FOURTH QUARTER 2019
A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear fellow traders and professionals, As we head into the final part of the year, it’s a good time to reflect on 2019. Retail has been challenging for many, though individual businesses have reported growth and we’ve seen businesses adapt to meet the changing needs of today’s customers. Numerous new traders have joined the Camberwell shopping precinct this year, adding variety to our product and service offering. It is great to see these new businesses choose Camberwell for their place of trade and they are welcome additions to our precinct. With Christmas fast approaching, we’re entering the busiest time of year for trade. Take the opportunity to get involved in our Christmas promotions, think about extended trading times, and let us know so we can help promote them. We have plenty of promotions coming up for the Christmas season. The digital campaign for Christmas reinforces key messages like ‘support your local shops this Christmas’ and ‘avoid the hassle of big shopping malls’ to draw customers to Camberwell. It’s a message we will also put out on radio campaigns on both 3AW and Smooth FM, as well as other media. Our street decorations make the precinct look festive, so make sure you also decorate your stores. Our popular Where’s Rudolph? competition will also encourage people to look at your window displays and explore the precinct.
Our Christmas Family Day will be held on Saturday, December 14. It’s our way of thanking customers for supporting us over the past year, so think about special offers for the day and doing something festive in your stores. Our community loves the free activities, roaming performers, fire truck rides with Santa, while the live music gives the precinct a festive and vibrant atmosphere. We can send you promotional material, so you can promote it to your customers. We need to work together to ensure we all have a great day of trade. Don’t forget to let our manager Kerry Daly know if your business is doing anything special for the Christmas and New Year period by emailing kdaly@ camberwellca.com.au. She will share your offers and in-store events with our growing audience to help reach customers who shop locally but who may not know that your business is in Camberwell. They are looking for something a bit different and want friendly local service, so think of ways to make a visit here different to the big malls and one they will want to repeat. I wish you all a happy and healthy festive season with your loved ones. Henk Kelly-Kobes President, Camberwell Centre Association
MARKETING SNAPSHOT The Camberwell shopping precinct has had a busy quarter, with many promotions running over spring. Our spring online competition gave shoppers the chance to win $1,000 in Camberwell shopping dollars to spend in any of our stores. A significant number of entries were received this year, making it one of our most popular competitions. A professionally filmed video was produced especially for the spring campaign, showcasing Camberwell’s wide range of stores and things to do in the precinct during the season. To view the video, visit: https://youtu.be/VuzaxNmtfj8 To highlight seasonal trends, we published an article on things to do in Camberwell shopping precinct during spring, a series of fashion articles and a guide to spring racing season to help promote relevant retailers in the precinct. To further bolster the marketing activities, we installed artificial flowers in the streets to decorate the precinct and mark the spring season. The street decorations received a lot of positive feedback from customers.
Our online marketing activities continue to yield great results. Here’s a snapshot of Camberwell’s digital audience numbers: • More than 7,300 email addresses in our subscriber database • More than 144,600 visits to the websites over the past year • More than 7,500 followers on social media

Camberwell's annual Christmas Family Day is on SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14 With the festive season approaching, our annual Christmas Family Day returns on Saturday, December 14 and runs from 11am – 3pm. To get into the Christmas spirit and to tap into the marketing for this event, all traders are encouraged to run special promotions on the day. The Camberwell shopping precinct will host roving entertainers and a range of activities for the family throughout the day. Back by popular demand, Santa and his antique fire truck will return with free rides around the precinct. There will also be balloon modellers, face painters, live musicians and a laneway of festive activities to keep people entertained. Families can take some festive photos with fun props at our Christmas photo wall and then share them online. Visitors will be invited to explore the precinct with our “to do list” of activities. With increased foot traffic expected, be sure to organise your own in-store promotions and events on the day. If your business is running any Christmas events, offers or in-store promotions, remember to let us know what you’ll be doing so we can help promote it via our marketing channels and get our promoters to share it on the day. Email images or details about your Christmas activities to: kdaly@camberwellca.com.au
EDITORIAL AND ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNS To help spread the word about our Christmas promotions and activities, there will be a strong editorial and advertising campaign to publicise our Christmas Family Day and keep Camberwell front of mind during the Christmas shopping season. Our advertising activities will include press advertising and a digital advertising campaign comprising AdWords, banner ads and social media advertising. To encourage consumers to shop local in Camberwell, the campaign will feature messages such as ‘avoid the hassle of the big shopping centres’ and ‘don’t risk late online orders’. We will also produce Christmas articles highlighting gift ideas and other editorial, which will be published and distributed through direct email campaigns, our website and our social media channels. There will also be radio advertisements on 3AW and Smooth FM.
CHRISTMAS TRADE Camberwell traders are already celebrating the festive season, with Christmas decorations now up across the shopping precinct. We will provide all stores with a special ‘trading days’ poster that you can complete and display to let customers know when you are open over the festive period. We will also install decorative decals on shop windows – please let us know if you do not wish to have one installed. Traders are encouraged to consider late night trading opportunities close to Christmas. Additionally, there will be no Camberwell Rotary Sunday Market on December 15 and 22, so the Market Place carpark will be available earlier on those days.
THE CAMBERWELL CITIZEN ISSUE #6 Packed with interesting local stories, the latest edition of The Camberwell Citizen will hit the streets in early December. In issue six, we speak to Melbourne author Jill Stark, meet some Camberwell Fresh Food Market traders and take a look at Camberwell’s changing alcohol laws. This premium lifestyle newspaper is widely available throughout Camberwell and surrounding areas, with more than 30,000 copies printed and distributed to local homes, stores and selected drop-off spots.
CAMBERWELL ON CANVAS Camberwell on Canvas, Camberwell’s unique community art trail, grows every year. This year’s event runs from November 8 – 30 and shows off local talents including amateur and professional artists. Artists were allocated a store and invited to submit their interpretation of the theme ‘art to match a store’, with their artworks showcased in shop windows. The Camberwell Centre Association created this event to promote the unique businesses on Burke Hill, providing canvases and allowing artists to sell their art commission free. This year we included a major prize to encourage visitors to the precinct to view the artworks. Thank you to Helloworld Camberwell and Aussie Home Loans Camberwell for contributing to the prize.
COUNCIL’S CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS COMPETITION The council is running a Christmas Decorations Competition, which is open to all traders in the City of Boroondara. We urge you to decorate your stores and enter the competition. To enter, community members must post a picture of their favourite store’s Christmas decorations on Instagram or Facebook using the hashtag #boroondarachristmas and mention the name of the store.
The winning storefront will be randomly selected from the uploaded posts. The winning business will receive $2,000 towards a social media campaign for 2020. Members of the public who upload a post will go in the draw to win one of five $200 shopping vouchers, so be sure to encourage your customers to take part. The competition runs from Friday, November 29 to Friday, December 20, with the winner announced on Monday, December 23. Terms and conditions will be uploaded to boroondara.vic.gov.au/christmas. For more information, contact Samantha Bernardo on 0409 494 001.
