A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHIEF EXECUTIVES There’s a particular thrill in a theatre when the doors open, the audience takes their seats and, the whole building comes alive. We love that feeling — and we love hearing what you think about it. Over the past year, we’ve been listening carefully to your feedback and making changes throughout The Arts to make your visit more comfortable and enjoyable. From better sightlines and seating to improved temperature control, audience flow and toilet facilities, we’re working hard to make the experience of coming to the theatre feel as effortless as possible. And we haven’t stopped there so please, keep telling us what you think. Your views genuinely help shape what we do next. There’s plenty to excite us on stage, too. This season brings some of the West End’s biggest hits to Cambridge, including Six, A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong and Heathers the Musical, alongside Felicity Kendal in Noël Coward’s deliciously mischievous Blithe Spirit. We’re also delighted to welcome James Graham’s acclaimed Punch – a powerful true story about hope, humanity and the possibility of change.

This summer, we commissioned artists Tom Piper and Chris Clark to create a completely new work for our safety curtain, inspired by our newly refurbished auditorium and, most importantly, by the people who bring it to life, you, our audience. It celebrates that extraordinary moment when a theatre fills with anticipation and possibility — and the creativity that runs through everything we do. The Arts has always been about more than what happens on stage. It’s about the artists, the audiences, the staff and the shared experience of being together in a room as a story unfolds. OUR MAN IN HAVANA Our Man in Havana, adapted by Clive Francis from Graham Greene’s novel, follows the hilarious exploits of James Wormold, a British vacuum cleaner salesman in pre-revolutionary Havana, Cuba. Struggling financially to support his spoiled daughter, Wormold is recruited by MI6 agent Hawthorne to be a spy. Lacking any actual spy skills or intentions, Wormold fabricates an entire network of fictional agents and reports, using his imagination and local bar conversations.

LONDON CITY BALLET: FIREBIRD – MIXED BILL Marking their third successful season, the award-winning London City Ballet, former resident company of Sadler’s Wells, return with a unique offering of heritage works all danced in the UK for the very first time. The triennial Cambridge Greek Play returns to The Arts Theatre Cambridge. Following the success of the Persians and Cyclops double bill in 2022, a new creative team led by director Rosalind Parker presents an exciting modern production of the classic Euripides play, Ion. We open with the backstory of mortal woman Creusa’s rape by Apollo, and her abandonment of their child. Years have passed. Ion, raised an orphan at Apollo’s Temple in Delphi, is now coming of age. Creusa and her husband have journeyed there in order to ask Apollo for assistance in conceiving a child. The tradition of performing a play in Greek every three years at Cambridge University extends back to 1882. Don’t miss a unique opportunity to see this rarely staged, timely production.

A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS Originally co-produced by Birmingham Rep, Nottingham Playhouse and Leeds Playhouse Birmingham Rep presents its powerful production of Khaled Hosseini’s bestselling novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, which has sold over 38 million copies worldwide and is Hosseini’s spiritual sequel to The Kite Runner. In 1992 in an Afghanistan ravaged by war, an orphaned Laila is left alone in an increasingly threatening world. Her older neighbour Rasheed opens his home and takes Laila as his second wife. Rasheed’s first wife Mariam has no choice but to accept her younger, and now pregnant, rival. As the Taliban take over, life becomes a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear, and the two women find themselves unlikely allies.

CAMBRIDGE FOOTLIGHTS Following a string of successful performances, Cambridge Footlights are back by popular demand with one night of hilarious comedy! Cambridge Footlights are the world-famous comedy troupe who first aired the talents of some of the foremost British comedians and actors of this century. Founded in 1880, this university drama society boasts an impressive alumni including Golden Globe and BAFTAwinning actress Olivia Coleman, Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson, Hugh Laurie, Trevor Nunn, Peter Shaffer and comedian-presenters Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc. Join Footlights as they showcase the finest sketches, songs and standup from some of the country’s finest student comedians.
THE WASTE LAND “I very much hope you like the poem, as it seems to me the best I have ever done.” The Waste Land, one of T.S. Eliot’s most famous poems, was published in 1922. Full of classical and cultural references, this poem can be viewed as a hymn to the desolation and loss in the aftermath of WWI, but it has great humour and brings a sense of promise and hope to the bleakest of images. This one-night event will include a contextual preamble to both The Waste Land and T.S. Eliot with Nathaniel Parker and Director Giles Taylor. Giles and Nathaniel have appeared together on stage in Stratford, Chichester, London and on Broadway. Giles will lead the discussion about the poem, giving audiences insight into many of the references that the poem is built around.

AN AUDIENCE WITH LORD IAN BOTHAM Lord Ian Botham, the former England captain, was one of the most impactful all-rounders of his generation with 14 centuries and 383 wickets in a career that spanned over 15 years. Through the 1980s, he was part of a golden generation of all-rounders in world cricket. The 1981 Ashes, which England won 3-1, have since come to be known as Botham’s Ashes for his starring performances with bat and ball.

Welcome to all things Creative Learning & Engagement at The Arts Theatre We’ve been busy sharing the joy of theatre with our community. For schools, we offer high-quality teacher training sessions focused on bringing performance, storytelling, and movement into the classroom. We’re also excited for another season of primary and secondary workshops, exploring everything from puppetry to fairy tales to Shakespeare! Committed to creating new opportunities for aspiring and emerging creatives, we enter our second year of the Creative Careers Youth Forum, a youth-led initiative (18–25 years) and are pleased to be hosting a series of artist development workshops and creative careers events, breaking barriers of arts participation. We believe theatre is for everyone – and are proud to be making progress on our journey towards becoming a Theatre of Sanctuary, fostering a culture of welcome and sand support for refugees and sanctuary seeking members of our community. Whether you’re a young person finding your voice, a teacher looking to bring creativity into the classroom, or simply curious about the many paths into theatre – we hope you’ll join us and take part!

A New Studio Theatre Plans are well underway for a new 200-seat studio theatre on the building’s rooftop. The Studio is designed for fresh voices, bold new work and deeper community reach. It will be a home for emerging artists and a space for bold ideas which will open-up more cultural opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds. Every donation, every named seat, and every message of encouragement brings us closer to completing the Studio in 2028.
