on May 18, 1980, the eruption period didn’t actually end there. A dome grew within the new crater, reaching around 300m above the crater

floor. For reference, the Sky Tower in Auckland is 328 m. If you were to watch a lava dome grow it might not look like anything much was happening. You might see a few rockfalls that kick up dust, and if you were there at night you would see the glow of hot rock. Occasionally you might see a small ash plume. But something else can happen. With all this instability, huge chunks can collapse. When this happens, a block-and-ash flow forms, which is a type of pyroclastic flow with a high portion of solid rock bits with many easily exceeding the size of a car. Additionally, the breaking down of hot rock as it hurtles down the slope releases hot volcanic gases. These flows can destroy everything in their path and bury the landscape in metres of rock, reaching kilometres from the volcano. The deposits I studied for my PhD at Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka, Russia, reached 19km from the dome. This process can also trigger an explosive eruption, releasing an ash plume high into the atmosphere. This is an example of how a volcanic eruption might not always look like one. While it may appear peaceful, the situation can turn violent in an instant. It’s yet another reason why I have a very healthy respect for volcanoes, and why keeping a good distance can be the best option.

Gun law changes supported Amendments to firearms legislation could cut red tape that some say has tied the hands of legitimate users, as Jon Rawlinson explains. Reloading the Arms Act should make it easier for farmers, hunters and other legitimate gun owners to retain access to the right tools for the job. Te Kūiti Trap Shooters Club president and Pirongia local Neil Pratt says the government’s proposed changes could make a marked difference in this respect. “The big thing is that we won’t be characterised as an immediate threat from the get-go. Instead, licensed firearms owners will be given the benefit of the doubt so we can go ahead and use firearms as we need to.” Less time will need to be spent on administration, he expects. “The changes would be good for shooting clubs for a start because regulations should ease substantially. It will take away onerous reporting responsibilities from the clubs, which will make life a lot easier for all of those people running these organisations.” The Arms Act 1983 has been amended multiple times, including in the wake of the Christchurch terrorist shootings. However, the 2019

reforms have inadvertently tied the hands of legitimate users, Pratt says. “When they changed the legislation, thousands of clubs had to record all of the people they sold ammunition to and all sorts of other ridiculous things. All going well, we may just have to follow the rules of the act without the whole reporting structure.” Rather than reform the act, the government is aiming for it to be repealed and replaced. While Pratt is at home on the range, he is also a veteran hunter. In addition to game birds, he is a deerstalker and he has assisted in pest control by targeting other pest species including wild goats and feral cats. While professional pest controllers can still obtain permission to use some semi-automatic weapons, they aren’t the only ones who eradicate pests. Farmers routinely engage in pest control and, depending on their quarry, hunters also help keep many introduced species in check. Although Fish and Game does not consider

game birds to be pests, its members directly contribute to conservation through their licence fees. The organisation has welcomed the government’s intention to overhaul the Arms Act. The approach appears to provide a more pragmatic rule structure, says Fish and Game’s Auckland/Waikato game bird manager David Klee. “There were some unintended consequences of the 2019 regulations that made it harder for hunters, whether that’s recreational gamebird hunters or deerstalkers. “Some of the big frustrations for our hunters have been long wait times associated with relicensing, but it seems like some of those things will be ironed out, which is positive.” Fish and Game will be taking part in the act’s select committee process while encouraging other affected groups to make submissions. Spearheaded by Justice minister, Nicole McKee, the new law is intended to make compliance easier for licensed firearm owners. “They have been unfairly

scapegoated for the actions of criminals for too long,” McKee says. “This law focuses on actually making people safer with a fair system that works for all.” While reducing ‘regulatory burdens,’ the proposed legislation will effectively outlaw gun ownership by gang members, guns with serial numbers removed and even the possession of digital files for 3D printing firearms.

Penalties for offences will also increase and rules regarding secure storage will be clarified. In addition, a new, independent regulator will replace the Firearms Safety Authority, operating openly and transparently, McKee says. “The current law has been modified dozens of times with many changes rushed through. The result is a complex, confusing and

bureaucratic patchwork that makes it difficult for (owners) to comply. “The new law will be written in plain English, structured logically with public safety at its core. It makes it much more difficult for firearms to get into the hands of criminals while allowing licensed firearm owners to continue to use their firearms safely and responsibly.”

By 2027, it’s hoped there will be 20 accessible two-bedroom homes, 13 threebedroom homes and seven four-bedroom homes completed on the 3.4 hectares of land purchased from Waitomo District Council between Mangarino Street and The Esplanade. In July, Minister for Conservation, Māori Crown Relations, Māri Development, Whānau Ora and Associate Minister for Housing Tama Pōtaka acknowledged the partnership between the Crown and Te Nehenehenui and its commitment to the Te Kirikiri housing development. The project will be built with funding support from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. The name Te Kirikiri has been gifted by Ngāti Rōrā, carrying the original name of the whenua, recognising the connection and history of those who once lived in the area. “I want to thank Ngāti Rora for reminding us about this land here,” Douglas said. “Te Kirikiri refers to a puna, a spring, that used to be here. It was a good place to live a long time ago and I hope it’s going to be a good place to live here for our people in the future. “I want this to be a safe place, a good place to raise children. So that means that we’re going to be applying not just the manaakitanga aspects of Māori tikanga, but we want our people to be accountable. “We want them to behave well. So that’s going to require us to be involved.” Douglas said the building will create jobs as well as homes and building supply sales for Te Kūiti businesses.

“I hope it’s the first of many. I want it to be a village that people will talk about. We’re not interested in building a ghetto,” Douglas said. “This is a very happy day for us all.” Waitomo mayor John Robertson said it was an exciting time for iwi and council alike. “This is a great initiative for our region, for our district, for Te Kūiti,” Robertson said. “We have never seen a development of what will be this size, in such a short time. “I was assured that the parties are working really well together. We’ll get through that consenting stage and it would be great to see some of the earthworks done in the summer.” Te Nehenehenui Group chief executive Sam Mikaere thanked his board, trustees and iwi members, past and present, for their support of the project. “John, to you and your team, and Ben, from Waitomo, it was happenstance and serendipitous, but it came together in a perfect way, making this a reality for us today, so I just wanted to thank you,” Mikaere said. “The Tika Group have come on board and made sure that this became a reality. “It’s very easy to have a vision, but it takes a very special type of person to get behind you, take our jumbling mumblings and turn it into what it is today - the sod turning into something beautiful for the future. “The vision here is that we create a place that our young people and our kaumatua can coincide and we can have our babies grow in a safe environment.”

Piopio’s Christmas parade will be back on the road again. This year’s parade saw the Project Piopio Trust had hit a roadblock due to increasing costs - but thanks to some last minute hard mahi, it will now go ahead on Christmas Eve as originally planned. “We are extremely excited to finally get the planning for the parade on State Highway 3 over the line,” the trust’s Nicky Atkinson said. New risk-based assessments for road closures seemed to be a bridge too far for organisers to tackle, but following publicity in the King Country News, assistance from NZTA, Waitomo District Council and local contractors ensured the show would go ahead. “The community was extremely disgruntled about not having their traditional parade this year, but it didn’t seem like there was much more we could do,” Atkinson said. “That was until The News published a front page article. We then had a rush of attention from media and the Ministry for Regulation, NZTA, several traffic management companies and others all contacted us offering to help.” An appeal from Carley Simpson, the parade’s main organiser, also seems to have rallied the troops. “Carley has worked so hard to make sure it’s such a fun event for locals, especially the kids,” Atkinson said. “She was so gutted when she heard we may have to stop our traditional parade that she wrote a heartfelt post online which touched many locals. She said that, as a child she’d loved being on the floats and one of her dreams was to organise the Christmas parade.” Another King Country resident was pleased to lend a hand.

When Shirley Pierce discovered she was the guest of honour at a lunch hosted by the Te Kūiti RSA Women’s Section, it was “a lovely surprise.” Now aged 96, Pierce joined the RSA as a teenager. Her lengthy commitment to the organisation was recognised at the Waitomo Club last week. “My daughters told me I might be getting some recognition, but I didn’t expect such a very special day,” she said. “It certainly was a surprise, but a lovely one. I feel greatly honoured and

thankful.” In addition to a long service award from the New Zealand RSA, Shirley was presented with RSA Women’s section certificates for long service and life membership. Members of Pierce’s family, fellow RSA members – including district and regional presidents – and Waitomo District Council mayor John Robertson attended. Shirley joined the RSA in Waimiha alongside her mother in 1925 when the organisation was still relatively young.

Her father was an Anzac who served as a mounted rifleman during the First World War. In the early years, her parents hosted RSA dances at the family home, which was ideal as it had both a large room and a bar in the washhouse. Years later, she met Jack Pierce at another dance. He served as a gunner in the New Zealand Army during the Second World War. Married in 1950, Shirley and Jack were involved with numerous good works for the RSA over the years. Both served on committees and Shirley was particularly active with the association’s Women’s Section. “The major highlights for me have been wonderful friendships over the years,” she said. “The RSA is still very important to Te Kūiti and the surrounding districts. It helps bring the community together while we continue to celebrate and recognise our brave men and women.” The recent lunch was originally intended to be a Christmas get-together for the Te Kūiti RSA Women’s Section, but it became much more. “A few months ago, I was talking to Shirley about her years with the RSA,” section president Glenyss O’Halloran said. “I then went to our local committee to see what recognition could be made. Shirley has worked tirelessly over the years – she has given so much so her recognition was well deserved.” But it was also a nice afternoon out. “It was lovely to catch up with many old friends,” Shirley said. “I loved the day.”

Expecting a whale of time By Jon Rawlinson

The boats are historic, almost as old as the regatta in which they race. For almost 116 years, whaleboat crews have been competing off the King Country coast and, come New Year’s Day, they will do so yet again. A quick start can make all the difference when racing, said Kāwhia Rowing Regatta Club secretary and treasurer, Kelly Dockery. “Once the gun goes off, if

you can get out in front you can go wherever you want – you don’t have to stay in a lane, you can get out of the wind or towards where the tide’s going to help you along.” Each boat is crewed by five rowers and a cox who works the rudder. Course distances vary from 400 to 1300 metres. Strength and strategy matter, but teamwork, technique and timing are essential.

“There’s one big rudder oar and five rowing oars. I’m on the number one oar, which is the stroke, setting the timing,” Dockery said. “Teams need to have trained together enough so that they’re all in sync. Having a decent cox helps make sure of this.” In addition to the host club, the regatta is contested by clubs from Ōpārau and Te Waitere. Various pieces of silverware are on the line. Measuring approximately 11 metres from stem to stern, the boats were designed for racing rather than chasing whales. Most are original, including one now on display at the Kāwhia Museum, and another is a replica. Including a range of events, the regatta is contested by children, teens, adults and seniors, greenhorns and old salts alike. Aged 30, Dockery is a mere spring chicken in comparison to the boats or the event, but she has been competing for most of her life. “My dad (Ross Dockery)

rowed and Allan RuBay and Sandra Drummond, who have run the club for more than 40 years, were my grandma’s best mates,” she said. “I think the first year I rowed was 2006. When my sisters (Eilish and Georgia) started, they were so little that they had to put blocks in the footboards because they couldn’t reach them properly.” While the New Year’s Day regatta is a highlight, it’s

not the only event contested during summer. Late last month, crews from the three clubs competed in the Long Row, an endurance event, and Te Waitere Whaleboat Rowing Club is set to host a regatta on December 27. All hands are on deck to ensure these historic events stay afloat. “Our community is so supportive,” Dockery said. “We couldn’t do it without sponsors and volunteers as well as the Ōpārau and Te

Waitere clubs.” While the boats draw water, it’s the racing that draws a crowd. In its early years, the regatta was attended by traders, settlers and seamen, bushmen, roadworkers and farmers. More than a century on and not too much has changed. “We get a pretty decent turnout every year really. When it’s nice and sunny, you can get 2000, but it all depends on the day.”
