Impact of Giving 2024

Camberwell Grammar School acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land on which we work, learn and play: the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to all First Nations Elders, past and present and express our gratitude for their continued willingness to guide us on our reconciliation journey.

 Message From

the Principal and the Foundation President

We are delighted to share with you our 2024 Impact of Giving Report, which highlights some of the notable achievements accomplished in 2024 through the work of our Foundation and the generous support of our community.

Some Highlights of the 2024 Year:

An absolute highlight of the year was the launch of the David de Kretser Scholarships program. These equity scholarships will provide a CGS education to those who would not otherwise have the opportunity. These scholarships will transform the lives of the recipients and their families, with the impact being felt across our community and beyond. We aim to support up to two new eligible students each year, with the scholarship covering their entire secondary education. You can read more about these scholarships and their impact on the following pages.

In June, the CGS Foundation and the Old Camberwell Grammarians Association (OCGA) together hosted the Roystead Society and Gallery of Achievement Dinner. This annual dinner is a wonderful occasion to celebrate the achievements of some of Camberwell Grammar’s most accomplished alumni, as well as celebrate the generosity of our Roystead Bequest Society members. Bequests from past staff, alumni and CGS families continue to form a significant component of the Foundation’s income, and due to the larger amounts received, these bequests often have a transformational impact.

In August, the Community and Development Office organised the OCGA Annual Dinner at The Langham, which was well attended by alumni ranging from the 1950s through to the 2020s. The dinner brought together over 100 alumni and staff, providing many alumni with an opportunity to reconnect and to farewell Headmaster Dr Paul Hicks.

In September, the CGS community celebrated the life of our much-beloved teacher, Ian Mason, who passed away in July at the age of 92. Ian taught several generations of boys at CGS over the course of 54 years, commencing in 1959 and finally retiring in 2013. More than 250 people attended the memorial service and reminisced over light refreshments afterwards – a fitting tribute. Ian was a longtime member of the Roystead Society, and we understand that he has left part of his estate to the Foundation for scholarships.

Also in September, the Foundation hosted postconcert drinks and canapes for key donors and supporters at the conclusion of the wonderful Hamer Hall Biennial Concert. A number of current and immediate past parent donors enjoyed celebrating the success of the concert together with key Music School staff.

In November and December, we farewelled Dr Paul Hicks, who had taught at CGS for six years as Head of History (1991-1996) before serving as Headmaster from 2005-2024. Paul was only our ninth Headmaster since CGS was established in 1886, and he has left a lasting impact on the School, having led the most ambitious building redevelopment plan ever undertaken. Paul was also a great supporter of music and played in the orchestra. He also oversaw the School moving to operate on 100% renewable energy, all while academic results stayed as strong as ever. But perhaps most notable was the development of a kinder, gentler, more inclusive and compassionate culture where every boy is encouraged to take risks, give it a go, and is supported to reach their potential.

Alumni Reunions

Alumni or Old Boys continue to play a very big part in the CGS community and 2024 was another busy year for alumni reunions. Some highlights included:

• The 30-Year reunion for the Class of 1994 in June.

• The 40-Year reunion for the Class of 1984, in October.

• 20 and 10-Year reunions for the Classes of 2004 and 2014.

• Well attended interstate reunions held in Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth.

• Sit-down lunches in the Camberwell Room for the 50+ and 60+ Year reunions.

It is always wonderful to see alumni joyfully reconnecting with each other and with their former teachers. A steadily growing number of alumni have sons at CGS or have enrolled their sons, and the Foundation is also very appreciative of the growing number of alumni who are counted as amongst the most generous donors to the School.

Thank You For Your Support!

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who supported the CGS Foundation in 2024. A full list of all donors is set out in the following pages of this report, and we encourage all those in the CGS community who have the means to do so to please continue to support the Foundation. The impact of your donations and support is helping to transform the School facilities and the lives of those impacted by prizes, scholarships and the diversity they bring to our community.

Finally, we hope you enjoy the new, shorter, easier-to-read format of this report, which is designed to be accessible to a much wider audience. For those who wish to still review the much more detailed audited financial statements, these will continue to be available on the ACNC website and through the Community and Development Office. As always, we welcome your feedback and ideas and look forward to your continued support.

With thanks,

Ben

Associate Prof

Doug Brown AM (1962) has been part of the CGS community since he commenced in Form 1 (Year 7) in 1956. In 1962, he was appointed School  Captain.

Doug went on to study medicine at Monash University and in 1968 married life-partner Treena, a nurse.

Doug worked in the spinal cord injury field for almost 40 years and was appointed Director of the Spinal Injuries Unit at the Austin Hospital in 1982. Doug’s expertise soon led to international work, including a challenging 3-month stint with the Red Cross in Armenia following the devastating 1988 earthquake. Doug later served as President of the International Spinal Cord Society and co-founded the Spinal Research Institute in Melbourne in 2011.

Doug and Treena had four sons, all of whom attended CGS – Iain (1987), James (1990), Cameron (1992), and Edward (1997). Their grandson Campbell (2019) also attended CGS, marking three generations of the family’s close ties to CGS.

Doug was inducted into the CGS Gallery of Achievement in 2013, and in 2021, Doug was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in recognition of his significant service to medicine, particularly to spinal cord injuries.

Today, Doug and Treena are Trustees of the CGS Foundation, and they have been steady donors for nearly 40 years. Whilst they have supported both the Building Fund and the Scholarship Fund over the years, it is the new David de Kretser Scholarships program that they are most excited about. “Our family has benefitted from all that a CGS education offers. We’re delighted to support CGS in providing transformative educational opportunities to those who otherwise couldn’t afford them”.

Mrs CiCi Pan – Originally from Shanghai, Cici and her husband Barry moved to Australia in 1989. An accountant by training, Cici has always really valued education, and enrolled her son Nelson Zhao (2017 School Captain) at CGS from Pre-Prep. Aside from knowing that Nelson would get a great education at CGS, she figured that he would also make lifelong friends among his classmates.

Through her own close involvement with CGS over the last two decades, Cici has also formed lasting friendships with other parents, particularly with Maggie Tan, mother of Nelson’s classmate Edward Tan (2017).

Cici and Barry have been steady donors to CGS right from 2004, and in 2025, they became Fellows of the CGS Foundation.

While her son Nelson has recently completed his Juris Doctor degree and moved to Sydney to take up employment with a Sydney-based law firm, Cici continues to stay in touch.

Cici encourages past parents to stay in touch by attending CGS events (concerts, musicals, Open Day, etc.). As Cici says, “CGS has been an important part of my family’s life for over two decades now. I’ve really appreciated all the opportunities available to all the CGS boys, and the lifelong concern for them as they go through University, seek out their first jobs, and work and grow their networks not just in Melbourne but in other cities across Australia and around the globe. It’s wonderful for both the parents and the boys to be part of such a welcoming and caring School family”.

The David de Kretser Scholarships Program

Making a Difference – one student at a time

As a school, we are embarking on an ambitious campaign to raise 10 million dollars to expand our current needs-based scholarship program. The scholarships aim to provide opportunities to students with potential who would otherwise be unable to afford the transformative education experience only possible at a school like Camberwell Grammar School.

We are proud to name these scholarships in honour of one of our most illustrious alumni – The Hon. David de Kretser AC FAA FTSE FAHMS, who served as the 27th Governor of Victoria. You can read more below about David’s life and some of his many achievements, which we hope will provide a measure of inspiration to our David de Kretser Scholarship recipients.

About David de Kretser

David de Kretser (1956) migrated to Australia from Sri Lanka as a young student aged nine and joined Camberwell Grammar School in 1951.

David made the most of every opportunity to involve himself in the life of the School and demonstrated both sporting and academic prowess. He went on to complete Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degrees at the University of Melbourne in 1962 and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Monash University in 1969.

David began working at Monash University in 1965 in the Department of Anatomy and was a Senior Fellow of Endocrinology at the University of Washington in Seattle from 1969 to 1971. From 1991-1999, Prof. de Kretser worked as the foundation Director of

the Institute of Reproduction and Development at Monash University. In 2001, he was appointed Director of the Australian Centre for Excellence in Male Reproductive Health. He later served as Associate Dean, Biotechnology Development in the Faculty of Medicine at Monash University.

As well as being a highly regarded doctor, scientist, and teacher, David was a member of many national and international committees, editorial boards, and medical societies. He presented at medical conferences all over the world and is a widely published author. David was awarded an Order of Australia (AO) in 2000 for services to medicine, particularly in the field of male reproductive biology and as a researcher, educator and university administrator.

Prof. de Kretser served two terms on the Camberwell Grammar School Council, between 1979 and 1983 and again between 2003 and 2006. He and his wife Jan have always been passionate supporters of the School and their four sons were all educated at CGS.

In 2001, Prof. de Kretser was named Victoria’s “Father of the Year” and in 2006, he was appointed Governor of Victoria, a position he held until 2011.

The David de Kretser Scholarships in 2024

Launched in 2024, there are currently three students on David de Kretser Scholarships, and by the end of 2024, the CGS Foundation had raised just under $3m, sufficient to offer two more scholarships in 2025 while also continuing to steadily fundraise and grow the scholarship corpus. The School intends to offer up to two David de Kretser Scholarships per annum in the immediate term.

The scholarships cover school fees, uniform, laptop, textbooks, music lessons and participation in school camps and excursions so that recipients can participate in the full life of the school.

The scholarships are being promoted through a variety of partner organisations, including via primary schools, indigenous / Koorie engagement support officers, Anglicare Victoria, and several refugee support agencies.

 Changed Trajectory

Farid Asghari (2015)

Farid Asghari was an orphan living with his brother and his uncle’s family when he escaped from war-torn Afghanistan and made his way to an Indonesian refugee camp, where he spent six months as an unaccompanied minor.

In 2012, Farid made a perilous journey to Australia on an overcrowded boat packed with some 160 refugees, with very limited food, no proper bathroom facilities and nowhere to sleep. The journey was the stuff of nightmares. At one point, Farid tied himself to a beam so that he could try to get some sleep.

Farid was one of the lucky ones – and his boat was met at sea by Australian officials who took them safely to shore. Sadly, some of the other boys he

had roomed with in Indonesia were not so lucky and several drowned on their own attempted boat journey to Christmas Island.

Initially housed in community detention in Traralgon, Farid began attending Traralgon College as his first Australian school. It was while volunteering for the Salvation Army in the aftermath of the Hazelwood mine fire that Farid met Boolarra resident Jennifer Dentoom. After getting to know each other through numerous shared meals together, Ms Dentoom, a mother of four, took on guardianship of Farid. The family later moved to Kew and needed to find a new school for Farid.

Photo: Farid Asghari (2015), Dorset House, Camberwell Grammar, 2023.

Around this time, Farid had the opportunity, through Powerhouse, to attend Lord Somers Camp, where he met CGS old boy Matt Bowker (1990), a group leader at the camp, and CGS teacher Roger Devine. Farid and his Aussie Mum, Jennifer, got talking with them about schools near Kew as she picked up Farid, and soon an interview was set up with the School’s Headmaster at the time, Dr Paul Hicks. Recognising the need and the opportunity to assist, the CGS community welcomed Farid, who spent 2015 studying Year 12 at CGS on scholarship.

Farid still can’t quite believe his luck in Australia. While studying at CGS was a challenging year, he got through with much support from his teachers and classmates and took advantage of every opportunity that presented itself. He made many friends and connections along the way, enabling him to improve his English and many other life skills.

After leaving school, Farid worked for two and a half years at ANZ Bank before establishing his own successful business – FA Tiling Group – which he has been running for seven years now.

Farid has also been a passionate advocate for Australia to accept and embrace refugees and has held roles such as Victorian Refugee Network convenor for Amnesty International Australia. He is delighted that the School’s David de Kretser Scholarship program, established in 2024, will offer opportunities for boys from refugee families.

Looking back now, Farid says, “So many people helped me on my journey to where I am today. My Aussie parents, my teachers, generous donors who help fund scholarships, classmates and CGS alumni. I’m very grateful for all the support I have received and truly hope that CGS and the whole school community will continue to welcome boys from refugee backgrounds to get a great education and a good start in life. It has meant so much to me”.

Impacting Indigenous Lives

Glen is a Gomeroi man who grew up on country in northern NSW. He has enjoyed a really broad career with such a range of roles and experiences, that it’s hard to fit into a neat narrative.

As a young man, he excelled at sport and was a professional rugby league player, for the Canberra Raiders. Whilst living in Canberra, he also completed a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Canberra. He later worked as a senior political advisor to leading Aboriginal activist, Dr Charles Perkins, where he was responsible for the coordination of a range of community, corporate and political programs and activities involving social justice issues for Indigenous Australians.

Glen later served as National Manager of the Indigenous Sport Program at the Australian Sports Commission, before working for more than 13 years in a range of senior roles at National Australia Bank. Whilst at NAB, Glen completed an MBA at Melbourne Business School. He joined KPMG as Lead Partner, Indigenous Services in 2020.

Glen’s eldest two sons Garnet (2021) and Wyatt (2022), have both graduated from CGS and are studying Commerce at Melbourne University. His youngest son, Atticus, is still completing Senior School at CGS. Glen has been actively involved in supporting CGS to establish a Reconciliation Action Plan and to build links into indigenous communities.

As a measure of his gratitude for the great educational experience his sons have received throughout their years at Camberwell Grammar, Glen recently became a confirmed bequestor, saying that: “When the time comes, I’ll definitely be giving back to Camberwell Grammar. It’s been a terrific school for my sons, who have all grown into wonderful young men, and our family is keen to make a contribution to support further indigenous families, to help them also afford an education at CGS and all that the School offers”.

The Parents’ ssociation Make an Impact

At an afternoon tea to thank our parent volunteers, approximately 25 volunteers from various CGS parent groups were thanked for their volunteer work throughout the year by then-Headmaster, Dr Paul Hicks and Head of Community and Development, Mr Ryan Whitehead. The event was held amongst the beautiful collection of donated artwork that forms the Xipell Collection in Dorset House.

Dr Kath Lok, President of the Parents’ Association, took the opportunity to present the CGS Foundation with a cheque for $100,000 in support of the David de Kretser equity scholarships program. These needs-based scholarships provide opportunities to students with potential, who would otherwise be unable to afford the transformational education only possible at a school like Camberwell Grammar School. The scholarships are named after David de Kretser (1956) who had a distinguished career in medical research, served two terms on the School Council and was Governor of Victoria (2006-2011).

In 2025, the CGS Foundation is supporting three students in the Senior School who are studying on David de Kretser Scholarships. The scholarships cover all school fees, uniforms, computers and some excursions, such as school camps.

Dr Lok noted that ‘the $100,000 donation was raised from surpluses from events organised by various parent groups over the last couple of years, including Open Day stalls and Friends of Groups. The Parents’ Association encourages all parents, both current and past, to join us in donating to support these scholarships, if you can. We can see the life-changing impact of these scholarships on the boys right in front of us, every day.’

bout the Foundation

The CGS Foundation Ltd is a stand-alone Foundation incorporated in 1985 and registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). The Foundation aims to raise funds from our community for the support of Camberwell Grammar School and works closely with the School Executive to apply the funds where they will best serve the School as well as the donor’s intended purpose (e.g. Scholarships, buildings and facilities, etc.). The Foundation also stewards and invests the Foundation’s modest corpus to ensure sustainable funding for multi-year activities, including scholarship programs, annual prizes, and master plans for building projects.

The Foundation Board is comprised of up to seven volunteer directors, with additional volunteers forming the Investment and Fundraising Committees. The day-to-day work of the Foundation is supported by the School’s Community and Development Office.

Thank you

On behalf of the Camberwell Grammar School Foundation, we thank each and every one of our generous donors in 2024.

Your donations and support are having a transformational impact, whether through helping improve and keep our facilities up to date, which are used by students, staff, alumni, and the broader community, or through providing educational opportunities to students who would otherwise not have the opportunity provided by a CGS education.

The CGS Foundation is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) and provides detailed audited annual financial reports, which are available online at www.acnc.gov.au

The CGS Foundation is registered with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. Accordingly, donations to our Building Fund and our Scholarship Fund are tax-deductible.

If you are considering making a donation to the CGS Foundation, you can do this online via our website at: www.cgs.vic.edu.au/donations or if you would like to discuss making a donation, or have any questions, please contact either:
