Piopio’s golden pie By Dan Tasker
Winning a national pie award is a dream come true for Tour Khin. The Piopio baker and his wife Sina Se travelled to Auckland on Tuesday last week for the annual New Zealand Bakels Supreme Pie Awards, where Khin received the gold award in
the gourmet meat category for his creamy paua and cheese pie. Khin said he and the team at The Village Bakery in Piopio were excited to win the award, and had already noticed an uptick in customers wanting to taste the award-winning cuisine. “My son is very happy. He said, dad, your dream has
come true,” Khin said. It seems the win has also encouraged more passing motorists to stop in Piopio. “Before when they come to town, sometimes they don’t want to stop, but now they say we’ve got a good pie, they have to stop here,” Khin said. Customers head south to buy pies for family in Te
Awamutu, others come from Ōtorohanga and Hamilton. After entering the pie awards for the last five or six years without success, Khin was determined to make an award-winning pie this time around. “I always thought one day we will win a competition and then now we got there. Hopefully this will help our

business a lot,” Khin said. “We decided this year to get an award, but we were not sure that we could get that. We’ve got lots of friends and family, they have introduced us to making a good pie, we just keep learning from friends,” he said. Aside from the gourmet meat category, Khin entered pies in the mince and cheese, steak and cheese, and bacon and egg sections, working tirelessly for three days before he was happy with the end result. He then sent the four pies up to Auckland for judging, where the judges were impressed with his crunchy pastry and particularly the tasty filling in the creamy
paua and cheese pie. Khin took up baking shortly after arriving in New Zealand, after his aunt sponsored him to leave his home city of Sihanoukville in Cambodia in 2010. He moved from Hamilton to Gisborne and then to Turangi in 2017, where he ran his own bakery until he was forced to close through the Covid-19 pandemic, before opening a café on the main street in Piopio. His wife’s family was running a fish and chip shop in Piopio and asked if Khin and Se wanted to take over the business, so they moved to Piopio in 2024 to turn the shop into a bakery under ‘The Village Bakery’ franchise.

Constable Kavanagh, disguised as a labourer, infiltrated Te Kūiti looking for evidence of illicit trade in intoxicants. Before the week was out the constable, who had been recognised by some, found sufficient proof to lay charges and Constable Berriman was sent to Te Awamutu to get search warrants. The constables then made a seizure at two hop beer breweries, finding in Mr Innes’ brewery a case of bottled porter and in Mr Perry’s brewery two gallons of whisky, a quantity of bottled ale, and one case bottled stout. Dissatisfaction was felt at the thoughtless and indiscriminate manner in which unemployed men were permitted to travel by free train passes to the railway works in the King Country in search of employment. Men had been constantly coming into the country led on by false hopes and tempted by the free ticket. They reached their destination at Waitete or
tramped on from there to the railway tunnel at Poro-o-toroa to find, not work, but bitter disappointment as there was no work at either of those places. The men, many of whom were physically unfit for hard labouring, did not have a shilling to their name and they hung about depending on charity. The more energetic shouldered their swags and walked back along the railway line to the Waikato in the hope of finding work amongst the farmers or local contractors. The King Country swarmed with these unlucky fellows who were frequently seen tramping along the roads. It was seen as cruel for the city authorities to rid themselves of the ‘unemployed nuisance’ by turning them adrift without a penny in their pockets when they must have known that no demand for the men existed. It was high time the free pass system was discontinued and the men

allowed to return to Auckland on their free tickets, instead of having them tramping the country districts without hope and tempted to commit crime out of sheer desperation. ‘Flaming accounts’ were going around regarding the discovery of silver ore somewhere in the King Country, but one who knew very strongly advised people not to be led astray by any yarns or a single sample. The precious minerals existed in the King Country and specimens had been discovered over the years. Twenty odd years ago Mr Buckland found silver ore when journeying through the country, and off and on since specimens had been found, but the lodes from which they came had not been located, or if they had the finders kept the locality a profound secret. A piece of ore reported as having been recently found near Te Kūiti had actually been in possession of the owner for a long time.

Thieves hit rural folk Police have been investigating a number of rural burglaries in the Ōtorohanga, Te Kuiti and Waipa areas. Offenders have been targeting farm vehicles, tools and fuel. During one incident on Arapuni Road, a male was arrested while in the process of committing a burglary after being confronted by members of the public. We continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or offending as soon as possible. In Ōtorohanga, police arrested and charged a 33-year-old man who was wanted following a family harm incident. The man was taken into custody after breaching both a Protection Order and a Police Safety Order. A separate arrest was made in Ōtorohanga when police located a 33-year-old man who was wanted on an active warrant. The man had been avoiding police and initially attempted to hide inside a house. He came out without incident after becoming aware officers were entering the property. Emergency services attended a serious
crash on Barber Road, Ōtorohanga involving a two-wheeled farm vehicle and a car. Due to the severity of the injuries sustained, the rider was airlifted to hospital by rescue helicopter. Investigations into the circumstances of the crash remain ongoing. In Benneydale, police attended a family harm incident after reports that two people had been assaulted. A 48-year-old man was arrested and charged without incident. Police were alerted to several vehicle theft incidents over the weekend in Ōtorohanga. As a result of enquiries, a 17-year-old youth was located and apprehended. The youth has subsequently been remanded in custody. At the time of the arrest, the youth was already before the courts on multiple charges relating to offending that occurred outside the district. The youth is now facing a further eight charges, including: unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, unlawful interference with a motor vehicle, possession of instruments for vehicle conversion and possession of a knife. Police acknowledge the efforts of staff
involved in identifying and locating the youth and thank members of the public who provided information to assist enquiries. We remain committed to holding offenders accountable and reducing crime in our communities. In Te Kuiti, officers observed a vehicle failing to stop at a stop sign. After stopping the vehicle, Police discovered the driver was disqualified from driving and showed signs of recent alcohol consumption. The driver underwent evidential breath testing and returned a result of 790 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath, well above the legal limit. Further enquiries revealed the driver was also subject to bail conditions prohibiting them from operating a motor vehicle. The vehicle was impounded, and the driver was transported to Hamilton custody, where they faced further charges, including breaching bail conditions. As always, thank you for your continued support. Briefs… Stop and go
The Mangaorongo Bridge on State Highway 3, 7km north of Ōtorohanga, has been reduced to one lane with stop-go traffic management in place while work is carried out to repair one of the bridge piers. Work is expected to take up to two weeks.

The Conservation Department says the use of drones in the Tongariro area has produce informative results. Principal Ranger Dan Van Der Lubbe said Tongariro staff were impressed by the resolution of the drone cameras and “we were seeing small mammals in these surveys we didn’t expect to pick up, and it was a bit of an ‘aha’ moment”. A trial run detected 10 pairs of the native duck – who - and six single birds across 8km of the Whakapapa-iti River. “We’ve never been able to survey there before, so this is a game changer,” Van Der Lubbe said.
Kauri dieback
Waikato Regional Council says a 1200-year-old kauri on the Coromandel Peninsula has been infected with the pathogen which causes kauri dieback. It will be treated but may not survive. The council has carried out aerial surveillance across kauri lands in the region for 15 years.
Elections underway
Voting for Te Nehenehenui trustees is running until September 7. Two candidates are seeking election as Ngā Kura Tau trustee and 19 are chasing the six positions as Ngā Kura Rere trustees.
Reviewing the city limits The deadline has passed – some are in and others have elected not to put up a proposal. Mary Anne Gill looks at what is in store as local bodies prepare for their biggest shape up in more than 30 years.
Hamilton’s decision to step away from both the eastern and western local government reform proposals has exposed a question the Head Start process never properly answered: what constitutes a community of interest in the modern Waikato? For three months councils debated boundaries, governance models and representation, yet one of the region’s most significant shifts has received little attention. Towns such as Te Awamutu, Matamata, Morrinsville, Tokoroa, Te Kūiti, Ōtorohanga, Huntly and Ngāruawāhia remain distinct service centres with their own identities and economic drivers. Cambridge and Tamahere are different. The Waikato Expressway has brought Hamilton significantly closer while housing and industrial growth continues at pace. The New Zealand Racing Industry Centre is expected to attract further investment and development at Tamahere. Nearby, Hautapu has evolved from a rural fringe settlement into a significant industrial growth area whose workforce, freight links and businesses are increasingly connected to Hamilton. Waikato Hospital, Waikato University and the employment centres of Ruakura and Te Rapa attract workers from Cambridge and Tamahere every day. Crossing the city boundary has become part of everyday life. Work, education, shopping, healthcare and recreation increasingly occur across multiple local authority areas. The result is a metropolitan community that extends well beyond
Hamilton’s official boundary. Hamilton entered the reform process assuming discussion would largely centre on the metropolitan area. But when the focus moved to a broader river catchment model spanning several districts, Hamilton lost control of the agenda. Its response was to enter the
Government’s Back Stop process. Waitomo and Ōtorohanga pursued an approach focused on retaining local representation, Taupō chose not to submit a proposal. Thames-Coromandel, Hauraki and MatamataPiako continue exploring their own alignment based on shared interests.
Waikato MP Tim van de Molen has urged councils not to treat existing district boundaries as untouchable. He argues communities of interest should take precedence over historical administrative lines. The real question is not whether the Waikato adopts an eastern, western or metropolitan model. It is
whether decision makers are prepared to accept that not every part of a district shares the same interests or future. The Head Start process has produced multiple proposals but no regional consensus. What it has revealed are competing ideas about identity, representation and geography.
How it looks…
Waikato councils and their near neighbours did not settle on a single vision for local government reform. Instead, they split into five distinct camps based on geography, governance philosophy and appetite for change. 1. Western Waikato: a river catchment approach Waikato, Waipā and South Waikato districts backed the Western Waikato Unitary proposal. The model is built around governance of the Waikato River catchment and seeks to combine local and regional functions under a single authority. All three councils formally supported the proposal through the Head Start pathway. 2. King Country: local identity first Waitomo and Ōtorohanga district jointly submitted the King Country Future proposal. Their approach was based on Te Rohe Pōtae as a distinct community of interest and emphasised local representation and self-determination rather than joining a larger Waikato-wide structure. 3. Eastern Waikato: catchment-to-coast governance Thames-Coromandel,
Hauraki and MatamataPiako aligned behind the Waihou-Piako-Coromandel proposal. This model links inland catchments with the Coromandel coast and Hauraki Gulf, arguing that environmental, land-use and infrastructure decisions should be managed through one catchment-based authority. 4. The independents Two councils stood apart: Hamilton voted not to submit a Head Start proposal and entered the Government’s Backstop process, arguing there was insufficient evidence, financial information and public engagement to justify supporting any current option. Taupō also rejected the available options but stopped short of entering Backstop. Taupō opposed inclusion in the Western Waikato proposal, requested more time to explore alternatives and signalled interest in a future sub-regional arrangement with Waitomo, Ōtorohanga and Ruapehu if amalgamation became necessary. 5. Neighbouring councils influencing the debate
Rotorua supported participation in the Head Start process through a Bay of Plenty-wide model involving three separate unitary authorities, including a Central Rotorua authority.
Ruapehu decided not to submit a Head Start proposal and entered the Backstop process, citing the lack of a suitable partner proposal and concerns about the compressed timetable.

Forty four years ago I was inspired to plant more trees by a wonderful, aged gardener who showed me and my wife around his family’s property, and in particular, to a pear tree he had just planted, and was very proud of. Nothing special, except that the gardener was 92 years old, and he reckoned, that the pear tree would take seven years to produce much in the way of fruit. Even way back then, I had no choice, but to love his optimism. It’s a cliche now to say that the best time to plant a tree is today, and the second best time was some time ago. My wife and I were already tree planters, and I’d have to say that the hardest feature of moving from our first small property to a succession of larger ones was leaving the trees we had planted, and then established. Trees for fruit, trees for shade, and trees for timber in the future, will be our legacy I suppose, not that we ever had legacy in mind at the time. And while we were following our own path, that old man taught us a lot. I’m old now, not that old, but I bought more trees today to fill up gaps in the garden, to provide more flavour in meals, to beautify the place more, and hopefully, I’ll keep doing it every year until I can’t. We have made mistakes. It’s a hard case really, watching mistakes being made by well-intentioned folk who just couldn’t be bothered listening. So you don’t dwell on that, and keep digging. Wrong tree for the
big hills is a classic. Trees we planted in ignorance, to conserve the steep slopes was a cockup repeated every year. The trees we first planted here 30 years ago to save the hillsides from slipping away are now causing the very slipping they were planted to stop. Poplars we planted for erosion control, the same. With hindsight, what we should have done is to have pruned them like a plantation pine tree, and cut them down before they got too big. Now they too, drag the hills down. We will be better in the future. On the positive side, plant things that like the place you live in, and don’t stress too much about difficult stuff . Magnolias do really well in our climate, so we have 20-plus different ones, which give us so much pleasure in the spring and make the failures seem less important. It’s only late frosts that are a threat - to them and to farming really, and I don’t suppose it’s worth my while pointing out that we had more late frosts under a Labour government. And now another election is upon us, so I will have to stop being frivolous, and offer some serious, thoughtful comments, and critique, and I will. I’m just not sure I can be bothered until another 10 beautiful trees go in the ground tomorrow, once the frost lifts, and I feel uplifted again.

A win win for the Steelers By Dan Tasker
The Tahāroa Steelers Rugby League Club has done the double. Both the men’s and women’s teams of the coast club took out their respective Waikato senior A and premier rugby league finals in Huntly over the weekend, in one of the great moments in the club’s history. Apart from a couple of wobbles through the second half, the Steelers men controlled Saturday’s senior A final against the Hauraki
Tigers from start to finish to win 36-26 victors at Davies Park. The following day at the same venue, the Steelers women chased down Taniwharau on the home straight to win the premier women’s final 14-8. Men’s captain Rob Tiananga and women’s co-captain Manaia Willison summed up the joy of winning for each other and Tahāroa village, who came out to support them. “I’m feeling overwhelmed, grateful for what we’ve done over

our campaign,” Tiananga said. “This is for us, this is for us and our whānau and I’m so happy.” The two finals were like two tales with different journeys but the same ending – the men bouncing out to a big lead and seeing it through, while the women hung tough early to fight their way back to eventually get the job done. At the heart of the Steeler men’s result were their halves pairing of halfback Raiki Willison and fiveeighth Ifor Jones, who pulled the strings in the critical moments to at one stage see them lead 34-4. Locked at 4-4 after the first quarter, Tahāroa began turning the screws on Hauraki, first through an 80-metre intercept try to Jones, followed by a try to second-rower Te Oru Te Huia and a double to Willison to lead 28-4 at half-time. A try to Sam Trangmar early in the second half and the game looked as good as Tahāroa’s, but Hauraki had other thoughts, posting 22 points in the last half an hour. In the women’s final, the Steelers were initially locked in an armwrestle until Taniwharau slowly gained some ascendancy through tries out wide to fullback Dilhon Katyal and wing Te Wai Hei Tamauru Samson to give them an 8-0 lead after 26 minutes. But right when Taniwharau looked like they would head into the break with momentum, Tahāroa rode down the field on

Into the second half and Tahāroa found themselves leading 10-8 through a try to centre Janaya King-Rewi in the 56th minute. In the championship-defining moment Tahāroa fullback and the final’s MVP Niu Milo made a beautiful linebreak, before being tackled just inside her attacking half. A quick play from halfback Maria Muraahi saw her link with five-eighth Nuveia Morgan-Te
Uira running from depth to break the line and Taniwharau hearts, to score a crucial try. In the dying moments, Taniwharau pressured the Steelers’ defence leading to a yellow card for Grace Houpapa-Barrett for repeated infringements, but a Taniwharau knock-on just metres from the try-line was enough for the Tahāroa girls, affectionately known as the ‘Shielas’, to take the championship. Stand-out performances in the women’s final included Milo, KingRewi and Sina Hetet for Tahāroa.

I’ve just come home from a month in the Canary Islands, where I spent several weeks with students unpacking a question that doesn’t get asked nearly enough: what happens to the tourists when a volcano erupts? Residents, in theory though not often in practice, have plans. They know the roads, the authorities, and hopefully the neighbours who’ll bang on their door. Tourists have none of that, and often have an added language barrier. As a tourist you may not know who the official agencies are, what they’re telling you, or where to find good information in a world of misinformation. Take out the electricity and the phone networks on top of that, and a visitor can go from mildly inconvenienced to genuinely vulnerable. To understand what could be done to help them, we first had to understand their situation. Then I came home and Dad and I watched the Christchurch earthquake documentary “Tell the people they’re alone for the next 24 hours”. Interviews are woven through recreations, and it doesn’t hold back. The stories are the ones you would expect: harrowing, full of suffering, and people showing up for each other in the thick of it. Watching this did what it always does for me: sent me straight back to my own preparedness. I live in Wellington. I know this could be the next Christchurch scenario. I know that a big one might hit in my lifetime, or it might not. What I can control is whether or not I’ve
done the work of being ready for it, bit by bit. So I sat down and went through everything I’ve built up over the past few months as I’ve written about before, and asked myself, again, what am I still missing? On my updated list are some practical easy wins: a torch right by the bed, goggles that will actually fit over my glasses in case I need to sift through debris, a backup way to make water safe to drink. But the bit I keep coming back to isn’t a thing you can buy. I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), which for me means chronic pain and fatigue are simply part of life. What would each of us specifically need and how could we support each other through it, not just survive it alone? It is up to us to build our own community. Whether tourists on a volcanic island or newcomers to a city surrounded by faults, taking the time to think about our situation and ask ourselves what are our vulnerabilities is a solid first step. From there, we can start figuring out how to band together, an important part of the harrowing journey from disaster to recovery.

There’s nothing like sweet revenge to motivate a team - and the King Country Rams have it in spades as they kick-off their Heartland Championship campaign on Saturday. The Rams will make the trek south to face Horowhenua-Kapiti at the Levin Domain in a match that will double as a Bill Osborne Taonga challenge. King Country carried the Bill Osborne Taonga, the Ranfurly Shield of Heartland rugby, into 2025, but after beating Poverty Bay in their first defence of the year, conceded it to Horowhenua-Kapiti 46-36 in Te Kūiti. If there was ever a way to set the season alight in week one, Rams head coach Aarin Dunster admitted winning back the Bill Osborne would do the trick. “We’re pretty excited about it, we get a bit of redemption, I guess. We’re really looking forward to it and excited about playing for that Bill Osborne,” Dunster said. “We’re obviously disappointed about losing it. It’s quite exciting, the boys are looking forward to going down and challenging for it straight away,” he said. If they are to win back the Bill Osborne, it will also become the first opening-round victory for the Rams in four years, since beating Poverty Bay at King Country Rugby’s centenary weekend in 2022 in Te Kūiti. The Rams start the campaign with only one pre-season hit-out against the New
Zealand Barbarians on August 1, going down 53-33 after their annual clash against Taranaki Māori was cancelled due to the Awakino Gorge road being closed. It’s not the ideal preparation, Dunster admits, but it hasn’t deterred the Rams from working hard as they pull together for the campaign ahead. A couple of familiar faces will be missing from recent years, with NZ Heartland players Kaleb Foote and Tom Ryan unavailable along with Districts captain Leveson Gower. Returning after a year off are Taupō Sports flanker Karney Dunster and Districts outside back Styris Harland, while former Chiefs U20 first five Hone Mathieson returned home from Taranaki midway through the club season and will likely start at 10. In the loan department, utility back Patrick Hedley returns after a championshipwinning Waikato club season with the Hautapu premiers, while Te Awamutu’s Hemi Gardiner (prop) and Tairoa Crean (midfield) made their Rams debuts against the Barbarians. Heading into his fourth season as head coach, Dunster believes unifying the Rams for the journey ahead is the best path for success, but they must start well. “It’s the team that gets the best cohesion the quickest, they get a bit of a head start. That’s what we’re looking for, is to gel and get a good start to the season,” Dunster said.

Winter veggies – it’s not too late to plant As the temperatures drop and the soil cools, many assume it’s time to pack away the tools and wait for spring. While growth certainly slows over winter, there are still plenty of vegetables that thrive during the colder months and can keep your kitchen stocked with fresh produce. Winter gardening is less about rapid growth and more about choosing crops that enjoy cooler conditions. Many vegetables actually taste sweeter after a frost as they convert starches into sugars to protect themselves from the cold. Leafy greens are some of the best performers through winter. Spinach, silverbeet, kale, perpetual spinach, rocket, and winter lettuces will continue producing fresh leaves for months. These crops are easy to grow and can be harvested little and often, making them ideal for small gardens. Now is also a great time to plant members of the onion family. Garlic, shallots (pictured), spring onions, and onion seedlings all establish well in winter and reward patient gardeners with excellent harvests later in the year. For those wanting to make the most of their vegetable beds, broad beans are a winter favourite. They tolerate cold weather, improve soil health by fixing nitrogen, and provide one of the earliest spring harvests. Peas can also be grown in sheltered sunny positions. Root vegetables such as beetroot, carrots, radishes, turnips, and parsnips can still be planted, although they may take a little longer to mature than they would during warmer months. If you’re planting brassicas such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, or Brussels sprouts, choose seedlings rather than sowing seed directly. The plants establish faster and are more likely to produce a successful crop before spring arrives.
To give winter vegetables the best chance of success, enrich the soil with compost before planting, adding Sheep pellets into the planting hole, choose the sunniest spot available, and protect young seedlings from heavy frosts if necessary. Growth may be slower, but a productive winter garden is still very achievable. Winter is also a wonderful time to include edible flowers and herbs among your vegetables. Calendulas, violas, parsley, chives, and coriander not only add colour to the garden but can also find their way onto the dinner plate. A winter garden may not be as abundant as a summer one, but there is something incredibly satisfying about harvesting fresh greens and vegetables on a cold morning when little else is growing. With a little planning now, you’ll be rewarded with healthy harvests right through to spring.

Notice of herbicide spraying Waikato Regional Council advises that under Resource Consent 124871 spraying of pest plants growing in aquatic and semi-aquatic locations will continue over the next three months.
