A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Welcome to our Biennial Concert for 2026. While I have had the privilege of enjoying this spectacular event over the past five years during my time at Camberwell Grammar, tonight marks a very special milestone for me as I attend my first Biennial Concert as Principal. I still vividly remember my introduction to this tradition; I was astounded by the enthusiasm, passion and commitment of our students. The first time I heard our massed singing, and experienced the performance of the Anthem from Chess, I was deeply moved. This powerful tradition has become a true cornerstone of our school culture, and it will no doubt be a crowning highlight of tonight’s performance. Music is woven into the fabric of our School; it is an essential part of the experience of every student who walks through our gates. It gives our students a language to express themselves, collaborate with their peers and is an avenue for both challenge and exploration. Tonight’s program beautifully reflects the remarkable musical journey our students undertake. An event of this magnitude demands exceptional planning and countless hours of preparation. I want to extend my deepest gratitude to our extraordinary music staff, whose dedication to our students over a sustained period is unparalleled. In more recent years, the Music Academy has also done brilliant work in taking our most talented students to even greater heights. This evening carries a special significance for our Music Department, as it marks the final Biennial Concert as Head of Music for Mr Ben Bishop, who concludes an exceptional 11year tenure of leadership at our School. Building on the proud traditions of his predecessors, Ben and his wonderful team have inspired our boys to stretch their boundaries and elevate their musicianship. Ben's vision has fostered a genuine, lifelong love of music-making in our students, and we owe him an immense debt of gratitude for his outstanding service and legacy. I want to particularly acknowledge the contributions of our Year 12 musicians, which includes the entire Year 12 cohort who join in the massed singing tonight. For them, this concert represents the culmination of their musical journey at our School. Thank you to everyone who has worked tirelessly to bring this evening to life. Enjoy the concert! Ben Jeacocke

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF MUSIC Music is for everyone. From all the performers on the stage and down in the stalls, it is our wish
that you find yourself thinking about something you heard tonight for a long time to come, and that something in our concert speaks to you. It could be a melody, a turn of phrase, or ‘that sound’ of
over 1000 Camberwell Grammar Students singing together; something that is never truly captured outside the live experience.
Tonight, as always, we invite all past staff and students to stand and sing our traditional school songs with us. We know that you remember the words, and we’d love to add your voices to ours. In
addition, I would like to invite everyone to sing tonight, whenever you feel moved to do so, because
music is a collective experience. We have such a magnificent opportunity tonight to connect and
meet as a group of over 2000 people, in an amazing space, in song. The words are printed here, for us all.
We are delighted to be celebrating 140 years of Music at Camberwell Grammar School tonight.
To mark the occasion, we ran a competition for students to write a special third verse of the traditional ‘Forty Years On’ with the title ‘One Hundred and Forty Years On’, to be sung tonight only to celebrate our school’s 140th year. Congratulations to Bertie Atkin (Year 10) for writing the winning verse, which we have enjoyed preparing for tonight. This concert also marks the 40th anniversary of the first ‘Concert Hall’ concert held in 1986. We put all of the songs that Camberwell Grammarians have sung in the past forty years to a vote for students and staff earlier this year. They voted overwhelmingly to sing ‘Africa’ (from 2018) and ‘Rolling In The Deep’ (from 2016), hence their inclusion tonight. Throughout the printed program you’ll see notes from our school historian Dr David Bird, which provide insight into what was happening at our School when this music was first written or released. We hope these notes add some extra context to these items.
Finally, my message to every person in this room, or watching online, is to be courageous and find a way to keep making music in your life for as long as possible. The benefits of participating in
music (particularly group singing) are now irrefutable and well documented for our mental health, social wellbeing and neurological development. To ignore its positive impact on our human form
is on a similar level to foregoing the benefits of exercise, diet or friendship. We are so incredibly fortunate to exist in a community that comes together to sing, play and create music together.
Thank you to everyone who has supported a student, past student or staff member to be here tonight. On a personal note, thank you to everyone who has supported me to have the honour of
standing in the middle of it all for the past 11 years, particularly to my wife and family, who have been there for every bar of every piece of music along the way. To all students, staff and the School
community, I appreciate your support so much and I am so grateful, more than you could ever know. This concert is for you. Ben Bishop Head of Music 2016 - 2026

Thomas Klebanowski, Captain of Music
Where the Southern Cross by night shines overhead, On the hill that looks down towards the golden west, In the gleaming glance of sunlight nearly fled, Stands the School that we shall always love the best. In our classrooms and the playground’s happy hour, Our guide shall always be the “golden rule”, And we’ll look on one another, As a comrade and a brother, And we’ll ne’er forget the happy days at school. Chorus Oh, Camberwell Grammar Boys in the fight, Be steady and play the game; Boldly striving with all your might To keep unsullied our name, And then we’ll show the world our hearts are true And nothing shall make us fear, As we blend the gold with the double blue, In the colours we hold so dear.

Cheers, Cheers, for our Camberwell! Ring out the echoes! Come on, the “Wells”! Send a mighty cheer on high! Ring down the thunder from the sky! Whether the odds be great or small Our Camberwell will win over all, While her loyal sons are marching Onwards to victory! ry! ry!

There's a fire starting in my heart, Reaching a fever pitch and it's bringing me out the dark. Finally I can see you crystal clear, Go 'head and sell me out and I'll lay your ship bare. See how I leave with every piece of you, Don't underestimate the things that I will do. There's a fire starting in my heart, Reaching a fever pitch And it's bringing me out the dark. The scars of your love remind me of us, They keep me thinking that we almost had it all. The scars of your love, they leave me breathless, I can't help feeling Chorus We could have had it all, Rolling in the deep, You had my heart inside of your hand And you played it, to the beat. Baby, I have no story to be told, But I've heard one on you And I'm gonna make your head burn. Think of me in the depths of your despair, Make a home down there As mine sure won't be shared. The scars of your love remind me of us, They keep me thinking that we almost had it all. The scars of your love, they leave me breathless, I can't help feeling Chorus Throw your soul through every open door Count your blessings to find what you look for Turn my sorrow into treasured gold You'll pay me back in kind and reap just what you've sown You're gonna wish you never had met me Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep Chorus x 2

I hear the drums echoing tonight She hears only whispers of some quiet conversation She's coming in, twelve thirty flight Moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation I stopped an old man along the way Hoping to find some long forgotten words or ancient melodies He turned to me as if to say, "Hurry boy, it's waiting there for you" It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do I bless the rains down in Africa Gonna take some time to do the things we never had The wild dogs cry out in the night As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company I know that I must do what's right As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that I've become It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do I bless the rains down in Africa Gonna take some time to do the things we never had Instrumental Hurry boy, she's waiting there for you It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do I bless the rains down in Africa, I bless the rains down in Africa I bless the rains down in Africa, I bless the rains down in Africa I bless the rains down in Africa Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

Gustav Holst Words by Sir Cecil Spring-Rice Arrangement by Stephanie Dixon
Mr Ben Bishop
And there’s another country, I’ve heard of long ago Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace.
I vow to thee, my country all earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love: The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

Words by John Farmer Verse 3 by Bertie Atkin Arrangement by John Mallinson
Mr Ben Bishop
Forty years on, when afar and asunder Parted are those who are singing today, When you look back, and forgetfully wonder What you were like in your work and your play: Then, it may be, there will often come o’er you Glimpses of notes like the catch of a song; Visions of boyhood shall float them before you, Echoes of dreamland shall bear them along. Chorus Follow up! Follow up! Follow up! Follow up! Follow up! ’Til the field rings again and again With the tramp of the thirty-six men. Follow up! Follow up! Forty years on, growing older and older, Shorter in wind, as in memory long. Feeble of foot, and rheumatic of shoulder, What will it help you that once you were strong? God give us bases to guard or beleaguer, Games to play out, whether earnest or fun; Fights for the fearless, and goals for the eager, Twenty, and thirty, and forty years on! Chorus One hundred and forty years on we still echo, Songs which were sung generations ago, Those that are leaving and those just arriving Will soon add their verse to the song we all know, So far we've come yet so far still to press on, So much to add to the words that they've sung, Now we look forward, like all those before us, Tomorrow, one hundred and forty years on. Chorus

THE SCHOOL Anthem from Chess Conductor:
Benny Anderson, Tim Rice and Bjorn Ulvaeus Arrangement by Stephanie Dixon
Mr Ben Bishop
No man, no madness, Though their sad power may prevail Can possess, conquer my country’s heart, They rise to fail. She is eternal long before nation’s lines were drawn, When no flags flew, when no armies stood, My land was born. And you ask me why I love her Through wars, death and despair. She is the constant, we who don’t care. And you wonder will I leave her – but how? I cross over borders but I’m still there now. How can I leave her? Where would I start? Let man’s petty nations tear themselves apart. My land’s only borders lie around my heart.
In 1984, 'Norge' opened in February as the new home for the Junior School. The formation of the 'Norge' singers was announced - a small group of 13 selected boys, who performed a number of two and threepart songs.
