Bringing together leading Anglophone and Japanese scholars in three landmark volumes, The New Cambridge History of Japan offers an expansive vision of the archipelago’s history from c.500 to the twenty-first century. With an emphasis on the porousness of Japan’s boundaries, it embraces a more global perspective than that of the original Cambridge History, published a generation ago. Its analyses of gender, the environment, and urban life enrich our understanding of political, social, and cultural history. Volume I, Premodern Japan in East Asia, traces the archipelago’s history from c.500 to the late sixteenth century. Volume II, Early Modern Japan in Asia and the World carries the narrative into the late nineteenth century. The third volume, The Modern Japanese Nation and Empire, brings the story into the twenty-first century. The essays throughout are written in accessible, authoritative prose for a diverse, global audience ranging from specialists to students and all those interested in Japan’s rich history.

#OAWeek

Cambridge University Press leads open transformation Half of our journals and threequarters of research articles are now publishing open access

International Open Access Week

A real transformative agreement, delivering real change

19–25 October 2026 is International Open Access Week, an opportunity to continue to learn about the benefits of open access and inspire colleagues to participate in the global sharing of knowledge. This year’s theme “The cost of knowledge” explores the financial barriers that can limit access to research and the opportunities to create more equitable systems.

Since 2017, Cambridge University Press has been pursuing one of the most ambitious open access (OA) transformations in scholarly publishing: moving a large, high-quality, society-linked and discipline-spanning journals programme, with particular depth in the humanities and social sciences, from a historic subscription model toward OA.

This Open Access Week, we’re spotlighting Cambridge’s leadership in transforming academic publishing. With a growing proportion of research now published open access, Cambridge is helping to remove barriers to knowledge and ensure research can be accessed by anyone, anywhere.

The driver of our progress is our collectively funded transformative agreement (TA) model, with global support from our societies, library partners and consortia. We recognise that some TAs are criticised for perpetuating hybrid publishing. However, our approach is demonstrably different as it actively supports the transition of our journal portfolio to almost entirely open access.

4

O P E N T R A N S F O R M AT I O N

“Sustainable OA isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon run together with libraries, funders and societies in support of the research communities we all serve. Today’s milestone proves that deliberate, collective action works for all concerned. It’s good business, the right thing to do – and common sense. As a sector, we must move beyond polarisation to make transformation happen.” Chris Bennett Global Commercial Director, Cambridge University Press

50%

of Cambridge journals are now fully open access.

75%

of research articles projected to publish open access in 2026. Over the past five years, this strategy has propelled the share of Cambridge research published OA far beyond that achieved by any major legacy publisher whose journal programme originated under the subscription model.

What’s next? We remain committed to open: defaultopen, collectively funded, and equitable by design, building an OA ecosystem the scholarly community can rely on for the long term. Our next wave of journals flips will be announced soon, including eighteen titles across law, linguistics, life science, and public health. We share funders and librarians’ view that open access only succeeds if everyone can participate, and that equity is embedded in how we evaluate the progress of our transformation to open.

Flipping the traditional publishing model upside down

What is Flip it Open? Flip it Open is a Cambridge University Press programme which aims to sustainably fund open access to over 100 book titles through existing purchasing habits. Once the titles meet a set revenue threshold, we have committed to making them available as open access on Cambridge Core, as well as affordable paperbacks. By making books open access in response to them being purchased early in their life, we are flipping the traditional publishing model upside down.

Explore recently flipped and about to flip titles The Flip it Open pilot included 28 titles across HSS subjects and its success has led us to continue with the programme on an ongoing basis, with over 120 titles flipped. As we always make it clear to all that the purchased titles are part of the project, it is our customers’ buying habits and the simple process of flipping the titles that determine the success and sustainability of Flip it Open. Explore our recently flipped titles, as well as forthcoming titles to the programme, on the next page. cambridge.org/core/services/flip-it-open

“Professor Shamshad Pasarlay has drawn on an extensive range of existing and untapped archives, and blended the fruit of that work with a sophisticated analytic model of constitutional stability. The resulting work excels by offering not just a definitive constitutional history of Afghanistan, but a fresh and thought provoking argument about how legal order can emerge from social diversity and conflict. This is much needed work, not just for Afghanistan given its parlous state, but for comparative constitutional scholars more generally. It could not be more timely or necessary.” Aziz Z. Huq, Frank and Bernice J. Greenberg Professor of Law, The University of Chicago “This book provides a compelling account of Afghanistan’s constitutional history and advances an innovative model of coordination through deliberately incomplete constitutions in deeply divided societies. Combining deep expertise in Afghan constitutionalism with comparative constitutional insights, Shamshad Pasarlay offers a readable, persuasive, and thought-provoking framework of wide relevance. I recommend it highly.” Cheryl Saunders, Professor of Law at the Melbourne Law School

“This extraordinary book provides us with the most detailed and informative account to date of Afghanistan’s surprisingly rich constitutional history. It demonstrates that the people who drafted Afghanistan’s constitutions over the years thought deeply about the governance challenges facing states with populations that are divided along tribal, linguistic and religious lines. Describing different Afghan constitutions and exploring their different levels of success, Dr. Pasarlay proposes a new approach to creating constitutions that can promote stable, responsive, popularly legitimate government. This book will be of great interest to historians, political scientists, legal academics and policy makers.” Clark B. This advanced undergraduate textbook provides a thoroughly modern overview of plate tectonics and is the perfect resource for a capstone course for geology majors. It presents plate tectonics as a multifaceted and interdisciplinary theory that unites many different geological observations and processes into a unique and harmonious model, so that readers grasp how the outer part of our planet works in relation to the deep interior. Supported by clear prose, helpful analogies, and stunning color imagery, readers will gain an in-depth understanding of how and why plates interact to produce different topography, rock assemblages, and deformation features along plate boundaries.

In its fourth edition, Play in the Early Years has been thoroughly updated in line with the revised Early Years Learning Framework and the new version of the Australian Curriculum. It takes both a both a theoretical and a practical approach, and covers recent research into conceptual play and wellbeing, illustrated by a range of updated images. The text looks at social, cultural and institutional approaches to play, and explores a range of strategies for successfully integrating play into early years settings and primary classrooms. Each chapter features case studies and play examples, with questions and reflection activities incorporated throughout to enhance learners’ understanding.

LECTURES ON THEORETICAL PHYSICS The universe we live in is both strange and interesting. This strangeness comes about because, at the most fundamental level, the universe is governed by the laws of quantum mechanics. This is the most spectacularly accurate and powerful theory ever devised, one that has given us insights into many aspects of the world, from the structure of matter to the meaning of information. This textbook provides a comprehensive account of all things quantum. It starts by introducing the wavefunction and its interpretation as an ephemeral wave of complex probability, before delving into the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics and exploring its diverse applications, from atomic physics and scattering, to quantum computing. Designed to be accessible, this volume is suitable for both students and researchers, beginning with the basics before progressing to more advanced topics.

Disproving the myth that mathematics must be challenging, the authors present the subject as accessible, engaging and fun. Supporting all educators, including those who may lack confidence in their mathematical ability, the book is rich with images that clarify concepts and is closely aligned with the latest version of the Australian Curriculum. The book connects theory to practice by highlighting the importance of mathematics in real-world contexts, integrating current research with practical activities to support effective classroom teaching. Chapters are organised into four modules: building understanding; developing mathematical proficiency; thinking and working mathematically with the Australian Curriculum content strands; and developing teacher and student identity in a mathematical world.
